Hello Corvette Enthusiasts,

As of the publication of this newsletter, Springfest 2017 has not yet

happened, but Joe and Denise Iervolino and their dedicated team of

volunteers have been very busy preparing for this judged show. I’m sure it will be

very successful and we’ll have the best Tricky Tray ever! Results and photos will

appear in the June newsletter.

Thanks to Mike and Cindy Cutro for once again organizing our Stroudsmoor

luncheon on April 30th, with 65 members planning to attend this annual event.

May is a very busy month with car shows and cruise nights every weekend and

some even during the week, so keep those ‘Vettes shiny and ready to go!

Remember that Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 14th. I would like to wish a

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in the club.

AACC will once again be participating in the annual Bethlehem Memorial Day

parade on Monday May 29th followed by a planned visit to two family homes of

fallen heroes. Finally, I wish a safe and fun trip to the 25 Corvettes heading up to

Bar Harbor Maine on May 30th.

I hope to see you at our next meeting or at one of the many events this month.

Ed Holaska (1951-2017) Tue., Apr. 18 | Sadly, one of our lifetime members has passed away. Ed Holaska was a club

member since 1989. The following obituary appeared in The Morning Call and Legacy.com.

Edward J. Holaska, 66, of Catasauqua, died on Tuesday, April 18th, 2017 in St. Luke's

Hospital, Fountain Hill. He was the husband of Gale (Erney) Holaska. Born in Catasau‐

qua, he was a son of the late Paul T. and Dorothy B. (Farley) Holaska. He was em‐

ployed as an operating engineer for Agere for over 32 years and was also a school bus

driver for over 12 years. He was a member of St. John Fisher Catholic Church, N. Cata‐

sauqua. He was a former Catasauqua Borough council member, a member of the Catasauqua American Legion

Post #215 and founder of the Catasauqua Chapter of the American Legion Riders, a volunteer for the Catasau‐

qua Fire Co. for over 50 years, a member of the Southwark Fire Co. Social Club, and a lifetime member of the

Fullerton Fire Co. #1 Social Club. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors: Survivors include his wife, daughters Alicia wife of Steven Hagenbuch of Allentown and Annette

wife of Kenny Funk of Catasauqua, stepson Sean and wife Anne Erney of Northampton, brother Paul and wife

Dorothy Holaska of N. Catasauqua, and grandchildren Paige, Gavin and Lila. He was predeceased by a sister

Dorothy.

Services: A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, April 22nd, 2017, at St. John Fisher Catholic Church 1229

3rd St. N. Catasauqua. A viewing was held Friday, April 21st and Saturday at the Brubaker Funeral Home. Con‐

tributions can be made to the Catasauqua American Legion Post #215, 330 2nd St. Catasauqua, PA 18032.

Fri., Mar. 31 | Jeff Mohring and Ike Eisenhart partnered for an engaging Breakfast and Buicks. Following Corvettes &

Coffee at The Bull & Bear restaurant, the crew of 30 headed next door for a guided tour of the Bulgari Collection. The

collection is housed on the (much) renovated former site of the Boulevard Drive‐In complex. The site includes a driving

track and multiple buildings where cars can be restored and displayed and parts stockpiled. It also houses the head‐

quarters of the Historical Vehicle Association and a sizable chunk of Bulgari's personal auto collection. Vintage car col‐

lector and billionaire jewelry magnate Nicola Bulgari has a passion for Buicks but the collection includes many marques.

All vehicles in the collection are road worthy and driven (semi) regularly. The facility’s gates were opened for the 50th

anniversary of the Buick Club of America’s event in July 2016, but is otherwise closed to the public. Thanks to Ike for

arranging this special event through his connections at the America on Wheels museum!

Recap: Corvettes & Coffee Visit the Bulgari Collection

Tue., Apr. 04 | Six couples joined Kevin and Michelle Minnich at one of their favorite restaurants, Hampton Winds, for

a five‐course gourmet meal. We essentially had the restaurant to ourselves that evening with only one other couple

dining. Entrée favorites of the evening included the Cast Iron Seared Scallops with Cauliflower Three Ways, Pan Sared

Chicken with Herb Jus and Pan Seared Duck Breast. The dessert cart simply contained too many wonderful options for

any to stand out! Watch for another dinner later in 2017.

Fri., Apr. 21 | The weather did not cooperate with the club’s plans to attend the ballgame with the

game called due to water on the field. Members who purchased tickets still enjoyed the buffet

meal and were invited to return to a future game of their choice with a bonus $15 stadium credit

loaded to their game ticket. Check the weather forecast before selecting your make‐up game!

Sun., Apr. 30 | Fresh from a cruise, Mike and Cindy Cutro greeted 62 guests at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn. Atten‐

dees split between caravanning from the Lehigh Valley and arriving directly at the Inn. Once on‐site, most arranged

their cars for an ill‐fated group photo. (We missed Len and his drone camera.) After the photo everyone adjourned to

the bar for some socializing and eventually found their way into the buffet room. The American Harvest Buffet offered

something for everyone with an extensive salad and seafood bar, carving stations, and many wonderful hot entrée

choices. Desserts were served tableside by the wait staff. Thanks again to Mike and Cindy for arranging this annual fa‐

vorite event!

Fri., May 12 | Join your AACC friends to tour Yuengling Brewery (Pottsville, PA) with Jeff Mohring.

Tour cost is $1.50 per person. Lunch will follow at nearby Roma Pizzeria. Limited to 45 people.

be departing at 9:15 am from the parking lot behind the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Fogelsville

Sun., May 07 | Joe and Denise Iervolino are bordering on a panic attack with their first

Springfest Corvette Show a mere days away. What can help calm them down is our collective

support as a club. The trophies were ordered, Tricky Tray prizes sorted, volunteer positions

filled, and Bill Nichols made his final travel plans from Michigan.

Hopefully you already registered your Corvette for the show. If not, visit our website to

download the form and (at this point) arrive on Sunday with the day‐of‐show fee ($25). Be sure to say a quick prayer

for nice weather, no mud or potholes enroute, and strong competition for the show.

Tue.‐Sun., May 30 to Jun. 04 | AACC heads north to Bar Harbor, Maine to (among other things)

attend the weekend‐long event hosted by Vettes of Coastal Maine. There is a limit of 25 cars. Regis‐

tered attendees will receive specific details directly from the event chairs.

Trip to Bar Harbor, Maine Chairs: Laura Hegyi (‘07), Mike Cutro (’14)

Mon., May 29 | We have been invited as a club to participate in the Bethlehem Memorial Day

Parade sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council. Lineup will begin at 8:30am in

front of Liberty High School. The parade is less than 1 mile and ends at the Memorial Park

Cemetery with a brief ceremony. Arrive early to avoid traffic problems as spectators will also be parking at the high

school. Parade personnel will direct our the cars to the staging area.

After the ceremony, those interested can participate in visits to (outside) memorials at the homes of two local fallen

soldiers — Christopher Seifert (325 Buttermilk Road, Williams Twp, PA; 8.4 miles from the cemetery) and Joshua

Klinger (675 Berger Road, Easton, PA; 3.1 miles from first home). If you are not participating in the parade/ceremony

but still wish to participate in the home memorial visits, please meet up with us at Memorial Park Cemetery at 11

am. Participants in the fallen soldier memorial visits are invited to a BBQ at Blair & Valerie Ferguson’s home (143 Pine‐

hurst Lane, Easton, PA, 18042) after the visits. Please contact Valerie directly @ 610‐438‐8885 to discuss with her what

you can bring to the BBQ.

Putt U Goes "Meetless" Chair: Gary George (‘93, ‘10) Wed., Jun. 21 | The club get‐together at Putt‐U (5200 Route 309 North, Center Valley, PA) will again be

"meetless" (not a meeting night). Enjoy the new greens installed prior to last season. Our start time is 7:00 pm. Bring

your ‘Vettes so everyone driving along 309 can envy you. Proceed to the check‐in window, tell them you’re with

“AACC”, sign the club attendance sheet, pick your foursome, and enjoy a challenging round of mini golf!

While there is no charge for club members to attend, each guest must pay a fee (approx. $5pp). Gary George advised

that a new concession trailer is on‐site for this season. Carnival foods are featured and pizza should be available until

we arrive in June.


Thu.‐Mon., Jun. 29 to Jul. 03 | Dennis Corona will lead a trip to Watkins Glen, NY for a long

weekend of touring, tasting, and racing. The destination of this trip is the IMSA 6 Hours at the

Glen race. 13 cars are participating. There are still openings, but contact Dennis Corona ASAP

to participate (610‐625‐5054 or [email protected]). Kevin Minnich will arrange area win‐

ery tours on Friday for those interested.

Dennis Corona will hold a short meeting following the regular club meeting on May 24th for all trip participants. Please

review the envelope Dennis provided to you during April in advance of this meeting and make all efforts to attend.

Watkins Glen Race Trip Chair: Dennis Corona (‘07)

6th Annual Car Show. The event will run from 9am‐2pm, is open to ALL

vehicles, and is free to attend! Registration 9‐11am. Food is available

for purchase from a local Boy Scout troop. Sign up at the dealership or

register online through the banner ad on Faulkner’s website or go di‐

rectly to www.faulknermotors.com/carshowregistration.

To do our part, AACC is seeking volunteers to help with registration

and parking. The Lehigh Valley Camaro Club will judge Corvettes;

AACC will judge all other vehicles. Be sure to add your name to the sign‐up sheet at an upcoming club meeting.

Chicken (& Ice Cream) Run Chair: Jeff Mohring (‘04, ‘16)

Sat., Jul. 08 | It’s time again for the AACC Chicken Run. We will depart the Lehigh Valley for lunch

at Kauffman’s Bar‐B‐Que Restaurant (Bethel, PA; www.kauffmansbbqrestaurant.com).

A post‐meal ice cream stop will likely be Heisler’s Dairy Bar (Tamaqua, PA; www.heislersdairy.com).

This is a rain or shine event; Corvettes are optional. More information will follow.

Chatterbox Cruise Chairs: Mike Cutro (‘14) & Bobby Riehl (‘14) Fri., Jul. 14 | Mike Cutro will lead any interested Corvette to Augusta, NJ for the Friday Night Cruise at the Chatterbox.

The group will depart the Park & Ride (Rte. 33 & Wm. Penn) in the mid‐afternoon (exact time TBD). Remember to bring

your chairs and 2‐way radios (tuned to Ch. 5.5). EZ‐Pass will be helpful for an express return trip. The group is departing

early to better ensure the chance of parking together in the spaces which Bobby Riehl hopes to save.


AACC Picnic Chair: Jeff Mohring (‘04, ‘16)

Sun., Jul. 23 | Join fellow club members for some summer food and fun at our annual

picnic. Details are still being confirmed but the venue is set — Bicentennial Park in East

Hanover Twsp., a few miles north of Lehigh Valley International Airport. The format re‐

mains the same with a minimal fee for the meal and drinks. Attendees are asked to bring

an appetizer, salad, side dish or dessert. Watch for the event flyer and response form in our June newsletter.

AACC’s Board of Directors reviewed the charity suggestions and narrowed the alterna‐

tives to fourteen (14) choices. Each exhibits the values of our club and directs

donations to our local area. Information on each charity was shared at the April 24th

regular meeting with a few of them being further presented by the individual who

made the suggestion. More presentations will be made at the May meetings. At the

May 24th meeting, club members will cast ballots to select five (5) of the identified charities who will receive partial

proceeds from our two car shows and other activities in the coming years.

Stoudts Brewery Tour & Lunch Chair: Joel Dean (’16)

Sun., Jul. 30 | Join your fellow and potential AACC members for a tour of Stoudts Brewing Company in Adamstown,

PA followed by lunch at the Picasso Room. Stoudts Brewery is a destination in itself, with a restaurant, raw bar, bakery,

creamery, coffee bar, plus the Antiques Mall. We plan to arrive about 11:30 am to park in a reserved Corvette area. We

will start by touring the antique mall and saying hello to the bakers who will have items out for us to sample and pur‐

chase. The brewery tour starts promptly at 1 pm, lasts about 30 minutes, then we head directly to lunch in the Picasso

Room. In this private room, we order off the menu and will have separate checks.

The event is rain or shine. Meet in the parking lot behind Cracker Barrel (Rtes. 78 & 100) at 10 am to depart by 10:15.

Seeking A New Meeting Venue AACC’s meeting room contract expires with the Best Western Conference Center on

Dec 31, 2017. Their renewal fees are beyond our budget so the Board of Directors

started a search committee and are asking for your help.

Some of the things to keep in mind in our search for an acceptable place — meeting

space must accommodate 100 people; adequate parking; club meeting dates (2nd &

4th Wed. of most months); access to the room from 7 pm – 9:30pm; no requirement to

purchase food or drinks and we do not require a venue to offer food or drinks.

Please forward your proposed meeting location details including cost and availability

to Laura Hegyi. It is also helpful to advise of venues you have contacted who cannot

meet our needs or are not interested in hosting meeting nights.

Mon., Apr 10 | What do you do if you’re Chevrolet and you’ve got TWO of the biggest events in Corvette history on the

boil – the C7 ZR1 and a secret mid‐engine car – but you can’t talk about them because they’re still in gestation yet? You

still have to carry on with business as usual.

If you’re Chevy, you do what you’ve done since the Silver Anniversary C3 debuted in 1978. You keep improving the

breed with new colors, improvements and a cool special edition thrown in for good measure. Just because you have big

product news coming doesn’t mean you can skip moving the sheet molded compound today.

Additionally, Chevrolet released its ordering guide for the 2018 Corvette yesterday as well and it’s telling in many ways.

What isn’t in the guide is probably most significant. Alas, there is nary a peep about the ZR1, so as previously men‐

tioned, here’s the sizzle until then.

First off, there’s the cool Carbon 65 Edition. According to Chevy Media:

“Chevrolet is commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Corvette with a new Corvette Carbon 65 Edition offered on

2018 Grand Sport 3LT and Z06 3LZ models.”

Limited to only 650 numbered vehicles globally, the distinctive Carbon 65 blends visible carbon‐fiber exterior elements

— notably, a new carbon‐fiber rear spoiler and quarter ducts — with a new Ceramic Matrix Gray exterior color and

up…” Will we see the ZR1 then? Summer is just three months away so we should know soon…hang on to your hats

Fri., Apr 21 | As most already know, the automotive industry in Venezuela has been steadily diminishing. Many plants

are barely producing, as the area has been hit by a [sic] extreme shortage of raw materials and many companies from

the States have struggled to access U.S. dollars for importation of parts.

The country’s crisis (which is blamed on the U.S.) has already severely impacted many U.S. companies, some being

“temporarily” taken over, most notably Clorox and our fellow friendly competitor, Ford. A couple years back, Ford com‐

pletely wrote off its investment ties to Venezuela after taking a whopping 800 million dollar pre‐tax write down. And

they weren’t the only ones.

Yesterday the news we all feared erupted; General Motors announced that they were also hit by the Venezuelan au‐

thorities – with its plant being illegally seized. “Yesterday, GMV’s (General Motors Venezolana) plant was unexpectedly

taken by the public authorities, preventing normal operations,” the company said in a statement. “In addition, other

assets of the company, such as vehicles, have been illegally taken from its facilities.”

It is unclear as to why the plant was seized but, nonetheless, GM plans to “take all legal actions,” as this showed a

“total disregard” of legal rights, described as an “illegal judicial seizure of assets.” Rightfully so, as they say this will

cause major harm to the company, its 79 dealers, suppliers, and the 2,678 workers (whom will each receive separation

payments from GM, as per the Venezuelan law).

The company has announced immediate cessation of Venezuelan operations, but will continue to serve the market’s

customers, providing aftermarket support and service.

2018 Corvette Seminar Highilghts Apr. 29 | One of the primary highlights for the annual Michelin NCM Bash is a presentation by

Corvette Engineers and Designers on the latest model year Corvette. This is typically the first time customers can see

the next model year car, including new colors, options and features. If you're on Facebook, we conducted a live video

of the seminar that you can still catch. We'll also have it posted on our You Tube soon. Specs for the car are available

on our website.

Mako Shark II Memorabilia Apr. 29 | The National Corvette Museum opened with much fanfare in 1994. On display were the best of the best,

unique and rare Corvettes.

Over Corvette’s history, many concept cars were shark inspired. Once such car was the blue over silver Mako Shark II.

Just as the Sting Ray racer served as inspiration for the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray, the

Mako Shark II directly influenced the styling of the 1968 production Corvette.

Up for auction is the informational board that was with the Mako Shark II when it was

on display at the Museum for the Grand Opening. The sign is professionally printed on

plastic and was designed and created by Exhibit Works. It is royal blue with a red bar,

white text and checker board ghosted pattern. Many celebrities were on hand for the

opening of the Museum, including the first Corvette Chief Engineer, Zora Arkus‐

Duntov. The sign is 25" tall by 15" wide.

GM Corvette Plant News Apr. 29 | At the Michelin NCM Bash, GM Corvette Plant Manager Kai Spande made

the official announcement that public tours of the plant would not be available for

approximately 18 months. The last day for public tours is currently Fri., June 16, 2017.

Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter further elaborated on the lack of availability,

citing the time needed to tie the new paint shop into the assembly line, and eventually

design a new tour route.

While Buyers' Tours and Engine Build options are not available for the 2018 model year Corvettes, R8C Museum Deliv‐

ery is still available, sans the plant tour portion of the package which can be fulfilled once the tours reopen.

Kai and Tadge also announced that the plant will be shut down August ‐ October. For those wanting 2018 Corvettes by

the end of July the deadline to order is June 12. Corvettes ordered after that date will be built once the plant re‐opens

in November.
