Recycle Christmas treesJan. 2–3SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

KidSport and the City of Port Alberni’s parks and rec department are teaming up to offer a Christmas tree chipping service again this season.

“We’re encouraging people to drop their trees off and support KidSport,” says KidSport spokesperson Ron Doetzel.

“It saves them from having their tree sit in the backyard after Christmas.

“The trees will be chipped up by the parks department and will go into the parks composting program, primarily used for park landscaping,” Doetzel said.

The tree recycling depot will be set up on Saturday, Jan. 2 and Sunday, Jan. 3 in the northwest parking lot at the AV Multiplex (on the Bob Dailey Stadium side) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for people to drop off their trees. Port Alberni firefighters will be there to you help your unload tree and throw it onto the pile, for a donation to KidSport.

Last year 200 trees were collected, and Doetzel would like to see more this year. “I thought it was a good start,” he said.

Getting educated on a tree farmKATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

It’s been a busy season for the Alberni District Secondary Christmas tree farm.

“It’s been really good—good Christmas tree season, good educational season with the kids, they’re learning all sorts of stuff,” said ADSS project based learning forestry teacher Ryan Dvorak.

This is the third year the ADSS kids have sold Christmas trees at the farm, which was originally built by Shawn Flynn and Dave McBride—who made up Greenmax—in 1997.

“We cleared the land, planted the trees and started the farm,” said Flynn. Last year, Flynn sold the farm and now helps the school with the project based learning class.

“It gives them their first chance to get exposed to real work and to do the things that you can actually get paid for. And it’s volume—they go through 1,000 trees a season.”

Dvorak agrees.“This is our Project Based

Learning program and our forestry program so this is a good opportunity to get the students out and show them what actual work is and what business is,” said Dvorak.

“The fact that the school district owns it provides an extra level of impetus in terms of understanding how to go from a seedling to this,” he added, gesturing around the eight-hectare farm.

“They look at profit, expenses, the whole business behind it.”

It also provides a different way to learn. Students in Grades 9–10 are involved in the project based learning program. The students are out on the farm for two days a week per program.

“We’ve got a Grade 9 program, which is an academic-based program for outdoor learning. That program has 24 students that look at math, English, science and social studies,” said Dvorak.

“But this is their classroom for half the year—out here on our Christmas tree farm and on the woodlot.”

The Grade 10s take that one step further. “It’s looking at connecting students with an idea of

where they might want their future to go in terms of trades or post-secondary opportunities around schooling,” said Dvorak.

“Specifically, it looks at the business behind how this runs—digging really deep into the idea of what running a business

takes, a little bit about entrepreneurship, trades associated with working in natural resource management.”

The end result is to leave the students with an education that looks at both theory and practice.

“The purpose of the program is to make the theory real. Here’s how you calculate the volume of a cylinder and now we’re actually going to go scale

the log—and that’s a job you can get paid for.”

With a mix of practical experience, the program gives kids interested in all sorts of different career fields ideas for their futures.

Jimmy Hassle has already gotten a head start on a career in natural resources.

“I do heli-logging and shake blocking on the weekends and firewood in between,” said the Grade 10 student. This is just another opportunity for Hassle to get out of the classroom and apply the skills he’s learning.

“You value the skills a lot more than being at a desk all day,” he said.

But even students who aren’t looking at a career in forestry are inspired by the program.

Elyse Warm joined for the opportunity to explore

a subject she otherwise wouldn’t have—and to pick up some tips.

“My passion is teaching,” Warm said. “It shows me a different way to teach—makes it a lot easier and nicer to learn.”

With an ever changing education system, she sees taking a new type of class as getting in on the ground floor. “This is starting to develop but there might be more opportunities to teach like this.”

The Christmas tree farm acts a source of revenue for the school as well.

All of the proceeds go back to ADSS and last year, the girls’ rugby team toured Ireland as a result.

“We have a partnership with the ADSS rugby club—they take over the u-cut part of the operations and this crew deals with the wholesale application.”

ord Johns has at least one thing in common with Dr. Frasier Crane.

Crane, portrayed by Kelsey Grammer

on the Cheers spinoff Frasier, would often say, “I’m listening” to callers on his open-line radio show.

In a welcome change from Conservative MPs allowed to truly listen only to their leader, rookie NDP MP Johns is on his third swing through the sprawling Courtenay-Alberni riding since the Oct. 19 federal election.

In a whirlwind series of gatherings with constituents in the Alberni Valley, Comox Valley, Parksville and elsewhere, Johns must feel like he’s still campaigning.

With one crucial difference. Then, he wanted something from

constituents – votes. Now, as an elected MP, Johns wants to know what they want from him.

“I’ve met with every mayor in the riding…I’ve met with almost every (First Nations) chief in the riding, I’ve met with the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council, I’ve

done meet-and-greets in all sections of the riding, and I’ve been to Ottawa three times,” Johns says in an interview.

Generally, he says, people are excited about change and an optimistic, hopeful message emanating from Ottawa.

Johns says his “ground-up

approach…to community economic development, to community politics and to community building” is going over well.

“I’m taking that approach to Ottawa instead of Ottawa coming to communities telling communities how they’re going to deliver (programs).”

Again, a significant departure from the one-man government of the Harper years.

Johns did a risk assessment of each community to help him identify priorities.

His list of Alberni Valley positives includes “people power,” infrastructure, affordability, resilience and potential such as a trans-shipment hub and The Coulson Group’s aeronautics.

“The downside of Port Alberni is it’s kind of bottom of the barrel in socio-economic indicators in B.C.” The relatively new Port Alberni resident notes that one-third of children in the city live in poverty.

To Comment

Hearing that the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District has cancelled its contract with the Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association to run Thunder in the Valley at the regional airport should come as no surprise.

Construction for the runway expansion project is slated to last until late August or early September, which means there would be no way the early August drag racing event could occur for 2016.

What has come as a surprise, though, is the possible location that the City of Port Alberni has suggested as a replacement for the event: Stamp Avenue, between Redford and Roger streets.

At first glance, the location seems an impossibility for running such a large event as Thunder in the Valley. The logistics for safety, crowd and traffic control seem impossible.

However, the willingness of the city, the AVDRA and Alberni Valley businesses to ensure that Thunder in the Valley is able to run in 2016 is heartening.

Thunder in the Valley is a huge economic boon to Port Alberni and losing it—even for one year, due to airport construction—could put it in jeopardy. Our hats are off to the city for coming up with this alternative.

•••

Further to our position on the assessment error to the seniors’ cottages adjacent to Pioneer Towers, it was brought to our attention that the error was on the part of BC Assessment, which failed to remove the statutory exemption classification, and not the City of Port Alberni, as we previously stated.

Our clarification notwithstanding, we still feel seniors living in the cottages should not have to absorb the extra tax bill all at once, and feel other levels of government should come to their aid.

— ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

People are excited about change and an optimistic, hopeful message emanating from Ottawa.

WHAT’S ONNew approachFrom / A5

This number is far above B.C. and national averages.

Johns indicates his success so far has been due to his ability to network, being a visionary and bringing people together.

He plans to continue this approach as an MP.

Although NDP leader Tom Mulcair recognized Johns’ background by naming him the party’s critic for small business and tourism, the new MP stresses that his top objective is representing his riding.

Another high

priority since finally getting an office and staff in Ottawa in December is hiring staff and establishing a presence in the riding.

Johns’ enterprising small-business background, his concern for the environment and his strong familiarity with much of the new riding make him an ideal candidate to represent the people of Courtenay-Alberni.

His willingness to listen is another invaluable asset.

The Alberni Valley Lions Club is celebrating 60 years of service in the Alberni Valley. Created on Septem-ber 24, 1955 by a group of men who wanted to volunteer their services to the betterment of the citizens of Port Alberni and its surrounding region, the club has grown over the years to include both men and women. What is the Lions Club and what do

we do? We are a service club with a motto “We Serve”. We volunteer our time and energy to assist our fellow citizens. We raise funds for our com-munity and we donate these funds to individuals and groups with need, for our second motto is “those with great-er need”. In our six decades we have contributed financial resources to the hospital for specialized equipment; joined in the development of the Mul-tiplex; provided charitable assistance to individuals with emergency needs; built or provided equipment for the de-velopment of Lions Roger Creek Park including the bridge; donated grants to Christmas Charities; sponsored bursaries for students at ADSS, VAST, North Island College and the Justice Institute Paramedic Program; hosted the Pancake Breakfast to kick-start Seniors Weeks; organized the Terry Fox Run; sponsored the annual youth Heritage Fair; financed and barbe-qued at the annual Seniors residen-tial care picnic; partnered with other groups to bring families the summer’s open-air Starlight Movie Night; and, given aid to groups to support those who are disadvantaged, such as: Kid Sport, Special Olympics, Food for

Learning, Coats for Kids, ‘Stock the Lockers’, School Bands & Sports pro-grams, Raise a Reader, Folkfest. Our involvement with Salmon Festival is well known, as we provide traffic con-trol for the fireworks and host the ever popular Bullhead Derby for children & their families. Our newest project involves bringing

a Vision Screener to the Valley. This instrument, the size of a camera, will allow us to assist families assess the vision needs of their children without cost. If vision therapy is needed, fam-ilies will be able to take the results to their optometrist. In time, other groups of citizens will benefit from SPOT screening. We, the Alberni Valley Lions, serve

proudly the community in which we live.Interested in becoming an active

member and volunteer on our team? Contact any Lion member or email

membership chair Rob at [email protected] to discuss your wishes. While we meet every second and fourth Tuesday for dinner at The Hospitality Inn from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm, atten-

dance is by invitation. Anyone inter-ested needs to know that there is an annual cost associated with member-ship. But, if you are still interested, give us a call.

COMING UP: First Shift a hockey first

for new group of players.SPORTSACRD cuts contract with Thunder in the ValleyCity hopes to pick up slack by holding drag racing event on Stamp Avenue

SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District has terminated its contract with Thunder in the Valley, which means the drag racing event will not be held at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport in 2016.

However, drag racers take heart: the City of Port Alberni is looking at closing Stamp Avenue for three days in August so the event can be moved into the heart of the city.

“The regional district, because

of the expansion at the airport, has terminated our contract with them,” Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association (AVDRA) president Bill Surry said.

“We would be right in the middle of our construction window and wouldn’t be able to accommodate their event on our site,” airport manager Mark Fortune said.

Thunder in the Valley always takes place the weekend after the BC Day long weekend in August; construction isn’t due to be complete on the runway expansion

until September.Surry is hopeful the

change of venue will only be for one year. The AVDRA will be allowed to re-apply

for a contract at the airport for 2017, he added.

In the meantime, there are plans afoot to move the event

to Stamp Avenue and change it to a 1/8th-mile drag strip. The street would be closed for three days from Redford to Roger

streets.“We think we can

pull it off and put on a good show there,” Surry said.

A lot of work still needs to be done, but Surry is glad the event won’t have to shut down completely. “The city figures it’s going to be a big boon to bring it into town.”

Stamp Avenue seemed to be the best location, both Mayor Mike Ruttan and Surry agreed.

“It has to be paved, it has to be flat, it has to be safe,” Ruttan said.

“We did look at other places in the

Valley” but there was nowhere else the city felt they could have ready in time for the August 2016 event.

Ruttan confirmed Catalyst Paper has been approached about perhaps some of the mill property for the event. “We have had some preliminary discussions with them, yes,” he said.

The drag racing association will meet in early January to talk logistics, and Surry said they will have their safety team from Vancouver come over to check it out.

Tragically, every year in BC countless dogs suffer and die after being thrown from the back of pickup trucks. Consequently, your pet should never ride unrestrained in the back or body of any vehicle.

There are three simple options:

1. Put the dog in the vehicle with you. Use a crate or dog seatbelt as a restraint, or2. Secure your dog in a kennel fastened to the centre of the truck, or3. Secure your dog with a harness and short-tether leash to ensure safety from strangulation and death.

Christmases past.SENIORSMemories of Christmases past kept aliveORLANDO DELANOSPECIAL TO THE NEWS

hroughout the years, the celebration of Christmas have changed, and so has our society too,

but there is no doubt that the spirit of this important time of the year remains strong.

Many older citizens who now live in the Alberni Valley reminisce on the days they lived on the farms in the Prairies, or fishing or mining on the west coast, or in small villages, where running water was not always available and electricity did not reach remote areas.

Families and neighbours would spend special events together, such as Christmas, with food that came from their own gardens and meat and milk from their farms; and where gifts and decorations were mostly homemade.

“My parents were farmers and worked the land in order to provide for the family. My father worked the fields with team of horses,” says Bertha Levesque, resident of Abbeyfield.

“My mother would grow a big garden each year and can some food items for the winter. As a young girl, we enjoyed the food my mother prepared on Christmas Day, especially the turkey. And, unlike the way it is today, all our presents were knitted or sewn in our house, such as mittens, socks, coats, etc. There was no money available to buy things.”

She adds that Christmas was a joyous occasion

in her household and a true family togetherness. They sang and laughed. But, unfortunately, Bertha’s father passed away, before reaching his 60th birthday.

“I loved Christmas, and I enjoyed it very much with mom and dad and my brothers and sisters, especially when I was very young,” says Pat Dearle, the youngest member of a large family, who was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. She has lived in Port Alberni for many decades but remembers her childhood fondly.

“We didn’t live on a farm, like many in those days. I used to get dolls that my mother would make for me. I loved it. On one Christmas Day,

I received the best present ever: a violin. This opened the doors for me to learn how to play music on an instrument I enjoyed so much. Once I learned how to play, I performed at different community events.”

Nelda Stainbrook moved to Canada at the age of two. Her family, originally from Ontario, had moved to Detroit, Michigan, and then back to Ontario and Alberta, where she and her siblings were raised. Her father was a carpenter.

“We enjoyed all the activities that took place in the Christmas season, from school concerts to the family gatherings and, not to forget our lovely mother’s cooking. And, although we

didn’t get many presents (we would be lucky if we got a pair of gloves or mittens, and occasionally a doll!), we all had a great time.

I want to wish my family and friends a Merry Christmas!”

Edith MacLean was born on Prince Edward Island, the second oldest of a family of six (three boys and three girls). “Our Christmases were always special celebrations in our household because it was an opportunity for a family reunion with a big dinner, a small Christmas tree and lots of fun,” she recalls.

“In those days, regardless of the celebration, we as young children, had to help with the farm

chores. We had to go to the barn and milk the cows and do the cleaning, even on Christmas Day! We also helped mother with the cooking.

“This Christmas celebration will remind me of days gone by when we played, sang and

enjoyed the festivities of such a special day in the year,” she said.

Terry Brown recalls that all her Christmases were happy times enjoyed by the family, mom, dad and a sister in Laforest, Ont. “We were lucky because my father, who was

a logger, always had a job, even on the suffering days of the depression.”

Every Christmas during her childhood Brown saw the family enjoying the lovely meals skilfully prepared by her mother. “In that area, Laforest, there were 12 families who lived relatively close to each other. At Christmas time we got together for a good social time. I had a pleasant childhood and Christmas was always so special for me.”

Orlando Delano writes the Valley Seniors feature.
