KRISTI DOBSONSPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Local residents are making sure senior citizens in the community are not left out of holiday giving this season.

In the spirit of Christmas, a hamper project is underway and has become a labour of love for two new friends. After Shari Fast saw how much help Michelle Gard provided to homeless resident Steve Rickard, she started thinking about those who do not get as much attention.

“I started thinking about the people we don’t see because they are shut-ins or

lonely and they are mostly seniors,” Fast said.

She used her father as an example. Living in Nanaimo on his own, he has only one leg and has limited mobility to the outside world.

“He only has family and is lonely,” Fast said. “I started with a hamper for him and it has snowballed.”

Fast contacted Gard online with the suggestion of putting hampers together for senior citizens who will be alone this Christmas.

“I offered to join in right away. I saw her post and thought, ‘Why not?’” she said.

“There’s no reason not to.”

Immediately an elderly neighbour came to mind.

“She has lived down the street since I was born and doesn’t get out,” Gard said. “Those are the people

we want to help.” The two started

purchasing gift and essential items, as well as special food items that the elderly might not enjoy during the rest of the year. Soon offers of cash and donations came in and they are hoping to fill the hampers with fresh baking and knitted items, like slippers or socks.

Local grocers, Quality Foods, Save-On-Foods and No Frills are all contributing food items.

With the help of all the proceeds from Santa photos at the Blue Marlin on Sunday, Dec. 20 from

10 a.m. to 1 p.m., they expect enough funds to meet or exceed their goal.

“We went from the idea of making five to 10, but now we are shooting for 10 to 20,” Gard said.

Gard’s six-year-old son also offered to pitch in to help put the hampers together.

“As a single mom, I want him to realize it is important to give back,” she said.

As a recent empty-nester, Fast said the project has restored her energy just as she was beginning to feel sorry for herself.

“It has given me a charge and lit a fire under me,” Fast said.

“I wasn’t even going to put up a tree but this has snowballed through my heart, mind and friends and has rejuvenated my Christmas by giving me a purpose.”

Another opportunity to help seniors this holiday is through a local Adopt a Grandparent initiative. Ellie Hadley has organized the project that will fund gifts to be distributed at Heritage Place on Dec. 21.

“Adopt a Grandparent is something I decided to do to give back to our community at Christmas,” Hadley said.

“I’ve experienced spending Christmas alone and it wasn’t fun as a young person. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to experience it later in life and having nobody to visit.”

Sponsors pay $20, which gives his or her adopted grandparent a pair of warm socks and a full-sized botanically-based hand cream.

Twenty sponsors are still needed but the deadline is quickly approaching.

Hadley needs confirmation by Tuesday, Dec. 15. She can be reached at 250-731-7535 or [email protected].

I started thinking about the people we don’t see because they are shut-ins...

BC Hydro crews work to clear lines on Kitsuksis Road on Thursday midway through a series of harsh Pacific storms that hit the west coast. Close to 9,000 people were without power at one point in the Alberni Valley due to storm damage. Monday we had a reprieve and now Wednesday the Weather Network is predicting we’ll have five to 10 cm of snow!

MP Johns delivers first House speech

Courtenay-Alberni’s NDP MP, Gord Johns, gave his first full speech in the House of Commons Friday morning and brought Ottawa’s focus squarely to the challenges facing his constituents.

“Small business is the core of our economy and the natural leader of innovation. We have opportunities to invest in innovation,” Johns said.

“Often the wealth of our country starts in rural communities,

but it leaves rural communities. We need to have shared prosperity with aboriginal people, and with all of our communities.”

Johns mentioned his

great-grandfather had worked at a paper mill in Ocean Falls which was then a town of 4,000 people but today its population has sunk to only 75. “I do not want to see that happen to Port Alberni. I do not want to see that happen to any more coastal communities.”

The new MP also called for real action to address factors facing seniors, saying a strategy is needed—particulary in a riding like his, with a high median age.

Gender based violence affects everyone. It destroys families, weakens the fabric of society and takes a heavy toll on communities and the economy. People who live in abusive relationships are more likely to experience low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts or PTSD.

A reminder to Canadians to take action began Nov. 25 with what is known as the 16 days of Activism. The 16 days of Activism Against Gender –Based Violence is an international organization evolving from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991. These dates were chosen to symbolically link violence against women and human rights, emphasizing such violence is a

violation of human rights.

Participation is worldwide including over 180 countries, 5,478 organizations, policymakers, government, UN agencies and countless numbers of individuals.

Port Alberni is a participant thanks to the Alberni Community and Women’s Services Society (ACAWS). Did you notice the purple ribbons along Stamp Avenue?

Each of the 118 ribbons reflect a domestic violence call received by the RCMP between Nov. 1 of last year and Nov. 1 of this year. These statistics are lower than the known incidents as

many women do not report to the police that they are experiencing domestic violence.

The reality of abuse is complex. Society grapples with the notion that the woman is to blame for their abuse when they choose to stay. Sadly enough, those abused believe this too. The one thing blame will not do, is change any of this.

So why don’t women just leave?

Many people who do not live with an abusive partner say that if their partner were ever to harm them they would leave. Many women who experience violence remember having had the same

resolve. Ending an intimate

relationship is never easy and even more so when one’s self-confidence has been undermined.

Women fear that no one will believe their partner’s abuse and/or that they beat them; the behaviour happens “behind closed doors”. Women often discover that many people and agencies trivialize the impact of abuse and no one seems to understand they feel like a prisoner who might be severely injured or die at the hands of the “jailer”.

Women conclude that since people don’t understand the seriousness of the abuse, they do not support disruption of the family.

Often women are isolated by their partner and lose their support systems. The partner is usually

highly possessive and excessively jealous. They believe they “own” the woman, are entitled to her exclusive attention and/or absolute obedience. The partner knows that

if the truth is told, supportive people will urge the women to leave or seek assistance.

Many of the abusive partners become remorseful after being violent. Since most women believe in committed relationships, building their lives around the relationship, they

hope and believe the partner will change.

Even when women decide to leave, their partners will put up many barricades. The partners threaten everything from stalking, to seeking custody of the children, to withholding support, interfering with employment, to turn children, friends and family against them, retaliatory suicide or other ways to escalate the violence. Escalation is also used to coerce the woman into reconciliation or to retaliate for trying to leave.

A real fact is; women are killed by their partners.

Leaving an abusive relationship is a process. Most women leave and return several times. The first time may be a test to see if her partner will actually get some help to

stop the behaviour. When the violence occurs again, she may leave to gather more information about available resources.

The next leaving may be about breaking the isolation or gaining financial independence. The most likely predictor of a woman permanently “staying gone” is whether she has the economic resources to survive on her own. Most women do leave.

If you or someone you know is experiencing an abusive relationship, ACAWS is a helpful community resource.

t’s been a long time since I’ve written about the Campbell Zoo. Some of you who have read my column for a few years know that I

have chronicled my adventures with my sister’s family, whom I affectionately referred to as the Zoo—which at various times included five children (including two stepdaughters), two dogs, three cats and a fish named Two-Tails.

Much has happened with the Zoo since my sister, the head zookeeper, relocated to Nova Scotia. She and her mate have parted ways, so the Zoo will now affectionately be referred to as the Family Zoo. My eldest niece has since let us know that we got the birth announcement wrong and henceforth will be referred to

as the eldest nephew (we couldn’t be more proud), my second nephew is engaged and living with his fiancée and their own menagerie of dogs, cats, rats, snakes, chinchillas (or maybe it’s a ferret), etc., and my youngest niece at 13 now towers over me. Also, one of the dogs, several cats and the fish named Two-Tails have since passed away.

The head zookeeper has earned her nursing degree and is working in a hospital in Parrsboro, or as the teenager says, “P-Dot Central.”

The elderly border collie was sadly put to rest earlier this year, but a new barking fluffball, Lola, has stolen everyone’s heart. Two cats rule the Zoo, and Olivia the rabbit watches everything from her perch, safely behind an indoor fence so Lola cannot “cuddle” with her.

The eldest nephew celebrated his 23rd birthday in the Maritimes while my sister and the teenager were visiting in Vancouver (and laughing at all the snow falling at home even while they were ensconced in a series of wet Pacific storms).

His transgender journey has been an arduous and emotionally painful one for him, and I am proud of how he is weathering it.

Pride week is a really big deal in our family now.

To Comment

There is no shortage of opportunities for residents to show their charitable side this holiday season.

Whether it’s a shelter, looking to provide meals and clothing for the homeless, a food

bank trying to fill the cupboards of low-income families and individuals, or an animal shelter issuing a desperate plea for help, the need is evident.

This is the time of year when people tend to dig a little bit deeper to support many worthy causes. It’s the season of giving, and that’s a good thing, because it’s also the season during which want is most keenly felt.

That’s why agencies redouble their work each autumn and volunteers for the Salvation Army once more take their places, manning Christmas kettles outside stores.

These, and other seasonal efforts, play a crucial role in helping to ensure people with limited means have, at minimum, a hearty meal and a gift or two to unwrap.

But once the lights have been taken down, the tree chipped and the last hot turkey sandwich eaten, we have a tendency to return to our daily routine and think less often about neighbours who may be scraping by.

It’s a constant struggle for food banks, for example, where each Thanksgiving and Christmas they see a jump in donations, but are forced to make do for much of the year, when donations slow to a trickle.

The remedy for our collective forgetfulness might be something as simple as a note on each calendar page or arranging a regular pre-paid contribution.

It makes sense — smaller regular payments, versus a large lump sum at a time of year when finances are already strained — and in terms of helping the organizations that many depend upon, year-round, to avoid the cycle of feast or famine.

Holiday Guide 2015 www.albernivalleynews.com A9Alberni Valley News - Tuesday, Dec 15, 2015

When faced with a gift list a mile long and no idea what to get certain individuals on that list, many holiday shoppers opt to give cash as a present. Cash gift s are easy, one-size-fi ts all and no one will request a receipt to return a cash gift . Still, some people are not quite sure if it is socially acceptable to give a gift of cash. Th ere are many pros and cons to giving cash as a gift . Once a person weighs the advantages and the disadvantages to giving cold hard cash as a gift , then he or she can decide if cash is an ideal present or one that’s best avoided.

AdvantagesOne of the advantages to giving cash is it elim-inates waste. Unlike gift s that will never be used and simply take up space, cash will be used sooner or later. How of-ten have you received a sweater you won’t wear or a trinket you won’t use? Sometimes people return these gift s, but very oft en they get relegated to a pile of belongings that will end up in the garbage or stashed in the back of a closet. Cash eliminates this waste by giving a person the opportunity to buy exactly what he or she wants.Cash gift s may be ideal for older people to give

because they have limit-ed mobility and cannot get out to the store to shop for presents. And grandparents unaware of the latest trends can give cash in a card and instruct grandchildren to purchase something they like. Some people overex-tend themselves during the holiday season, and a cash gift can soft en the blow of holiday spending. Cash is very portable, which can make it easier for those who travel for the holidays to avoid shipping costs or extra baggage fees to take gift s on airlines.People are inundat-

ed with a lot of stuff already, and a cash gift might be just what the doctor ordered.DisadvantagesCash gift s may be con-sidered impersonal and lacking in creativity. It does not take much eff ort to stash a dollar amount inside of an envelope and present it, so gift recipients may question their relation-ships with gift givers who give cash. For many people, the excitement of the holidays has a lot to do with seeing a giant pile of gift s waiting to be unwrapped. Gift ing cash removes that excitement of

presents under the tree. Although items can be purchased later on, the immediate gratifi cation of tearing through boxes and bags simply is not there. Some people fi nd it awkward to receive cash because the value of the gift is right there in black and white. It puts both people on the spot and may create some uncomfortable moments if the value of a cash gift does not match up to what the cash recipient spent on the cash giver. When gift ing standard gift s, many people are unaware of what the other spent and if the item was purchased on

a discount. If you gift with cash, there is no hiding the value.Another disadvantage is if a person gives cash and receives cash in return. Do the two gift s cancel each other out? What if the amounts are diff erent? Dealing in cash alone can be awkward.Th ere are ways to make giving cash a little more acceptable. If you get creative when handing over the money, this may take away from the fact that cash does not make a very dramatic gift . * Try pairing the cash with a wallet or purse to make the presentation a

little more interesting. * Send the recipient on a scavenger hunt for the money, writing clues and hiding them around the house.* Create a money tree or wreath that displays the cash in an interesting way.* Fold bills into bows or tape together to make wrapping paper for a small token gift .* For children, roll up bills and put it into a crayon box or pencil case.* Fill up a large box with a lot of fi ller and hide the cash inside of a smaller box tucked inside.

Gift cards are a staple of the holiday season. Oft en a go-to gift when other options just do not seem to suffi ce, gift cards remove the worry about whether or not the item will fi t or if it’s the right color or model. Gift cards can make ideal gift s because they are chosen with the recipients’ likes and tastes in mind while allowing recipients to shop without spending their own money. Today’s gift cards are better than those of yes-teryear, which typically came with expiration dates and onerous fees. E-gift cards, which can be purchased and redeemed online, are among the most conve-nient of all gift cards.

Although gift cards have many positive attributes, it’s diffi cult to overlook that gift cards are viewed as a safe gift lacking in originality. But the National Retail Federation notes that in 2011, 57.7 percent of survey respondents said they would prefer to get a gift card that year. Th is ranks gift cards higher than electronics, clothing and accessories as desired gift s. Recip-ients of holiday cheer seemingly would like to pick out their own pres-ents, which can ease the burden on gift -givers searching high and low for the perfect gift s.Still, giving a gift card can remove some of the excitement of unwrap-ping a mystery gift . By employing a few cre-

ative tips, gift cards can be fun and unique.Nesting boxesAnother way to present a gift card is to hide it inside of a box that looks like any other gift . However, once the person unwraps the gift , he or she will discover another wrapped box inside. Th is prank can be repeated over and over as many times as desired until the gift card is unearthed.Gift basketA gift card can be ensconced with other trinkets and tied into a theme. For exam-ple, a gift card for a spa massage may be complemented by lotions, massage oil and a terry-cloth robe. Th ese items can all be

packaged together in a decorative basket to make the entire gift eye-catching and appealing.Th emed wrappingPlace the gift card inside of an item that epitomizes the gift . A card for a bookstore can be nestled inside of the pages of a classic book. A gift card to a hair salon can be attached to

the end of a hairbrush. For those gift ing to a fa-vorite coff ee shop, place the gift card inside of an empty coff ee mug.Shopping savvyOff ering a gift card as a present is entitling the recipient to a day of shopping. Wrap the card with a reusable shopping tote so that he or she can carry pur-chases inside. You can

monogram the bag with initials or even decorate it. Otherwise, purchase a new wallet and place the gift card inside. Wrap the wallet and encourage the recipient to go on a spree.Special deliveryFor a creative spin, work with a retailer that off ers home delivery service. Ask to have the gift card attached inside

of a pizza box or nestled in a bouquet of fl owers. When the recipient receives the delivery, he or she will be surprised by the added gift .Gift cards make conve-nient gift s, but they may not carry with them the panache of other holiday gift s. Dressing up gift cards in creative ways can make them even more appreciated.

Are cash gifts tacky or ideal?

We want to wish everyone a Happy and Safe HolidayHappy and Safe HolidayHappy and Safe Holiday

Holiday Guide 2015

Th e song may say, “there’s no place like home for the holidays,” yet many people fi nd their holidays are just as well spent in some-one else’s abode. Th e popular motor club federation AAA says that more than 90 mil-lion Americans journey 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holiday season, and each year the number of travelers increases. When opening their homes to loved ones and friends, hosts want to make their guests feel welcome. Fortu-nately, there are many ways to do just that.

Establish a cozy nookDetermine where your guests will be sleeping. Do not worry if you do not have a separate guest room. Th ere are other things you can do, such as giving up your own bedroom for the duration of their stay. Otherwise, turn

another spot into a guest area. A den or liv-ing room with a pullout sofa also might work. Children’s rooms also are another idea. Let young children camp out in the living room or the basement while you turn their rooms into spots for your guests. Th e kids will appreciate the novelty of setting up sleeping bags, and guests will get some measure of privacy.

Have separate guest amenitiesInvest in some lush towels and wash cloths reserved for guests. Also, have comfortable sheets on hand. Be sure all linens are freshly washed, and have a drawer or two available in case guests want to unpack their suitcases. Keep some toiletries stocked as well. A few extra toothbrushes, mouthwash, soap, and other personal items

may be needed to accommodate forgetful guests.Provide creature comfortsGuests won’t be used to the rooms in your house, so be sure that you off er a light for a nightstand and an alarm clock. Nightlights placed in the bath-room or hallway can illuminate unfamiliar surroundings. Keep a fan on hand so that guests can adjust the temperature in their rooms and also if they need a little white noise while they sleep. A tray with books, magazines and the Wi-Fi code also may be appreciated.

Separate bathroom facilitiesIf possible, devote one bathroom in the house for guests’ use. Th is way they will have all the privacy they need. Ask if there are any special products they like to use in the bathroom,

helping to cut down on the items guests need tobring with them.

Stock favorite foodsMake a list of the foods that your guests enjoy and plan a shopping trip to stock up on these items. Encourage guests to have free reignof the kitchen, helping themselves to snacks or whatever is desired. Remember to ask about any dietary restrictions, including allergies.

Deep clean your homeClear away unnecessaryclutter and give fl oors a fresh wash or vacu-uming, especially if you have pets. Pay special attention to showers and the bathroom itself. You don’t want guests tripping over your belongings.A few special and simple touches can quickly prepare a home for holiday hosting and entertaining.

With so many people on the move, the risk for accidents and other incidents increases. To keep the holidays enjoyable and safe, trav-elers should remember to exercise caution.• Schedule a tune-up. Make sure your car is in good working order. Check the air pressure in tires and get an oil change if it is time. Other cars on the road may kick up salt and other debris from the roadways, so be certain to top off windshield

washer fl uid to main-tain adequate visibility.• Leave plenty of time. Expect traffi c and leave extra time to get to your destination. Hur-rying may cause you to increase your speed or make risky maneuvers behind the wheel that can increase your risk of accident and injury. Leave extra time as well for traveling through weather conditions like snow and sleet.• Know various routes to the destination. Volume or accidents

can result in road detours. Keep a paper map in the car or rely on navigation systems. • Leave room for emergency supplies. Stock your vehicle with a change of clothes, blankets, snacks and drinks, jumper cables, a fl ashlight, and addi-tional safety supplies. Drivers should be prepared in the event of a breakdown.• Keep children enter-tained. A long trip can seem longer with unhap-

py children in tow. Plan ahead with some activities to keep kids occupied while on the road. Games, books, videos, and music can fi ll the time. Make fre-quent stops so kids can get out of the car and stretch. And don’t for-get to pack some food and drinks to cut down on time-consuming reststop visits.• Take turns driving. Spending long hours behind the wheel can cause fatigue. Share driving responsibilities with another adult passenger to help avoid drowsy driving condi-tions. If no one else is available to share the load, pull over and rest from time to time.• Secure packages and luggage. Tie down items on roof racks and in rear cargo areas of SUVs and vans so they’re not moving around freely. In the event of an accident, items that are not secured can be dan-gerous. Pack gift s and other items so that the driver’s line of sight is not impeded. If holiday travel is in your future, remem-ber to make safety a priority.

Frosty the SnowmanFrosty the Snowman, was a jolly happy soul,With a corn cob pipe and a button nose, and two eyes made of coal.

Frosty the Snowman, is a fairytale, they say.He was made of snow, but the children know he came to life one day.

Th ere must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found,

For when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around!

Oh, Frosty, the Snowman, was alive as he could be;and the children say he could laugh and play, just the same as you and me.

Th umpety thump, thump, thumpety thump, thump, look at Frosty go.

Th umpety thump, thump, thumpety thump, thump, over the hills of snow.

Frosty the Snowman, knew the sun was hot that day,so he said, “Let’s run, and we’ll have some fun now, before I melt away.”

Down to the village, with a broomstick in his hand,Running here and there, all around the square, sayin’, “Catch me if you can.”

He led them down the streets of town, right to the traffi c cop;

and only paused a moment, when he heard him holler, “Stop!”

For Frosty, the Snowman, had to hurry on his way,But he waved goodbye, sayin’ “Don’t cry, I’ll be back again some day.”

Rudolph The Red Nosed ReindeerYou know Dasher, and Dancer, andPrancer, and Vixen,Comet, and Cupid, andDonder and BlitzenBut do you recallTh e most famous reindeer of all

Holiday shoppers tend to fall into three dis-tinct camps. Th ere are those people who have completed all of their shopping and wrapping even before November ends. Others shop in the weeks between Th anksgiving and Christmas. Finally, many people wait until the last min-ute, and such shoppers are the ones seen rush-ing from store to store on December 24.Waiting until the last possible second to purchase a gift may not prove much of a problem when shop-ping for birthday gift s. But come the holiday season, such procrasti-nation may fi nd shoppers perusing limited inventories and dealing with other frantic proscrastinators. But even those shop-pers who still plan to

put off their holiday shopping can make the most of such stalling this holiday season.

• Consider eGift cards. Many retailers off er digital gift cards that can be emailed in a matter of minutes. Purchase the card from the online retailer and email the redemption code to the gift recipient. Time the email to arrive on Christmas morning or include all of the necessary information in a holiday card.

• Ship to store. Some shoppers like the convenience of ship-to-store services. Th is enables a person to purchase a gift online but avoid shipping charges by having the item made available at a store location. In-stock items are typically

ready the day of purchase, and this helps you avoid crowds and impulse buys, as online purchases are typical-ly available at special pick-up locations inthe store that allow online shoppers to skip long lines at the registers.

• Avoid gimmick gift s.Skip the “as seen on TV” aisle at the store or trendy infomercial gift s. Such gift s may suggest to their recipients that you waited until the last minute to buy the gift s and then really didn’t have any good ideas.

• Expect extra charges and factor such charges into your budget. Procrastinating may work for your schedule, but expect to pay more if you shop online and

require shipping. You will probably need to expedite shipping if you expect to have gift s delivered on time. Verify the delivery date before making any purchases. Paying more for shipping may out-weigh the hassle of driving to store aft er store searching for gift s. Online retailers like Amazon may even off er selective delivery on Christmas Eve.

• Check store hours. Some stores off er extended shopping hours to meet the needs of last-minute shoppers. You may be able to visit early morning or late at night to skip the crowds. Certain department stores time sales w ith these extended hours, such as “early bird” or “night owl” specials, so you may even be rewarded for procrastinating.

• Shop smaller retailers. One way to avoid the hassles that oft en come with holiday shopping is to patronize smaller, independent shops. Chances are the crowds will be smaller at these shops and you may have access to a more unique selection of gift s than you would fi nd at the nearby mall.

Novice holiday hosts oft en have a lot on their plates. Whether hosting family or friends or a combination of both, fi rst-time hosts typical-ly want to impress their guests while ensuring they get enough to eat and have an enjoyable evening. Since dinner is such a big part of hol-iday gatherings, hosts oft en place extra em-phasis on what to serve, and that can be tricky when this is the fi rst time they are hosting. When planning the menu for your holiday soiree, consider the following tips.

* Get a head count. Th ough other factors will infl uence what to serve, the size of your guest list may ultimate-ly dictate what to serve. For example, a small gathering of four to fi ve people will likely rule out turkey, as even a small turkey will prove too much eff ort and produce too much extra food. On the same note, a small dish like lasagna might not be doable for a larger crowd, as it will force you to prepare multiple entrees, which means more time in the kitchen juggling the various cooking duties

and less time with your guests. Once you have confi rmed just how many guests you will be hosting, you can then choose a main course that suits the size of your guest list.

* Decide which type of party you want to host. Th e type of party you want to host also will infl uence what you serve. A formal gath-ering should include an appetizer, a main course and a dessert, including both caff ein-ated and decaff einated coff ees. A less formal gathering gives hosts more leeway. For exam-ple, whereas a formal gathering may include soup as an appetizer, hosting a less formal gathering allows hosts to put out some snacks or bread for guests to whet their appetites before everyone sits down for the meal. Th e more formal the gath-ering, the more formal the menu. Hosts of less formal gatherings may even want to host a holiday pot luck buff et, inviting guests to bring a favorite dish or side dish while the hosts take care of the main course.* Ask guests if they

have any dietary restrictions. Upon being invited to a holiday dinner, some invitees may let hosts know if they have any food allergies or medical conditions that restrict which foods they can eat. Solicit such information from all of your guests, and do your best to cater to each of your guests' needs. Some guests might be on a gluten-free diet while others may need to lim-it their sodium intake. You might not be able to meet everyone's de-mands. Let guests know if they should bring an appropriate snack if you cannot provide one for them.

* Include traditional holiday fare. People have grown to expect certain things from holiday meals, be it sweet potatoes on Th anksgiving, bris-ket for Chanukah or holiday cookies or even eggnog at Christmas parties. When planning the menu, be sure to include at least one of these traditional items, even asking guests for suggestions. Such fare will give the party a genuine holiday feel,

and guests will appre-ciate seeing some items on your dinner table they have enjoyed at their own holiday celebrations over the years.

* Don't overdo it. First-time hosts want to ensure everyone gets enough to eat, so it's easy to overdo things and prepare too much food. Th is can be ex-pensive, and guests may feel obligated to overeat so hosts don't have to

discard any of the food they worked so hard to prepare. Th ough it might once have been a holiday tra-

dition to overeat, many men and women now prefer moderation, and hosts should keep that in mind when prepar-

ing their holiday meals. Hosting a holiday dinner for the fi rst time can be nerve-wracking.

Turkeys are the main course for many holi-day dinners, and turkey left overs also make for popular meals once holidays have come and gone. Although turkeys earn most of their attention during the holiday season, their health benefi ts can be enjoyed throughout the year.Turkey contains 34 cal-ories and 1 gram of fat per ounce (33 grams) of meat. It is low in satu-rated fat and is a good source of protein. Turkey contains seleni-um, which can promote healthy function of the thyroid and boost the immune system. Selenium also helps to

eliminate free radicals in the body through its antioxidant power.Th ose who need to increase their B vitamin intake also can turn to turkey. A serving of turkey has 36 percent of the daily allowance of vitamin B3, which helps process fats in the body. It also contains vitamin B6, which helps maintain steady blood sugar levels. In addi-tion to these vitamins, turkey also is rich in many minerals, includ-ing iron, phosphorous, potassium, and zinc. One of the most popu-lar ways to cook turkey is to roast it. Place the turkey on a roasting rack so that any fat will

drain to the bottom of the pan. Baste the turkey with fresh mari-nade to keep it moist. It’s best to cook any stuffi ng outside of the turkey so there is no potential for contam-ination by bacteria. Make stuffi ng healthier by using whole-grain rice, vegetables, dried fruits, and nuts in lieu of a heavy bread base. Left over roasted turkey can be ground and used to make tacos and burgers or chopped and turned into turkey salad. Th e possibilities for left over turkey are endless, especially for cooks willing to try their hands at some-thing new.

Along with the fra-grant evergreens and twinkling lights synonymous with the holiday season, poin-settias make up a key component of holiday decorating. Unlike holly and some of the other greenery that is commonly asso-ciated with the holi-days, poinsettias do not naturally thrive in the colder temperatures. Th ese plants originate in southern Mexico and were considered an exotic plant when fi rst introduced to the United States by Joel Robert Poinsett, the fi rst American ambas-sador to Mexico.Poinsettias can be fi ckle plants and ones that gardening novices may fi nd challenging to maintain. Th e plants are comprised of green foliage, colorful (oft en red) fl ower bracts, and

the actual fl owers of the plants, which are the red or green buttonlike parts nestled in the center of the bracts. Because they are a trop-ical plant, poinsettias can be damaged by ex-posure to low tempera-tures, even if they are only exposed for short periods of time. Th ey should be wrapped and protected against the elements when brought home. For maximum plant life, poinsettias need to be placed near a warm, sunny window, or another area that has ample amounts of light. Th ey thrive in tempera-tures between 60 and 75 F and should be kept away from warm or cold draft s. Water the plant when-ever the surface feels dry to the touch. Water until it drains out the bottom, but don’t let the plant sit in water.

Over- or under-water-ing can cause leaves to drop prematurely and wilt. If your home lacks in humidity, you may need to water the plant more frequently. Poin-settias do not need to be fertilized while the plant is in bloom. Th e Ohio State Uni-versity Extension says poinsettias can be re-fl owered the following Christmas, but unless a yearlong schedule of care is observed, the results usually are not good. You can speak with a gardening expert or consult online re-sources for the proper care schedule. Caring for a poinsettia year-round involves gradual-ly drying out the plant and storing it in a cool location. Th e plant later will be moved outdoors and then back inside and pruned to keep a full shape.

Poinsettias are short-day plants, which means they fl ower about 10 weeks aft er the daylight shortens to about 12 hours or less. Th erefore, to have the plant in full fl ower by Christmas, it will have to be kept in complete darkness between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. from the fi rst part of October until Th anksgiving. Many people fi nd the aff ordability of poin-settias makes it more convenient to buy new ones each year than try to foster regrowth.Contrary to popular be-lief, poinsettias are not poisonous to humans or animals, but they should not be ingested due to the potential for allergic reactions. Poinsettias can help remove pollutants from indoor air, which is ad-vantageous during the winter months when doors and windows are typically kept closed.Select plants that have dark green foliage and no low or damaged leaves. Th is ensures the best success for keeping poinsettias looking healthy and vibrant throughout the holiday season.

KOCSIS, Maria (Mary) nee Farkas

February 7, 1937to December 3, 2015

It is with sadness that we an-nounce the passing of Maria Kocsis on December 3, 2015 with her family by her side at Th e Village at Smith Creek in West Kelowna. She is survived by Jim, her loving husband of 58 years; two sons: Jim (Dana) of Penticton, George (Eliza-beth) of Armstrong and two grandchildren: Christopher and Carissa. She is also survived by her sister, Julie (Janos) in Hun-gary and brother, Joseph (Isabella) of Parksville in addition to numerous relatives in Hungary.Maria was born in Kimle, Hungary in 1937 and immigrated to Canada along with her soon to be husband Jim in 1956. Th ey were married in Abbotsford in 1957 and following several brief stays in Vancouver and Nanaimo they settled to raise their fam-ily in Port Alberni. Maria was a dedicated mother who juggled part time work with raising her family. She found employment in various establishments as an exceptional cook. Perhaps her favorite position was in the kitchen at Woodward’s where she worked her culinary magic for over 19 years. Maria was a kind and compassionate person who made a lasting impression on everyone that knew her. She loved gardening, golfi ng, volunteer-ing, playing crib and spending time with her family.

A Memorial Mass in celebration of Maria’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 1:00 pm

at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2547 Hebert Road, West Kelowna.

In lieu of fl owers, donations in Maria’s memory can be made to the Village at Smith Creek, 2425 Orlin Rd., West Kelowna, V4T 3C7 or the Alzheimer Society of B.C. #300 - 828 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1E2. Condolences may be shared by visiting www.everdenrust.com. Arrangements in care of Everden Rust Funeral Services, West Kelowna.

WILLIAM DARREN GOODYEAR

Bill, or Billy, as you prefer, was predeceased by his father William Maxwell Goodyear in 1987. He is survived by his mother, his buddy, his pal, his friend, Betty Goodyear Levins; stepfather Milt Levins, brother Travis Goodyear and Colby McMeekin, sister Dana Few and Todd Janey; stepsisters Serena and Kevin Clarke, Trish Levins and Derek Ferguson, nieces and nephews Tyler and Tyrone Nicole, Nicholas, Logan, Hannah, Emily and Ava and great nephew Emre and to all of his aunts, uncles and cousins thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Billy passed away peacefully at Ty Watson House with his family at his side on December 6, 2015. If you have ever had the pleasure to meet this special man, you know he had a contagious personality. Billy was always a Newfoundlander and loved the jokes. He was an amazing brother to Travis and Dana, as he was to his stepsisters Serena and Trisha; and always so adoring and caring to all of his nephews and nieces. He was a huge fan of the Canucks, Blue Jays and loved his Pink Floyd music. We would like to thank the nursing staff s for all their caring and also to Dr. Alan Fraser for his being there every day; and of course Ty Watson House….incredible what you do every day. Flowers are gratefully declined, donations should be made toTy Watson House in Bill’s memory. The family will hold a private family service on Dec. 15, 2015.

A celebration of Billy’s life is planned from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Hansen Hall, 3940 Johnston Rd, Port Alberni BC. We would love to see you there.

Condolences and stories may be left for the family by visiting www.chapelofmemories.ca.

THURSDAY: War on the floor at SFU. SPORTS

Karen Steinicke, ticket and merchandise sales volunteer, works behind the new live edge counter in the expanded Bulldogs’ office, which opened Friday at the AV Multiplex.

Busy weekend for BulldogsSUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs had a busy, storm-filled weekend that saw them open their newly expanded office, come from behind to beat the West Kelowna Warriors and postpone their game against Trail Smoke Eaters until Monday night because BC Ferries cancellations meant the Smoke Eaters were stuck on the other side of Georgia Strait.

In between, they also made a couple of player transactions.

Team and city officials gathered on Friday afternoon to cut the official ribbon signifying the end of construction on the office. The expansion offers a ticket counter and retail space that opens up to the Multiplex on one side, and was built with local labour and wood products.

The Bulldogs beat West Kelowna Warriors 4–2 in Friday night’s contest. Kelowna was leading 2–1 in the second period but Eric Margo tied it and Josh Adkins scored twice in the third period to seal the win.

Friday was Owen Johnson’s first game in a Bulldogs’ uniform after the ‘Dogs and Surrey Eagles swapped defencemen—Alberni sending 1995-born blueliner Tyler Cooper to the Eagles for 20-year-old Johnson.

“Owen is a 20-year-old who’s got more experience in the BCHL,” Bulldogs’

coach Kevin Willison said Friday afternoon. “We’re looking to him for leadership. We need a little bit of improvement on the back and these kinds of trades don’t come every day. We had to give up youth to get a veteran.”

The Saturday home game against Trail was postponed due to the storm whipping

the West Coast that forced BC Ferries to cancel several routes. The Smoke Eaters had been enroute from Powell River where they defeated the Kings 4–2 on Friday.

On Monday, the Bulldogs picked up Rhett Willcox from the Cowichan Valley Capitals in exchange for future considerations.

THURSDAY: A roundup of pre-

Christmas events.ARTS THE

Anderson brings Christmas to Char’s

Beth Marie Anderson has cut three albums in Nashville and several of her songs have been recorded by other artists. She comes to Char’s Landing for a Christmas concert on Saturday, Dec. 19.

Country and jazz recording artist Beth Marie Anderson returns to Char’s Landing on Saturday, Dec. 19, this time with her Island Christmas Concert tour.

This year has been a whirlwind full of opportunity for this young singer-songwriter from Vancouver

Island. Anderson’s song Sunday Shoes was the lead radio single for Canadian artist, Alessia Cohle, Anderson received FACTOR funding to record music in the spring, and was again selected as an Emerging Artist at the CMA Fan Fair in Nashville this past June.

Anderson had a busy summer showcasing at the SML Songwriting Festival in Virginia, recording and releasing her third studio album in Nashville, and writing songs for her upcoming Christmas Album, set to release in Winter 2016.

Her latest adventure

is her 16 date Christmas Tour of Vancouver Island alongside the release of her radio Christmas Single, The First Noel.

Anderson will be joined by Darcy Phillips, a pianist, composer, and producer located in Victoria.

Tickets to hear Anderson and Phillips are $15 ($13 in advance) and are available at Char’s Landing and Finishing Touches or call (778) 421-2427 to purchase via credit card.

Char’s Landing is located at 4815 Argyle St. at Fifth Avenue in the white church building.

From / A5My mother travelled

from coast to coast to attend Halifax’s pride parade with my nephew and the teenager in July; and all of us have learned so much about transgenderism from a very personal view.

My Wednesday last week was steeped in the teen vernacular as I accompanied the youngest to a Twenty one Pilots concert in Vancouver. She had been counting the days from about 200 down to the concert, after phoning me one day nearly a year ago asking if I would take her to the concert as her mom didn’t really want to go.

The band—which is really two guys from Columbus, Ohio, neither one of them pilots—put on a great show and it turns out I like their music. The best part about the concert, though, was watching the teenager enjoy her first-ever concert. So different from the concerts I used to attend when I was a little older than her: we used to raise Bic lighters and wave them in the air. Now, kids raise their smart phones and wave them in the air while recording every little

part of the concert. For a short person,

it makes watching the concert challenging, especially from the middle of the standing pit of humanity in

front of the stage. The things I will do

for the Family Zoo.
