DONNER PARK IS CELEBRATING 100 years!

DID YOU KNOW?Donner Park land, originally owned by the Perry family, was called Perry’s Grove & can be traced as far back as 1872.

In 1916, William H. Donner bought the park land for $20,000 & gifted the deed to the City of Columbus in 1917.

The Donner Park Shelter House was constructed in 1925.

Donner Center was gifted to the City of Columbus in 1947.

Donner Pool (now Aquatic Center) was

opened a year later in 1948.

Every spring (late March to early April) a wildflower named the Spring Beauty blooms in Donner Park. This

wildflower is also known as a “Fairy Spud.”

In 2015, the old shuffle board court outline was

renovated into two Pickleball Courts.

Donner Park is the 11th largest city park at 32 acres. The park houses of 15 different species of trees.

The 30-foot high piece is the largest work by Tinguely in the united States. Columbus, Indiana, a city known for both its great architectural designs and its world-class manufacturing operations, is proud to be home to a sculpture that successfully marries art and engineering.

Chaos I cycles through a series of motions to simulate a day in a life, beginning slowly at first, adding movements and then winding down again. At the peak of its chaotic movements, steel balls roll and crash through a caged track, catching the attention of all ages.

Bike sharing with colmbike makes it economical and convenient to use bikes for trips that are too far to walk but too short to drive. As a member, you ccan use a colmbike to run an errand, grab lunch, travel from the bus stop to your office, or just get some fresh air. There are many reason to use colmbike as there are members!

That’s what makes bike sharing so great: a bike that’s there when you need it and gone when you don’t.

With your colmbike bicycle, you don’t have to look for a parking space or bring your own bike with you everywhere you go. Plus, riding a bike is good for your health and for the environment. It’s the newest and best way to get around town.

The columbike bicycles are specially designed for both you and the city: the bikes fit people of all sizes, thanks to an easy-to-use adjustable seat post. A great front basket provides a space to stow your belongings while riding. Fenders, skirt guards and chain guards to keep your clothes clean. Automatic lights help keep you safe at all times. Three speeds are perfect for your short commute. You’ll love it!

visit https://columbike.bcycle.com for more information on fees and how to become a member.

MILL RACE PARKIS CELEBRATING 25 years!

DID YOU KNOW?During the 1930s through the early 1960s, Mill Race Park was

once know as “Death Valley” because the area was plagued by flood waters making them subjective to a multitude of

problems. Death Valley dates as far back as the late 1800s.

W W Mooney & Sons Tannery was located where Mill Race Park is currently. The 5-ft stone flood wall from the tannery still

remains in the parking lot.

The original Clifty Bridge was located on Gladstone

Avenue before being moved to Mill Race Park

only later to be destroyed by fire. The current covered bridge is from Eagle Creek

Reservoir.

The shape of the restroom roofs make an “M” for men’s and a “W” for women’s.

In 1963, the park site was purchased by the city and

cleaned up, transforming it into the first iteration of Mill Race Park, originally called Tipton Park. Tipton Park is still in existence and is the

city’s smallest park at .1 acre.

In the late 1980s a redesign and update was awarded to Michael Van Valkenburgh, and

featuring structures by Stanley Saitowitz resulting in the completion of the current

design of Mill Race Park.

Mill Race Park is the 2nd largest city park composed of 83 acres including a playground, an 84 ft observation tower, amphitheater, fishing pond and more. The land is subject to severe annual flooding, during which sixty

percent of the park is under water.
