August 1, 2008. Good climbing weather, and teams of the world’s top mountaineers are literally queuing up to make the final assault on the planet’s deadliest peak.

K2, in the Himalayas, is 800ft lower than Everest, but K2 is the one they all want to climb. It’s one of the most hostile, brutally beautiful places on earth. Incredibly difficult to ascend. 278 peo-ple had, at this point, made it to the summit of K2. Only 254 had made it back down.

Most of the 30 mountaineers who set out on August 1, 2008 made it all the way to the top. They were in different teams, but there was a lot of co-operation. Ropes and in some cases ice axes, were shared. Although they were at 28,000 ft, in the “death zone” where the air may be too thin for most people, many went without oxygen, pre-ferring to take the mountain on without artificial aids.

By 8pm that evening most were descending. Then without warn-ing, a huge ice shelf just below the summit collapsed, ripping out the ropes which would have guided them down and leaving them trapped in plummeting temperatures. Eleven climbers died that weekend. No Way Down, by journalist Graham Bowley, tells the gripping, frightening true story. It reads like an unputdownable thriller; but it’s also a fascinating insight into what makes people risk their lives and what happens when they fail. It’s probably the nearest most of us will come to climbing K2. Depending on what kind of person you are, after reading this, you may be glad.

spendthedaybeggingforextrafooduponseeing

theportionmeasuredout-thisissimplynottrue!

Mydogenjoysitsomuch,thatIalsotakeitoutwith

meonwalksasadogtreatalongsidehissuperspe-

cialtreatsandbecauseitissocheapandlastssolong,itmeansthatIcan!Alt-

houghthebagcomesasadryfood,itcanbemixedwithwaterandgravytoturn

itintoawetfood,sowearelovingtheversatility.
