Tips For Motorcycle BeginnersMen and women who ride motorcycles often insist there's nothing quite like riding. Riding a mo-torcycle not only can be exhilarating and provide a feeling unlike any other, but it also requires patience and discipline for beginners and veteran riders alike.
Riding a motorcycle carries a certain stigma of being dangerous, but that's only the case for inat-tentive riders who forget their responsibilities while on the road. The following are some tips that beginners can put to use when hitting the open road.
* Gear up and stay geared up. Beginners often don't have a problem gearing up, as many are understandably nervous and therefore less likely to leave necessary equipment in the garage. Always wear a helmet, motorcycle jacket, riding gloves, riding boots and motorcycle pants when riding. Many riders fall into the trap of wearing less gear once they become more acclimated to their bike. But gear should be worn whether you have been riding for 50 days or 50 years.
* Prepare, prepare, prepare. There's no such thing as too much preparation when riding a mo-torcycle. Motorcycle training guides are valuable tools of information for beginners. These in-structional videos or reading materials provide insight into all aspects of riding a motorcycle,
and no beginner should get on a motorcycle without fi rst watching or reading a motorcycle training guide.
* Practice away from other mo-torists. Don't start riding on a freeway until you have grown accustomed to riding the bike at slow practice speeds you've honed away from other motorists. Empty parking lots make ideal training grounds. Once you feel comfortable in the parking lot, gradually move to roads without heavy traffi c, such as residential
neighborhoods. Once you're truly comfortable on the bike, then you can hit the highway.
* Go to class. A motorcycle safety course might be a requirement in some areas but not required in others. Regardless of whether or not it's required, take the class anyway. Such classes might cost a few hundred dollars, but their value far exceeds that cost. A safety course prepares riders for anything they might encounter on the road. Just be sure to enroll in a class that teaches ac-cident evasion.
* Get the right size. Some riders envision themselves at the helm of a big hog, while others see themselves tooling down the highway on an ultra-light bike. But don't go to extremes in either direction, at least not with your fi rst motorcycle. A heavy bike might be more stable, but it's also harder to control. A lighter bike might feel easier to control, but it's best to wait until you have had a year or two of experience before buying bikes often referred to as "crotch rockets," which are sporty and fast.
What To Do If A Tire Blows OutAccidents that occur on the roadways are unpredictable and can be caused by just about any-thing. Impaired or distracted motorists might heighten the risk of an accident, but even things like a squirrel running across the street and scaring a driver can lead to an accident.
Tire blowout is another potential cause of accident, and such blowouts might be more common than motorists expect. For instance, a 2005 study from the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research found that, between 1996 and 2002, nearly 61,000 vehicles were involved in crashes with property damage and/or injury on a particular stretch of highway. More than six percent of those accidents involved tire blowout, a problem many motorists might mistake as something that only happens in movies.
But tire blowout can put motorists in a precarious position, especially if they don't know what to do should one of their tires blow out. Surviving tire blowout can be done by adhering to the following tips.
* Don't respond by hitting the brakes. It might be counterintuitive to squeeze the gas pedal when a tire blows out, but doing so puts drivers in control of the vehicle and keeps it going in the intended direction. Immediately slamming on the brakes will cause the vehicle to turn, possibly turning the vehicle into oncoming traffi c, a guardrail or other cars traveling in the same direction. When squeezing the gas pedal, drive straight down the lane. Within seconds of pressing the gas pedal, slowly begin to release it.
* Coast to a slower speed. As the accelerator is released, allow the vehicle to coast to a slow speed, but not a speed so slow as to put driver and passengers at risk. Once the car is coasting between 25 to 30 miles per hour, use the turn signal and slowly turn toward the side of the road where the tire is blown. For example, if the front right tire is blown, turn toward the right shoul-der. You want to turn toward this side because it's always safest to limit your own exposure to oncoming motorists when changing the tire.
* Check tire pressure when you can pull into a parking lot. When you have safely made it to the shoulder and the tire has been changed successfully, fi nd a fi lling station or other parking lot and check the tire pressure on the tires that did not blowout. A blowout is often the result of an underinfl ated tire, so if one tire blows out due to underinfl ation it's quite possible the others might as well.

GPS Usage Tips Today’s drivers rely heavily on GPS technology, or global positioning system devices. GPS has revolutionized the way people drive and use maps and directions.
While there are no hard statistics on the number of people who own GPS devices, thousands of people have either a GPS device that comes pre-equipped in a car that they purchased or a stand-alone device that was bought after the fact. These devices come pre-loaded with maps that work with satellites in space. The GPS receiver fi gures out the distance to each and uses this informa-tion to deduce the location of the device in a process called trilateration.
GPS devices have made paper maps obsolete for many people. While GPS devices can be very convenient, especially on road trips, there are some tips to keep in mind.
* Place the GPS device where it won’t obstruct your vision or take your eyes off of the road for a good deal of time.
* Don’t treat the GPS as if it is infallible. Even with map updates and other accessories, a GPS can still make mistakes. Use common sense, especially where it would seem the GPS is guiding you in the wrong way.
* Do not play with the controls while operating the car. If you need to adjust something on the GPS, do so only after pulling over to a safe area.
* Have a general idea where you are going so you’ll know if the GPS is potentially guiding you in the wrong direction and can maneuver in advance.
What To Do With A Cracked WindshieldThe scenario is all too common. Drivers are traveling down the road, and a pebble gets kicked up and hits into their windshield, caus-ing a small chip to appear. Slowly but surely that chip turns into a spreading, snaking crack that only gets worse with each bump and pot-hole.
Having a broken windshield is not only un-sightly and a big inconvenience, it can also be illegal. That's because the crack reduces the effi cacy of the window safety composi-tion, meaning it may shatter in the event of an impact accident and cause extensive injuries. The crack also may impede a driver's ability to see the road clearly.
It's important to note that liability car insurance typically doesn't cover a cracked windshield that
occurs in a collision. Instead, drivers hoping to be covered need to have collision insur-ance on their vehicle. Howev-er, not all windshields crack in a car accident. Many are damaged in nonaccident re-lated circumstances, whether this be a tree branch that falls on the car or a rock kicked up from the roadway. It's important to read an insur-ance policy thoroughly to be sure that nonaccident related cracks to the windshield will be covered.
Even if the damage is cov-ered, it may not be worth the expense of paying the insur-ance deductible and fi ling a claim, which may end up rais-ing your rate in the long run.
Many small nicks can be re-paired easily with a kit pur-chased from an automotive supply store. Inexpensive and user-friendly, the instructions guide users through the process of sealing the crack and preventing it from spreading.
If the crack is beyond the scope of a do-it-yourself fi x, a windshield repair service that specializes in this type of work might be necessary. These companies use products that harden quickly and reglaze the windshield so that the crack may not even be noticeable afterward.
Upon inspection, a mechanic or a windshield replacement company may determine that the crack is not something that can be mended. The entire windshield will have to be replaced at this point. In some cases the windshield can be removed and replaced in the same day.
While there is no way to prevent a cracked windshield entirely, there are certain ways to reduce the risk. This includes avoiding running over any debris on the road that can be kicked back at the windshield.
A windshield crack is something that should be rem-edied soon.

Let These Films Satisfy Your Need For SpeedCar guys and gals love their vehicles, but they also love their movies about cars. When not tooling around in your ride this spring and summer, the following car movies should satisfy your need for speed.
Bullitt (1968): Steve McQueen stars as the San Francisco cop looking to fi nd the kingpin who killed the witness under his protection. The actor did much of the driving of the '68 Mus-tang in this movie, leaving only the riskiest maneuvers to his stunt double.
American Graffi ti (1973): A coming of age movie set in the 1960s about four teenagers going off to college. They spend one last summer cruising the Sunset Strip and getting into trou-ble. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford and Ron How-ard, this classic was directed by George Lucas of "Star Wars" fame.
The Cannonball Run (1983): Eccentric competitors engage in an illegal cross-country car race. A who's who of stars, includ-ing Burt Reynolds, Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLu-
ise, and Dean Martin star in this action-packed fl ick.
Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000): A retired car thief must get back into the business, stealing 50 cars in one night to save the life of his brother. Stars Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie.
The Fast and the Furious (2001): An undercover cop infi l-trates the underbelly of Los Angeles street racers. This movie spawned a series of sequels with more automotive special ef-fects than substance.

“Empties for Animals" Campaign To Run All Year!Goldstein Auto Group
Helping Mohawk Hudson Humane Society ALBANY, NY (02/29/2012)- What started out to be a Super bowl campaign to benefi t The Mohawk Hud-son Humane Society has snowballed into a year round program for The Goldstein Family Auto Group, Thanks to the hundreds of donations of cans and bottles The Goldstein Family Auto Group has received from the community, coupled with the MHHS 125th Anniversary, Goldstein Auto is committed to continuing their part of the campaign year round. Since coming on board, The Goldstein Fam-ily Auto Group has set up depositories in each of their four dealerships to help collect cans and bottles from patrons, staff , and families, wanting to help the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in Menands, New York. The cans and bottles turn into dollars for the organization to help care for and place the animals they have at the shelter. "Our Goal for the 125 Anniversary is to encourage the
community to help collect 1,562,500 which would translate into $125,000 to MHHS. " said Stefanie Goldstein, a principal in the Goldstein Family Auto Group and daughter of President Alan Goldstein. "This is only 637,500 more bottles and cans than last year. If everyone continues the momentum we have had already, we can do it!" Last year the Society's "Empties for Animals" program generated over $74,000 in revenue. Individual members of the community, school groups and other organizations dropped off more than 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans based upon the originating distributor, which in turn generated 8 cents per can/bottle instead of the regular 5-cent redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the programs were used to benefi t the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Soci-ety in 2011. "As an added incentive The Goldstein Family has commissioned our trucks and driv-ers to make pick ups from around their area neighborhoods, restaurants, schools, event destinations, anywhere they need us to" added Stefanie. "If everyone who does not save their recyclables currently starts saving them, we can make a huge diff er-ence." With Earth Day just a few months away, weekly totals received at all Goldstein Auto locations will increase as the group does plan to participate in "A Billion Acts of Green" one of the Earth Day organizations April programs. They are using the power of their advertising, website, facebook page and show rooms to spread the word to recycle and help save abandon, elderly and abused animals rescued and cared for by The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.People can drop off their cans and bottles to any of the four Goldstein locations:

Did you fi nd one at an antique shop that you couldn’t resist, but wonder about when it was made? Participants are welcome to bring a quilt to learn more about or are welcome to attend and observe what others have brought with them. This program will be held on Sunday, April 29, 1-3pm at Brookside Museum and will be in a round-table discussion format, as many members will have insights to share. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about appropriate options for storing and cleaning quilts. While monetary appraisals will not be available during this program, information will be offered about how to fi nd an experienced textile appraiser. This program is free to the public, but dona-tions are gratefully accepted. Brookside is located at 6 Charlton Street in Ballston Spa. (A)

PRAYER TO THEBLESSED VIRGIN
(Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. (favor granted) E.V P.

Small Business Is Making A Big Difference In Our Towns
The recent surge in membership at the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County has been due to a strong emphasis on placing small, family owned business-es squarely at the center of all our major initiatives. No, that doesn’t mean we’re abandoning large com-panies – rather we believe that our approach has brought even greater enthusiasm from the big fi rms too. Under this approach, small and large busi-nesses have actually begun fi nding ways to partner in unprecedented ways to bring about some really exciting happenings, which will be for the benefi t of everyone.
Last Wednesday night in Halfmoon, small business owners rose in support of the proposed Halfmoon Village and Yacht Club, lend-ing their voice to that of landowner Gail Krause and spokesmen for the Chazen Companies in asserting that this multimillion dollar development will help in-vigorate the economy of the Exit 8 corridor as well as benefi t the Mohawk River waterfront and canal businesses. The town board showed great leadership in voting to proceed with the project.
Similarly, in Clifton Park a consortium of large and small businesses led by gi-ants Turner Construction, GE and Momentive are working with Shenendehowa High School students to restore Historic Lock 19 which dates back to 1842.
Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County
This new model of collaboration will create opportunities for historic, ecological and scientifi c study, as well as help attract visitors to the site who will also stop and shop in our nearby stores. You can volunteer for the Canal Clean Sweep on April 21 – call 518-371-7748 for details.
Exciting opportunities also exist in Ballston and Charl-ton, where farms and agriculture related businesses can benefi t from stronger ties to “Main Street” entrepreneurs. Similar possibilities can be found in Waterford, Malta, Mechanicville and Stillwater. The fun part is working to orchestrate all these great partnerships. Get involved in the action and make a diff erence in our communities!
