COM 2301 : Professional Communication Cultural sensitivity Summary : This course introduced me to some of the most important communication patterns that teach how to be an effective communicator. I also performed a training program on cultural differences. Throughout this project I have demonstrate my team work and presentation skills. To perform this presentation we also used some computer skills to provide a visual support (Power point). I also learned how to work effectively in group and use my entire potential trough a set of personality test. Skills and abilities demonstrated: Leadership: This course helped me a lot to develop this skill since my task was also to organize and assign some tasks to my teammates. I also learned that listening and openness were crucial to develop this skill. Communication / Listening: It was one of the sacred values of the class; I learned to listen effectively in a professional context. Thanks to this course I had the opportunity to develop my communication skills; I have now a new and professional perspective of communication. Computer Literacy: I learned how to create a presentation using visual aids so that the communication process is more effective. We also learned to use Adobe Office in this course.

Cross communication needs

• Listening skills: –  to understand meanings, –  to read between the lines

• Speaking skills: – enhanced through positive speech

• Observation: – Large amounts of cross cultural information can be

read in people's dress, body language...• Flexibility

– Understanding, and addressing cross cultural difference => the breaking of cultural barriers => better lines of communication, mutual trust and creative thinking.

– written and spoken with the given name first and the family name last

• In a formal setting – address men as "Mister" , married women as

"Misses" and unmarried women as "Miss"

• In an informal situation, – Americans introduce each other by first name, without

titles, and occasionally by just the last name.

• Personal space:

• The average personal distance varies from a culture to another. – The case for American’s:

• When talking to a co-worker: – Stand a specific distance apart. – Avoid physical contact while talking

• Business visit: – Be extremely punctual– Introduce yourself by shaking right hands: firm

handshake is best.

• If the meeting stand over a meal: =>The business discussion will begun after

every body has ordered. =>Socializing tends to occur after the business

is concluded, not before. =>Do not ask personal or private questions.

Tips

Rigid Cultures •Patience is a luxury, not a virtue.

•“Time is money”! Americans prefer not to waste it and like to get “right to the point”.

•Remember, Americans highly value punctuality and the ability to stick to the plan.

Direct Communication Cultures The ideas are more important than personal feeling.

Learn to say “no” directly.

Individualistic Cultures Teamwork is valued, but often every member of a team has a different function.

Differences in opinion with the boss are usually encouraged!

Lateral Cultures that everyone’s role in society or company is important
