Leadership Workshop
The 5Ps in Humor:
TIPS
These workshops were staged by District 17 and gave
many of our members the opportunity to learn new
skills which will benefit them in their Toastmasters
journey as well as their every day life. It was wonderful
to see so many Canning Vale members attend all of
these workshops.
After our District Council Meeting, we were privileged
to hear our Region Advisor, Steve Bullock, from New
Zealand tell us how District 72 in New Zealand have the highest ratio of Toastmaster
members per capita of population in the world.

The Icebreaker
Fabulous speech debut at CVTM from some of our new members:
Steve told us his tongue twister talent in “Irish Wristwatch”
Lionel shared with us his action packed “World of Contradiction”.
Vanessa told us what happened when she said ’Never!’ in “Never Say Never”.
Advanced Speeches—Special Occasion
By André Sequeira ACS CL
When I have to give a project speech, I
always like to choose a topical item for two
reasons. Firstly, it generates interest for
your audience and secondly it makes it
more realistic and meaningful for you as
the speaker. So when I had to give an
Advanced Speech from the Special
Occasion Speeches Manual with the
project, Speaking in Praise, I seized the
opportunity to speak about my Mum,
Joyce, who is currently visiting from India and enjoys attending Canning Vale
Toastmasters. Even though it sometimes feels awkward praising someone, it is one
of life’s greatest pleasures – to openly share your love and respect for another
person, especially in their presence. My Mum was taken completely by surprise as
she did not know that I was speaking that day or even the subject. However, the
icing on the cake for me, was the tremendous feedback I got from everyone present
that night. It was summed up beautifully when one of the members said, “André, I
have not even spoken to your Mum and yet I like her”. Thank-you Toastmasters for
giving me the platform and the privilege of honouring my Mum, a very special
person in my life.

What do you like best about Canning Vale
Toastmasters?
I love the family atmosphere. Everyone is so friendly
and supportive. I can honestly say every step I have
taken towards becoming a better public speaker is
because of the positive influences and support from
all Canning Vale members.
What do you do for a living?
I am a student, but a full time crazy cat lady.
How has Toastmasters helped you in your
job?
This semester there was an optional presentation for
a unit I was studying, in the past I would have 100%
turned down the opportunity. However this semester
I took the chance and ended up getting a distinction
for it! I would never have thought this would have
happened a year ago, but a lot can happen with
toastmasters training!
What’s next for you in Toastmasters?
I hope to finally finish my CC manual. I have been
progressing slowly and steadily, but I'm nearly there!
Carey-Ann Brett
Why did you join Toastmasters?
I was in my fifth year of law school and I still
had a pronounced fear of public speaking. I
realised that in order to succeed in any future
career I would have to overcome this fear.
Thankfully I came across toastmasters!
How long have you been a member?
I have been a member since December 2012.
