GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

Most scholarships are based on grades and/or financial need. All scholarship applicants must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When several applicants meet the stated criteria, financial need will be considered. Students who receive scholarships are expected to remain in 15 hours each semester, unless otherwise noted. Students must remain in good standing in terms of conduct and citizenship as determined by the college. They must also pay on schedule debts of any kind owed to the college. Shawnee Community College (SCC) reserves the right to alter or cancel individual scholarships at any time for failure to meet the requirements. When one of the stated standards is not met, the student will lose the scholarship. Once a student has lost an SCC scholarship for any reason, it cannot be resumed at a later date unless extenuating circumstances can be proven. The student is responsible for making sure all requirements are met. Once selected, the scholarship recipient must designate in writing to accept or decline the scholarship (an award letter will be sent). To receive a Shawnee College scholarship, students must accept their award letter by the declaration deadline of June 30

th. Once the recipient

declines the scholarship, it may no longer be available.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

WHAT IS FINANCIAL AID? Financial Aid (FA) is any scholarship, grant, loan, or work program that helps to pay for your college education. FA is intended to assist, not replace, a family’s resources. Families should be considered the primary source for funding a college education. FA might not pay for all of your expenses, but it can help.

HOW DOES FINANCIAL AID WORK? Financial Aid is based on family need. Financial need is the difference between the cost of attending SCC for one year and the amount your family can be expected to pay. For FA purposes, your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is based on the information you submit on the FAFSA.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID?

The first step is to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). With this form,

students automatically apply for a Pell Grant, FSEOG, Work-Study, and MAP (Illinois residents). The FAFSA must be filled out each academic year. It is available in high school counselors’ offices, in the SCC FA Office, and at FAFSA on the Web (http://www.fafsa.gov). To complete the FAFSA online, computers are available in the computer labs on the main campus, at the extension centers, and in the library. It is even quicker if you bring your tax information into the Shawnee College Financial Aid Office and let a staff member put it online for you.

WHEN DO I APPLY? You should apply for FA for the fall semester as soon as your income taxes are filled out for the previous year.

FOR EXAMPLE: If you apply for FA for the Fall 2014 semester, you may fill out the FAFSA (paper or online) any time after January 1, 2014. You do not have to mail in your taxes first, as long as you have them prepared before filling out the FAFSA.

However, if your family is NOT required to file income taxes, you may fill out the FAFSA any time after January 1.

WHAT IS SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC

PROGRESS?

Students must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward a degree to keep federal or state FA. The SAP Policy is available in the college catalog.

WHAT DATES ARE CRITICAL?

Meeting the following dates should allow processing time to receive funds and meet SCC’s billing and other deadlines.

FAFSA March 1 Complete and mail the FAFSA by this date for priority consideration. It is strongly recommended that students complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1. This will help assure that it is on file by scholarship deadline dates.

Monetary Award Program Deadline Varies The state-established priority deadline for new and continuing State of Illinois MAP applicants has been moved to as early as March 1

st. These dates refer to the last day

the state can receive your FAFSA results. You should submit your FAFSA at least 2 to 3 weeks prior to this date. NOTE: These dates can change without notice.

Scholarships February 1 The Scholarship Application, additional information, and portfolios should be turned in by this date. Exceptions are noted in this booklet.

I SUBMITTED MY FAFSA, WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

One to two weeks after submitting your FAFSA, you will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR informs you of Federal Pell Grant eligibility.

Page 5: 2014 2015 Scholarship Booklet

4 SHAWNEE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Review the SAR carefully for any missing information or errors. If you find any errors, bring your SAR into the FA Office and we will make the corrections for you.

WHAT TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID

ARE AVAILABLE?

Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are the most attractive sources of student FA since they do not have to be repaid.

Scholarships Scholarships are awarded based on the following: Financial need Academic achievement Artistic ability Athletic ability College major Community activities Special interest Military commitment If interested in athletic scholarships, students may call (618) 634-3200 and ask for contact information for the Athletic Director. Students who received a tuition waiver from SCC through the Advanced Honor’s Program during high school could be eligible for the Advanced Honor’s Scholarship upon graduation. To receive this scholarship, students must have earned 15 credit hours before graduating high school and have a 3.00 cumulative GPA at SCC. To keep this scholarship for the second year, students must maintain a 3.00 cumulative GPA and provide SCC with 8 hours of service per semester (fall and spring). This scholarship includes in-district tuition, waived fees, and a book loan. Current students (after high school graduation) can run for student government positions through the Student Senate. Student Senate members receive half scholarships, which cover half of in-district tuition charges and a book loan (see below for details). If elected to the Student Trustee position, the recipient receives a full scholarship, which covers the full amount of in-district tuition charges and a book loan (see below for details). For scholarships that include a book loan, the SCC Bookstore will charge a $100 scholarship book deposit when scholarship students pick up their textbooks. The deposit must be cash, check, or credit card. Financial aid may not be applied for the deposit. The deposit will be refunded when all scholarship books/telecourse DVDs are returned in good condition at the end of the semester during buybacks. Consumables (e.g. lab books, workbooks, telecourse packets, online access cards, etc.) must be purchased by the student. Books MUST be returned at the end of each semester or grades will be held.

Federal Pell Grant The Pell Grant is the basis for all Federal FA and is given to students who have financial need and meet federal eligibility requirements. Pell Grants may range from $574 to

$5645 per year (these numbers may change slightly each year). Pell Grants are based upon the number of eligible credit hours a student is enrolled in on Pell Status Day. This is after mid-term of each semester. Half of the annual Pell amount will be paid in the fall semester and the other half will be paid in the spring semester. The federal school code for Shawnee Community College is 007693.

NOTE: Courses repeated after a student has received a grade of A, B, C, or D will not be counted in determining the amount of federally-funded or state-funded financial aid, including the federal Pell grant and the state Monetary Award Program (MAP) grant, unless certain conditions exist. See the college catalog for details regarding repeating courses.

Classes dropped after tenth day count as attempted

hours, but not successfully completed hours. To remain eligible for a Pell grant, students must successfully complete 67% of the hours attempted. See the college catalog for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements.

Federal Supplemental Educational

Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) FSEOGs are awarded to students who have the greatest financial need. Amounts vary based on annual funding levels.

Monetary Award Program (MAP) The Monetary Award Program (MAP) grant is a state-funded grant that is awarded to eligible students. It is based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is determined by the information reported on the FAFSA. Students (parents, if dependent) must also be Illinois residents and enrolled in at least three credit hours. The MAP grant will only pay a portion of the tuition at the SCC in-district rate.

Federal and Institutional Work-Study The Work-Study program gives students an opportunity to earn money while gaining valuable work experience. Many jobs are available through the Work-Study program. Students can work up to 20 hours per week with the convenience of supervisors working around their course schedules. Shawnee College maintains a listing of both on- and off-campus work and community service jobs through Work-Study. Open jobs are posted on the main campus (across the hall from the Bursar’s Office), at the extension centers, and online at http://www.shawneecc.edu under “Employment.”

HOW CAN I FIND OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS?

For access to thousands of scholarships, go to http://www.fastweb.com. Fill out a questionnaire online and they will match you with scholarships for which you qualify. Students should check with their high school counselor and with civic clubs or organizations in their hometowns to see if other scholarships are available.

SAMPLE AWARD LETTER

Listed below is a SAMPLE award letter that previous SCC students have received. This is an EXAMPLE and does not mean you will be eligible for the awards listed.

Student Aid Award Letter - Initial 2014-2015

Printed Date: 3/25/2014 Jane Doe ID#: 123456 123 State Street Anywhere, IL 12345

After a review of your financial aid application, the Shawnee Community College Student Financial Aid Office has determined that you may be eligible to receive the following aid to help you meet your education expenses for the 2014-2015 academic year. Please accept or decline and sign at the bottom and return this Award Letter by the above date. If you receive any additional earnings from any source, this package will be adjusted. Contact the Student Financial Aid Office concerning any adjustments which you are aware should be made. Failure to return a siqned copy of this Student Aid Award letter by the above date may result in the cancellation of all aid. Aid is valid only upon enrollment. This award rescinds all previous award letters.

* Est indicates estimated award - amount subject to change

Fall and Spring Award amounts for the Pell Grant and MAP Grant are based on an enrollment of 12 hours and will be adjusted based on actual enrollment as of Pell Status Day (as listed in the college catalog). If you attend less than full-time (take fewer than 12 eligible credit hours per semester), you may not be eligible for a Pell Grant—depending on your EFC (Expected Family Contribution). Awards amounts for the Summer Pell Grant are based on an enrollment of 6 hours and will be adjusted based on actual enrollment as of Pell Status Day (as listed in the college catalog). If you attend less than 6 hours, you may not be eligible for a Pell Grant—depending on your EFC (Expected Family Contribution). Also, keep in mind that Pell will not pay for repeated classes unless you earned an F in it AND this is the first time you have repeated the course. You must be enrolled in Pell-eligible courses (courses that go toward a regular degree or certificate).

All charges will be applied to your account and the balance (if any) will be mailed on the date listed in the college catalog. Please make sure your address is correct in our system. You will receive a statement upon enrollment detailing your charges for the semester and you should pay the difference (or make payment arrangements) by the payment date on the bottom of your statement, unless you receive an award letter showing enough financial aid to cover your tuition, fees, and book charges for the semester. If you completely withdraw (or stop attending all classes) prior to the 60% point of the term, you may be required to return a portion of the Pell or SEOG grants to the federal government. In addition, you CANNOT RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID FROM ANY OTHER COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY for the same term for which you receive financial aid at Shawnee Community College. Please note that if you are enrolled in Truck Driving or Cosmetology and your start date is different than the beginning of the normal semester, your money will be applied later. By applying for financial aid and agreeing to share that information with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), you have been considered for the State of Illinois (IL) Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant. If you were determined to meet the eligibility criteria for the MAP grant, an award is included on the Award Letter. This award may be an estimate made by the financial aid office and, if so, is identified as a “State of ILMAP Grant (Est)”. MAP grants are limited based on the number of applicants and funding levels appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly. Please be aware that in light of state funding constraints, reductions to estimated or actual MAP grants are possible.

Please indicate acceptance of the above financial aid package:

__________ I Accept the entire financial aid package as offered.

__________ I Decline the following:

I understand that I must show satisfactory academic progress required (see college catalog-SCC assumes you are or will be familiar with its content) and perform in a satisfactory manner if paid work study and comply with all student loan promissory notes and agreements. Awards are subject to adequate funding and to the verification of your financial assistance form information.
