În Maramureş se află mai mult de o sută de biserici din lemn din care opt au fost cuprinse pe listele patrimoniului mondial UNESCO. Una dintre cele opt este biserica de lemn din Şurdeşti

Udătoriu’ – Şurdeşti: Old agrarian ritual, celebrating the most hardworking man of the village (udătoriu’), whose selection is strict: he, together with other hardworking people, is observed for a long time by a jury of old men before being elected.

Sărbătoarea Populară Udătoriul de la Şurdeşti are loc în fiecare an în a doua zi de Paşti. Este o sărbătoare străveche, poate chiar din vremea dacilor liberi, închinată muncii şi redă simbolistica fertilităţii, a belşugului şi rodului bogat. Este sărbătorit cel mai harnic gospodar al satului. Îmbrăcaţi în frumoasele costume tradiţionale de pe Fisculaş,sătenii participă la alaiul care începe de la Biserica de Lemn (monument UNESCO), străbate satul şi ajunge la casa gospodarului unde are loc un moment vesel şi dansuri populare şi se încheie la un pârâu unde gospodarul este udat de săteni. Urmează apoi o serbare câmpenească.

The ancient fertility tradition of Udatoriu from the village of Surdesti is one of the most original labour traditions all over the world. It is happened here in the second day of Easter every year.

Maramureş is considered one of Europe best preserved zones from the perspective of cultural anthropology and ethnography. Old traditions have remained alive due to the high mountains sheltering the long depression from all sides.

On the occasion of religious feasts and great fairs, each Moroşan, without exception, owns a traditional costume. Not only old people dress in traditional clothes but also “coconii” (preschool children), which explains the continued use of the costume.
