Chamber Education Committee Hosts Back2School Fun Fair

The Education Committee hosted their annual back to school event on Tuesday, July 28th at Belleville West High School. The event, formerly known as BackPACK to School, was renamed this year and structured to focus on back to school excitement with games, photo booth, mascots, new school supplies and more.

In addition to having fun, vendors were there to provide families with information on events, community organizations, things to do and much more. Families from Belleville Chamber schools lined up at Belleville West High School ready to celebrate the start of a new school year.

Families were encouraged to visit the vendors to fill up their bingo card to exchange for a backpack full of school supplies. This year, the Education Committee distributed more than 550 backpacks at the event and additional backpacks to area schools to distribute as needed. The backpacks were stuffed by volunteer students of Belleville East and West. They contained a variety of school supplies including markers, folders, paper, crayons, pencils, erasers, water bottles and more all purchased with donations from the event sponsors.

Participants and their families were also encouraged to stay and enjoy complimentary hotdogs, chips, water, dental exams and physicals.

Thank you to all of the volunteers, schools, vendors and sponsors for making an impact on so many families. An additional thank you to Belleville West High School for the use of their facility and the aid of their staff during and after set up. Children are the future of our community; we wish them all the luck for the upcoming school year.

With the hospital as a strong foundation, we’ve continued to evolve by adding cutting-edge technology and top-notch physicians. From the Memorial Care Center, Memorial Medical Group and The Orthopedic and Neurosciences Center, our network is connected to provide the patients we serve with seamless, high-quality care in all of our communities.

In 2016, we look forward to opening Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh, a state-of-the-art facility that will more than satisfy the healthcare needs of the communities we serve as well as provide easier access to our patients to the north and east. METRO EAST LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL

There’s a long, successful history between TheBANK of Edwardsville and Metro East Lutheran HighSchool, and I know for many like myself, it’s both a professional and personal relationship. I’ve met somany very good people – people like Linette Warnecke – who have worked hard to benefit my schooland me. What I’m always impressed with is the level of personalized service Ireceive … every time. I’m treated like a person and not just a representative of a big organization. It’s a refreshing way of doing business for myself, my school and our ministry.

TheBANK is not only our banking partner, but an institution that is very well connected in thecommunity. Those connections, along with their knowledge of our overall operations and the operationsof our 12 supporting churches in the Metro East area, has been very important to us. TheBANK backs upits commitment to the community by what they do with our high school and our partners.

The bottom line is that I have no reservations about recommending TheBANK ofEdwardsville – for both professional and personal banking needs – to anyone Imeet.

SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERSLooking for a chance to brighten someone’s day? Become a Senior Companion! The Senior Companion Program pairs healthy, active people 55 and older with other seniors who otherwise would not be able to live independently. The program is sponsored by Southwestern Illinois College Programs and Services for Older Persons.

“The companions provide supportive, individualized services to help clients maintain their dignity and independence,” said Carla Boswell, director of senior volunteer programs at PSOP. “The goal is to keep them independent and in their own homes.”

Senior Companions provide companionship and assistance to their peers who are homebound or may be socially isolated. They visit one or more days per week for four hours per day and can assist with daily tasks, provide transportation, and give support and a much-needed break to full-time caregivers. Companions earn a nontaxable stipend and other fringe benefits.

For more information on Senior Companion Program opportunities, contact Charla Morton in St. Clair County at 618-234-4410, ext. 7095; Deirdre Evans in the East St. Louis area at 618-874-6584; Elaine Roustio in Madison County at 618-797-7369; or Deena Duvall in Monroe or Randolph counties at 618-282-6682, ext. 8135.

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH'S WELCOMES 20TH RN RESIDENCY COHORT HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital recently welcomed 23 RN Residents to St. Elizabeth’s nursing team. As a teaching hospital, St. Elizabeth's is privileged to take part in the national Versant RN Resident Program, which is a comprehensive, evidence-based onboarding of new graduate nurses. The program helps nurses gain the experience, critical reasoning, skills and confidence they need to navigate the complexity of a hospital health care setting.

Components of the 18-week program include approximately 75 percent of clinical time and 25 percent classroom time with individual preceptor teams to guide the clinical experience. This innovative, one-on-one attention prevents novice nurses from feeling overwhelmed in their first year of work. The supportive components of debriefing and mentoring offer the RN Residents support throughout the residency and during their first year at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, which helps the residents progress to high competence levels quickly, safely and efficiently.

“We are privileged to mentor this special 20th cohort,” shared Sharon Busch, RN Residency Manager. “Since the program began in July 2006, St. Elizabeth’s RN Residency has successfully trained over 240 nurses to become the premier RN residency program for our region.” Learn more about St. Elizabeth’s RN Residency Program at www.steliz.org/teachinghospital.

Chamber Member UpdateMEMORIAL’S SLEEP DISORDERS CENTER RECEIVES AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SLEEP MEDICINE PROGRAM ACCREDITATIONThe Sleep Disorders Center at Memorial Hospital, with two locations, one located on the campus of Memorial Hospital and another at Seven Hills in O’Fallon, has received reaccreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. This accreditation includes in-lab sleep studies as well as home sleep studies. Memorial is the only accredited sleep center in the metro east.

“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) congratulates the Sleep Disorders Center at Memorial Hospital on fulfilling the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. Patrick Strollo, AASM president. “Memorial’s Sleep Disorders Center is a significant resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”

Memorial’s Sleep Disorders Center is directed by Douglas Dothager, MD, a member of Memorial’s Medical Staff. The Sleep Disorders Center is staffed by physicians specially trained in sleep medicine and board certified in sleep medicine and pulmonology (diseases of the lung). Technical staff includes registered polysomnographic technologists. Other specialists such as a psychologist, neurologist, and otolaryngologist, as well as dietitians, are available as needed.

In order to receive a five-year accreditation, the Sleep Disorders Center had to meet or exceed all standards for professional healthcare as designated by the AASM. The accreditation process involves a detailed inspection of a center’s facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts and physician training. Additionally, the facility’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine currently accredits more than 2,500 sleep medicine centers and laboratories across the country. AASM is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine. As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers and labs, the AASM is dedicated to setting standards and promoting excellence in sleep medicine healthcare, education and research. For more information about the Sleep Disorders Center at Memorial and Memorial’s Sleep Disorders Center at Seven Hills, visit www.memhosp.com.
