Hey Division 3 North Key Clubbers!

I hope your summer has been filled with great

experiences, service, and sunshine! This summer is

sadly coming to a close, but that means we have

much more to be excited for! Get ready for recruiting

new members, club rush, amazing service projects,

and more! The last few weeks of summer should be

all about planning, planning, planning. Make sure to

be proactive when getting ready for a successful

school year filled with service! Before we say

goodbye to summer, make sure you attend the last

few events we have! Make your summer a

meaningful one – make a great impact in your

community! When the school year kicks in and you’re

overwhelmed with school work, always remember

you have Key Club here. Make service your stress

relief!

swimming with the waves, building a

sand castle, or burying your best friend

till on their head will stick out of the

ground. Lunch was served with hotdogs

cooked from one of the two bonfires

region seven took over, which was made

with love. Basically it was just another

summer beach day, except it was with

key club members with the passion and

love for service, which meant there

would be some spirit battles as well.

Breaking apart to learn our cheers, our

division separated from the others

learning new cheers for our newly

formed division. Afterwards we stayed

together for an informative DCM.

Crescenta Valley students felt school

pride as both officer and member of the

month on the divisional level both were

CV Falcons. As our division was excused

to have free time once more one would

be caught off guard as the divisional EA

would pop quiz us with the cheers. There

were a lot, and learning them all at once

is a bit crazy, but once you got the hang

of it, it wasn’t that bad. Soon after our

division faced their first battle against

D3S and ended the battle with hugs and

love with our fellow wolves, who were

once standing amongst us as sharkeys.

With joy and smiles we gathered around

the bonfires with marshmallows on

sticks, grahm crackers and chocolate in

our hands and s’mores to devour after a

long day of fun. As the sun was setting,

our event wrapped up with a region 7

group photo and memories to last a

lifetime.

BY JACQUELINE TSANG CRESCENTA VALLEY

On a beautiful sunny day key

clubbers from our whole region came

together at Dockweiler beach to have

some fun in the sun as well as beautify

the environment as well. Bright and early

in the morning more than 150 of us

gathered together to sweep the beach

with trash bags and spirit to make a

difference in the environment. Along the

way many we all played many icebreakers

such as human knot, which built up

teamwork, and got us very close to new

found friends. After cleaning up and

multiple icebreakers we all had the

chance to relax in the sun, jump with the

waves, meet new people, and hang out

with friends from other divisions.

Slapping on some sunscreen and hoping

we don’t get sunburn, there were arrays

of activities just put together by key club

members. For those more athletic there

was nothing better than playing

volleyball or football on the sandy beach.

Many brought their own instruments like

ukuleles and bongos for all to sing along

to their favorite songs. Always a favorite

at the beach would definitely be

the Division 3 North Starfish came up

with amazing cheers under the

leadership of our LTG and EA! Being

proud of our cheers, Starfish gathered

again for our July DCM! Having time

till the spirit battle, Region 7 came

together for a competitive yet friendly

game of tug of war! Bringing smiles to

our face, starfish were proud to come

out as underdogs and even beat

Division 3 South, even breaking the

rope! During the spirit battle, all

Divisions yelled at the top of their lungs

having the rest of the beach staring at

them in confused amazement! Then,

with fire blazing in the pits, s’mores

were made and appreciated! Bringing

half the beach home, Region 7 Key

a smile on their face, new long lasting

friendships and memories that will last a

around the beach picking up as much

trash as possible in hope of winning

the prize and in hope of making the

beach a cleaner, safer and more

enjoyable place! Later Key Clubbers

had a blast getting to know each other

more in several ice breakers such as

Human Knot and Hug in Groups of!

After, we all sat in a big group and

listened to our LTGs explain the

itinerary of the day! Having free time,

Key Clubbers had fun playing a sport

such as football, Frisbee, and

volleyball, swimming in the nice blue

water, lying on the beach, playing

music with voices and instruments

and building sand castles! Meeting

new people and sharing a laugh and

smile was one thing that all of Region

7 had in common that day! Free time

was ended with a much wanted lunch

of a beautifully cooked hot dog! After

eating, the five divisions split up onto

different parts of the beach to go over

and create new cheers for the spirit

battle later in the day! Having to

create new cheers as a new division,

REGION 7 BEACH CLEAN UP (cont.)

BY ISABEL GUZMAN CRESCENTA VALLEY

July 21st 2012 was an amazing

day full of service, friends, and fun!

As a Region, five different divisions

came together in celebration of

service and friends! Meeting at

Dockweiler beach, key clubbers filled

a huge gap between two fire pits!

Hearing laughs, seeing smiles, and

smelling sunscreen everyone knew it

would be a day full of fun! After

everyone got signed in and accounted

for, we got right to business and did

what we know how to do best: service!

To make sure that we made new

friends, the LTGs composed an

amazing idea to let the region become

better united! We had to pair up with

someone we didn’t know then after

that, pair up with another group and

so on! The group had about twelve

beautiful faces that ranged from

different divisions in each! Forming a

circle, one by one each person

introduced themselves with their

loudest voice possible and acceptance

by the smiling faces around them!

Receiving two bags, groups walked

the customers showed their

appreciation for us on yelp! I read

most of them and numerous

comments mentioned the “high

school students in the red staff t-shirts.

Seeing that really made me feel proud

of our Key Club, and also felt that we

made a difference! I hope that each

and every one of the Key Clubbers

who attended knows that, they should

be proud of themselves, and most

importantly, keep doing what they are

doing.

BOBAAAAAAA!!! Everyone

loves FOOD! Right? Well, my favorite

is boba and this was THE place to be

if you were looking for boba. After

one whole day of service, I drank total

of close to 3 cups of boba! I was filled

with boba… On July 28th, Key

Clubbers volunteered at the Pasadena

626 Night Market on a beautiful

sunny day. Everyone was excited to

help at the night market even if it

meant that they had to wake up early.

Lot of us helped guide the vendors

where to go, park, and what time it

was. However, most importantly, our

members enjoyed the time there

helping! That night, Pasadena City

Hall was crowded with hungry people

looking for good food. Many of the

vendors were looking for help, and all

of our members were more than

happy to help them set up, gather

customers, keep lines organized, and

MUCH MUCH MORE! Our LTGs

were very proud of us, but even better

Splash! You could say that the August

DCM ended with an amazing

explosion of water, whip cream, and

laughs! Starting by breaking the ice,

members and officers got the chance

to interact and get to know each other

with an ice breaker of rock, paper and

scissors! Adding a twist, people that

everyone learn names and become

better acquainted. The end resulted

with a victorious win from Crescenta

with everyone cheering for her. Then,

we started the usual routine with a

look at the amazing accomplishments

from the past month and the great

events to look forward to in the

future. Pumped and motivated for the

future and proud of the past,

Presidents then had the chance to

show off all of their wonderful

achievements from the past month.

After the club reports, Division 3

MONTHLY FOCUS: ELIMINATE PROJECT

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to

eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of

nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The

effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful

convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future

babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage,

transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and

the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.

Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving

one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are

eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. And in doing so, the project will reach the

poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care.

The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many

families.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH: JUSTIN JENKINS

LA CANADA HIGH SCHOOL KEY

CLUB

It seems La Canada is having a special affection for Key Clubbers named Justin this month – and with good reason! Augmenting July’s amicable list of exemplary Key Clubbers is loyal incoming-Junior Justin Jenkins.

Earlier this month of July, Treasurer Justin Fong posted on La Canada Key Club’s Facebook group. His post called the club to a certain task – help fundraise for PTP by advertising the annual root Beer Float Sales. When the Sunday of the fundraiser came around, the core board set up the stand and a little over a dozen Key Clubbers showed up for support. In the absence of Jenkins, they sold root beer floats with relatively little signage; a picnic table and some bright smiles seemed to suffice. Then, half an hour into the event, a joyful junior strode across the park. In each hand was a rectangular cardboard poster. A few friends ran to him to see two double-sided poster boards with “La Canada Key Club… Root Beer Float Sales!” sprawled across the top and left midsection in red and purple marker. In the remaining space were very artsy red Solo cups. While each of the two posters had a very playful appeal, both looked surprisingly professional. When asked if he made them himself, Justin gave a cool content smile and said, “Yeah, I did.” He then let other Key Clubbers hold his creations and advertise to Memorial Park in style. When Justin wanted to help out, he did so in a completely selfless manner through good intentions and effort. Despite creating awesomely aesthetic advertising, he expected nothing in return. Justin Jenkins wanted to help his community and actively responded to a call to do good, and for this, he has earned the recognition of La Canada Key Club’s Member of the Month. Good job, Justin!

OFFICER OF THE MONTH: MARIANNE LAGASCA

CRESCENTA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL

KEY CLUB

Carrying out and exceeding all the duties as officer, Crescenta Valley is pleased to announce Marianne Lagasca as Officer of the Month for July!

While summer is the ultimate time to lay back and relax, Marianne Lagasca thought otherwise as she fulfilled every service opportunity provided. Although serving as her first term as officer, Marianne has stepped out of her shy shell to embrace the spirit of Key Club in every corner. With infinite number of service events this month, Marianne left us all in awe by completing her entire summer hour goal in just one month. Starting off with the Los Angeles Food Bank Sorting to the continual Grande Breakfast Burrito fundraiser events she served with grace, passion, and of course her camera! Along with her 30 hours of service through Key Club, Marianne occupied every Saturday of July with even more service, including the Pasadena Heritage and the Pasadena POPS concert. Completing over 10 hours in a single day and working alongside the Bulletin Editor, she has set herself as a role model for fellow officers and perspective members.

As historian, she never missed a single “Kodak moment,” multi-tasking between her responsibilities as officer and duties at service events. Always on the clock, never forgetting her smile and passion, Marianne is a wonderful tribute to Crescenta Valley Key Club. Although her shy personality precedes her, she has proven her dedication and strong character through her endless effort to help those around her; because behind her smile, lives a kind and compassionate key clubber who never seizes to give back to her community. Thus, Crescenta Valley

is proud to recognize her as July’s Officer of the Month!

Our Dedication to Service

ARTICLES ROOT BEER FLOATS BY CHIRSTINE NOH One of the ongoing events La Canada Key Club has held is the Root Beer Float Sale. At Memorial Park every Sunday during our neighborhood’s weekly “Music at the Park”, we sell root beer floats for $2 each, or ice cream or root beer only for $1. All of the proceeds go to the organization PTP, or Pediatric Trauma Program. By sponsoring this group, we help provide training and equipment for doctors helping children who cannot afford medical attention. During this time we are spreading the word about what exactly Key Club is and what we do. We also talk about PTP. Plus, this event allows us to become acquainted with the people in our small, quiet city and enjoy unique music that we otherwise might not be able to listen to.

At this event, our members are also given the chance to enhance their social skill and work with their interactive minds. Key Club is all about sharing our love of service and sense of community and during our Root Beer Float sales, we are able to put it to the test. Everything from manners when engaging in conversations to courtesy when being involved in business matters all come into play. Officers and members alike have learned countless lessons over the past four weeks just by coming out on a Sunday afternoon to sell root beer floats.

The Root Beer Float Sale has been a tradition of La Canada Key Club for the past six years and it is a tradition that we intend to continue, because the love that La Canada Key Club has for service is far from dying out.

GOOD GUY VOLUNTEER

BY ROBERT LUO

Ever think participating in community service is a waste of time? Well it may seem that way, but you are actually being an invaluable asset to the community.

People all over the nation constantly struggle with setting up events and requires help. Without your commitment to volunteer and help out, you would be putting them in a heavy load of stress. In general, this happening would demoralize the event, making it less desirable.

Helping the community eases the stress of the ones organizing the event. You also get the feeling that you’ve done something productive for the event and people would appreciate you.

Participating leaves a good reputation in yourself and the school that you attend. People also start to notice you more. It can also be fun so you may actually enjoy helping the community more often. It may or may not be a good workout for you, but it is definitely a good workout... for your soul. You get the same good feeling in yourself as you would if you helped an old lady cross the street, or returned a lost cell phone.

Volunteering to help the community also provide physical benefits. You have the opportunity to engage with new people and increase your social and relationship skills. The more you open yourself up to the world, the more resources are provided to you for the future. Say if the people you meet work for a field that you are interested in, you can ask them for insight and get an idea of how it is in that field.

Aiding the community is definitely a necessity, especially during this century, where budget cuts leave huge craters in many places of our community. When you help, you may not notice it but you are slowly helping to fill those craters up. It is important to help the community because anyone can be a good guy volunteer: where you provide heavy support and accept nothing but gratitude.

GRAND BURRITO BREAKFAST

BY KATHERINE SEGARRA The largest fundraiser of the summer, the

Grand Breakfast Burrito Fundraiser, occupied most of the attention during the first weeks of July. A collaboration among numerous local organizations, the fundraiser aimed a large goal of $5000. It was a sale of handmade breakfast burritos and to make it a success, members from all sides of the club pitched in. From ticket sales at nearby grocery stores to publicizing on the local newspaper, the fundraiser aimed high in order to achieve its goal. During the day of the fundraiser, volunteers scrambled awake just as the sun rose over La Crescenta’s horizon. They arranged the tables, made burritos, served orange juice, and even labeled the water dispenser with its proper chemical name, “Dihydrogen Monoxide”.

A burrito. A person. Each one is made up of different layers. If a burrito didn’t have cheese, then the charm of the stretchy soft dairy would be gone. Same goes with a Key Clubber. If a Key Clubber didn’t have spirit, then the roaring pride of being a starfish would be missing. The GBB fundraiser, not only sold layers, but showed them as well. The morning highlighted each member’s role not just as a volunteer but as a friend, a family member, a hero, and a leader. Families and friends all bought and ate the burritos, contributing to PTP and project eliMiNaTe..
