BY CHUCK THIBEAULT
Oh, the Places We’ll Go in York Durham Headwaters It is the first day of summer vacation and one of my kids has al-ready uttered the two words that make me see red – “I’m bored”. Maybe it is because in my day (I love being old enough to say that!), we may have been bored but would never have had the nerve to announce it. I can picture the reaction my dad would have had if I did. The next image that pops into my head is of me cutting the grass, vacuuming the car or digging a deep hole “just because”!
But, instead of launching into an eye-roll-worthy tirade, I actually took a moment and realized that they could legitimate-ly be bored. For most of the last 16 months, they have been stuck at home with the same five people. No in-person visits with friends. Learning on-line. Not even their usual barrage of sports to give them a break from the endless mundaneness of a COVID-19 lifestyle.
Our family loves a good road trip. The idea of waking up somewhere new every day and doing something different gives us all a sense of adventure. When we plan out our routes, we make sure the kids are involved in the decision making. Each of us gets to pick one thing that we absolutely must do and then, depending on how much free time is left, we go into full-on negotiation/bargaining mode to come to a consensus on what other things we are going to do to fill the gaps.
2021, while shaping up to be a better year than last, is still fraught with uncertainty when it comes to making those huge travel plans. My personal concerns are less about our health and safety and more about cancellation policies, getting back, quarantines and local restrictions – things I really wouldn’t have given a second thought about in pre-COVID planning. To be honest, I just want to go places I know and do things I am famil-iar with. I don’t have it in me to plan for the unknown.
So, with that in mind, we have decided to plan three mini-road-trips this summer. Having worked as Executive Director of Central Counties Tourism for the last nine years, I have gotten to
know and have a keen respect for the tourism stakeholders in Durham Region, York Region and Headwaters Tourism Region. I also know how much they have suffered since March 2020. The kids also know about all of the great things to see and do in the area and liked the idea – with the caveat that we make each a real vacation by staying overnight while visiting.
I had actually been thinking of doing day trips, but the kids did have a point that part of the fun of any vacation is being away from home. And since we had already been planning on spending a week or so on the road, doing it in three shorter vacations isn’t going to cost any more and I won’t have to drive as much. This all happened last night. We concluded that each trip would be three days and two nights long, giving us nine days of activities to plan.
The boys instantly started negotiating that they should each get to pick two main activities, leaving three for the two parents. I countered by saying that they could each pick three main activities if Trish and I got to plan all of the gap activities and got to choose one restaurant per day. If you have been to

York, Durham and Headwaters (YDH), you already know why I did that. The food and beverage scene in all three regions is absolutely incredible. We even have amazing bootlegging tours! Check out www.temperanceandtemptation.ca.
None of my three boys are going to be bored over the next week or so. They have started doing their research to determine what we are going to do for three days in each of the regions. They have started the process through our website, yorkdurhamheadwaters.ca, and then I have seen them go to our stakeholder websites and even onto Google Maps to see if they can “encourage” Trish and I to pick a gap activity of their choosing.
I love this decision to do three mini road-trips for a couple of reasons. First, I am going to be completely comfortable and relaxed. I am technically going to be a tourist, but not feel out of place or in unfamiliar territory. After a year of fear and uncertain-ty, I can’t even put a price on that feeling.
Secondly, we now have three smaller vacations to look forward to, instead of one big hurrah in the middle of the summer. It is going to provide much needed activity several times through-out the summer and fall and keep us looking forward to some-thing every few weeks.
York, Durham and Headwaters has weeks’ worth of activities for you and your family. If you live in the GTHA, I know that our attractions and hospitality businesses would love to see you. Come for a day, a few days, or if you really need to get away from it all, spend a week or more. You aren’t going to hear “I’m bored” while doing amazing, familiar activities. I have even start-ed thinking about doing the same thing over winter holidays, Family Day weekend and March break.
Visit yorkdurhamheadwaters.ca for trip ideas and who knows, maybe we will bump into you at one of the many incredible attractions in the region.

Celebrating 20 years of ExcellenceYou would have to look back two decades to find the beginning of the Treetop Trekking story. It was in 2001 that a gentleman by the name of Jean-Marie was enrolled in a business school in Montreal after recently moving to Canada from France. As part of that class Jean-Marie created a business plan for and aerial adventure park, something he had seen back home, but that was unheard of in North America. His instructor Stephane was so captivated by this new and fun idea that, with a handshake, the two men decided to go into business together, the begin-ning a long-lasting friendship. The following year, after much planning and hard work the two partners opened Canada’s first zipline adventure park in Rawdon, Quebec.
Fast forward to 2021 and the company now welcomes hun-dreds of thousands of guests a year at eleven adventure park locations, six in Ontario under the name Treetop Trekking, and five in Quebec under the name Arbraska. Much has changed since those humble beginnings, but the spirit of the parks remain the same, offering fun and memorable outdoor activities for families, friends and groups of all types. Over the years, new adventure activities have been introduced at the parks that now make the spirit of Treetop Trekking available to all ages. The award winning Treewalk Village activity offered at the locations in Hamilton and Stouffville caters to the youngest explorers, and is centered around an entire village of treehouses connected by walkways, ramps and slides. The most loved activity at all the locations however remains the Zipline & Aerial Game Trek where guests climb from tree to tree on wooden bridges, net walk-ways, balance beams, ziplines and all kind of other elements.
Treetop Trekking has evolved to offer services beyond the ad-venture attractions that are open to the public. A construction division designs and builds aerial adventure attractions around
the world, for a wide range of clients, and an events division has operated temporary zipline installations at large scale events such as the 2015, Toronto Pan-Am Games.
At its core though the company’s goal remains simple, to create as many smiles as possible by offering unforgettable nature adventures. Today Stephane remains at the helm, leading a ded-icated team of staff with the spirit of Jean-Marie never far away.

30 Attractions Ontario
The past eighteen months have shaken our own communities and the entire world in a way we have never known. Everything we understood changed in the blink of an eye, and we were mandated to seek refuge within our own homes to keep our-selves and everyone around us safe. As a province, we worked together to do our part to overcome the pandemic; and though we are still fighting this battle, we have made great headway. As Summer 2021 approaches, Ontario now finds itself in a stage that allows for attractions to open and occupants to travel. But how safe is it, really?
Each Ontario attraction aims to provide the safest experience possible, working diligently to prepare for your visit – many in fact, implementing extra protocols to ensure that each guest receives the best and most sanitary experience possible. This includes adhering to capacity limits, sanitizer stations, request-ing mask-wearing, when necessary, markings to keep people safe and socially distant, timed ticketing, and additional proce-dures unique to each attraction. As eager as you are to visit, the businesses are equally excited to welcome you; and their goal is to make your time with them not only entertaining, but COVID-free and safe.
Support Local! The best way to support your Ontario attractions this summer is to visit local. Shop local, tour local and discover local. Take a hike in your local park or peruse the locally owned stores that make up your main town line. And of course, visit your local attractions – may it be an amusement park, a local zoo, and even roadside landmarks. They need your love, and they need your support. As a bonus this may be one of your safest options as well!
This summer, get outside and explore; but be sure to do it safely: call the attractions before you visit, or book your slot ahead of time. Prepare by going to the websites beforehand to ensure you have everything you need to experience as safe and pleas-ant a visit as possible. We are all in this together, and if we do our part, we can nurture Ontario’s tourism industry while simultane-ously giving ourselves the best summer imaginable.
To learn more about the various Ontario attractions and the dif-ferent ways they are operating to keep you safe, please visit our SightSeeing Safely in Ontario videos on our YouTube Channel. This can be found off the main site (link on top right of website). For coupons and information about what is open in Ontario, please visit attractionsontario.ca.

St. Jacobs VillageAs the model railway invokes a hint of nostalgia, so does a stroll through the charming village of St. Jacobs. It is like stepping back in time, seeming as though nothing much has changed since the town’s Old Order Mennonite settlers arrived here in the early 1800’s in Conestoga wagons from Pennsylvania. The jingle of horse tack and the clip-clop of hooves on pavement can still be heard. An open buggy comes into view, driven by a young lady in a long-sleeved dress, apron and bonnet. The Mennonite farmers pride themselves in maintaining their unique traditions and culture. The “Mennonite Story” at the Visitor Centre provides fascinating insight into their life. The many heritage buildings that line the main street are now upscale boutiques, craft shops and quilt galleries.
Butterflies Fly Free“Think of the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory as a tropical escape,”says conservatory board chair, Doug Wilson. With some 2,000 free-flying butterflies imported from Costa Rica and the Philippines, the inviting enclave is indeed an escape. With its cascading waterfalls, 150 species of plants, plenty of birds, bugs, turtles and fish, the conservatory is a nature lover’s dream. Don’t miss the honeybee observation hive – and if you visit during March Break, you will have the opportunity to put your taste buds to the test with samples of insect recipes.
All Fun &GamesVisit the Big Splash at Bingemans, and get wet and wild at the region’s largest waterpark. Afterwards join a game of beach volleyball, play mini-putt, venture into the 60 acre paintball area or head indoors to toss a few balls at Bingemans Kingpin Bowlounge. Kingpin is a family favourite, with 28 state-of-the-art lanes, high-tech computerized scoring and giant projection screens that add to the entertainment, or embarrassment, depending on the state of your game. Oh well, grab some nibbles and beer at the on-site Boston Pizza and just have fun. Aside from the upscale bowling, Bowlounge also features an extensive Playdium Game Centre.
