The district has decided that we will be moving our 4 th and 5 th grade students to the Nunda building next year. I have heard people referring to this move as sending our students to the middle school/high school. Actually, what we plan to do is create an intermediate program inside the Nunda building. Yes, all of our 4 th -12 th grade students will be located in the same building but the building is large enough and already designed in a way that we can have our interme- diate program in its own space. We have several pre-k through 12 th grade buildings in our surrounding area and I have worked in a couple. As is the case in those buildings, our students in 4 th , 5 th and 6 th grades will have very little time to interact with our upperclassmen. We will use the space that was originally built as a middle school wing in the 2000 addition to house all of these students. Currently we have a few classrooms in that section that ac- commodate 7 th -12 th grade students. These classrooms will be moved to other areas of the building so that space will be used solely by our intermediate stu- dents. We also anticipate having a separate bus drop off entrance for these students that will allow them to enter directly into this area as well. Of course, our 4 th and 5 th grade teachers will be moving to this new location with the stu- dents. We feel that having familiar faces, similar expectations and procedures will help make this a smooth transition for our students. As we move forward, we will continue to update you on the changes. At this point, we are still waiting for our spring weather to catch up with the cal-

endar. It has been nice to see more sunshine but we need some warmer tem-

peratures to go along with it. I think everyone will feel better when we can get

outside and get some warmer, fresh air.

The district has decided that we will be moving our 4th and 5th grade students

to the Nunda building next year. I have heard people referring to this move as

sending our students to the middle school/high school. Actually, what we plan

to do is create an intermediate program inside the Nunda building. Yes, all of

our 4th-12th grade students will be located in the same building but the building

is large enough and already designed in a way that we can have our interme-

diate program in its own space. We have several pre-k through 12th grade

buildings in our surrounding area and I have worked in a couple. As is the

case in those buildings, our students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades will have very

little time to interact with our upperclassmen. We will use the space that was

originally built as a middle school wing in the 2000 addition to house all of

these students. Currently we have a few classrooms in that section that ac-

commodate 7th -12th grade students. These classrooms will be moved to other

First Graders Write Animal Reports

All students in first grade had to write a report about

an animal including a title, an introduction, facts about

the animal and a closing. Here are a few examples of

the great work first grade is doing!

Madrills

By Spencer Mann

My report is about man-

drills. A mandrill lives in a

forest. It has teeth, brown

fur and 2 arms. Mandrills

eat ants and nuts. The

best thing about madrills is

their sharp teeth.

Panthers

By Olivia White

My report is about pan-

thers. Panthers live in

trees. Panthers are big,

black cats. Panthers eat

deer and rabbit. I like

about panthers is they

are cute!

Rattlesnakes

By Landon McCallum

My report is about rattle-

snakes. A rattlesnake lives in

deserts. Rattlesnakes have a

long brown tail and big fangs.

A rattlesnake feels scaly.

Rattlesnakes eat rabbits and

rats. The best thing about

rattlesnakes is they have a

poisonous bite.

Bobcats

By Mady Spencer

My report is about bobcats.

A bob cat lives in forests.

Bobcats have spotted fur. It

looks like a cat. It is tough.

The bobcat eats deer,

sheep, rats and rabbits.

The best thing about the

bobcat is that it looks like a

cat.

Chimps

By Alivia Cartwright

My report is about chimps.

A chimp lives in the rainfor-

est. It looks furry and soft. It

has big ears and long legs.

Chimps eat ants, plants,

and seeds. The best thing

about chimps is they look

furry and soft.

Garter Snakes

By Aiden Upright

My report is about garter

snakes. A garter snake

lives in the woods. Garter

snakes eat slugs, insects,

and frogs. It looks red,

yellow, and black and is

scaly. I think that garter

snakes are cool because

they have lots of colors.

Merry-Go-Round Youth Theatre Visits First Grade

On Friday, March 13th, the first graders watched, and participated in, a production of “The

Golden Goose” presented by the actors of the Merry-Go-Round Youth Theater from Auburn,

New York. The play is adapted from a story written by the Brothers Grimm and emphasizes

how important each person is in a community. Earlier in the year the first graders had lis-

tened to many fairy tales, some of which were written by the Brothers Grimm.

Before the performance one of the actors visited with each of the first grade classrooms to

discuss vocabulary and to share how, although the tale is from Germany, German immigrants

have influenced several things in our lives here in the United States such as bringing us hot

dogs! The actors then had the children practice a few motions, words, and even a song that

would be an essential part of the audience participation for this presentation. During the

show all children helped sing “Mein Hut Der Hat Drei Ecken” (My Hat it Has Three Corners),

and several had a wonderful time playing the parts of the royalty, hunters, firefighters and

clowns just to name a few.

It is always exciting to watch a play and to see how language can be used to present a story.

You might be asking, “Who is that?” Well Theodor Geisel is no other than the very pop-

ular children’s author and illustrator Dr. Seuss! Elementary student council wanted to

celebrate in a big way and launched a building wide door decorating contest. Doors

throughout our building were brightly decorated in the various themes from Dr. Suess

books. Walking through our halls one might see one fish or two, a cat wearing a hat and

children wearing hats too, a Lorax, or perhaps a Grinch. Classrooms were encouraged to

choose a Seuss book or theme and creatively combine students or their work into that

theme. As you can see from the photos, the doors all looked great! Mrs. Uveino and

Mrs. Humberstone took first place with a “One fish, Two Fish” theme. “Fox in Socks”

was the second place winner for Mrs. Galton’s class and “The Lorax” wrapped up third place for Mrs. For-

rester’s kindergarten class. Thank you to everyone who participated and especially Mr. Raymond for judg-

ing our doors.

Third Grade Dr. Seuss Truffula Trees STEM Activity

In recognition of Dr.Seuss’s birthday on

March 2nd, third grade students in Mrs.

Nageldinger’s and Mrs. Amrhein’s classes en-

joyed a Dr. Seuss snack of green eggs. Af-

ter hearing the story The Lorax, students

were then challenged to create structures in

groups that resembled the truffula trees

from the story. Each group had to create a

blueprint of their structure prior to building.

After testing their tree structures, they

had to plan any modifications needed for a

successful project. Final structures had to include two trees that

stood independently; that were at least six inches tall. The trunks

and tufts of the trees had to be colored accurately. Groups were al-

so assessed by how well they worked together. Everyone enjoyed a

great day of teamwork and fun!

Keshequa High School students, Tammy

Hatfield and Kaleena Andress visited

some Second Grade classrooms as part of

New York State's Agriculture in the

Classroom Week, March 16th-20th. This

year's theme was wool. They

read "Weaving the Rainbow" by George

Ella Lyn, a wonderful book about wool

from its beginning to the finished prod-

uct. They also shared an exciting activity

about wool with the students ! A special

thanks to Tammy and Kaleena!

Mrs. Gehrig's Second Grade class enjoyed continuing their poetry

unit by participating in the annual Genesee Valley Peace Poetry

Contest sponsored by SUNY Geneseo. The students reflections

show that in Second Grade there are many different meanings of

peace. Here are a few examples……..

My Dog Brings Peace

My dog brings me peace

When she lays by me.

She is a pug, soft and cuddly,

I feel she loves me with all her heart,

And that brings me peace.

By: Shya Tierney

Gramma

My Gramma lets me sit on her lap,

I can hear her breathe,

It makes me feel happy.

She hugs me so I know she love me.

I love her too.

This brings me peace.

By: Kennedy Boss

Peaceful

I feel peaceful when Dad has extra time.

Sleeping brings me peace too.

When I get up, I am not tired.

I can get ready by myself.

That brings me peace.

By: Dean Drake

Peace to the World

I help people when they need anything.

If people are lonely,

I will be their friend.

That brings peace to the world.
