For all its diminutive size - it’s only 12 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide - the Sea of Galilee can throw up a fierce storm. Its position at the top end of the Jordan Valley means it is vulnerable to the power of the wind, amplified by the channelling effect of the valley.

That was almost certainly the case when a handful of tough and seasoned fishermen found themselves in the middle of it, tossed about like a cork and quite helpless to do anything about it. What made it worse was the fact that throughout their ordeal, the Creator of the Universe was blissfully asleep in the stern of the boat. When they shook him awake it was not out of politeness and courtesy but sheer panic and terror. They were going to die.

Storms are part of life. They come to batter us at a personal level - illness, financial hardship, marital breakdown and worst of all: bereavement. They can also hit us on a national or international scale. How many of us are being shaken by the mighty hurricanes of economies verging on collapse? Safe as the Bank of England? With the UK alone in debt to the tune of one trillion pounds - perhaps not. With the US indebted to a staggering 16 trillion dollars - we could be standing on the edge of a storm the like of which has never been seen. They all make that storm on Galilee seem like a ripple in a tea cup. And yet the eternal truth of what happened in that little storm is one which can and must be applied to whatever colossus of a storm we or our nations may experience. It is also a truth which perhaps, more than ever, we need to be reflecting in the programmes we are making. That truth is simply that Christ is with is in the storm - even though at times it can appear he is fast asleep and totally unconscious of our need! It is a truth which will enable us to ‘prepare for the storm’ which is this year’s theme for CEVMA as we meet in the not altogether inappropriate setting of the Mediterranean resort of Cullera.

For many of us, what’s happening in Europe and further afield gives cause for deep concern. This year, we want that concern to drive us to the Rock, to the Anchor, to the One who, regardless of appearances, still holds the whole wide world in his hands. And as we do so, we may discover as Habakkuk did, that though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines... yet we will be able to rejoice in the Lord, the God of our salvation.

Prepare for the Storm

This year’s conference and themeFrom 11 – 15 September 2013, Hotel Cullera, in Cullera (near Valencia), Spain, will be the site for the 2013 CEVMA Conference. The conference is an invaluable opportunity for Christians in visual media to meet, network, share ideas, projects and challenges and get spiritually refreshed. The CEVMA Conference always includes a series of Bible Talks aimed at catering to the needs and challenges of media professionals. Each day includes a prayer and worship time too, in order to ‘tank up on grace’ and receive mu-tual encouragement. The theme of this year’s Bible Talks is ‘Prepare for the Storm’. The Bible Speaker is Karl Faase from Australia.

Karl Faase has been the Senior Pastor of Gymea Baptist since 1996. Karl also has had wider leadership experi-ence including being part of the inception and leadership of the Australian Arrow Leadership Development Program, and also co-founding the Media Project, ‘Jesus – all about life’. Karl’s major wider ministries now are through Olive Tree Media ( www.olivetreemedia.com.au) which produces radio spots played around Australia and internationally as well as producing DVD/TV series.

These TV series include ‘Towards Belief’, ‘The Family Series’, ‘The Men’s Series’ and ‘Face to Face’ and ‘The Men’s Series’ also played around Australia and internationally. Karl speaks regularly across Australia and also sits on several boards. Karl is married to Jane and has three adult children - Timothy, Ainsley and Ellie.

grammes. Kamil and Kathy’s call is

is much more than Christians who work in media.

It’s about sharing, encouraging, dreaming God’s dreams together, being refreshed, inspired, nourished and equipped.

It’s an opportunity to mentor and be mentored, to learn and to teach, to give and receive. It’s family, home, precious friendships...

Above all, it’s about making the difference – together.
