YEAR OF GENEROCITY
St. Peter Parish Prayer
Lord, thank you for the rich history you have
bestowed on our family of St. Peter in Kirkwood.
Blessed by your grace, we ask that you be present
in our parish today. Guide us as we celebrate our
gifts through worship, education and loving service.
Holy Spirit, create within us a vision for the future that
we live, witness and proclaim the good news of Christ.
Amen

The Epiphany of the Lord January 8, 2017
Bless Your Door On Epiphany…
The gospel tells us that the magi found Christ “on entering the
house.” The door to your home is a holy threshold. You can
bless those who come in and go out by inscribing above the door
in chalk thus “20 + C + M+ B+ 17.” Tradition tells us that the
letters for the names of the magi: Caspar, Melchior, and
Balthasar. The current year numbers surrounds the letters.
Adolph Adam points out that it may also mean “Christus
mansionem benedicat” or “May Christ bless this dwelling.” It is
appropriate to bless your door in January - janua means “door”
and the first month is the door to the new year.
After inscribing the doorway, say this prayer:
“God of Bethlehem and Cana, God of Jordan’s leaping
waters, in baptism you bring us into your family.
You wed us and embrace us as your beloved.
May we fill this place with kindness to one another, with
hospitality to guests, and with abundant care for every stranger.
By the gentle light of a star, guide home all who seek you
on paths of faith, hope, and love.
Then we will join the angels in proclaiming your praise:
Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and forever.
Amen”
Then sing a Christmas carol.
Sun From Cloud… The twelfth day of Christmas is the solemn feast of the Epiphany,
January 6th (traditional day) or on this liturgical calendar year,
Epiphany is today, Sunday, January 8th. In the United States, the
celebration of the Epiphany is transferred to a Sunday so that all
may celebrate it. The word epiphany comes from the Greek and
means “revelation,” and so we celebrate the revelation of Christ
to the magi, who were gentiles and did not belong to the people of
Israel or the Hebrews.
Learn this Appalachian folk song in honor of the star that guided
the magi to the Christ child. Find out if anyone you know is
familiar with it and could teach it to you. (Take the time!) Or
check a local music store’s folk section. (If that fails, try
shopping around on the internet.) The words are:
Bright mornin’ star’s arisin’
Bright mornin’ star’s arisin’
Bright mornin’ star’s arisin’
Day is breakin’ in my soul.
The daily prayer of the Orthodox churches gives us these lovely
verses for the solemn feast of the Epiphany:
“The magi who had been led on their way by a divine
star stood before you in wonder at your marvelous birth;
and bearing gifts they see the sun who rose from the
virgin cloud.
Let the people who sat in darkness see shining forth the
light that knows no evening,
him whom the stars once manifested to the fire-
worshipping Persian kings.”
Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and forever!
From Bethlehem to Jordan… The feast of the Baptism of the Lord is the last day of the
Christmas season. This year the feast occurs this Monday,
January 9th. At daily prayer this day, the Orthodox churches pray:
“Let us assemble in spirit, O faithful, at the streams of the Jordan
that we might behold a great and mighty wonder.
We shall see the Creator of all made manifest as he comes to be
baptized.
Let us pass, O faithful, from Bethlehem to Jordan. For behold,
the light which came into the darkness there begins to overcome
the night.”
Find out the date of your baptism. Ask a relative, or write to the
parish that baptized you. Write the date on the new calendar.
Celebrate the anniversary this year by participating in the
Eucharist. Spend some time reflecting on your Christian mission
– your part in spreading God’s love.
When Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water and heard a
heavenly voice say, “You are my beloved; with you I am well
pleased.” Listen for this voice today whenever you “come out of
the water” – the shower, the snow or rain, the swimming pool, the
sudsy kitchen sink. Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and
forever! Alleluia! Amen!
Missing Person Report:
I am sorry to report that a theft has occurred in our outside crib
scene this year.
At some point the week after Christmas some misguided soul felt
the need to take our manger and baby Jesus from the outside
Nativity scene on Argonne Drive. I can remember at least six
years ago or so the same manger and baby Jesus were taken from
our outside Nativity set. I wrote about it in my bulletin article at
the time. Miraculously and wonderfully it suddenly re-appeared
before the end of the Christmas Season that year. Hopefully, the
same thing will happen again this year. We can only hope!
How sad that someone feels a need to do such a thing! It
certainly it is not as awful as the fire that occurred recently at St.
Monica church in Creve Coeur. It seems that an arsonist
deliberately set their crib scene on fire in the church. That was
horrendous! While not on a par with a that senseless act, still, the
taking of sacred objects, meant for religious devotion and on holy
ground, is disrespectful and shameful and very wrong.
Let us all hope that whoever is responsible for this will rethink
their motives and their behavior, repent, and return the manger
and the baby Jesus back to us. Again, we can only hope!
Happy New Year everyone! And…I’ll see you in church!
Msgr. Jack

lamp. On each candle will be written the name of one of those buried from St. Peter during this last year. We
will communicate in the bulletin each week the upcoming dedications.
For January, here are the scheduled dedications:
January 9 Joseph W. Weyerich
January 16 James Dirnberger
January 23 Margaret Ann Platt
January 30 Lorraine L. May
Please remember these, and all our faithful departed, in your prayers.

ST. PETER GUIDEBOOK & DIRECTORY All Parish families should have received the brand-new Guide-
Book & Directory in your mailbox last week. If you have joined
the parish since we began working on this book or did not receive
one, please feel free to stop by the parish office for a copy of this
book. The businesses who advertise in the book helped provide
this service at no cost to our congregation; so we encourage
you to patronize those businesses and to think of them as your
needs arise throughout the year.
If you are interested in advertising your business in the book next
year, contact [email protected] for more information.
Please familiarize yourself with the ministries and organizations
at our church located in the front of the book. An electronic PDF
version of the Guide Section of the book is available to download
to your computer, smart phone, or tablet at your convenience.
To download the Online Guide Section:
1. Visit www.GuideBookPublishing.com/booklist.php.
2. Click on our state followed by our city.
3. Click on the name of our congregation to download the
book.
