Consumer Electronics (CE)

Sony

Cloud TV services

• Sony's coming cloud-based TV service will carry 22 Viacom networks at launch, the companies said in a release.

• The deal is a milestone in the technology and entertainment industry's ambitions for a fully online pay-TV service, one that gives you the most popular networks of your cable provider but delivers them over the Internet. It has been a goal for a plethora of companies but has largely remained out of reach. Apple and Google have been said to be in pursuit, and for nearly a year, Intel was the only company to outright broadcast its plans to launch one. Sony went public with its goal at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, saying it plans to pilot a cloud-based TV service this year that combines live television content with on-demand and DVR.

GE

Selling its appliances to Electrolux

• GE announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its appliances business to Sweden-based appliance maker Electrolux AB for $3.3 billion. As part of the transaction, GE

has entered into a long-term agreement with Electrolux to continue use of the GE Appliances brand. The transaction has been approved by the boards of directors of GE and Electrolux and remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, and it targeted to close in 2015.

Arçelik

Eurobond

• Arcelik, Europe's third-biggest white-goods makers, said it borrowed 350 million euro ($450 million) via a seven-year eurobond at a rate of 4 percent.

Vestel

Joining Frog by Wyplay initivative for TV Software Solution

• Vestel, a leading Turkish consumer electronics and home appliances manufacturer, unveiled it is joining the Frog by Wyplay initiative and intends to collaborate within the ecosystem for creating next generation TV software solutions based on Wyplay’s middleware.

• Launched early 2014, Frog by Wyplay - a shared-source initiative built around Wyplay’s software solutions – has already been chosen by Canal+ and new operators to be announced soon. Frog by Wyplay counts, now, more than 60 partners and is becoming a worldwide digital TV standard.

• Frog by Wyplay is bringing together a growing ecosystem of companies across the entire digital TV technology value chain: chipset vendors, device manufacturers, independent software vendors, software services providers and operators.

Smartphone

• Vestel Group (VESTL), a Turkish maker of televisions and household appliances, plans to turn smartphones into its biggest source of revenue after introducing its first handsets last week.

• Phones will probably account for more sales than TVs, its current largest sales driver at about $2 billion annually, within five to six years, Chief Executive Officer Turan Erdogan said at the IFA consumer electronics fair in Berlin.

• “The smartphone industry is the fastest-growing sector for consumer electronics,” Erdogan said. “We cannot afford not to be there. There is a trend that people are willing to try out new brands, and that’s an opportunity for us.”

• At the IFA fair, which continues until Sept. 10, Vestel is showing the Venus X and Venus V smartphones, which resemble Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone on the outside and run on Google Inc.’s Android operating system. Vestel said it plans to manufacture 3 million smartphones by the end of 2017, with a third of those to be exported to markets including Germany, France and the U.K.

• The company is in talks with operators who would sell the phones in their stores, Erdogan said, adding that retail partners are easy to find because many of its products are already widely sold. InTurkey, the 5.5-inch Venus phones will retail for $410, while the 5-inch versions will cost $295.

ICT Industry

Apple

iPhone 6 and Apple Watch

• Apple just wrapped up one of its biggest events ever.

• It announced two new models of the iPhone — the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. It announced a new payment system for the iPhone called Apple Pay. It also announced a smart watch called the Apple Watch.

• The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen, and the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen. The current iPhone 5S is a 4-inch model. Android phones for years have had larger screens, so Apple is catching up here. However, the phone looks great and is certain to be a blockbuster.

• Apple's payment system, Apple Pay looks pretty slick, too. If you have an iPhone 6, you will be able to simple tap your phone at a register, use your fingerprint and pay for things.

• The Apple Watch is less certain. It looks a lot like an iPod slapped on your wrist. It can track your motion. It can do apps, and send messages.

Apple’s stock performance

Apple Pay

• Apple announced Apple Pay, a digital payment system that lets people pay for retail store purchases using their phones rather than cash or credit cards. The service, which will work both with iPhones and Apple's new

Watch, is backed by a host of big retailers, along with most major banks and credit card issuers, including Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

• Citi Investment Research analyst Mark May believes the sum total of mobile payments could grow from $1 billion in 2013 to $58.4 billion by 2017.

iPhone 6 Shipments

• Makers in the iPhone supply chain are preparing parts and components for production of up to 80 million units of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus before year-end 2014, according to sources at Taiwan-based iPhone supply chain.

• Apple aims to ship 80 million units of the iPhone 6-series products before the end of 2014, higher than the 60 million units of the iPhone 5 shipped in 2013, the sources indicated.

• Barring the occurrence of component shortages and low yield rates, shipments of the iPhone 6s should be able to reach 10 million units by the end of September and total 60-70 million in the fourth quarter, the sources estimated.

• Taiwan's makers in the iPhone supply chain include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (A8 processors); Catcher Technology and Foxconn Technology (cases); Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (camera modules); Foxconn Electronics and Pegatron (assembly); Simplo Technology (battery); and Delta Electronics (power supply).

• Meanwhile, PCB makers Compeq manufacturing, Unimicron Technology, Zhen Ding Technology Holdings, and Flexium Interconnect, as well as IC packaging/testing companies Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE), King Yuan Electronics (KYEC) and Ardentec are also in the supply chain.
