Welcome to Clairvaux MacKillop College where the College’s mission is to work actively as a Catholic, Christian, inclusive learning community. Inspired by our Catholic tradition, we strive for excellence imbued by the charisms of our Founders: St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and Blessed Edmund Rice. As a community, we embrace the future with confidence in that our students will grow to make a positive contribution to society.

Our dedicated, committed and compassionate staff members embrace flexibility in their curriculum design, have currency of teaching and learning practices and value engaging students in their interests and learning. Clairvaux MacKillop College is a co-educational secondary college in the Catholic tradition, developing an identity of faith, hope and love. We have built a community of students and staff working together towards common goals, striving to be welcoming, open and supportive of each other.

In 1987, Clairvaux MacKillop College commenced on its present site after the amalgamation of Clairvaux College and MacKillop Catholic College. The culture of the college has its foundations drawn from the traditions and charisms of the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

Over the years we have built a reputation for our students to value their learning. We also aim to nurture the wellbeing of our students so that they develop a balanced outlook on life where responsibility to self-discipline and self-motivation is embedded in their accountability to themselves and others.

Our vision is to continue that work. We encourage our students to be welcoming, open and supportive. This enables them to interact with their world with justice, respect, commitment, compassion, forgiveness and patience. These characteristics, attitudes and life skills will assist them to contribute positively and openly to their community.

Our College is based on a strong Christian foundation, built on the charisms of Blessed Edmund Rice and Saint Mary MacKillop.

Our College follows the tradition of both of our founding religious orders. Edmund Rice and Mary MacKillop were people of faith, compassion and action – generous and visionary in education. Their values are at the heart of our College as we teach our students to reach out to and accept others for their diversity, support those in need and value their learning as a key part of their life.

The living out of Christian values in everyday life is actively encouraged. Members of our community continually strive to be at peace with themselves, with each other and with God.

Religious Education forms part of each student’s course of study in all year levels. Students are encouraged to develop and explore their faith and values through retreats, liturgies, reflection days, College Founders’ Day and masses.

Clairvaux MacKillop College is committed to educating the whole person – academically, spiritually, physically, socially, emotionally and morally.

Pastoral care programs provide support and care for students, establishing a partnership between your family and the College. Our students are supported as they develop and blossom into well-rounded and resilient young men and women.

As they progress through the College, our students move through dedicated Pastoral Centres. These include:

• the Formation Centre, for our Years 7 and 8 students

• the Junior Centre, for our Years 9 and 10 students

• the Senior Centre, for our Years 11 and 12 students.

Within the curriculum, the Ways and Means (WAM) program is offered to all students. The aim of the program is to enable students to become more confident in their ability to meet the demands of life, and to be more secure in their sense of identity so that they can take their place in the world feeling comfortable in who they are. This program is a key to their on-going health and well-being.

Student leadership is also a key focus at Clairvaux MacKillop College. The natural leadership skills of our students are nurtured and we offer constant opportunities for student leadership, through the mentoring of younger students and support of each other.

LEARNING AND TEACHING FOR ALL

In a broad sense curriculum is understood as all activities and experiences in a school community which promote a student’s learning and development as a whole person.

Our curriculum is meaningful and diverse.

The range of our curriculum provides students with the opportunity to experience success in their learning while giving them the freedom to consider and explore directions for their future – whether that is further study, employment, industry placements or traineeships.

The curriculum is a conduit for fostering lifelong learning in our students. Our approach to classroom learning and moving student learning forward receives its directions from the Excellent Learning and Teaching Strategy of Brisbane Catholic Education.

Academic excellence is about each student maximising their capability to learn and being focused on their learning goals. Students have the support and guidance of their committed teachers in their learning.

Our curriculum is challenging. Academically and vocationally, our students are given opportunities to think, analyse, question and discover for themselves. We have a love of lifelong learning at the College and we pass this passion on to our students.

OPPORTUNITIES TO EXCEL

At Clairvaux MacKillop College, we are committed to developing the whole person. Our wide ranging co-curricular program encompasses sport, the performing arts and community involvement. This complements the academic life of our students. Participation in College activities promotes positive values that relate to our vision and mission and helps to develop strong friendships, build spirit and promotes the personal growth of our young students.

Sport

For us, sport is a passionate affair as the College is steeped in sporting history. Many of our students gain state and national representation in a variety of sports. They strengthen their skills in district sport, regional representative sport and our intra-school House sport. It is more than just talent and skills...our students also learn spirit, commitment, decision-making and leadership.

Students can participate in a wide variety of competitive and non-competitive sports offered by the College.

Arts and Culture

The performing arts at Clairvaux MacKillop College is an energetic, vibrant and stimulating part of the College community. Encompassing drama, music, dance, visual art, film, television and new media, the performing arts provides students the opportunity to develop their creativity and self-confidence as a part of their curriculum and beyond the classroom.

Students have the opportunity to participate in statewide music festivals, our College musical, College Arts Festival, dramatic performances and dance eisteddfods. Tuition in a range of instruments is also available.

WORKING TOGETHER

Clairvaux MacKillop College is an open and welcoming community. We welcome involvement by parents, grandparents, family and friends through sport, cultural activities, College Board, Parents and Friends Association and Tuckshop.

Our students are also very involved in the wider community. They have a core focus on missions, raising funds for Christian charities and building awareness for a range of worthy causes. Students have a passion to care for, support and encourage people. A spirit of service is promoted through House activities and all students are encouraged to be aware of the need for social justice.

Edmund Rice Centre

The Edmund Rice Learning Centre is the genuine expression of our belief in inclusive education. The Centre meets the specific needs of students with high-level physical and intellectual impairment through one-to-one teaching and involvement in class. In Years 11 and 12, students are able to undertake the Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA), allowing students to be successful in demonstrating skills for living and for employment.
