Reading aloud has never been such a pleasure!

8 Children‘s Book

Papa and Micky, father and son – these two are a very special team. Together they master life in a happy, topsy-turvy style. One day they inherit a small house, which comes with a whole sack full of dreams…

No, not only Micky and Papa are moving into Casa Rosa, the house they just inherited from Aunt Rosy… Lots of pests slip into the new home with the boxes of household goods and invade Micky’s dreams – clumsy burglars, shaggy barbar-ians, a huge monster man, a bad-tempered sher-iff… Lots of mischief-makers that wake Micky in the night and keep Papa busy.Britta Nonnast tells ten tales of Micky’s everyday enemies and anxieties and how he overcomes them with imagination and the craftiness of a child with Papa at his side. These are wonder-ful stories that will boost morale and spark the desire to go on adventures – everyday scenes told in a loving way for reading aloud, offering the occasion for many interesting conversations.

Britta Nonnast, born in 1970, is an economist and worked as editorial journalist for several years. For a long time, the free journalist has realized that she prefers books, reading and beautiful stories to fi gures and the stock market. Micky, Papa and a House Full of Dreams is her fi rst children‘s book. Together with her family Britta Nonnast lives in Potsdam.

Silver fever is rampant in the Wild West and no one is spared. Dave’s older brother also hopes to become rich and sends Dave to Virginia City to buy shares in a silver mine for him. But the stage-coach is held up by robbers who take all the pas-sengers’ valuables. Together they end up in Goliath, an isolated town in the middle of the prairie, where everyone is crazy about silver. They say that in one mine, even gems drip down from the ceiling! Something is strange, though – the gem that allegedly came from the silver mine looks exactly like the gem from Penny Dreadful’s brooch… Have the investors been cheated? »Salah Naoura tells a warm, humorous sum-mer tale in a concise manner and with an in-side view of the German-Finnish soul. It is a miracle that Matti and his parents survive all their fi b-telling unscathed. Apparently strong families survive rough stories.« Explanation of the jury for the Peter-Härtling Prize

Matti is 11 years old and dreams of a family va-cation in his father’s native country, Finnland. He manages to get what he wants by telling a whopping lie. But once they get there, Matti, his younger brother Sami and his parents fi nd themselves without a place to stay, no money and no car in the middle of Finnish wasteland. Only a miracle can save them – or Uncle Jus-si, who has been struggling to compete with Matti’s father his whole life. A summer novel for children that stands out for its wonderful pun... And that is not even telling a lie...

At age 16, Leon is already a professional. He is one of the top deep-sea divers who can move about freely even 3,000 ft. under the sea. Together with Lucy, an intelli-gent female octopus, Leon searches for natural resources on the sea fl oor. The deep sea is his home, much more familiar to him than »up there«. But then the sea seems to go crazy. On the bottom »death zones« start to spread and the deep-sea inhabitants start to seek refuge above. Panic breaks out on shore. Leon and Lucy discover a fatal experiment during a forbidden dive – and suddenly they are on a powerful corporate group’s hit list. Carima, a young tourist from »up there«, turns out to be Leon’s only ally …

»Enthralling, tense and wonderfully pictorial!« Isabel Abedi on Call of the Deep

»I think this book is fantastic. It could become a bestseller. Leon’s affi nity for the sea is absolutely wonderful – you can really feel the mysterious power it has over him. It is great the way it alternates between Leon’s and Carina’s perspectives. It is also cool that it is not only fi ction, although it is set in the future. The diving suits, for example, are already being developed. This novel is very realistic.« Judith, age 16

Oliver Bowel is 17. His life is screwed up, up-side down. No wonder, with a last name like Bowel. His name is more or less a prophecy. But Jana is able to melt the ice. She has to. Gabi Kreslehner’s new novel is as bitter and sweet as life itself.

Bowel is a block of ice and no one can get near him, not even Uncle Kurt or Muscat, who often sits with him on the banks of the river. Neither can Jana. Jana loves Bowel. But Bowel doesn’t love Jana. Bowel doesn’t love anybody. But when the police turn up, everything comes to the surface again. What happened back then, more than 1,000 days ago, when his sister tragically disappeared and his mother started to drink and his whole life fell apart. Bowel needs this whole, long summer to to fi nally start to talk. At some point, when Bowel is sitting on a hill with Jana and the sky turns red, it is the beginning of the end. »Maybe Jana can make miracles come true, he thinks. Who knows what lies ahead with this Hitler. I am only a poor woman, I cannot protect you. You go, do you understand?«

The population is increa-sing, natural resources are getting more and

more scarce – how is our world going to look in the year 2050? How are we going to live, work and get around in 40 years? All over the world researchers, politicians, architects, engineers and scientists are working on these questions – for the future began a while ago.

Ulrich Eberl invites young readers to visit the cen-ters where specialists have long begun to deal with tomorrow’s world – whether it be alternative forms of energy, technological innovations, environ-mental issues, mobility or the question of health development. What are the researchers working on at the moment and what can we learn from it for our future? Many things are indeed possible to predict – you just have to ask the right people. But this book not only shows what the current state of research and innovation have to present, but also how fascinating and fun science can be. Ulrich Eberl sparks curiousity among his readers about tomorrow’s world and urges them to take part in

the creation and discovery of the future.

This book covers:✹ Energy for tomorrow – a new era begins ✹ The pioneers of the green revolution ✹ Don’t let the greenhouse gas escape ✹ The city with zero emissions ✹ Power plant in the basement, a sky of light on the ceiling ✹ Living safely in the global village ✹ Who is going to do tomorrow’s work? ✹ 3-D games and real life ✹ A future without books? ✹ Growing old and staying healthy – a utopian dream?

Our body performs sensational feats all day long – some of which we are aware of, and others that we don’t even register. When taking a closer look, there are many fascina-ting questions to be answered.

Stretching is the fi rst thing most of us do when we get up in the morning. But why? Because our muscles get stiff and blood cannot circulate properly while we are asleep. Stretching stimula-tes oxygen transport, also to the brain, resulting in making us feel more awake. Using the twins Leonie and Daniel, age 12, as an example, Jür-gen Brater takes us through a normal day with entertaining, knowledgable and humorous ex-planations of what goes on in the bodies of girls and boys at different times of the day. Readers are nimbly guided through answers to questions and explanations for sometimes seemingly sim-ple things all about the body. Youngsters (but adults as well!) learn things they always wanted to know – or sometimes just take for granted.

Jürgen Brater, born in 1948, worked as a doctor with his own offi ce. He has been teaching young doc-tors and writing specialist literature as well as popular medical books for adults since the 1990s. He has written Lexikon der rätselhaften Körpervorgänge/The Encyclopedia of Mysterious Procedures in the Human Body and Wir sind Neandertaler/We are Neanderthals among other books.

✹ Why do we wake up in the morning? ✹ Why do we have to go to the bathroom fi rst thing in the morning? ✹ Why do we have pubic hair? ✹ Why do girls get colder faster than boys? ✹ Why do we sometimes make mistakes when talking? ✹ Why do we raise our eyebrows when we are surprised? ✹ Why do we open our mouths when we want to hear something better or that is quiet? ✹ Why do we scratch ourselves when it itches?
