As its 6th anniversary approaches, Daegu Gyeongbuk

Free Economic Zone Authority (DGFEZ Authority) is

running at full speed to take its second leap forward.

With specific business types assigned to each of its

districts, the DGFEZ's aggressive strategy to win

investment is producing tangible progress. At the

center of it all is Commissioner Byung-rok Choi who not

only has Napoleonic passion and vigor but also displays

wisdom that reminds us of Liu Bang, the founder and

Emperor of the Han Dynasty in China. Let's meet the

man who is writing the success story of DGFEZ.

Please tell us about your journey as the DGFeZ Commissioner.

he past two years and six months have been so busy that the time has practically flown by. After taking office in August

2011, I faced the urgent task of devising a blueprint for Daegu and Gyeongbuk; namely, how to create new growth engines

for the region. I met so many people; from CEOs of foreign-invested companies such as TaeguTec Ltd. and Valeo Pyeong Hwa

Co. to POSTECH, SL, robust Korean corporations and prospective joint venture businesses, I went to them in person.

I met with experts from various fields, industry-academia-research personnel and central government officials and shared

many views with them. I also asked ambassadors to Korea and foreign chambers of commerce to share their suggestions on

how to improve the business environment in Daegu and Gyeongbuk.

Please briefly tell us about the DGFeZ's success strategies and goals.

The DGFEZ is different from other FEZs centered on ports and

logistics. Located inland, DGFEZ must utilize the steel, IT, and

automobile clusters in Pohang, Gumi, and Ulsan, respectively -

cities that are located about 30~40Km outside Daegu - in order

to successfully attract foreign investment. At the same time, we

must build on well-rounded infrastructure in the knowledge-based

industry and a top-notch R&D foundation. We must ensure that the

following four corridors are organically linked to maximize synergies:

IT convergence, cutting-edge transport parts & materials, green

energy, and knowledge-based services that encompass education,

medicine and culture

In line with the Korean government's First Basic Plan for FEZs

(July 2013), we finalized the "Mid-term and Long-term Momentum

Strategy for the Success of DGFEZ." By accumulating the knowledge

industries, such as culture and medicine, etc,. and giving each

business district its own distinctiveness, we will grow the DGFEZ into

a hub for the new growth engine based on global knowledge.

To be specific, we will create specialized clusters for medicine

and software convergence in Suseong Medical District in Daegu. In

Gyeongbuk's Gyeongsan R&BD District, we will foster a specialized

complex for next-generation construction machinery parts. Also, the

establishment of Boeing's MRO Center (Oct. 2013) in Yeongcheon

High-Tech Park will be an opportunity to specialize that business

district as an advance base for avionics.

As we mark our sixth anniversary next year, we are working

with new resolve and determination. In terms of foreign investment

attraction, we are aiming to see an annual increase of $100 million

USD, reaching $1 billion USD by 2020. With regards to domestic

investment, we have set a goal of 2.3 trillion KRW. We will focus

our energies on winning investments through aggressive, proactive

and tailored activities. In addition to inviting businesses to invest

in the DGFEZ, we will also work to improve the living environment

for foreigners including international schools, hospitals and rental

housing. We will focus all our capacities to position the DGFEZ at the

center of the future's creative economy.

DGFEZ Authority encountered many difficulties when

it first opened due to the recession of the world economy

and the construction business in Korea. Through

persistence and hard work, however, we formulated

mid- and long-term strategies to develop the DGFEZ

districts and attract investment. Our efforts began to

bear fruit in 2011.

In 2012, foreign investment in the DGFEZ exceeded

US$100 million for the first time. Today, it amounts to

nearly $340 million USD (by MOU standards). When

I set the goal of raising foreign investment by more

than $100 million USD each year, no one was certain it

was possible. However, we succeeded and now we are

confident.

what can you say were the main factors to your

success in winning investment thus far? The most

important factor seems to be all the staff's sweat,

doesn't it?

The DGFEZ was behind the other FEZs when

it started out in 2008. Its conditions were far from

favorable when compared to the other front-running

FEZs. Despite the fact, the Ministry of Trade, Industry

and Energy ranked the DGFEZ third overall out of the six

FEZs in its 2013 FEZ Performance Evaluation, and first

in the organizational and business operations category.

The tangible progress we made in winning

investments can be attributed to several main factors.

The development projects for the DGFEZ's disricts

including Suseong Medical District and Gyeongsan

R&BD District have made good progress. We

implemented a JV strategy to attract foreign-invested

companies, diversified our foreign business contact

channels, built investor relations overseas, introduced

Korea's first integrated business management system

named the Investment Attraction Management (IAM)

System, and enhanced promotion through SNS.

The most important factor to our success, without a

doubt, has been the unity of the DGFEZ staff. Together,

we shared the heavy sense of duty that we would take

responsibility for the Daegu and Gyeongbuk economy. In

my opinion, the success of foreign investment attraction

is determined by the proactive and creative thinking

of the entire staff and their attitude that does not let

the development of DGFEZ's districts and stimulate the attraction of high

local economies of Daegu and Gyeongbuk. Like two wheels on a cart, the

Association works with the DGFEZ to seek out win-win growth and solve

problems through dialogue and consultation for a better future. We met

with the Association Chairman Don Kyu Park.

Descendant of Paengneon Park, one of the “six Martyred Ministers” becoming Head of the DGFeZ association

orn in Daegu, I belong to the 18th generation of descendants of Paengnyeon Park, one of the "Six Martyred Ministers." (Note: The

six martyred ministers or Sayuksin were six ministers of the Joseon Dynasty who were executed by King Sejo in 1456 for plotting to assassinate him and restore the former King Danjong to the throne.) My father took prime responsibility for looking after our ancestors and his last words before passing away were, "Return to the countryside and look after our ancestors." After 25 years in Seoul, I moved back to my hometown with my family and we have been here since. My working career began in Seoul. Because my family was not well-off, I delivered newspapers in high-school to pay for school. I started out at small and medium-sized businesses and then worked at Hyosung Group for 22 years.

After returning to Daegu, I was involved in various business related activities including consulting and asset management. Then, as an answer to the call to serve the local community, I became a councilor, much to the opposition of the family. I worked as an aide for National Assembly representatives, served as the chairman of the Welfare Environment Committee for the 4th Daegu Dalseo-gu Council, served on the Education & Society and Economy & Transportation Committee for the 5th Daegu Metropolitan City Council, and served as the chairman of the Economy & Transportation Committee for the 6th Daegu Metropolitan City Council. Currently, I am a member of the Committee and an adjunct professor at Yeungjin College. In addition, I was named “Best Councilor” in the three-year assessment of all the metropolitan city councils nationwide (5th councilor), received the “Manifesto Pledge Grand Prize” for regional councilors (6th councilor), and awarded the “Korea Parliamentary Politics for the People Award,” a three-year assessment. In August 2012, I was elected as the third chairman of the DGFEZ Association and am striving to develop the regional industries of Daegu and Gyeongbuk and boost the local economy.

DGFeZ and the association headed towards the same objectiveA future-oriented organization moves towards one objective

(goal) with its past, present and future in mind. The Association and the DGFEZ ought to meet their common goals by making policy proposals, conducting policy analyses, making effective use of the budget, and establishing an impartial business operations system. To this end, the Association is comprised of 17 members from various sectors: eight from Daegu Metropolitican City, eight from Gyeongbuk and one from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. As the members range from economy experts, deputy heads of local governments and councilors of Gyeongbuk Province and Daegu Metropolitan City, they carry out similar functions and roles as a city council would for the city. It deliberates and votes on major

issues concerning the operation of DGFEZ Authority, enacts/amends/abolishes the Association's rules and regulations, deliberates and sets the budget, authorizes and evaluates account settlements, and conducts administrative auditing. "It is very important for us to achieve the overall objective by our respective strengths when things are going well and talk to each other to find best ways when we face problems."

Daegu and Gyeongbuk must go together for economic growth

The economy grows when the surrounding environment and circumstances align with it. Everything including circumstances, law and reality must be factored in when pursuing goals. More than 30 years of my experiences in real economy and my position in the Economy and Transportation Committee has given me the insight to see Daegu's present, past and future with a macroscopic perspective. Only when Daegu and Gyeongbuk are incorporated fundamentally can its economy be revived. The local economy of Daegu and Gyeongbuk can help the national economy determine which direction to take in the world economy. Cities compete with one another in today's world economy. With the integration of the Daegu and Gyeongbuk economy, the combined population is now five million. I will help lead the revival of the urban economy to suit this growth by prioritizing the early construction of a private international airport for southern Korea and the relocation of intake water sources.

To all the young people! Start from the bottom up.Life is learned through hardship. Don't always look

higher. When life is hard, you’d better look back those in worse situations. Then, you will have a heart of gratitude and consideration. Before anything is done or said, remember to think it through three times beforehand. I hope you grow through perseverance. Don't forget that perseverance means "enduring until you can't endure any longer, and then enduring some more."

ith its 5th anniversary in 2013, Daegu Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone Authority (DGFEZ Authority) raised its anchor of hope and set sail towards new leaps and bounds. Since Commissioner Byung-Rok Choi took the helm

At 10 a.m. on March 20, 2013 (Wed.), the twenty-member "The DGFEZ Hope Volunteer Team" was launched in the presence of the entire DGFEZ family at the DGFEZ Authority's Office building. The team was created to lead efforts in spreading "a culture of sharing, consideration and giving" by organizing volunteer programs that benefit local residents in its ten FEZ business districts located in the Daegu & Gyeongbuk Region. Volunteers would offer their time and talents in various ways including farming help, visiting welfare facilities, disaster relief, interpretation at international events, and musical performances.

Around 130 people including city and provincial officials and DGFEZ staff gathered to celebrate DGFEZ Authority's 5th anniversary on August 13, 2013 in the Assembly Room on the 4th floor of the Daegu Trade Center. While attendees reflected on the significance of the past five years, public officials who made notable contributions were recognized. A special performance by the DGFEZ's own music club made the event feel like a family affair.

An investment information session was held at 11 a.m. on 28 August 2013 (Wed.) in which 26 dignitaries and businessmen attended including Michel Probst, the Ministry of Economy of the Jura in Switzerland, representatives from the luxury brand Bulgari and other top world-class companies, as well ad officials from the Swiss Embassy in Seoul. Their visit came at a time when the DGFEZ had been devoting its energies in inviting leading business from Japan, China and Europe to share with them the merits and advantages of investing in the DGFEZ.

5th anniversary - Let's move toward a bright future for Daegu and Gyeongbuk by combining the DGFEZ's capacities

With a 285% increase in investment attraction year-on-year, DGFEZ topped the rankings among the Koreas's six free economic zones in the "2013 Ministry of Trade, Industry & Economy's Nationwide Free Economic Zone Authority Performance Evaluation."Armed with the vision of becoming a "knowledge creation based global FEZ", the DGFEZ is charging forward. It was designated as a free economic zone (FEZ) in 2008 and 8.124 trillion KRW (USD 7.6 billion)was invested to create ten districts in the Daegu, Gyeongbuk area by 2020. The DGFEZ, by pursuing various projects and actively attracting investments, will continue to develop as a global platform for the Daegu and Gyeongbuk Economy that will help upgrade the region's industrial powers. To ensure the success of a DGFEZ that will drive the bright future and limitless growth of Daegu and Gyeongbuk, it is essential that the DGFEZ and the residents of the province join hands together.

I have been working here for less than 6

months, so I am still getting used to the

DGFEZ, It's been a great first workplace for

me to begin my career as a new graduate.

I enjoy telling friends about the free economic

zone and our famous districts such as the

Daegu Technopolis, the Sinseo Meditech

District, and the Esiapolis. Sometimes, when I

travel to Seoul or other areas for work, people

compliment us about the DGFEZ's work

ethic which is rewarding and makes me feel

proud. Some have told me they hear about the

DGFEZ through our promotional booklets and

advertising. I am passionate about my job and

will make sure to deliver interesting DGFEZ

news to our followers.

Small but strong businesses, R&D hub,

qualified labor force, good living conditions and

advanced knowledge-based service industry

all make the DGFEZ attractive for foreign

investors. Also, Daegu and Gyeongbuk have

the most UNESCO World Cultural Heritages in

Korea including Bulguksa, Seokguram Grotto,

Gyeongju Historic Areas, Andong Hahoe

Village and Gyeongju Yangdong Village. And

as the cradle of Korea's three major ancient

cultures of Buddhism, Confucianism and

Gaya, the region is great for tourism. Five of

the nine seowon (Confucian memorial halls)

included on UNESCO's Tentative List can be

found here. Daegu and Gyeongbuk is, without

a doubt, the best place for domestic and

international tourists to see authentic Korea.

This is the first time that public officials from

Daegu City and Gyeongbuk Province have

worked together on such a large scale since

Daegu was placed under direct administration

by the central government in the early 1980s.

Generally, about 120 Daegu and Gyeongbuk

officials come and go in two-year cycles, so

the DGFEZ is becoming a mixing ground for

the two local governments. At the DGFEZ, we

address regional issues together.

We march together to attract foreign

investment, improve the living environment

for foreigners, and instill global minds in the

community. This will be a key in realizing the

vision of Daegu and Gyeongbuk.

I believe the DGFEZ is doing the most to create jobs and

boost the local economy in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. I think

that the current development of Gyeongsan R&BD District

create jobs but also an influx of foreign

I took a trip to the sea in Guryongpo, Pohang. I could experience traditional Korea as I

walked along the old roads. I cannot forget the beauty there and I would definitely visit

again. After studying digital design at Catholic University of Daegu, I want to live in the

pretty city of Hayang, Gyeongbuk.

About Gyeongbuk Province

yeongsangbuk-do lies on the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula,

bounded by the East Sea to the east. The extensive transportation networks

by air, rapid transit railways and expressways enable people to reach most parts

of Gyeongsangbuk-do from Seoul in 50 minutes to 3 hours. Gyeongsangbuk-do

is located between 35° 34E and 37° 33E north latitude, which is approximately the

same latitude as Washington D.C. (U.S.), Tokyo (Japan), Lanzhou (China), Teheran

(Iran) and Lisbon (Portugal). The residents of Gyeongsanbuk-do have inherited the

wo districts are blowing favorable winds in the sails of the DGFEZ, recently winning

sizeable foreign investments; The Daegu Technopolis is a specialized economic

zone (SEZ) that is leading the creative economy with its harmonious provision of housing,

education, culture and leisure, while the Yeongcheon Industry District is on its way to become

a central production mecca for cutting-edge transportation parts and materials. The Daegu

Technopolis proved its worth as an investment district on September 30, 2013 (Mon.), when

it succeeded in attracting a joint investment worth $50 million USD with UGint Co., Ltd., a

Daegu Technopolis, hitting a large investment home run

he foundation construction of Daegu Technopolis was completed in late 2013, and the

infrastructure construction is 95% complete (as of October 2013). The R&D database of the

district is being built solidly as DGIST, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute,

and Korea Institute of Industrial Technology have already moved in, with the Korea Institute of

Machinery & Materials soon to follow. Three firms including Hyundai IHL and Nakamura-Tome

Precision Industry are already in operation as well. And with twenty businesses constructing their

factories, The Daegu Technopolis is steadily shaping its stature as a high-tech comprehensive

new city for IT convergence. On September 30, 2013 (Mon) The Daegu Technopolis won a joint

investment totalling $50 million USD with Daegu ‘Star Company’ and World Class 300 business

UGint Co., Ltd., Cayman Island's EastBridge Asian Mid-Market Opportunity Fund L.P., and Saudia

Arabia's Dallah Albaraka Group. As such, The Daegu Technopolis is solidifying its status as a Free

Economic Zone. As long as the small but strong businesses in Daegu find ways to connect with the

Site of the “sea change”From the entrance of Daegu Technopolis, the newly paved Techno Daero Road stretches to Mt. Biseulsan in the distance, a residential complex is seen to the left, the industrial complex is to the right, and a tall aerial ladder marks the development site. Considering the district was all but a wide stretch of fields under Mt. Biseulsan when construction began five years ago in December 2008, The Daegu Technopolis has experienced a major sea change, transforming itself into a completely new world.

The large-scale investment of approximately 75 billion KRW (of which foreign investment is 54.2 billion KRW or $50 million USD) will be highly beneficial. As a result of the joint investment, UGint will increase its production rate t0 600 tools per month. As it aims for the world's top three in tapping center production, it is expected to create jobs and lead technological development in the mechatronics sector. The period of the investment project is expected to last from 2013 to 2018, and construction is planned to begin in March 2014.

Top firms quick to move inExcluding the area reserved for foreign investment (398,640㎡), 95% of the industrial land in the Daegu Technopolis has already been sold. Eighty-four companies and research institutes have signed sale contracts for plots of land, while eleven companies have begun construction. Factory operations are already underway for Hyundai IHL and Nakamura-Tome Precision Industry. When upwards of 100 companies will be operating in full swing by 2015, the Daegu Technopolis will be able to boast of its stature as a cutting-edge comprehensive city of 50,000 residents in which housing, industry and research are well-incorporated. It is expected to drive the stimulation of the local economy by creating an estimated 84,000 jobs, a local economic ripple effect of 3.5 trillion KRW, and 6.4 trillion KRW in added value.

Foundation building goes smoothlyThe foundation construction of Daegu Technopolis including roads, water and sewage, and wastewater treatment plant has been going smoothly. It is currently 95% complete and will be wrapped up by the end of 2013. Construction on some blocks including the Yonghwasa site, delayed because of land compensation procedures for religious site and civil complaints. In addition, construction of electricity work carried out by the KEPCO was also delayed. However both constructions will be finished in 2014. After the basic infrastructure is all set up in December 2013, the area will gradually take on the appearance of a new city. New apartment buildings will be ready for residents and access roads will be open by late 2014, at which point commercial facilities, financial institutions, medical facilities and other convenience facilities will begin to open their doors.

“Divide and conquer”DGFEZ has been maximizing the performance of its overseas IR activities and accumulated experiences to achieve tangible results in attracting investments by tailoring its strategies for a narrowed-down selection of targets. Now that the DGFEZ is entering the 2nd phase of its history, it chooses to focus on countries with high investment potential such as Germany and Japan. This “divide and conquer” strategy will enable it to respond flexibly to changes in international circumstances.

Making use of international eventsDGFEZ authorities actively participates in various international events such as Istanbul-Gyeongju World Culture Expo 2013 in Istanbul (Sept. 2013) and the 22nd World Energy Congress (Oct. 2013). It recognized the events as an opportunity for practical investment negotiations by building preliminary investor relations with participating companies ahead of the upcoming year.

Strengthening city-province cooperationDaegu City and Gyeongbuk Province plan to form a delegation for joint investment attraction to send to large-scale overseas expos and exhibitions, where international investors and businesses gather. In doing so, efficiency of investment attraction activities will be raised while the real effects of the economic integration of Daegu and Gyeongbuk will be enhanced.

Building a sturdy R&D databaseBuilding sturdy infrastructure for R&D will be the driving force behind the rise of Daegu Technopolis as a mecca of the IT convergence industry. Already situated inside the Technopolis is DGIST, ETRI - Daegu Gyeongbuk Research Center, KITECH - Daegu Center, and Daegu National Science Museum, while the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials will open soon. The presence of this range of research institutions equipped with expertise allows the Daegu Technopolise to formulate region-based matrix strategies for four major specialized fields: smart IT convergence devices, medical convergence devices and materials, green energy convergence, and mechatronics convergence. High rate of land sales, diverse car parts companies move inWith the expected completion on December 31st, 2013, about 90% of the land has been sold. So far, forty two domestic firms and seven foreign companies have moved in, of which twenty deal with auto parts, another twenty with metal processing and machinery parts, and nine with electricity, chemical, etc. As the relevant companies, such as suppliers of raw materials, logistics firms and manufactures, are evenly distributed in this region, it is possible for the companies operating in the district to reveal a strong competitive edge.

Cornerstone of creative economy and job creationMany promising companies from home and abroad including DSSK, PNDT, Jin Yang, and Han Jung have either begun or completed factory construction. When they begin operations in the 2nd half of 2014, it is estimated that about 3,500 new jobs and additional 1,000 indirect employments will be created. All told, Yeongcheon populations will be increased by 100,000 and employment creating effects, approximately 4.5% per 1,000 people, will be carried out. As such, the district is expected to play an important role in promoting local economy.

Multinational global high-tech auto parts makers are choosing the Yeongcheon Industry District as their final destination

Yeongcheon Industry District is located behind Busan, Ulsan, and Changwon, which comprise Korea’s largest production base for finished automobiles. Lightning-speed ONE-STOP administrative service supportMajor considerations for foreign investors and domestic companies when deciding to invest in a region are associated with oncerning various permits and licenses that they may encounter during construction. In fact, the Japanese company Daicel Corp. ran into various problems related to its factory construction such as cultural properties and fire protection facilities when it began investment in November 2011. To prepare for such problems, DGFEZ Authority dispatched a public official to help solve all of the problems, and the factory construction was completed as planned. Dicel Corporation has expressed its satisfaction with DGFEZ’s proactive support. Transportation hubDongdaegu Station, Ulsan Station, and the Singyeongju KTX Station are easily accessible from the Yeongcheon Industry District. The Gyeongbu Expressway Yeongcheon IC is five minutes away, and expressways connect Daegu to Busan and Pohang. Q Hi, first of all, thank you for taking your time to

have interview with me today. Please give me a brief

introduction of yourself. (including your home town,

hobbies, etc.)

I grew up in small towns in the Midwestern part of

the United States, in the state of Illinois. For the past

eleven years I have lived in Zurich, Switzerland. I like

to ski in the winter, and if I am someplace warm near

the ocean, I like to scuba dive.

Q i know that you are currently in charge of Multi-

scale robotics Lab of the institute of robotics and

intelligent systems at swiss Federal institute of

Technology Zurich. you visited DGisT for the first time

in June 6, 2010 in order to specialize in the study of

robotics engineering. what was your first impression

of Korea and Daegu?

Korea is a country with big ideas and hard working

people that make these ideas happen. It is very

impressive to watch DGIST being built from the ground

up in such a short time. I find the people of Daegu are

very nice, down-to-earth people.

Q i think it seems like that you had a great interest in robot

and science since you were young. what motivated you to

study robotics engineering?

I planned to study control engineering after I got my bachelor’s

degree, but the closest project I could find was in robotics, so I

accidentally started studying robotics. It was a good accident.

Q what was the most memorable moment as an adjunct

professor in the department of robotics engineering at

DGisT?

My most memorable moment was when we found out one

of the projects we started at DGIST was going to appear on

the cover of one of the top journals in our field. Then I knew

robotics engineering at DGIST was going to become a first

class program.

Q what is the vision for the future of robotics engineering

and what would you like to accomplish in the future with your

students at DGisT?

We will soon see more medical robotics adopted in hospitals,

and the next step after that will be microrobotics in hospitals. I

want the students at DGIST to lead this effort in microrobotics,

and I want to see them doing research that ends up in

hospitals and helps people.

Q what was the best food you had in Daegu?

I really enjoyed seeing a traditional Korean play in Hahoe Folk Village, An-dong,

even though I didn’t understand much.

Q i want to have your thoughts about ‘philosophy’ and ‘happiness’ of your life.

what was the best book you have ever read and please tell me about your motto

in life.

The most important book I read was when I was 18 years old. It was by the

philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and was called “On the Genealogy of Morals.”

It helped me form a philosophy about life, about delivering on your promises

and not making excuses when things go wrong. My favor quote is by the famous

engineer Theodore von Karman: “The scientist describes what is; the engineer

creates what never was.” I want my engineering students at DGIST to “create

what never was.”

Q Finally, Daegu Gyeongbuk Free economic Zone (DGFeZ) attracts many foreign

investments and foreigners to live by providing housing, education, and cultural

The Sayuksin, six ministers of the Joseon Dynasty who opposed the usurpation of throne by King Sejo, suffered a tragic death. Paeng-nyeon Park, Sam-mun Seong, Wi-ji Ha, Gae Yi, Seong-won Yu, and Eung-bu Yu - their loyalty to the former king Danjong turned them into rebels who were all executed. Today, the only remaining bloodline of the six families- the Suncheon Park Clan - can be found in Myogol Village in Daegu. Let's visit the place that the Sayuksin called home.

Paeng-nyeon Park, the only one of the martyred six to leave an offspring

The labor pains began. The wife of Paeng-nyeon

Park‘s second son clenched her teeth. She, a

member of the Seongju Lee clan, had returned to her

mother's house in Daegu for the childbirth. The baby

was destined to die after birth because her husband's

household, the Park clan, was deemed a rebel family

and had since dispersed and scattered. She had just

received word that her husband, Soon Park, was

hung to death when the contractions started. She

chased away the painful thoughts by shaking her

head.

When the Sayuksin were being tortured in prison, King Sejo

tested them by reciting the lyrics to "Hayeoga," the song that

Taejong sang to Jeong Mong-ju. Paeng-nyeon Park expressed

his loyalty to the former king and reciprocated in kind with the

above poem. Some of the lines are recorded above. The son

of high minister Jung-rim Park, Paeng-nyeon Park was born

in 1417 in a farming village of Hwadeok-hyeon. He passed

the civil service examination in the 16th year of King Sejong

(1434). He was favored by Sejong the Great, who selected him

as a scholar in Jiphyeonjeon, the "Hall of Worthies" along

with Sam-mun Seong. When King Sejo assumed the throne,

he plotted the reinstatement of King Danjong. The attempts

ended in failure and everyone involved in the plot along with

their family members were executed in the second year of

King Sejo's reign (1456).

The Sayuksin died in the hands of King Sejo for refusing to

acknowledge his forced takeover of the throne and attempting

to restore King Danjong to power. As a result, all the direct

male descendants up to the third generation were hung

to death, while the females became maidservants of the

government.

hat she needed to do right now was focus

on delivering the baby and nothing else. She

pushed with all her might. It felt like her bones were

being crushed but she would not give up. As soon as

she heard the baby's willful wailing, she fainted. When

she came back to her senses, she saw that the baby had

been washed and dressed in a white benet jeogori, the

traditional clothing worn by newborns. Her maidservant

was sitting gently by her side and said, "You did a great

job. You have a healthy son." She looked at her baby's tiny

face. The newborn closely resembled his grandfather.

"Your grandfather would've been overjoyed to meet you..."

She could not hold back her tears any longer.

She and her maidservant, who was also pregnant,

agreed to switch babies with one other if the maidservant

gave birth to a girl. By divine providence, the maidservant

had a baby girl. The boy was named Bi Park朴婢 and

would be raised as the maidservant’s child. She turned

to her maidservant and said, "This baby came out of your

womb." Needing no further explanation, the maidservant

received the baby into her arms and took him to her

home in Myogol Village. Growing up there in secret, the

baby's life was spared.

This baby lived to be the only descendant of the entire

Sayuksin and their families. He grew up secretly in

Myogol Village. In the days of King Seongjong, the new

king, he even entered public service under the name

"Il-san Park." With the inheritance he received from his

mother's family as their only heir, he built a house for his

own family there and settled in Myogol. As time went by,

the extended Park family inhabited village, which grew

and grew. As such, he became the head of the Myogol

Suncheon Park clan.

survey of Myogol, a village protected by the descendents

Upon entering Myogol Village from the

wide road and pass the bus stop in front of

the community hall, the gentle village-like

atmosphere leads you into a different world just

a few meters away. Indications of life almost go

unnoticed in this world marked by a leisurely

silence that flows through the perfectly curved

paths, tidy ivory colored hanoks - traditional

Korean houses, and glossy black roof tiles.

Once we passed through the entrance, we

are greeted by a kind middle-aged woman,

an elderly man slowly riding a bicycle, and a

dog wagging its tail. At one point in its history,

Myogol Village was crowded with more than

300 houses.

As the years passed, however, the younger

generations moved to the city, leaving only

about 30 hanoks still intact. The village

entrance is marked by Chunghyodang,

originally built as an annexed house by the

county governor of Geumsan-gun, Sunggo, a

seventh generation descendant of Paengnyeon

Park, in the 22nd year of King Injo's reign (1644).

Later, it was renamed "Chunghyodang" and

used as an educational space to teach loyalty,

filial piety, and law. The house was originally

built with five rooms across the front and two

on the sides, but an upper floor was built in

1995 when the house was moved to its current

location.

Myogol Village remembers the loyalty of the sayuksin

In the innermost part of the village is Yuksinsa Temple, a shrine in

honor of the Sayuksin. The shrine houses the ancestral tablets of the

Sayuksin along with Taegojeong Pavilion and Sungjeoldang. When

entering through Waesammun, the outer gates, the shrine's premises

blanketed by a pristine lawn enter my view. The area is clean and

charming, but stately at the same time. To the left is a pond with fresh

lotus leaves in it. Front and center is a staircase above which you can

see Hongsalmun, a red spiked gate. Behind the gates, a large six-sided

monument preserves the records of the Sayuksin's achievements. The

top of the steep staircase is marked by Naesammun, the inner gates that

guard the shrine. A peek through the cracks of the locked gate reveals the

shrine's wooden signboard that reads Sungjeongsa崇正祠. The Sayuksin's

ancestral tablets are enshrined inside. Behind the building, stone steps

climb a low hill, on which stands Chunguisa Temple. The black roof tiles

and the panorama of Myogol Village stretch out below the hilltop like

distant waves.

On the right side of the premises is Taegojeong Pavilion, Treasure

No. 554. During the Japanese Invasion (1592-1598), the pavilion was

damaged while the corresponding main residence was burnt down.

The pavilion was reconstructed in 1614. Most pavilions have just one

signboard, but two are hung on Taegojeong. "Ilsiru" is carved on the

second one, which means "living properly and uprightly," much like the

loyalty demonstrated by Paengnyeon Park. Also, this area is surrounded

by buildings designated as cultural heritages: important folklore cultural

property Samgaheon, Daegu tangible cultural properties Dogokjae, and

Ungyeongjeongsa.

History and fidelity can be seen where ever you look in Myogol Village.

Maybe that explains why the descendants of Paengnyeon Park living

there seemed so proud of their village; each of them was so warm and

kind-hearted. Even the wind blowing through the village where the spirit

of the Sayuksin lives on is crisp and clear.

hat do you associate with “Guryongpo”? Most may think of the region’s famed king crabs and

gwamegi (half-dried saury). Let's revisit history class, shall we? When the Japanese left Korea

after liberation, their abandoned houses were referred to as jeoksan gaok (literally, "enemy houses").

In Guryongpo there are especially many of these because Japanese migrants in search of new fisheries

had explored and settled there, giving it the nickname "Japan Town." Such residences have been

transformed into the Modern Culture History Alley. See what it looked like 100 years ago.

around. The stately entrance framed by the words "Guryongpo

Modern Culture History Alley" also welcomes me. Up until several

years ago, a maze of houses used to be scattered around the entrance,

but now a newly paved road leads up to Guryongpo Park. A slightly

steep 67-step staircase makes up part of the road and 120 stone pillars

stand on both sides - 61 on the left, 59 on the right. The names of

those who sponsored memorial tablets for patriot martyrs in 1960 are

engraved on each pillar. It is said that the names of the Japanese who

built Guryongpo Port were carved on those stones until liberation, when

Korean locals covered them with cement and engraved them anew.

Though the pillars were turned around, not even cement can erase the

bitter traces of history.

Trekking up the steep stairs to the park is hard work, but the view

overlooking Guryongpo Port is worth it. The beads of sweat on my face

dry in the wind while I fully take in the view before going back down to

explore the alley.

Footprints of the alley

The first Japanese settlers of Guryongpo can be traced back to

approximately 100 years ago. In 1906, eighty fishing boats found their

way here in search of mackerel. As their fishing business boomed,

Japanese flocked to the village. By the time of Japanese colonization of

Korea in 1932, Guryongpo was home to 287 Japanese households with

1,161 people. Shipbuilding and canned food processing brought great

wealth to the Japanese settlers, who built Japanese-style homes there.

The Modern Culture History Alley was once

the commercial center of Guryongpo, bustling

with restaurants, bakeries, seafood shops,

pubs, and a department store. Restoration

of the fifty buildings that remain standing

today began in 2010 to create the Modern

Culture History Alley, which also served as

the filming set of the popular TV drama series

"Eyes of Daybreak." A small plaza in the alley

showcases past and present pictures along

with a map of the former Guryongpo layout.

Most of the buildings are inhabited and not

open to the public, but two allow visitors to

taste the quaint beauty of modern Japan.

"Hohomyeonok" is a restaurant refashioned

from Guryongpo's finest lodging facility at the

time, "Daedong Inn." Japanese-style tea house

"Hurusatoya" uses the building as it was 80

years ago, a restaurant named "Ilsimjeom."

Shipbuilding and canned food processing brought great wealth to the

Japanese settlers, who built Japanese-style homes there.

Peering at Japanese lifestyle

After looking around, I find myself at the end of the alley at the Modern History Museum. The

Japanese-style house originally belonged to Hashimoto Zenkichi, who migrated here in the 1920s. It

is said that he shipped the building materials himself from Japan to build the house.

Koreans moved in to the house once the Hashimoto family returned to Japan, residing there until

the City of Pohang purchased it in 2010 and began the remodelling. Both the interior and exterior

have been restored to its 1920s state and are preserved in good condition. The legend of Guryongpo,

images of the Japanese settlement and lifestyle, past and present photos of Guryongpo, and

pictures of the Japanese leaving after the war are on display throughout the first and second floor.

You can see what daily life in the house was like when you go upstairs to the master bedroom and

girls' room, where life-size mannequins are displayed with actual furniture such as a heating stove,

kotatsu, Buddhist shrine, and closet. Interactive TV monitors explain what "Guryongpo" means, tell

stories and show interviews with former Japanese migrants in Korean, English and Japanese. The

kiosk in the upstairs study introduces traditional Japanese houses, Japanese household supplies

and the features of the Hashimoto house.

In Guryongpo, traces of the past are preserved as they are while life continues in the present.

History and modernity go well together here; the memories will be treasured for years to come.

and Research Institute, DGIST aims to realize

research. DGIST is currently composed of 600 people including 203

Ph.D and Master's students, Next year the inaugural undergraduate

class of 200 students will begin their studies. Meanwhile qualitative

results have recorded three to six-fold growth in research

(dissertations, patents, and technology transfers).

DGIST introduced three major innovative programs to

foster global talents of knowledge creation: Korea's first non-

departmental unitary undergraduate program, professor-student

mentorship system for undergraduate education, and electronic

teaching materials for convergence education. First, the plan

behind the non-departmental unitary undergraduate program is

to encourage goal-oriented active learning that transcends the

orthodox course of study. Students will take courses in humanities,

creative leadership and entrepreneurship in addition to the basic

sciences and engineering. This wholistic brain development will

equip them as leaders of the 21st century. Second, DGIST adds a

substantive element to undergraduate education through Korea's

first "professor-student mentorship system for undergraduate

education" in which professors are assigned to students to provide

guidance along with research and education, and mentor them with

career path and life in general. Third, DGIST faculty has developed

Korea's first e-books for convergence education, a two-year project

that facilitates exchange across disciplines.

Noticing these moves, prospective students from across the

nation applied for entrance to DGIST in mass number during

the first application period. The 9.07 to 1 acceptance rate was a

big surprise to all, given its status as a newly established local

university.

DGIST is engaged in efforts to enhance the

competitiveness of the strategic industries in Daegu and

Gyeongbuk. On "Open Innovation Day," local CEOs involved

in automobile parts, IT, robotics, textile, energy and other

related industries are invited for technological exchanges

and transfers. DGIST Robotics Systems Research Division

has developed technologies that will accelerate the

development of autonomous vehicles - namely, obstacle

detection and blind spot sensing radar technologies to

prevent automobile collisions. These radars alert drivers

to obstacles in their blind spots and the technologies have

already been transferred to local car parts businesses.

The Robotics Systems Research Division also developed

a real time operating system for vehicles named OSCAR-

OSEK in 2010 as a vehicle-use software standard platform

that has been certified by international standards. It is

being used in the development of engine control units

(ECU) and vehicle data displays. Moreover, vehicle software

technologies developed on this platform have not only

been transferred to local car companies, but also provided

as an investment to set up a research firm that develops

control devices for lightweight electric vehicles. Providing

technologies as a type of investment to set up a company

goes one step further than simple technological transfers

done by universities or government-funded research

institutes until now. It is an attempt to change the paradigm

of technology commercialization and looks to be a concrete

model of creative economy and boosting the local economy.

Three such firms have been founded and registered as lab

firms in the INNOPOLIS Daegu .

As part of DGIST’s efforts to grow as a world-renowned

research-oriented university, it has been organizing the

Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) since last year, in which

Nobel laureates are invited to speak to students and faculty

from DGIST as well as students from science academies and

high schools. Lecturers during the year 2013 included Nobel

Laureate in Chemistry Roger Kornberg, Nobel Laureate in

Physics Klaus von Klitzing, and Nobel Laureate in Chemistry

Harry Kroto. These lectures have greatly influenced and

inspired the future scientists in attendance.

DGIST also strives to cultivate character by holding

leadership courses led by opinion leaders in science

and technology. It also arranges musical and theatrical

performances for both students and locals at least six times

a year, along with Biseul cultural events with commentary.

As such, DGIST sparks creativity and the senses through its

educational curriculum, industry-academic cooperation,

guest lectures and cultural events. With its first round of

undergraduate admissions around the corner, DGIST is

eager and determined to cement its status as one of Korea's

leading academia.

Two years have passed since Japanese machine tool maker Nakamura-Tome Precision Industry

Co., Ltd. first broke ground at Daegu Technopolis District to open its Korean branch Korea

Nakamura-Tome (KNT Co., Ltd). Today, the factory is in full production and aiming to export its

products to countries in North America and Europe, including Germany. Focusing on hiring and

training from the local labor pool, KNT is contributing to the community and living up to its title

as Daegu Technopolis' first foreign firm.

Nakamura-Tome Precision Industry has been a

producer of multi-tasking machine tools and glass

processing machines for liquid crystal displays (LCD)

since its establishment in 1960. Seventy percent of its

products are exported to North America and Europe.

With sales offices in 33 countries, the promising global

corporation boasts of a well-founded reputation in

Europe, North America and Asia for making the best

Destined encounter with Daegu

KNT's entry into Daegu Technopolis was much like

fate. KNT had been scouting sites with a desired time

frame that lined up perfectly with the development

schedule of Daegu Technopolis. However, issues like

employee living conditions, legal uncertainties, and

cultural differences faced when entering a foreign country

caused the officials Nakaumra-Tome to take a slow and

cautious approach.

Fortunately, DGFEZ Authority was able to alleviate any

concerns that Japanese company had. The DGFEZ, who

already was in contact with KNT, extended a full range

of support by arranging employee housing, introducing

local suppliers and providing helpful information to

explain the legal and cultural differences between the two

neighboring nations.

KNT also received a package of tax benefits on

corporate tax, acquisition tax, property tax and imported

capital goods that would have otherwise been a

substantial load on its entry into Korea. All the above and

a subsidy from the City of Daegu was what sealed the deal

for the Japanese firm to embark on its journey of opening

a factory overseas. Thanks to the DGFEZ Authority's

timely guidance and proactive support when the foreign

company needed it most, KNT was even able to begin

operations ahead of schedule. KNT, built on a $19.7

million investment, takes up 5,230㎡ on a 20,000㎡ plot.

After completion of the facility in October 2012, the factory

began full-fledged operations in April 2013, and shipment

of its 6th product was scheduled for October. Currently,

it's all hands on deck to fill delayed orders.

The young Byeong-Chul Lee enters Ingyo-dong. The dirt road is frozen solid. With

every step, he feels the bumps on the road. Mr. Lee raises his coat collar ever so snugly.

The February breeze stings sharply, as if it is jealous of spring’s pending arrival.

He stands in front of a wooden building. His heart pounds. He had waited for this

moment for so long. With a deep breath, he takes off his gloves and places his hand on

the door. The coldness of the door travels through his body, like a silent message that

this was the very place he would take root.

Once inside the building, Mr. Lee looks around the interior. The icy breeze blows inside

as well, but he does not budge. He envisions the new Samsung in his mind; Instantly,

the empty space transforms into an office bustling with people. The phones are ringing,

typewriters are clicking away, and pages are being turned. You can hear the voices of

office-workers taking orders and buyers from afar. It all sounds very clear.

SamsungEven for Korea’s largest business group, Samsung, the road

was not always smooth. Samsung actually started out as a

small shop in a small wooden building that exported fruits,

vegetables and dried seafood and made noodles. The business

was established by the late Byeong-Chul Lee in Ingyo-dong,

Jung-gu, Daegu Metropolitan City and called Samsung Co.

Let's go back to 1938, when the young founding chairman was

building the foundation of what is now Samsung Group.

~ 201319971997 ~ 2013r. Lee hurried to bring in a desk and set up the office.

Although his father left him a plot of land that could

produce about 300 sacks of rice, he didn't have much capital

left because he invested the inheritance in a rice mill and a

car company only to fail. All he had as capital was a mere

30,000 Korean won. He had to get back on his feet, no matter

what it took.

He did not even buy a house for his family. Instead, he

created a small space inside the wooden building and lived

there with his wife and children. His young children surely

must not have been thrilled about their living arrangements,

but his wife, Mrs. Doo-Eul Park did not complain once.

Spring came and everything seemed to come to life

again. On March 1st, Chairman Byeong-Chul Lee opened

Samsung Corporation. As full-fledged operations began,

Chairman Lee exported specialty products from Daegu and

Gyeongbuk to nearby countries. In 1938, Joseon was a poor

and hopeless state under Japanese colonization, so it was

virtually impossible to sell products to his fellow countrymen.

That is why he turned his sights overseas. He thought that

selling good-quality Korean agricultural products and dried

seafood to Manchuria and China would bring capital into

Joseon.

Before starting Samsung, Chairman Lee had travelled

to Manchuria and different parts of China to study what

was needed there and to see if exporting would be possible,

which proved to be a huge help in running the business.

He also thought long and hard about merchandise that

his business could produce. Limited capital eliminated the

option of products requiring large start-up funds, so he

decided on noodles. He set up a flour mill and a noodle-

making machine on the first floor and began to make

noodles for local sale, branding it “Byeolpyo Guksoo” (“Star

Noodles”).

Noodles were a popular dish to the people of Joseon at a

time when there wasn’t much to eat. It was inexpensive and

plentiful. One pot of noodles was perfect for filling the family

members' hungry stomachs. Once the machines began to

operate, Chairman Lee's choice proved to be a good one.

Samsung’s “Star Noodles” grew in popularity by the day,

and customers bustled about in front of the store. People

dragged their bike carts and ox carts from the early morning

to buy Samsung’s noodles.

Later, Chairman Lee acquired the Japanese-owned

Joseon Breweries and his company flourished even more.

That's exactly what happened when Samsung started its

businesses at the very early days, right here, in Daegu.

In fact Samsung has gradually made its way into the

world by exporting crab apples grown in Daegu and dried

seafood from Gyeongbuk’s waters and became one of

the global leading companies. It seems like that both the

geographical characteristics and the forward-thinking

insight by the leader were the driving force that shaped such

a massive corporation.

ccording to the data from Statistics Korea in 2011, the leading

cause of death among Koreans was cancer, followed by

cerebrovascular disease and heart disease, respectively. This

second cause of death for Koreans is all the more fear-inducing

because these diseases sneak up without regard for time or place,

and warning signs in smaller blood vessels can go undetected

in medical examinations. Cardio-cerebrovascular diseases refer

to the array of heart diseases including coronary heart diseases

(myocardial infarction, angina) and cardiac failure, brain dysfunctions

such as stroke (cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction), as well

as pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia,

and arteriosclerosis. As part of a comprehensive set of measures to

deal with these diseases, the Ministry of Health & Welfare set out to

designate regional cardio-cerebrovascular centers throughout the

country. The Cardio-Cerebrovascular Center at KNUH was opened

in December 2009 after the hospital received the designation for the

Daegu Gyeongbuk region.

The center not only treats acute diseases, but is involved in

everything related to heart attacks and strokes from disease

prevention campaigns and awareness to emergency response

guidelines, rehabilitation, follow-up and statistical surveys.

Specialists are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and there

is a separate intensive care unit for the center's patients. The

center functions as a social safety net, as it is linked to all the local

hospitals in the region, National Emergency Management Agency

and other relevant institutions in the area.

Cutting-edge equipment and the best medical staff form a dream team

The center is contacted while an emergency patient is en route

to the hospital. By the time the patient arrives at the center, medical

staff are well ready to receive the patient and perform the necessary

tests, diagnosis, treatment and surgery in a one-stop system. Since

blockages in the heart or brain vessels need to be cleared as soon

as possible to save the patient, specialists all agree in unison that

it is absolutely critical to shorten the time it takes for a patient to

be seen and appropriately treated by the doctor upon arrival at

the hospital. The standing record for emergency room arrival to

heart surgery was broken from 59 minutes to 53 minutes in 2003.

Considering how one minute can draw the line between life and

death for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, reducing the waiting

time by these six minutes has saved many lives.

The ‘good doctor’ by our side

‘Ring, ring~~’

o sooner does the phone ring the second

time around than Dr. Jae-Chan Park opens

his eyes, takes the call and skillfully changes his

clothes from the closet. Dr. Park can sense the

urgency of the voice on the other end. It was a call

from the doctor on night duty at the emergency

medical department, "I think surgery is needed

right away." From the voice, Dr. Park can tell the

patient's condition, as two doctors have worked

together for more than ten years.

"Please come as quickly as possible to the

hospital." Even before the sentence is finished,

Dr. Park's shoes are on and car keys in hand.

Without needing an explanation, his wife follows

him to the door and pats his shoulder. He takes

the elevator to the basement parking garage and

looks at his watch. It's 3 a.m.

Destiny brought Dr. Jae-Chan Park to the field of

neurosurgery. Seeing the brain was like love at first

sight. How could there be such an amazing organ

in our bodies? It mesmerized him. The brain was

scarlet and shiny like cobblestones in a flowing

stream, which was slightly different from the

picture he'd seen.

He pulls in to the Cardio-Cerebrovascular Disease Center

in less than five minutes. He chose to live near the hospital

in case of urgent surgeries like this. Having wiped his face

with a moist towelette while driving, he rushes into the

emergency center. The doctor who had called looks relieved.

Dr. Park examines the patient's CT scan. Cerebral

aneurysm. Part of the blood vessel has swollen up like a ball

that could burst at any time - a very dangerous situation.

The patient is a man in his forties with a good build. Since

the blocked vessel is keeping oxygen and nutrients from

entering the brain, surgery is urgent. However, Dr. Park

decides to have a discussion with the patient's guardian first.

Operating on cerebral aneurysms entails high risks that

may cause death or paralysis during surgery, which implies

that surgery is not always the best option after detecting

the problem. That is why the doctor's speedy judgement is

an important factor in this life or death situation involving

cerebrovascular disease. After examining the patient, Dr.

Park decides to perform a relatively simple surgery above

the eyebrow.

Dr. Park rushes to the guardian, who looks to be the

patient's wife. Her eyes are swollen from crying so much,

and she is barefoot. After explaining what a cerebral

aneurysm is, he adds, "I will cut a small hole above the

eyebrow, so the scar will be minimal, but we have to see

how he holds up after surgery. What's important now is to

reduce the risk factors through surgery first." Scared, all

she can do is nod. "Please take good care of him." Putting

her small voice behind him, Dr. Park heads towards the

operating room.

The anesthesiologist has already finished preparing the

patient for surgery. Dr. Park begins by making an incision

above the brow. This way, he can insert a clip on the swollen

part of the vessel near the eyelid. A small incision allows

for a quick recovery with minimal scarring, but demands

more concentration for the surgeon. Dr. Park forgets about

everything else and immerses himself into the operation.

of becoming a neurosurgeon since then, and applied

to a dozen hospitals in the United States as his military

duty drew to a close. At last, he became the only one of

his peers to return to Korea to practice, among others

who had gained hands-on experience in America. To this

day, he has not once regretted choosing neurosurgery.

Though it is physically exhausting when he is called in

unexpectedly, he still finds enjoyment and happiness

in being able to do what he has yearned to do and help

patients who need him.

After the operation, Dr. Park's eyes meet the pleading

eyes of the guardian. "You must have worried a lot" he

says, as if he can read her mind. "The operation went

well, but this is just the beginning. How he does from now

on is what matters. We'll keep a close eye on him. We put

out the small fires for now."

She bows her head in appreciation over and over, even

after Dr. Park walks away. He finally relaxes and looks out

the window. The light of daybreak has started to spread

across the sky once darkened by night.

Though it is physically exhausting when he is

to do and help patients who need him.

The Food in Daegu!

oreign tourists are flocking to Daegu and Gyeongbuk,

famous for gukbap, makchang, and jjimgalbi restaurants.

From napjak mandu, a famed Daegu specialty, to ddaro

gukbap, a thumbs-up cure for hangovers, Daegu has plenty of

dishes that are sure to captivate the taste buds of foreigners.

We set out in search of the best taste in Daegu with three

international students from the Catholic University of Daegu

Language Education Center located in Hayang, Gyeongsan City.

Daegu’s top flavors

Jackson is a 22-year-old South American

student from Ecuador who has a sociable

personality and playful facial expressions. He first

found Korean food to be too spicy, but six months

later, he is a self-proclaimed Korean food maniac.

When asked which Korean food he would

recommend, he said samgyeopsal, hands

down. Making a lettuce wrap with a slice of the

grilled pork belly, other vegetables and sauce,

and stuffing it in your mouth is what makes the

experience so fun. Jackson plans to stay in Korea

for about two more years to study business. He

looks forward to trying Daegu's famous ddaro

gukbap, a warmer alternative to naengmyeon,

cold buckwheat noodles typically eaten with

samgyeopsal during the summer months. Good

luck! It is a bit spicy.

Jane is a 23 year old Kenyan. After seven months in Korea,

she confesses that she enjoys living here more than Kenya.

In fluent Korean, she introduced herself as a happy, sociable

and positive person with a constant smile on her face. "You can

do it if you set your mind to it," she says. Open to all kinds of

foods, she has already fallen for the flavors of Daegu. On the

list of her top picks are bibimbap, ddaro gukbap, and kimchi.

Preferring spicy red pepper paste over soy sauce to mix with

rice, Jane frequents the multi-course Korean restaurants

in Daegu Dalseong Complex and recommends them to

foreigners. She is also eager to try Mt. Biseul Balu Bibimbap, a

dish that the Buddhist temples in Dalseong are famous for. The

colder weather makes her think of all the hot Korean stews.

She puts her thumbs up and says, "Korean food is the best!"

Jane promised to take her friends to try gopchang, grilled

small intestines of a cow. Her research led her to Daegu

Anjirang Gopchang Street, where gopchang sizzles above fired

briquettes. There, you can enjoy the original taste of the chewy

grilled intestines, not to mention heavy portions and low prices.

More than fifty restaurants line the street; each shop seasons

the gopchang differently and serves their own brand of dipping

sauces. We wonder how Jane will react when she takes her

first bite.

Ddaro gukbap was born when the infrastructure of taverns and jangteo gukbap (sold

in marketplaces) collided with yukgaejang. The name translates to rice and stew

that are served separately. This native Daegu dish is made by simmering beef bones

into a broth for at least seven hours, and then adding green onions, radish, and

coagulated cow blood before boiling once more. It is a combination of haejangguk,

yukgaejang, and gomtang.

The shy-looking 19-year-old Korean drama

fan enjoyed Korean food fairly often in China.

During the year she has lived in Gyeongsan,

Tianxi has travelled to many places and tried

many dishes. The memories she is making

in Korea are piling up like snow during a

snowstorm. She particularly remembers the

Andong alcohol (soju) and Andong jjimdak

(braised chicken) she had on a trip to Hahoe

Village in Andong one October day, not to

mention the picturesque scenery. It was a

memorable moment for her to taste the deep

flavors of Korea.

One more thing! Tianxi and a close friend

were in downtown Daegu (Dongseong-ro)

when they were intrigued by flat dumplings

that looked like spacecrafts.

Called napjak mandu, these dumplings

are made with healthy vegetables and

covered in tasty sauces. She says it is a must-

try for foreigners.

The filling for napjak mandu is made with relatively simple

ingredients like glass noodles, chives, salt and pepper. The

sauces vary according to preference. Sold in neighborhood

snack shops throughout Daegu, it is a must-have dish that

many like to mix with ddeokbokki and odaeng (fish cakes).
