Editor’s Letter...
The route has now been
confirmed for the Olympic
torch in Doncaster! The route
will capture the heart of
Doncaster and there should be
plenty of opportunities for
spectators to get a glimpse of
the famous torch!
We have published the route from
Connisbrough to Hatfield, street by street in this month‘s arrow. There is so much to
celebrate this year with both the Olympics and the Queens Diamond Jubilee and Doncaster
council want to hear your plans. If you have organised a community event no matter how
small, Sally Dean wants to hear about it. Sally‘s details can be found on the news pages.
We have lots of news with regards to our local primary schools and it is with much sadness that
we say goodbye to Head Teacher, Mrs Crayton from St Wilfrids Primary School in Branton. Mrs
Crayton has been an exceptional asset to both the school and village and I, along with many
others, will be very sorry to see her leave at Easter. I hope Mrs Crayton is as happy and
successful at her new school as she was at St Wilfrid‘s.
May 3rd will be polling day and this year, Kilham
Hall in Branton will be the new polling station instead of Branton St Wilfrid‘s School. Branton
School will remain closed on 3rd May for a staff training day.
The deadline for the May issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 18th April. The
Arrow will be delivered from Friday 27th April.
Happy Easter

Last Year, Thorne Rural Lions organised a book
appeal to help a school in Sri Lanka that had been
affected by the tsunami. At a recent Thorne Lions
district convention Keeley Wilcox-Brown and
Kelly-ann Whiteley along with School in a box
coordinator George Bennett were presented with
a certificate of appreciation for all their work.
Their efforts meant that 7000 books were sent to
the school.

Finningley Tuesday Club
Programme, April-June 2012. Hello there,
We would like to make an appeal for help with the
group in the coming year. Unfortunately Christine
is unable to make the full commitment she has
done in the past and we do need someone to fill
the gap. It does not involve a great deal. Usually a
meeting in August sometime to plan the year ahead
and then of course help with setting up and
clearing away on the Tuesdays we meet. We
would welcome your in-put. Thank you.
April 17th. Just a reminder that numbers are
limited for the joint Tuesday club and Friendship
Group trip to play bowls. Be sure to let Jessie
know if you would like to go.
May 15th Come and join Ginny and John for an
afternoon of fun! Who will get the first prize and
who will get the wooden spoon? Your guess is as
good as mine!
June 19th A Social and reminiscence afternoon.
Sounds complicated? It's not! Bring along a small
item, a curiosity, something of interest or
something special to you to share with the group
along with a little light refreshment.
July 9th A date for your diary! The joint
Tuesday Club/ Friendship Group summer
outing, details to follow.

News, News, News, News, News, News... I am sure you will be aware this
is a very important year for us all
as we are celebrating not only
the Queens Diamond Jubilee in
June but also the fantastic news
that the Olympic Torch Relay
will be coming to Doncaster
later on in June, in readiness for
the events across the UK.
I have been asked to promote and encourage
celebration events, where communities want to do
something for themselves or join in perhaps
with one of the torch relay events, there are a
number taking place right across Doncaster.
I would very much like to hear from local groups,
organisations, even from your neighbours about
their ideas or plans, even if its in the early planning
stages.
As an Area Team we would like to show our
support with any of your plans where we
can, therefore please contact me at your earliest
convenience with dates, times, location and theme.
Can you please indicate if this event is open to all,
and whether you would like the activity promoting
on our Web pages or if it is restricted to your
group and you would simply like to let me know.

News From Finningley C of E Primary School
The Big Pedal On Monday 5th March our school launched our ‗cycle to school campaign‘ which is part of a national cam-
paign called the Big Pedal to encourage as many youngsters as possible to cycle to school. The Big Pedal is
a national, epic race organised by the charity funded organisation Sustrans. It is a virtual race around the
UK which is completed in stages. Each stage is won by the school which has the greatest number of peo-
ple cycling to school - as the more that pedal to school the faster the stage is completed! We have a
―Bike it‖ champion in school, Miss Claire Waszak, who launched the start by organizing a special breakfast
for those who arrived by bike, or
scooter, on the first day. She was
ably assisted, serving breakfasts, by
her ―Bike it Crew‖, a small team of
6 pupil helpers from Years 5 and 6,
who will be collating data, over
each of the 15 days of the race,
about the number of cyclists com-
ing into school. The Crew will also
be assisting with lots of events and
competitions in school over the 15
days to encourage as many young-
sters as possible on to their bikes.
Last year we came third out of all
the schools who competed in Don-
caster, who knows, this year we
may do better – we‘re in it to win
it! So… on yer bikes everybody!!
Bhangra Dancing in Year 2. As part of a whole-school theme day on Sikhism on 21st March, Year 2 children enjoyed bhangra dancing.
All pupils learned about the faith, and were able to participate in cultural workshops.
In Year 4/5 the sky isn’t the limit ! Year 4/5 have been studying space and rockets and have written about what they have learnt:
Space—Isaac Newton discovered gravity and decided to weigh gravity in Newton‘s. The gravity on the
moon is 6 Newton‘s and on Earth it is 10 Newton‘s. There is a massive core in the centre of the Earth
and in that core is gravity. Around the Earth is a ring of
gravity which is a force which pulls you to its centre.
Therefore you need enough force to beat gravity to
space in order to orbit the Earth.
Space experiment—Our topic is about space and we
are learning how rockets go up into space. So far we
have seen how much gravity there is around Earth, and
how rockets can get past the Earth‘s gravity. An
experiment we did was to attach a balloon full of air to a
straw, with string threaded through it, then let it go.
This showed how the rocket propelled into space.
We built a rocket as part of our space project. We
began with three tubes, two of the tubes are 50cm and
the other 1.5m. The two smaller tubes were attached
to the main tube as rocket boosters. We made a cone
for the nose of the spacecraft from card. Then we
painted it to look more realistic as it was copied from a
Russian rocket

News From Branton St Wilfrid‟s Primary School
Maths Week 5th - 9th March We had an exciting time in the latest of our
curriculum weeks. The theme for Maths
Week was “Puzzle and Pattern”.
We began the week with a visit from the
Happy Puzzle Company. Every class joined in a
Puzzle Session where they were challenged to
solve puzzles and problems. Some of them
were quite tricky! The children needed to
take turns, listen, share their ideas and work
as a team.
All the classes entered a Pattern Competition.
In the hall were lots of patterns and
sequences. The children had to decide what
number or shape came next. Well done to all
the children who took part.
Our Maths week coincided with World Maths
Day and all the junior children entered this
fantastic on-line global challenge. Children
tried to answer as many maths questions as
they could in 60 seconds to beat opponents
from all over the world. They played many games and faced opposition from children in many
countries.
Each morning we had a number of the day and different classes told us interesting
information and number facts about different numbers.
All of the classes did different work in their maths lessons; some about symmetry,
repeating shape patterns, Vedic maths, patterns in 100 squares, patterns in times tables,
patterns in digit roots. Classes brought maths into their other work, too; patterned dances
and number shapes in P.E., looking at the world map to locate the countries we played against
in the World Maths Day challenge in Geography, patterns from other cultures.
We created a repeating pattern of colours
and shapes which covered an amazing 46
metres and went around the school.
The finale of Maths Week was a visit from a
Mathsmagician. Tony Charles performed
shows for all the classes which were very
entertaining but used mathematical concepts
too. He showed some of our older children
the maths behind the tricks and some of them
performed their „mathsmagic‟ to parents at an
after school workshop.

Mayflower Sanctuary visit Class R On Thursday 23rd February Class R had
some very special visitors. Trevor the puppy,
Pippin the kitten and Honey and Bubble the
guinea pigs came from Mayflower Sanctuary.
Penny, their carer, told us all about them
and how to look after them correctly. We all
had a chance to play with or stroke them.
We had a great time! We were very pleased
to give Mayflower Sanctuary a contribution
to help them with their very worthwhile
work.
World Book Day To celebrate World Book Day the children
dressed up as their favourite book
characters for the day. We had a parade in
morning assembly, so children could show
their costumes, and in the afternoon
members of staff shared stories with
children from Reception Class through to
Class 6.
Class 1 Visit to Cusworth Hall
Museum—On Tuesday 21st February, Class
1 went on a school visit to Cusworth Hall
Museum as part of our topic „Homes Long
Ago.‟
We took part in a workshop called „Victorian
Mix.‟ In this workshop we played with
Victorian toys and games, did the washing
without running water or electricity and
experienced what it was like to go school in
Victorian times.
All of Class 1 had a fantastic time at
Cusworth Hall and enjoyed finding out about
life as a Victorian child!
We hope you enjoyed reading our news and
look forward to sharing more information
about our activities next month.
Best Wishes,
C. Barnes,
Acting Head teacher

Olympic Torch Route
The Olympic Torch will pass through Doncaster on Tuesday
26th June on it‘s way from Sheffield to Cleethorpes.
The route starts at Connisbrough and works it‘s way through
Doncaster towards Hatfield.
Torch Bearers will share the task of running through
Doncaster and many schools and businesses will be involved
in this historic moment. Many thousands will be expected to
line the route to catch a glimpse of the famous torch. Many
people have asked ‗what happens if the flame goes out?‘
Apparently this had happened many times before and it is
simply re-lit! The torch has travelled in the past both in air
and under water and remained alight.
Below is a copy of the proposed route on Tuesday 26th
June 2012. Let‘s hope the flame burns brightly for
Doncaster!
The London 2012 Olympic Torch designed by
Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, 8000 have
been produced in readiness for the games.

New Bus Shelter
The new stone bus shelter at Main Street, Auckley has now been completed by IMN Contracts and looks
very attractive in its rural setting. This development would not have been possible without the generosity
of local resident, Mr. W. Hagan who gifted the land to the Parish Council in order for a shelter to be built
which will give members of the community protection from wind and rain whilst waiting for buses.
New Play Equipment
New play equipment was installed at Riverside Park by SMP Playgrounds. Their workmen were on site in
all weathers and completed the installation three days before Christmas. The area is well-used and the
zip wire in particular is a great attraction for youngsters.
Funding for the project was via a Section 106 Agreement for the houses built at Dursley Court, plus a
contribution from the Parish Council.
Parking Outside School
Parking continues to be a problem outside Auckley School and on a number of occasions recently the
road has been completely blocked to through traffic as a result of vehicles being irresponsibly parked.
The Police and DMBC are aware of the problem, and the Head Teacher has highlighted the situation in
newsletters to parents. Any resident of School Lane whose gateway is blocked due to parked vehicles
should ring the Police on 101.
Senior Citizens’ Outing
It is now time to arrange this year‘s summer outing, funded by charity land rents, for the parishioners of
Auckley. Residents are invited to suggest locations they would like to visit. Please give your suggestions
to the Clerk or any Parish Councillor. Clerk: Mrs. M. Caygill Tel: 01302 770922 .

What’s That Odd Noise?
Earlier in the year I was driving down Mosham Road towards Branton when I heard a strange whining
sound in the car. A quick check in the mirror revealed that the kids weren‘t with me, so it was clearly
something else!
It was just in the background, and sounded like an old electric milk float, kind of winding up when I accel-
erated and down when I slowed. But, had it been there all the time, and I just hadn‘t noticed it? I left it a
few days, and then asked my wife if she had heard it too. Yes, she had, but again, we were unsure if it had
been there all the time. So we left it.
A week or so later, the whine had become more pronounced, clearly there was something wrong and so
we needed a mechanic. I checked my cars warranty, and was very relieved to see that it had around two
weeks left on it! So, the garage was called, the fault described, and the car duly taken in.
Now I‘m no mechanic, but I know a little about engines, and so I thought I had an idea of what it might be.
Of course, I shared my thoughts with the mechanic on the ‗diagnostic test drive‘, no doubt to his great
amusement. However, I did suggest that vicars, whilst not mechanics, are able to do a good service. Terri-
ble I know!
In the end the garage had the car for almost a week. For the mechanically minded the main drive bearings
had failed, and so it needed the gearbox to be removing, and all the associated work with it. This was very
time consuming, and they charged labour by the hour of course.
I am so thankful that it was still under warranty, and I hadn‘t left it too long. Otherwise the bill would have
been in excess of £1000, or if left the whole thing would have eventually gone bang. In either event, you
may well have seen the vicar puffing his way around the villages on a bike!
In life we can have odd noises that often rumble away in the background. It could be our relationships, our
work, our home, anything really. Like the car, if left unchecked it can build into a huge problem, and at
times it can sadly go bang.
There is no warranty for this kind of thing, but I do believe as a Christian that God wants to help us
through it and journey with us through the difficult
times. The famous 23rd Psalm says, ‗Though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear
no evil, because You are with me.‖
He will help us, we only have to invite Him, and no
huge bill for the time he spends with us!

Driving in the countryside
Dear Readers, Driving on country roads requires an entirely different set of skills to driving in congested towns. Rural
roads are arguably the best place to exploit your driving abilities and get the most enjoyment out of your
driving. Traffic is usually light, you can use your observation skills, the roads are more interesting and
you‘ll have to make well-judged overtakes. The same level of planning and concentration is required but
you‘ll be dealing with an entirely different set of hazards and sources of information.
You will need all the selective observation skills you have developed but also consider…
Taking extra care in case people or vehicles suddenly appear around corners, drive out of isolated field
entrances, farm drives etc, especially on 60mph roads.
Looking well ahead (over the hedges, where possible) to spot oncoming traffic in the distance, especially
trucks and tractors. Also look for potential overtaking zones and plan your arrival time to coincide with a
gap in the oncoming traffic.
Livestock in the fields might indicate that there may be mud on the road and you should also always be
prepared to encounter a flock of sheep around the next bend.
The line of hedges, trees, or telegraph poles often denotes the direction the road may take around the
next bend. Use this to your advantage.
Don‘t swerve uncontrollably if an animal or bird darts out in front of you. Better a broken fog light or
dented bumper than a total loss of control and a
serious accident.
Holes in hedges are often found on particularly sharp
or tightening bends, and are usually created by some
unfortunate driver who has overshot the corner and
gone straight on. Treat them as a reminder to take
care and to keep control of your speed.
Have a Free Public Assessment Drive.
As I said in last months Arrow, the Doncaster
Advanced Motorists Group is offering free public
assessment drives this month for anyone with a
current full driving licence. The drive will be in your
own car and the vehicle and you must comply with
all current road traffic regulations, MOT, Insurance,
etc: A document check will be made before the
drive. All readers who wish to have a free taster of
advanced driving please contact me on the number
below to book your drive, this means you ladies too!
