The dinner brings together community members and enlisted men and women, giving a chance for the two groups to show their appreciation and support. This year’s dinner continued the tradition of a welcome line. As the enlisted men and women entered, the civilians lined up on either side of the door and shook the hands of the enlisted men and women personally thanking each one for their dedication to our country. Upon the welcome, the room filled with chatter as the civilians were able to talk more intimately with the enlisted men and women at their assigned tables. The official dinner program started with words from Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert, who took the opportunity to express his sincere gratitude for the service of the enlisted men and women as he has experienced firsthand the stress it plays on families from a parent standpoint. The program continued with Col. Kyle Kremer, Commander of the 375th Air Mobility Wing, thanking the community for our continued support of Scott Air Force Base and congratulating our efforts as they have been recognized by the coveted Abilene Trophy for the second time in three years. Other gratitudes were expressed from First Class Airman Jonathan Ringer who spoke on behalf of the enlisted men and women of the Base thanking the community for their support and making Scott Air Force Base and the surrounding community feel more like home, while Jay Tebbe, Civilian Chairman of Belle- Scott Committee, spoke on behalf of the civilians. In addition to thanking the enlisted men and women for their hard work and dedication, four area veterans were honored for their service. Terry Foerste met with each veteran prior to the dinner to hear about their experience so he could share their stories with the Enlisted Dinner attendees. The four veterans honored included, Herbert Ables, Millstadt, IL; Ron Davinroy, O’Fallon, IL ; Joe Schaefer, Swansea, IL; James Wade, Belleville, IL. This was the second enlisted dinner for Wade, as he attended his first enlisted dinner as a Staff Sergeant. The program concluded with several uplifting songs performed by the U.S.A.F. On Thursday, May 14th the Belle-Scott Committee, along with more than 100 enlisted men and women, came together at Fischer’s Restaurant for the 65th Annual Belle-Scott Enlisted Dinner.

Other gratitudes were expressed from First Class Airman Jonathan Ringer who spoke on behalf of the enlisted men and women of the Base thanking the community for their support and making Scott Air Force Base and the surrounding community feel more like home, while Jay Tebbe, Civilian Chairman of Belle-Scott Committee, spoke on behalf of the civilians. This was the second enlisted dinner for Wade, as he attended his first enlisted dinner as a Staff Sergeant.

The program concluded with several uplifting songs performed by the U.S.A.F. Band of Mid America’s “Roots in Blue”. For more information about the Belle-Scott Committee or to see more photos from the Enlisted Dinner, visit www.bellevillechamber.org and www.facebook.com/GreaterBellevilleChamber.

In May 1958, Memorial Hospital opened its doors to the Belleville community with a plan to become the area’s healthcare leader. And our commitment to Belleville and this region remains deeply rooted.

With the hospital as a strong foundation, we’ve continued to evolve by adding cutting-edge technology and top-notch physicians. From the Memorial Care Center, Memorial Medical Group and The Orthopedic and Neurosciences Center, our network is connected to provide the patients we serve with seamless, high-quality care in all of our communities.

In 2016, we look forward to opening Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh, a state-of-the-art facility that will more than satisfy the healthcare needs of the communities we serve as well as provide easier access to our patients to the north and east. This is just one of many stages of growth for The Memorial Network as we look to the future of healthcare.

When I started my new law firm, I decided to start fresh with a new bank. I was looking for a morepersonal touch with a local bank, and wanted somebody that would help us operate our payroll andhelp us manage our accounts and cash flow.

I got exactly what I was looking for with TheBANK of Edwardsville. The people there have been veryaccommodating, friendly and available to me 100 percent of the time. The level of personal attentionand responsiveness I get with TheBANK isn’t exactly commonplace in today’s banking marketplace.Frankly, their people in the field have just been better than the competition.

Once I saw how TheBANK worked with me on the business side of things, I decided to make them myexclusive bank for all my financial needs.

MEMORIAL GROUP, BJC HEALTHCARE TO EXPLORE STRATEGIC AFFILIATIONMemorial Group and BJC HealthCare today announced plans to explore a strategic affiliation between the two systems. A Letter of Intent has been approved by the Board of Directors of both organizations which will launch a due-diligence effort to explore the opportunity. A final decision as to whether the two systems will move forward with an affiliation is expected later this summer. If they proceed, the combined organization would bring the renowned expertise of BJC to the Memorial network.

“Our commitment to Belleville and the Metro East is unwavering,” said Memorial Group Chairman Les Mehrtens. “We all know that the health care industry is rapidly changing. By being proactive and looking for ways that we can position ourselves for the future, we can remain strong for the communities we serve.”

Under the proposed affiliation, BJC HealthCare would become a partner in Memorial Hospital Belleville and Memorial Hospital East. There would be no change in name, branding or leadership for Memorial Group.

“We recognize the great reputation of Memorial, and we believe BJC’s expertise can bring sustainable advantages to Metro East patients and physician partners,” said BJC President and CEO Steven Lipstein. “This affiliation would allow both systems to build upon their strengths, providing coordinated, quality care close to home.”

Details of the proposed affiliation will be defined in the coming months. If a deal is signed, it will be subject to federal and state regulatory approval.

“There are a lot of changing dynamics in our market and the health care industry. This affiliation is a step toward enhancing our care delivery model,” said Memorial Group CEO Mark Turner. “We take very seriously our responsibility to ensure our patients have the very best quality care and facilities now and for generations to come.”

INAUGURAL DAISY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN NURSING PRESENTED TO KATHY DRYDEN, RN Nurses at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital were honored for being nominated for The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's nationwide program to recognize the super-human efforts nursesperform everyday. The first award recipient at St. Elizabeth’s was Kathy Dryden, RN. Dryden’s story of care and dedication to a patient and his family at the end of life stage is the perfect example of the works of compassion and excellence all nurses provide everyday. Dryden, and future DAISY Award winners, also received a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. St. Elizabeth's introduced participation in the nationally recognized DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing this year to coincide with National Nurses Week, May 6-12. A total of eight dedicated nurses were recognized as nominees for theinaugural award. They include Kathy Dryden-CCU, Sidney Knopp-CCU, Dawn Kunde-CCU, Liz Nonn-ED, Lindsay O'Neil-Med/Surg, Lori Potter-ED, Sara Randle-ED and Alex White-Surgery. Participation in the DAISY Foundation was made possible through funds provided by the Friends of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. Nominations for future DAISY Awards at St. Elizabeth’s continue to be accepted. Patients and visitors are encouraged to share and submit their story of witnessing excellent and compassionate care from the clinical staff. For a complete listing of hospitals currently running the program, please go to www.DAISYfoundation.org.

Chamber Member UpdateTHEBANK OF EDWARDSVILLE AWARDS COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS TO FOUR METRO EAST AREA STUDENTS Four high school seniors from throughout the Metro East were recently selected to receive college scholarships through TheBANK of Edwardsville’s Community Scholarship Program. Each will receive $2,000 per year for four years of education.

Brooke Lunn from Edwardsville High School, Kari Lohr from Marquette Catholic High School, Thomas Boyer from Collinsville High School and Meghan Gingrich from Belleville East High School, were chosen as the 2015 scholarship recipients. The recipients were selected from a large group of applicants based on their positive leadership and character in both academic achievements and community activities.

“TheBANK of Edwardsville established this scholarship program 15 years ago as a commitment to the education of our future leaders,” said Kevin Powers, President and CEO of TheBANK of Edwardsville. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of the students who were selected from this year’s impressive pool of applicants, and we look forward to watching them progress through college and enter the workforce. Congratulations to the students for all of their achievements thus far.”

TheBANK introduced its Community Scholarship Program in August of 2000, pledging $1.3 million toward scholarships to be awarded over 30 years to graduating seniors of local high schools. The Greater Edwardsville Area Community Foundation, which is governed by a board of local residents, administers the program with a selection committee which interviews the finalists and selects the final scholarship recipients.

As in years past, the selection committee evaluated the applicants on academic achievements, leadership and character exhibited both at school and in extracurricular activities. Selection criteria also included leadership in community activities as well as the positive impact the students have had on others.

This year’s scholarship recipients were:• Brooke Lunn, Edwardsville High School: Brooke will attend Saint Louis University, where she plans to study Healthcare Management/Health Law. She is the daughter of Dan and Marcy Lunn;• Kari Lohr, Marquette Catholic High School: Kari will attend the University of South Florida, where she plans to study Cell and Molecular Biology. TheBANK’s Community Scholarship Program was created as part of the American Bankers Association’s “Banks of Promise” effort, which is the banking industry’s pledge toward Colin Powell’s “America’s Promise – Alliance for Youth.” TheBANK has committed to America’s Promise by partnering with not-for-profit organizations, athletes, mayors, governors, teachers, college professors and others to benefit youth through a variety of sponsorships and donations.

More than 400 Belle Valley students raised $8,491.92 for the program, which is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Of those students, 31 raised at least $125, the minimum amount needed for a trip to Eckerts. Belle Valley’s top fund-raiser was fourth-grader Avery Morgan, who raised $411, according to physical education teacher Pam Kniepkamp. Kniepkamp and fellow P.E. teacher Matt Weiler will accompany the students to Eckert’s. Jump Rope for Heart is national education and fundraising event that raises money for kids with heart issues and encourages participating students to improve their own health. Several years ago, Eckert’s partnered with Belle Valley’s Jump Rope for Heart program, offering incentives for kids who reached a certain fundraising benchmark. “We are proud of these kids who are helping other children with critical medical needs,” said Eckert’s President Chris Eckert. “We also feel strongly about people making healthy choices, and we partner with Belle Valley, which is our neighbor, to be a good influence on the students regarding making healthy eating and lifestyle choices.”
