Maryland Natural Resources Police Blotter

Maryland Department of Natural Resources

Annapolis, MD --(Ammoland.com)- Anne Arundel County

• On December 7, 2010 at 4:45 p.m., the Maryland Natural

Resources Police (NRP) charged Anthony Michael Smith, 31 of

Glen Burnie, Md., with hunting while intoxicated/under the

influence of alcohol, hunting forest game with a shotgun capable of

holding more than three shells, and failure to wear fluorescent

orange while hunting forest game. NRP officers approached Smith

at River Road and Furnace Road in Linthicum during a routine

patrol. Smith showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol

and failed a field sobriety test. He was in possession of a 12 gauge

shotgun and two unopened beers.

Garrett County

• On December 2 at 8:15 p.m., NRP charged Kory Austin Kamp, 20

of Lonaconing, Md., with possession of an antlerless deer during

closed season. Officers responded to the area of Avilton Road to

investigate a report of illegal hunting. At the scene, the officers

followed ATV tracks in the snow to 295 Louvina Road and

observed Kamp in the garage with an antlerless deer. Antlerless

deer are not allowed to be harvested in Garrett, Allegany and

Washington Counties on private lands between November 27 and

December 9. The illegal antlerless deer was donated to a needy

family.

• On December 7, NRP served Tyler Ray Cosner, 19 of Oakland, Md.,

with a criminal summons for possession of marijuana, possession

of paraphernalia and trespass on private property. The summons

was a result of an investigation into trespassing on property of

Wisp Resort, where Cosner returned after being asked to leave.

During the investigation, NRP officers found a small metal pipe

with suspected marijuana.

Wicomico County

• On December 3, NRP charged Matthew Lee McCallister, 39 of

Allen, Md., with twelve counts of failure to field tag deer before

removing from place of kill, twelve counts of failure to record deer

kill on harvest record, one count of possessing deer during closed

season, and one count of possessing red-tailed hawk. The charges

stem from a three week investigation that resulted into a search

and seizure warrant that was executed on the McCallister

residence. A red tailed hawk was seized and given to Tri-State

Rehabilitation Center for rehabilitation. A rifle, whitetail deer and

numerous antlers were also seized during the search.

Alabama --(Ammoland.com)- The Alabama Department of

Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) will hold four youth

trapper education workshops between December 2010 and February

2011, with more to be scheduled during the 2011-12 trapping season.

Each of the two-and-a-half-day events is free to participants, and classes

are limited to 25 students per workshop. Youth need to be at least 6

years old to participate.

Youth under age 16 and under must be accompanied by a parent or

adult. During the classes, seasoned trapping instructors teach students in

a variety of subjects including the history of trapping, furbearer ecology

and management, trapping techniques, laws and regulations, and

outdoor ethics.

During the classes, seasoned trapping instructors teach students a

variety of subjects including the history of trapping, furbearer ecology

and management, trapping techniques, laws and regulations, and

outdoor ethics.

According to Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries

(WFF) Supervising Wildlife Biologist Mike Sievering, these workshops

offer the perfect opportunity for the youth of Alabama to learn skills and

techniques that can only be attained from hands-on activities.

“The youth of today are more accustomed to sitting on the

couch, playing video games, texting their friends or watching

TV,” Sievering said. “Opportunities like this to learn outdoor

skills seem to be somewhat limited. The youth trapper

education workshops are just one tool to reverse that trend.”

WFF developed the youth trapper education workshop in 2007, with

assistance from the Alabama Trappers and Predator Control Association

and USDA Wildlife Services, as a way to preserve this vanishing art. Visit

the hunting section of www.outdooralabama.com for more information

about trapping and the youth trapper education workshops.

Call 205-339-5716 to register.

The workshop dates and locations are:

• December 17-19, 2010, Decatur in Morgan County, Ala.

• January 7-9, 2011, Greensboro in Hale County, Ala.

• January 21-23, 2011, Rockford in Coosa County, Ala.

• February 18-20, 2011, Greenville in Butler County, Ala.

Shooting with Both Eyes Open

Shooting with Both Eyes Open

Outdoor Alabama

Alabama --(Ammoland.com)- You may have heard about eye

dominance, but do you know the significance of what it is and how it

works?

Essentially, the dominant eye looks directly at an object while the non-

dominant eye looks at the same object from a slight angle.

This small difference provides us with depth perception. The dominant

eye is primarily relied on for precise positional information and the non-

dominant eye is used to help determine distances.

This ability to determine the distance to an object is due to the two eyes

receiving slightly different images due to the wide positioning on the

face.

While understanding which is your dominate eye is especially important

in shooting sports disciplines, hunters might also benefit from a better

understanding of eye dominance.

In the most recent issue of Outdoor Alabama magazine, Marisa Lee,

Regional Hunter Education Coordinator for the Division of Wildlife and

Freshwater Fisheries, explains why shooting with both eyes open is the

correct method whether shooting at moving or stationary targets.

SOG’s “Are You The Gunny?” Contest

SOG’s “Are You The Gunny?” Contest

SOG Knives

Lynnwood, Washington --(Ammoland.com)- Do mmoLand readers

have the grit, guts and gall to show their best impersonation of the one

and only Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey, a.k.a. The Gunny, to the

world?

On Wednesday, December 8th, SOG Specialty Knives and Tools will kick

off the “Are You The Gunny?” contest. Participants will be asked to

videotape and upload their best Gunny impression to SOG’s Facebook

page (www.facebook.com/SOGKnivesAndTools).

The best impression will be selected with a winner and guest flown to Las

Vegas for the 2011 Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show and

Conference. Besides gaining access to the show as a guest of SOG, the

winner will be invited to a special cocktail party on the first night to meet

The Gunny himself.

Full entry information and contest rules will be posted on the SOG

Facebook page on Wednesday, along with a special video message from

The Gunny. I have also included information below on some of the

brand-new products SOG will be introducing at the 2011 SHOT Show.

After years as a drill instructor in the U.S. Marine Corps, R. Lee Ermey

became widely known for his Academy Award-nominated performance

in Full Metal Jacket as well as roles in Apocalypse Now, the Toy Story

trilogy, and the History Channel series Lock N’ Load With R. Lee Ermey.

Ermey is a spokesperson for SOG (www.sogknives.com), the favored

brand for specialty knives and tools by the military, law enforcement,

industrial tradesmen and outdoorsmen worldwide.

The SHOT Show is the world’s largest and most comprehensive trade

show for professionals involved with the shooting sports and hunting

industries, and is the premier showcase of combined firearms,

ammunition, outdoor apparel, optics and more. It will be held at the

Sands Expo & Convention Center from January 18-21. Full information

can be found at www.shotshow.org.

• Double Headed Axe (F12-N)

• The SOG Double Headed Axe lets you get medieval when you work.

Based on the construction and durability of the world renowned

Tomahawk, but with a heavier two edged head, this formidable axe

can shape, split and cut wood, harvest timber, as well as be used in

military/LE operations for breaching, extraction, etc. It is big

enough to exert significant power with a two-handed grip but light

enough to use with a single hand.

• FastHawk (F06T-N)

• The SOG FastHawk is faster, lighter, more agile, and easier to carry

than its sibling the Tactical Tomahawk. This is not to say it is not

still powerful, versatile, and functional. It is a tool that will be used

for much more than you might anticipate. Chopping, breaking,

cutting, hammering, piercing, digging, prying, pounding shaving,

notching, opening and throwing are all capabilities well within the

FastHawk’s reach.

• Forge (FG01-L)

• The SOG Forge evokes a period in Japanese history when honor

was the most highly coveted virtue; It was a time when everything

was handmade with meticulous care. A good knife or sword was

meant to last for life- and as such, The Forge is built using both

traditional and modern methods. It projects a sense of elegance

and sophistication at the same time- The VG-10 san mai blade is

hammer forged creating the distinctive pattern and the handle is

precisely fitted using a stepped topo design for exemplary balance

and feel. And because so detail is overlooked, the sheath is as good

as the knife- crafted in Japan from thick rich leather, with a splash

design stitched into it’s face. A beautiful collectors item.

• Flash II Tanto (FSAT-98)

• The Flash II Tanto has got to be one of the coolest knives we’ve

ever seen. Forget its wicked-quick blade access, that it handles like

a race car on rails, or that it locks up like Alcatraz. It just looks and

feels extraordinary. The Flash family of knives feature SOG

Assisted Technology ™ (S.A.T.), which employs a powerful piston

lock that is easily released with a sliding button.

• The Flash II Tanto (Partially Serrated) comes standard with glass-

reinforced Zytel™ handle and partially serrated edge, Satin

finished tanto blade. All Flash knives come standard with SOG’s

patent pending, reversible bayonet mounted clip that ensures the

lowest, most discreet carry possible. We also had the foresight to

incorporate an additional safety lock that gives added security

when the blade is closed.

About:

SOG was an acronym which stood for Studies and Observations Group.

Sanctioned to develop and purchase their own equipment, SOG created

several knives for use in one of the harshest environments in the world.

It was in the spirit of this elite group, and the quality equipment they

commissioned, that SOG Specialty Knives and Tools was founded in

1986 by Spencer Frazer. Visit: www.sogknives.com

Hunting And TrappingOpportunities For WinterDEC 08, 2010 11:02A.M.

Pennsylvania Hunting And Trapping Opportunities For

Winter

Pennsylvania Game Commission

HARRISBURG, PA --(Ammoland.com)- Pennsylvania Game

Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe reminds hunters and

trappers they still have a mixed bag of seasons from which to choose

after the statewide firearms deer season concludes on Saturday, Dec. 11.

They include seasons for deer, snowshoe hare, ruffed grouse, squirrel,

cottontail, pheasant, coyote, fisher, bobcat, beaver and other furbearers,

crows, doves and waterfowl.

The statewide late archery and flintlock muzzleloader deer seasons run

concurrently from Dec. 27 to Jan. 15.

In Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) 2B, 5C and 5D, the late archery

and late flintlock seasons run from Dec. 27-Jan. 29. In addition, all

hunters with WMU 2B 5C or 5D antlerless deer licenses can use any legal

sporting arm to harvest antlerless deer from Dec. 27-Jan. 29.

The small game seasons are as follows: squirrel, Dec. 13-23 and Dec. 27

to Feb. 5; ruffed grouse, Dec. 13-23 and Dec. 27 to Jan. 22; rabbit, Dec.

13-23 and Dec. 27 to Feb. 26; and snowshoe hare, Dec. 27-Jan. 1. In

addition, pheasants (males and females) will be open from Dec. 13-23

and Dec. 27 to Feb. 5, in WMUs 1A, 1B, 2D, 2E, 2F, 2G, 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D,

4A, 4B, 4D, 5C and 5D.

There is no pheasant hunting in the four Wild Pheasant Recovery Areas

(see pages 22-23 of the 2010-11 Digest). Additionally, there is no dog

training of any manner or small game hunting from the first Sunday in

February through July 31 in the four WPRAs.

Hunters who participate in any of these seasons must have a general

hunting license, which provides Pennsylvania hunting privileges through

June 30. Depending on the deer season hunters are participating in, they

also must meet additional licensing and fluorescent orange

requirements.

All antlerless deer taken by hunters in the late archery and special

regulations area antlerless seasons must be tagged with an unused

WMU-specific antlerless deer license harvest tag or a Deer Management

Assistance Program (DMAP) antlerless deer permit harvest tag.

Flintlock muzzleloader season participants may harvest an antlerless

deer with either a WMU-specific or DMAP-specific antlerless deer

license/permit or general hunting license deer harvest tag. Buck hunting

in the late seasons is governed by antler restrictions and limited to only

bowhunters and flintlock muzzleloader hunters who possess an unused

general hunting license deer harvest tag.

During the flintlock season, only single-barrel long-guns .44 caliber or

larger and flintlock handguns .50 caliber or larger with a flintlock

ignition system are permitted. The firearm must be an original or

reproduction of a gun used prior to 1800. Peep sights and fiber-optic

inserts are permitted, as well as iron, open “V” or notched sights. A

flintlock ignition system consists of a hammer containing a naturally-

occurring stone which is spring-propelled onto an iron or steel frizzen,

which, in turn, creates sparks to ignite the gunpowder. Flintlock

muzzleloader hunters may use “any single projectile” ammunition.

Hunters are reminded that firearms limitations for special regulations

counties – Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and

Philadelphia – remain in effect for the extended antlerless season in

WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D. Those restrictions do not apply to those portions

of Beaver, Berks, Butler, Lehigh, Northampton, Washington and

Westmoreland counties contained in WMUs 2B and 5C, where firearms

deer hunters may choose to use a rifle, shotgun or crossbow.

Hunters using archery or muzzleloader licenses, and hunting with those

special sporting arms, are not required to wear fluorescent orange

clothing while afield, but are encouraged to do so where the seasons

overlap with late season firearms deer hunters. Special regulations area

hunters must wear 250 square inches of fluorescent orange clothing,

unless they possess an archery or muzzleloader license and are hunting

with a bow, flintlock or crossbow.

Those hunting in the late seasons also may take coyotes with either a

general hunting license or a furtaker license, 24 hours a day, from July 1-

June 30, including Sundays, as per specifics listed on page 77 of the

2010-11 Hunting and Trapping Digest. The bag limit is unlimited, and

hunters may use electronic calls and can pursue coyotes without wearing

fluorescent orange in most instances. Also, trappers can take an

unlimited number of coyotes until Feb. 20.

Trappers also may use cable restraints for foxes and coyotes from Dec.

26 through Feb. 20. In order to participate in this season, trappers must

have passed a mandatory cable restraint certification program, which

was developed and implemented with the assistance of the Pennsylvania

Trappers Association.

Furbearer hunting seasons continuing through the winter months,

include: red and gray foxes, until Feb. 19, including Sundays; raccoons,

until Feb. 19; bobcats, for those with special permits, from Dec. 18-Jan.

9; and skunks, opossums and weasels, until June 30 (certain restrictions

apply during the spring gobbler season, so please refer to page 77 of the

2010-11 Digest).

Furbearer trapping seasons include: beavers, Dec. 26-March 31 (bag

limits depend on WMU, which is outlined on page 77 of the 2010-11

Digest); minks and muskrats, until Jan. 9; raccoons, skunks, opossums,

foxes and weasels, until Feb. 20; fishers, for those with special permits,

from Dec. 18-23; and bobcats, for those with special permits, from Dec.

18-Jan. 9.

“Trappers seeking new locations to place sets are encouraged to contact

any of the agency’s six region offices for contact information for

landowners looking for relief from nuisance beavers,” Roe said. He also

recommended trappers review the various “Field Officer Game

Forecasts” available online (www.pgc.state.pa.us).

Crows may be hunted on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until April 10.

Dove hunters also will have late season opportunities when dove season

reopens Dec. 27-Jan. 1. Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise

to sunset, and the daily limit is 15.

Waterfowl hunters have plenty of hunting opportunities to pursue from

December into March. Hunters can take Canada geese and white-fronted

geese during the following upcoming seasons: Atlantic Population Zone,

Dec. 21-Jan. 29; Southern James Bay Canada Goose Hunting Zone, Dec.

13-Jan. 26; and Resident Canada Goose Zone, from Dec. 18-Feb. 19.

Statewide snow goose season runs until Feb. 19, after which the

conservation season runs from Feb. 19 through April 16. In addition to

all required licenses, conservation season snow goose hunters must

obtain a free permit from the Game Commission website. Snow goose

conservation hunters also may use electronic calls and decoys, as well as

hunt from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

Ducks, sea ducks, coots and mergansers may be hunted in the Lake Erie

Zone until Jan. 1; in the North Zone, until Jan. 4; in the Northwest Zone,

until Dec. 30; and in the South Zone until Jan. 17.

For details on waterfowl bag limits in each of the zones, please consult

the Pennsylvania 2010-11 Guide to Migratory Game Bird Hunting, which

is available on the agency’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) by clicking on

the “Migratory Game Bird” in the “Quick Clicks” box in the right-hand

column of the homepage.

In addition to a regular Pennsylvania hunting license, persons 16 and

older must have a Federal Migratory Bird and Conservation Stamp,

commonly referred to as a “Duck Stamp” to hunt waterfowl. Regardless

of age, hunters also must have a Pennsylvania Migratory Game Bird

License to hunt waterfowl and other migratory birds, including doves,

woodcock, coots, moorhens, rails and snipe. All migratory game bird

hunters in the United States are required to complete a Harvest

Information Program survey when they purchase a state migratory game

bird license. The survey information is then forwarded to the USFWS.

Grouse Book Authors To Donate Portion Of Their Sales To

Ruffed Grouse Society

Special holiday promotion will be used to benefit wildlife habitat.

Ruffed Grouse Society

Pennsylvania --(Ammoland.com)- The authors of the new book

“Serious Grouse Hunting, Book 1″ and the Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS)

have announced details of a special promotion, in which a portion of the

sale of each book will be donated to the RGS.

“Serious Grouse Hunting, Book 1″ is the first major book on ruffed

grouse hunting to be released in more than a decade, and reflects the

current status of “serious” hunting information using a heavy emphasis

on how-to-hunt tips and using newer technologies such as Google Earth

to help find grouse covers.

Co-authors Jay Kumar and Brendan Haines, who are both RGS

members, said the decision to donate a portion of the book’s proceeds to

the RGS was an easy one.

“The RGS is the only organization working tirelessly to

increase grouse and woodcock habitat, and success there

helps many other forest species,” Kumar said. “Anyone who

hunts grouse should know just how important RGS’s work is.

This is the least we can do to support that work.”

“Jay and Brendan initially gave us space in the book to

promote our mission and our upcoming 50th Anniversary.

That was generous of them at the time and their generosity

continues with this special promotion,” said RGS President

and CEO Mike Zagata.

“I have read the book and it does contain a lot of truly new

information about hunting this magnificent bird, including

the use of the Internet for finding potential grouse covers. I

sincerely hope RGS members and other grouse hunters will

put this book on their holiday gift and winter reading lists,

and thereby support the RGS,” Zagata continued.

Serious Grouse Hunting: Book 1 - Ruffed Grouse Hunting Tips Revealed

Available for $34.95 (includes $5 s/h) “Serious Grouse Hunting, Book 1″

can be ordered directly at www.SeriousBirdHunting.com, or at

amazon.com. The book has received rave reviews from readers and

multiple newspapers, including the New York Post which called it “a

must-read.”

Established in 1961, the Ruffed Grouse Society is the one international

wildlife conservation organization dedicated to promoting conditions

suitable for ruffed grouse, American woodcock and related wildlife to

sustain our sport hunting tradition and outdoor heritage.

Recognized by Charity Navigator as a four-star not-for-profit

organization, information on the RGS, its mission, management projects

and membership can be found on the web at:

LAPD & ATF Investigation IntoIllegal Gun sales Leads toIndictments on FederalWeapons ChargesDEC 08, 2010 09:15A.M.

Joint LAPD – ATF Investigation Into Illegal Gun sales Leads to

Indictment of Nine on Federal Weapons Charges

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Ammoland.com)- Federal and local authorities

this morning arrested five defendants who were named by a federal

grand jury in a 19—count indictment that alleges illegal firearms sales

and drug trafficking offenses.

Two of the nine defendants named in the indictment were already in

state custody, and authorities continue to search for one fugitive. An

investigation is continuing into the identity of the ninth defendant

named in the indictment.

The indictment, which was returned on September 28, outlines a series

of firearms transactions in which guns — including machine guns,

sawed—off shotguns and assault rifles — were sold to undercover

operatives from April 2009 through June 2010.

During this morning’s operation, ATF agents and LAPDofficers seized 12

firearms, including seven handguns and one machine gun, and at least

five pounds of marijuana. With this morning’s seizures, this investigation

has resulted in a total of 35 firearms being taken off the streets.

In addition to the defendants arrested in the federal case, authorities this

morning arrested five suspects who are expected to be prosecuted by the

Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

“One of ATF’s strategies for preventing violent crime is to

disrupt and dismantle underground firearms trafficking

pipelines and take down those responsible for supplying

violent offenders with crime guns,” said John A. Torres,

Special Agent in Charge, ATF Los Angeles Field Division.

“This investigation shows that ATF is at the frontline in

combating violent crime through partnerships with fellow law

enforcement agencies. ATF will continue to seek out and

eradicate those threatening the safety of our communities.”

“As Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, I have been

committed to working closely with our federal partners,”

said;LAPD Chief Charlie Beck.

“This morning, in a joint task force with our ATF partners,

detectives from LAPD”Gang and Narcotics Division executed

a federal warrant which targeted illegal gun trafficking. I am

very pleased with the results of today’s operation. I will

continue my commitment in our fight to reduce crime in our

communities and to keeping these dangerous weapons off the

streets.

The nine defendants named in the indictment, five of whom

were arrested this morning, are:

• Oswaldo Ramirez, 29, of Lakewood, an illegal alien who allegedly

arranged and was present at most of the firearms transactions;

• Victor Huerta, 20, of Paramount, who allegedly participated in

several of the gun transactions;

• Ernesto Figueroa Chavez, 21, of La Puente, an illegal alien who

allegedly supplied the gun in three transactions prior to being

deported to Mexico in October;

• Robert Francis Evangelista, 32, of Montebello, who was allegedly

involved in seven firearms transactions;

• Sergio Herrera, 30, of South Gate, who allegedly sold one firearm;

• Ivan Reyes, 34, who is a fugitive currently being sought by

authorities for allegedly selling one firearm and being involved in a

narcotics transaction;

• Robert Michael Roybal, 23, of El Sereno, who allegedly was

involved in two firearms transactions and is currently in state

custody;

• Ramon Lopez, 33, of South Los Angeles, who allegedly was

involved in one gun transaction and is currently in state custody;

and

• a ninth defendant who is charged with participating in one gun

transaction and is the subject of an ongoing investigation into his

identity

The 19-count indictment specifically alleges conspiracy (statutory

maximum penalty of five years in federal prison), engaging in the

business of dealing in firearms without a license (five years maximum),

alien in possession of a firearm and/or ammunition (10 years

maximum), felon in possession of a firearm and/or ammunition (10

years maximum), sale of a firearm to a prohibited person (10 years

maximum), possession of an unregistered firearm (10 years maximum),

illegal alien found in the United States following deportation (two years

maximum); conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine (20 years

maximum), and distribution of methamphetamine (20 years maximum).

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a

crime. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in

court. The investigation that led to the indictment and today’s arrests

was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and

Explosives and the Los Angeles Police Department.
