For a decade prior to joining the Pirates organization, he served as a Triple-A umpire evaluator for Major League Baseball. Away from the game, he has been an administrator for the Union County School District in North Carolina since 1999. Robinson’s previous professional experience came when he served as pitching coach for the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Expos in 1998 under manager Frank Kremblas, who is the Pirates’ Triple-A manager at Indianapolis. From 1991-97, Rob- inson worked as a scout for the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners and Philadel- phia Phillies. Robinson enjoyed a very successful 10-year career as the head baseball coach at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte (now known as Charlotte) from 1 982-91, where his teams compiled a record of 280-244-3. His 49ers teams won 30 or more games ve times and he was the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 1984. He was also responsible for 34 of his players signing professional baseball contracts. Prior to his head coaching stint at UNC-Charlotte, Robinson worked for three sea- sons as a minor league umpire in the Midwest and Southern Leagues, and broke into the coaching ranks as a college assistant at Appalachian State (1975-77) and the University of Tennessee (1978-79). The Concord, NC native played college baseball at Gardner-Webb College (now Gardner-Webb Universit y) and was a First-Team All-American in 1975, with his .466 batting average in 1974 still standing as a school record. Robinson was inducted into the Gardner-Webb Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. Robinson earned a bachelor’s degree from Gardner-Webb and a master’s degree from Appalachian State. Currently residing in Concord, NC, Robinson has two chil- dren, daughter Kristen (28) and son Michael (25).

Gary Robinson became the fourth manager in Spikes history on December 19, 2008.“G-Rob” has a diverse background in the game of baseball as a player, coach, scoutand umpire. Brandon Moore begins his tenth season as a minor league coach and his fourthin the Pirates system in 2010 as he returns to State College. The native Ala-baman oversaw a Spikes’ offense that put up 339 runs last season, good forthird-best in the New York-Penn League.

Prior to joining the Spikes coaching staff, Moore served as hitting coach for theAltoona Curve for three seasons from 2006 to 2008. “B-Mo” rst joined the Pi-

rates minor league system in 2005 as the hitting coach at Advanced-A Lynch-burg after serving as a coach in the Chicago White Sox chain from 2001-04.

Moore played seven seasons in the White Sox organization from 1994-2000,reaching the Triple-A level in both 1999 and 2000. An All-SEC shortstop atAuburn University, Moore was originally drafted by Chicago in the 17th round ofthe 1994 June Draft.

Moore was born August 23, 1973 in Birmingham, AL, and currently resides inAltoona, AL with wife Kerri and sons Brody (10) and Braden (7).

Mike Steele enters his second season with the State College Spikes, and his as apitching coach in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Steele was a key factor in theimprovement of the Spikes pitching staff in 2009, which posted the fth-best earnedrun average in the New York-Penn League a year after coming in last. The Spikesalso walked the second-fewest batters in the league under Steele’s watch last year.

Prior to joining the Spikes, Steele spent the 2008 campaign with Advanced-A Lynch-burg. Steele replaced Bob Milacki as Hillcats’ pitching coach last year at mid-seasonafter spending the previous two years as the pitching coach at Michigan State Uni-versity.

After being drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 29th round of the 2000 June Draft,Steele pitched professionally from 2000-2005 in the Detroit and Seattle organiza-tions. Stele is an alum of the New York-Penn League, where he earned his rst all-star recognition with Oneonta. In 2001 with West Michigan of the Class A MidwestLeague, Steele was a First-Team All-Class A relief pitcher after going 4-3 with a 1.16ERA and 19 saves.

Steele graduated from Central Michigan in 2000 with a degree in sports manage-ment and a minor in business administration. Born August 22, 1978 in Mount Pleas-ant, MI, Steele now resides in Spring, TX with wife Lydia and their two children.

Mike Zalno returns for his fourth season as the Spikes head athletic trainer andhis eighth in the Pirates organization in 2010. Zalno comes off of a 2009 seasonin which he was named the New York-Penn League’s Trainer of the Year by theProfessional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society.

Prior to joining the Spikes in 2007, the 33-year old native of Cleareld servedas the trainer for Pirate afliates in Hickory (2006), Williamsport (2005) and

Bradenton (2003-04). Mike makes his off-season home in State College with hiswife Heather.

James Staffaroni is in his rst season in the Pirates system as a Strength andConditioning Coach. The 24-year-old is a 2009 graduate of Penn State, wherehe earned his degree in Kinesiology. Before joining the Spikes, Staffaroni wasan assistant strength coach at PSU, and has worked at recreational and athleticfacilities across the campus. In addition to his strength coach duties, Jamesserved as a supervisor at the university’s outdoor adventure recreation facilities.Originally from Factoryville, PA (near Scranton), he now resides in State Col-lege. James’s hobbies include hiking, kayaking, shing and camping, along withmany other outdoor activities.
