31st Annual Belleville Chili Cook-off is Another Success

The Chamber’s largest and most anticipated event of the year, the Chili Cook-off, is yet another success.

The 31st Annual Chili Cook-off is in the books and was a great time for the Belleville community. The weekend was filled with activities for all ages including the Children’s Area, live bands, 2nd Annual Chili Chase 5K Run/ Kids Pepper Dash and the 8th Annual Junior Idol.

The winners of this year’s Junior Idol were Delaney Holliday, a 7th grader at EMGE, and Symphony Nguy, a sophomore at O’Fallon High School.

This year there were several new winners in the judged divisions of the Chili Cook-off Chili Competition. Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Chili Cook-off:Restaurant/Caterer Division: 1st Place - Belleville Shrine Club 2nd Place - Grappa Growlers 3rd Place - Belleville Running Club

The 2014-2015 Leadership Belleville Class experienced their first Friday session on October 17th, focusing on history, culture and religion. During the day the class visited The Cathedral of Saint Peter, the Lincoln Theater, Belleville Historic District and the Labor

& Industry Museum. The day also consisted of a panel discussion on religion and diversity. The day helped expand the knowledge of multiple areas that make up a community to help them become better leaders.

The November day will focus on Law Enforcement.

BELLEVILLE ROTARY CLUB BEAUTIFIES ENTRANCE OF BICENTENNIAL PARKOn a damp and chilly October Saturday morning, members of the Belleville Rotary Club and volunteers from Belleville West High School met to plant shrubs and flowers to beautify the two entrances to Bicentennial Park. A grant from Rotary District 6510 and matching funds from the Belleville Rotary Club funded the landscaping of the entrance signs at the park. The Rotary Club worked with Jason Poole from the Parks District and Rick Effinger at Effingers Garden Center to plan the project. Barbara Cempura from the Rotary Club submitted the grant request for the $2,000 project. In addition to this project, the Belleville Rotary Club provided a $5,000 contribution to the Interfaith Community Food Pantry as part of their “Service Above Self” mission.

In 1964, Belleville, Ill. native Jim Hoernis founded Hoernis Auto Body. 100 MILLION MEMBERSHIPS REACHED AT CREDIT UNIONS NATIONWIDE 2.85 MILLION JOINED THIS SUMMER; FASTEST GROWTH SINCE 2000Credit unions have reached and surpassed 100 million members nationwide – equating to one in every three Americans, according to Adam Koishor, Chief Marketing Officer at Scott Credit Union.

The 100 million memberships count is based on data collected from credit unions and compiled by Credit Union National Association (CUNA) in its “Monthly Credit Union Estimates.” CUNA estimates that credit union memberships expanded by 2.9% in the past 12 months, and the 100 million mark was eclipsed this summer. This represents a continuation (and acceleration) of trends previously reported: In 2013, memberships expanded by 2.5% and in 2012 memberships grew 2.1%. Membership growth is expected to continue in the second half of 2014 and exceed the full-year growth of the previous year.

Credit unions added a total of 2.85 million additional memberships over the past year - the largest reported increase in more than a quarter century. And, in percentage terms, the 2.5% increase was the fastest since 2000, according to the CUNA analysis.

Scott Credit Union’s membership has grown to nearly 124,000 members strong.

“Clearly, there is growing recognition for credit unions among consumers,” Koishor said. “They increasingly understand that a credit union places their interests above all else, particularly in returning financial benefits to consumer members in the forms of lower rates on loans, higher returns on savings, and lower and fewer fees.”

“It’s the structure of credit unions – as not-for-profit, democratically led and cooperatively owned financial institutions– that allows credit unions to maintain this focus on returning financial benefits to members,” ICUL leader Hession said. “In fact, by doing so, credit unions have earned the satisfaction and trust of their existing members – and are attracting even more.”

DAVID JUN JOINS HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION SERVICES Mike Marchal, president of Holland Construction Services (Holland), is pleased to announce another addition to the expanding Holland team. David Jun recently came on board with Holland as an estimator.

David is a 2006 construction management graduate from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He has nearly 10 years of experience in the construction industry serving as both an estimator and project manager.

He will also manage the Regional Medical Emergency Response Team (RMERT) which falls under the responsibility of the Regional Hospital Coordination Center (RHCC). The Illinois Department of Public Health has designated Memorial Hospital as the RHCC for Region IV in Southwest Illinois. Region IV is a regional planning group to prepare and respond to medical disasters.
