Fundamentals Of The FaithPneumatology—The Person And Work Of The Holy Spirit–Part I

Raymond Pruitt

Pneumatology is a term derived from two Greek words: pfleuma, "spirit", and logcs, "thought, expressionword". It is, then, the teaching of the Word concerning the Holy Spirit, who is the third Person of the Godhead. The Old Testament Hebrew word for spirit is ruach.

The Authorized Version translates the original hagios pneuma as "Holy Ghost" in some passages and as "HolySpirit" in others. Both are translated from the very same words. The English language has undergone changessince the AV translation in 1611, so that some terms and expressions which were correct then sound. archaictoday. In popular language "spirit" is more meaningful than "ghost"; however, in religious language theinfluence of the Authorized Version continues to preserve the use of "Holy Ghost". Both designations areproper and correct, and we use them interchangeably.

In this section of theology, we are concerned with the person and character of the Holy Spirit, the baptism of theHoly Spirit, the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit, and what it means to live in the Spirit.

In recent years there has been a great upsurge of interest in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, His gifts andministries, including the speaking with tongues (glossolalia). That this is the age of the Spirit is recognized morewidely than ever before by the Christian world. In the first part of this century Pentecostals were the objects ofderision by most other religious bodies, but now in practically every Christian body there is a significant numberof its members who testify to being filled with the Spirit and who speak with tongues as the Spirit gives theutterance.

The reader is referred to the discussion of the deity of the Holy Spirit in Chapter Ten, which should be studied inconnection with this chapter. It should be clear that one Old Testament emphasis was upon the unity of Godwith little recognition of the Three Persons; whereas, the New Testament focus is mainly on the nature and workof the Three Persons with little specific mention of their unity. Having already discussed the nature and work ofthe Father and the Son, we concentrate now on the Spirit.

The Scriptural Definitions and Designations of the Holy Spirit1. His name. He is very God, the Third Person of the Godhead. He is called the Spirit because He is pure spiritin which there is no place for anything material; He is designated as Holy because He is absolutely holy Himselfand produces holiness in others; He is called the Spirit of God because He is included in the Godhead; He isalso called the Spirit of Christ because He proceeds eternally from the Father and from the Son, and He makesChrist real in the hearts and lives of all believers.

2. His designations. The Holy Spirit is referred to throughout the Old Testament, even though there is littledirect emphasis given to the Trinitarian expression of God. But it is when we come to the New Testamentfollowing the resurrection and ascension of Christ that His nature and work is given particular attention. He waswith righteous men all the time, but after Pentecost, He took up His abode within all who would receive Him(John 14:17; cf. Acts 2:4; 1 John 2:27; 2 John 2).

Of the many titles given to Him, Walvood notes:Sixteen reveal His relationship to the other Persons of the Trinity. Eleven titles are found relating the Holy Spirit to the Father: (1) Spirit of God (Gen. 1:2; Mt. 3:16); (2)Spirit of the Lord (Lk 4:18); (3) Spirit of Our God (1 Cor. 6:11); (4) His Spirit (Num. 11:29);

(5) Spirit of Jehovah (Jud. 3:10); (6) Thy Spirit (Psa. 139:7); (7) Spirit of the Lord God (Isa. 61:1); (8) Spirit of your Father (Mt. 10:20); (9) Spirit of the living God (2 Cor. 3:3); (10) My Spirit (Gen. 6:3); (11) Spirit of Him (Rom. 8:11). Five titles are found relating the Holy Spirit to the Son: (1) Spirit of Christ (Rom. 8:9; 1 Pet. 1:11); (2) Spirit of JesusChrist (Phil. 1:19); (3) Spirit of Jesus (Acts 16:7, Revised Version); (4) Spirit of His Son (Gal. 4:6); (5) Spirit of the Lord (Acts 5:9; 8:39). While there is some distinction in meaning in the various titles, the chief significance is to bring out the relationship of the Holy Spirit as

the Third Person of the Trinity, all affirming His deity and procession.'

3. His personality. The Holy Spirit is not an "it". He is a Person. Because of His spiritual essence, some havedifficulty in perceiving His personality. The visible creative works of God the Father, makes His personalitymore readily conceived. The incarnation of God the Son stresses His personality so much that comprehending itis inescapable. But the activity of the Holy Spirit is so thoroughly spiritual and mystical that the tendency is tothink of Him as an influence, a power, a manifestation, or an agent rather than a Person.

Because He is sometimes referred to as breath, wind, and power, and symbols used in speaking of Himare oil, fire, water, wind, dove, etc. (see Gen. 2:7; Job 33:4, 14; Acts 2:24; 1:8; Zech. 4:12; Matt. 3:16; John3:5-8; 20:22; 1 John 2:20), it is not surprising that some Bible readers tend to think of the Holy Spirit as animpersonal influence which emanates from God the Father. However, this is a distortion of His nature, havingno basis in Scripture. On the contrary, His personality is explicitly confirmed in the Scriptures: (1) The sameScriptures which ascribe distinct personality to the Father and the Son, with equal clarity ascribe distinctpersonality to the Holy Ghost (Matt. 3:16, 17; 28:19; John 14:16, 17; 15:26). (2) The pronouns which refer tothe Holy Spirit are without exception personal pronouns (John 16:13, 14; Acts 13:2). (3) The qualities ofpersonality, self-consciousness, and freedom are unsparingly attributed to Him (1 Cor. 2:10; 12:11). (4) Therelations between the Holy Spirit and man emphasize His personality: He strives with man (Gen. 6:3); Heinstructs, regenerates, sanctifies, and comforts (John 16:13, 14; 3:5; 14:16; 1 Pet. 1:2); men are warned not to"sin against", "to resist", "to grieve", "to quench" the Holy Spirit (Matt. 12:31, 32; Acts 7:51; 4:30; 1 Thess.5:19).

4. His characteristics. Many of the titles of the HolySpirit reveal the divine attributes of His Person: (1)unity, One Spirit (Eph. 4:4); (2) perfection, SevenSpirits (Rev. 1:4; 3:1); (3) identity and essence, theLord the Spirit (2 Cor. 3:18); (4) eternity, Eternal Spirit(Heb. 9:14); (5) glory equal to the Father and the Son,Spirit of Glory (1 Pet. 4:14); (6) eternal life, Spirit ofLife (Rom. 8:2); (7) holiness, Holy Spirit or HolyGhost (Psa. 51:11; Matt. 1:20; Luke 11:13), Holy one(1 John 220); (8) author of revelation and wisdom,Spirit of Wisdom (Ex. 28:3; Eph. 1:17), Spirit ofWisdom and Understanding (Isa. 11:2), Spirit ofCounsel and Might (Isa. 11:2), Spirit of Knowledge andof the Fear of the Lord (Isa. 11:2), Spirit of Truth (John14:17); (9) transcendence, Free Spirit (Psa. 51:12); (10)grace, Spirit of Grace (Heb. 10:29), and Spirit of Graceand Supplication (Zech.12: 10)

Tips For Abundant LifeCarolyn Guyton

Criticism. This is a word that tends to take

on a negative connotation for most of us.

However, I would like to propose that we

have the choice to bring about a positive

response instead. It is inevitable that we

will all encounter criticism from time to

time. I would like to share some tips for

using criticism for your benefit, based upon

a podcast I heard recently.

React with maturity. Rather than taking it

personally and becoming defensive, if we

choose to take a step back and think it

through before reacting, we can make this a

positive situation. Listen to what the person

is sharing and confirm that you understand

what is being said. This is often all the

person wants – to know they are being

heard.

Assess the source. Recognize who is

sharing this information with you. Is it

someone you don’t know personally,

possibly a member of a larger group who

seems to always find the negative in a

situation? Is it a well-meaning and

respected person who just happens to

disagree with you on this matter? Or, is it a

close friend? Be sure to identify which type

person is offering this feedback and respond

appropriately. The first may not even

warrant a direct response. You could truly

benefit, however, from listening carefully to

the second. We can always learn by

viewing a situation from a perspective

different from our own. The third example,

our close friend, should be thanked for their

input and encouraged to be open in the

future, as well.

Evaluate the input. Take the time to

examine the criticism you were given. Do

you agree with what was said? If not, can

you at least understand why the other

person would see it the way they do? How

can you portray your acceptance of the

information and truly own it? What lesson

can you learn overall?

It is vital that we take every opportunity for

personal growth. The appropriate handling

of criticism allows us to grow and also

provides an example to others.

Seek every day for the abundant life that

only comes from God.
