In a close battle for first place in the men's division, Don DiDonato nipped Reno Stirrat by a se cond for a 24:58 clocking over the tough F.D.R. hills. Bob Dinucci was in at fourth with a 25:53 for the first local fin isher. The women's division was well represented as Suzanne Shea finished 24th overall with a 28:34; outstanding running! Patty Nelson took second with a 30:12 while Lori Jorgensen, 30:58, finished third in the women's division. How about the men's masters? Ted Hainan was 6th overall with a 26:25 for first 40-49 age group. The men's 50-59 had a fine performance is Bob Kerney as he toured the course in 30:14. Bob Rogan dominated the 60+ with a 32:11. The girls 14 and under had two nice performances also. Elizabeth Brendan ran a 34:38 while Suzanne Kennedy ran a 36:05 (Results can be found on page 4.) WHO'S AFRAID OF SYBIL ? Sybil Ludington is coming! On April 30 we'll again have a chance to gallop 31.07 miles 'round her scenic route. I've run every one of the last four years and the number of starters has never exceeded last year's level of about 40. To quote Nick Marshall in the current issue of RRCA's Footnotes, "Who's Afraid of a Big, Bad, Ultra?" Well, practically every one it seems, that's who. How to get over that fear, that's t h e q u e s t i o n . Nick assures us that since the completion rate -the ratio of finishers to starters- is high for ultras they really can't be as tough as most people think. "Don't worry," he says, "the completion rate for the most popular three ultra's in 1982 averaged 85.1 per cent." Sounds high alright. But on con sulting my N.Y. Running News I see that in the biggest marathon in the country, in New York City, with a high proportion of first-timers, the percentage of starters finishing the course was quite a bit higher, 95.3 per cent. Nice try, Nick! Per haps the completion rates don't provide the assurance sought by the first-time ultra runner. After all you might think (cont'd pg. 7) St. PATRICKS Well, if Pat O'Brien can play Knute Rockne, there is nothing to stop Bob Vogel from winning a St. Patrick's Day Road R a c e ( l O K ) . H e d i d ! I n a very impressive way too as you will note from the results. N.Y.C was not alone in the problem department. We came up with two non- committments from two Irish pubs and fraternal organizations. Our pipe and drum complement fell through when they found a paying job and, despite Dan Kehoe's promise, we were unable to borrow the $18 million horse for pa cing purposes. Geoff Harrington, wear ing Union Jack shorts and Wendy Shile, from Surrey, w o n t h e M a s t e r s ' c r o w n s . But Bob Rogan and Ken Shannahan came through for the green. Not to be outdone, Grace Tagliamonte and Diane Cappellini, up held the good name of Christopher Columbus. I suppose we should credit Joe Albanese; but he is under the gun for shadowing and outkicking Bob Rogan in the stretch. Dan Caffrey thought this so appalling he considered refusing him M'' c* sn bagel. (cont'd on pg. 12)

S y b i l , c o n t i n u e d .

that the high percentage of runners completing ultras reflects not the degree ofdifficulty so much as the h^avy experience, not to say, age and the general daftness of the handful who try such events.

Actually I think most ultra runners run all distances and are only unusual inhaving d iscovered the spec ia l sat is fact ions of u l t ra events .

There is a satisfaction to be got from going further but the chief attraction ofthe ultra lies in the different kind of challenge it represents. It requires adiffereent approach to shorter races, including the marathon.

T h e m a i n t h i n g i s t h a t t h e u l t r a i s m u c h s l o w e r .Ultras are endurance tests, rather than speed tests. It is significant that the

U.S.A. s fastest man at 10,000 metres on the track, and the second fastest at5,000 metres, Alberto Salazar, is also the world record holder for the marathon. The marathon is a speed contest. Salazar's pace in his world record marcthon was4:54 per mile -only 10 per cent slower than the pace of his American record 10,000metres on the track. Even at much lower levels of ability one finds the same 10per cent difference between one person's best lOK and marathon pace. That's whythat marathon is a very demanding race. To run to your potential you must maintain a pace only 10 per cent slower than your best lOK time over four times thedistance. For most of us this is very hard since it means going uncomfortablyfast from the start and trying to hold that pace.

That's why you should consider the ultra. Even the very best ultra men go muchslower than the best marathoners. The World and U.S. best for 50 miles on theroads is Barney Klecker's 4:51:25. That's a mile pace of 5:50, a pace 19 per centslower than Salazar's record marathon pace. At distances beyond the marathon theaverage pace falls off sharply. Its hardly surpirsing really since the body canonly store a strictly finite quantity of readily-convertible energy and there arepractical limitations to the number of training miles.

The ultra runner learns to maintain his effort over great distances (and time)by carefully husbanding his strength and going slower.

There are several techniques for doing this according to the gurus of ultrarunning. It is most comforting to know that walking -at planned intervals- isconsidered perfectly okay -in fact is recommended for all but the elite class atd is tances beyond lOOK.

You may have noticed that in this discussion I've mentioned the ultra mainly interms of 50 miles and up. Fifty miles races are easily the most popular ultras. The 50K is comparatively rare. We are lucky to have one of the best ( a Met TAGChampionship) in our own back yard. Don't think that because Sybil is 31,1 milesit isn't a real ultra. This is the course of which U.S.A.'s 24 hour recordholder,Cahit Yeter, said "I've run races in 22 countries and this is the most difficultc o u r s e I ' v e e v e r r u n . "

Running Sybil is a matter of control rather than speed. That makes it different-not tougher- than shorter races. Flan your pace conservatively. You might eventry Walt Stack s approach: start slow and taper off. Or try a pace 19 percentslower than your marathon standard. Start at a comfortable pace and continue thatway. This an event to savor. No hassle and crush at the start . You won't haveto tear along worrying about every second or every pitstop. After all, short stopswill help conserve your energy. And you will coast through some pretty scenery asthe countryside commences its Spring flourishes. Moving smoothly you listen toyour body. You plan your effort. At the marathon point you're still in controland feeling strong. Now for a final push on the last mostly downhill 4.9 miles.

of Sybil? No way. Control your pace and cruise to a happy first ultra.

TRACK ETIQUETTE

The following pointers are reprinted from the Clifton Track ClubJanuary, 1983 issue of their Newsletter. As many of you are eitherbeginning track work outs for the first time or starting your annualSpring interval training after a winter lay off, the following guidelines,if followed will ma'-.e your training safer and more enjoyable as i^"doing intervals can be called enjoyable under the best conditions.1. When there are many persons running on a track at the same time but overdifferent distances and at different paces, things can get crowded. Toavoid congestion, the universal custom among track runners is to allow thepersons actually working out to use the inside lanes. Jogging and walkingshould be done to the outside, away from the curb at least two or threelanes. NO WALKING IN THE INSIDE LANES.

2. Faster runners overtaking slower runners (or runners who are forgetfully walking in the inside lanes) use the word "TRACK!" to indicate thata faster runner is approaching from behind. Track etiquette demands thata walking or jogging runner in the inside two lanes get out of the way immediately by either stepping off the track to the inside or by moving outto lane three. If you are actually running fast (for you) and faster runners approach from the rear and call "TRACK", the polite thing to do isstep off or move—but not to interfere with your own workout.

Sometimes a small knot of runners moving at a 6:00/mile pace will beovertaken by faster runners running 4A0s (h mile). The slower runnersshould not continue to block the entire track; but need not give the entiretrack in the middle of a part of their workout. Especially in the straightaways, the polite thing to do is move out onto the line between lanes 1and 2 and allow the faster runners to slip through on the inside.3. The shortest way around the track is to the inside. One lap arounda 440 yard track in lane 2 takes 8 more yards than lane 1. If you are rurunning a series of repeats or laps with others, take turns using thei n s i d e l a n e .

4. When you end a repeated distance you are tired; but remember that otherrunners may be coming up right behind you. As you reach your finish pointlook back and then move out to lane 3 to walk, jog and recover.5. Avoid accidents. Always look for runner traffic before you cross thet r a c k .
