A Stage for the Best in the World
Winter 2014 I 0844 338 5000 I birminghamhippodrome.com
WELCOMEWe hope that by inviting performing companies not just from our own country but from around the world to Birmingham we can create the most exciting, varied and highest-quality programme available.
So, alongside many home-grown highlights this season is one of my favourite international companies, Cirque Éloize from Quebec. They bring amazing skills from the world of circus to create wonderful theatre shows, full of character and drama. No easy feat but, as the glorious Cirkopolis (p13) will show, truly memorable when it works. I encourage you to try it out. Tickets are kept at a reasonable level with some discounted rates for families and groups to introduce you to this great company.
We also have a run of recent West End blockbusters, most visiting for the first time over a number of weeks giving you plenty of opportunity to catch the best of the West End in Birmingham. These include the wonderfully moving and extraordinary The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (p20) from the National Theatre directed by one of the creators of the international hit War Horse. It is a visual and emotional rollercoaster and really shouldn’t be missed.
We’re delighted that this season David Bintley celebrates twenty years as Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2015 and creates a new work, The King Dances (p23) to go alongside some of his established favourites.
Whatever part of our programme you may choose to attend, our aim is to provide you with the very best possible experience of theatre and we will do our utmost to fulfil that promise every time you visit us.
We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Wed 7 – Sat 17 Jan THE PATRICK CENTRE
Based on the lost 1928 supernatural murder-mystery novel, The Frozen Scream tells the chilling tale of a group who find themselves stranded at an abandoned lodge in the depths of winter. Forced to entertain themselves, they begin to tell the tale of Jack Frost, the most terrifying of the Frost Giants. But as the story takes a shocking twist, they discover they should have heeded the early warnings to ‘beware the ice’.
Surrounded by mystery and intrigue, the original novel was quick to receive critical acclaim but fell out of favour when a series of mysterious deaths led to the belief that the novel was cursed. Undeterred by these theories, Olivier-award winning entertainer Christopher Green (Tina C, Ida Barr, Office Party) and one of the UK’s best-selling novelists, Sarah Waters (Tipping the Velvet, The Little Stranger) bring this largely unread work to the stage in an adaptation that will send seriously spooky - and unexpected - shivers down your spine this winter. Is everything as it seems?

When eccentric toymaker Dr Coppélius leaves his greatest creation, the doll Coppélia, on his workshop balcony she’s soon causing quite a stir in the village. Lovers Franz and Swanilda both want to find out what is going on, but things are even stranger than they seem. With a wild mix of abracadabra, comic chaos is unleashed as Dr Coppélius tries to bring Coppélia to life and Swanilda tries to stop him.
A timeless classic from the golden age of classical ballet, Coppélia, with its tuneful, romantic music, stands alongside such classics as Swan Lake and as one of the great works of the 19th century.

Wed 17 - Sat 20 JunMarking Director David Bintley’s 20th year with Birmingham Royal Ballet, this programme contrasts his acclaimed Carmina burana from 1995 with the world premiere of his latest work, The King Dances.
In 1653 the 14-year-old Louis XIV of France danced the role of Apollo the sun god in Le Ballet de la nuit, and earned himself forever the soubriquet the Sun King. In The King Dances, David Bintley re-imagines the very beginnings of ballet, when men were quite literally, the kings of dance.
Carmina burana, the first ballet Bintley created for the Company as Director, is a thrilling, large-scale production, danced to Carl Orff’s dramatic and emotionally charged choral music, for which members of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia are joined by Birmingham’s Ex Cathedra. Inspired by the satirical writings of medieval priests, Orff’s rousing choral tour de force is a feast in its own right. Bintley’s breathtaking choreography ensures an unforgettable experience that has been astonishing and delighting audiences for nearly 20 years.

A humorous trip through time to learn valuable lessons in love.
Count Guiccioli’s infidelities cause marital strife between him and his wife and threaten both their anniversary celebration and the burgeoning love between Amynta and Sylvia, their servants. It is left to the God of Love, Eros (in disguise as a gardener), to reconcile their differences as he takes them, and us, back to the age of mythical Rome in order to teach them all a lesson about Love.
David Bintley’s time-hopping comedy features music by Léo Delibes, the composer of Coppélia (see p7), and a colourful cast of Gods and Goddesses, slave girls and pirates. Tchaikovsky wrote of Delibes’ score, that his own music for Swan Lake was ‘poor stuff’ in comparison.
“ Bintley has a merry eye and a command of classical dance-making that sits delightfully on his score... Hurrah for Bintley and his cast” THE FINANCIAL TIMES
“ A gorgeous and important work... Bintley’s dance-making is a sophisticated flow that is a pure joy to watch... a delight from start to finish” THE SUNDAY EXPRESS

Tue 30 Jun - Sat 4 Jul As refreshing and thrilling as the day it was written, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA! is the original feel-good musical. From the minute the rugged cowboy Curly steps on to the stage singing Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ we know that all will be right with the world. This colourful production overflows with well-known songs such as I’m Just a Girl Who Cain’t Say No, Surrey With a Fringe on Top, Kansas City, People Will Say We’re in Love and, of course, the rousing title song itself!
Celebrating the vigour of America’s pioneering spirit with classic tunes and boot-stomping dances, we follow Curly and the girl of his dreams, Laurey, as they travel down love’s highway on an extremely bumpy surrey ride.
From the award-winning producers of The King & I and Fiddler on the Roof this brand new production starring Belinda Lang as Aunt Eller and Gary Wilmot as Ali Hakim is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh. It features a large cast and chorus as well as a live orchestra, bringing you romance, excitement and a score filled with sunshine.

Make a donation, make a difference...When you book a ticket by phone, in person or online, you’ll be asked for a £2 donation towards our Hippodrome Plus programme. Let us know if this qualifies for Gift Aid and
we could add 50p more. The Arts Council’s Catalyst scheme may also match your donation, so your support can really add up, and all at no extra cost to you. Thank you.
Extraordinary PerformancesWhether out and about in Southside or in our Patrick Centre studio, there’s always something different on offer. Dare you try The Frozen Scream (p4) in January?
Learning for EveryoneIn schools, colleges and here at the theatre, peoples of all ages and backgrounds participate in a range of life-changing projects. Don’t miss the curtain raiser performances at Edward Scissorhands (p5).
Access all AreasOur second Relaxed Performance at Pantomime (p2)? Oh, yes it is. Anyone with special needs is welcome. And visually or hearing-impaired patrons can enjoy regular audio-described, sign-language or captioned performances all year.
If you’re a teacher or in a community group with a
project in mind please get in touch: [email protected]
If you’d like to support our projects, let’s work together: [email protected]
