The nights are starting to close in as we prepare for Autumn and once again, we benefit from the glorious colours this time of year brings (apparently this is a sign of me getting old!).

Maybe it is, but I love walking Digger in the woods and seeing the changes Autumn brings or driving down Cantley Lane and admiring the array of colour on show from the trees.

Thinking about Autumn, we have ideas on how to spend Halloween and Bonfire night in this month’s issue. Doncaster Race Course with Hallam FM, have their Fireworks Spectacular the weekend before Guy Fawkes and if you are planning on a party at home, Hydroactive at Branton Nurseries, have a buy one get one free offer on all their fireworks.

Boston Park Farm have some scary events planned to celebrate Halloween at the end of the month coinciding with October half term.

I hope you enjoy reading all about our young people and what they have been up to in school. Thank you to all our local primary schools who submit articles each month.

Welcome to the October

Community News Kilham Hall Management Committee will be holding its 5th AGM on Monday 3rd November 2014. The AGM is open to the general public and will take place in Kilham Hall starting at 6.30pm. The meeting will last approximately 45 minutes and will then be immediately followed by an ordinary meeting which will not be open to the general public. Anyone wishing to attend the AGM will be made welcome.

The children's Hallowe'en Party is to be held on the afternoon of Sunday 2nd November starting at 3.30pm and finishing at 6pm. Mr Dan will, once again, be entertaining the children and there will be food and drink refreshments part way through the afternoon. Tickets will again be priced at £1 and will be on sale at Branton Post Office w/c 20th October.

Due to Health and Safety insurance, there will be a maximum of 50 tickets available on a 'first come first served basis' and the age range is 4 years to 11 years (in other words Primary School children only). We respectfully ask that no other children of any age are brought along as only children with tickets can be admitted. Parents are welcome to stay for the duration but we ask that only one adult per family of children joins us as Mr Dan needs plenty of space to entertain and the safety of the children is paramount. The last 3 years' Hallowe'en parties have been great successes and enjoyed by all the chidren and adults alike so keep Monday 20th in mind and head round to the Post Office before tickets are sold out!!

There will be the usual Hallowe'en styled Fancy Dress competition with prizes awarded for the best 3 outfits and this year we shall be involving the children in the judging in the best tradition of interactive reality shows. Mr Dan will then be called upon to make the final decision!

In next month's issue of the Arrow we shall be able to review our Macmillan Coffee Morning and there will be more to come on our Coffee Club's autumn events. Kilham Hall committee

Macular Society. Doncaster Branch of the Macular Society meet on the third Monday of the month at Doncaster CVS, 5-6 Trafford Court, off Trafford Way. We usually have a speaker alternate months. July we enjoyed afternoon tea at the Mansion House, earlier this year some of the group attended a conference in Leeds where we heard about the latest pioneering work to find new treatments and to see the latest low vision aids.

Cantley Community Library Cantley Library officially opened as a Community Library run by Volunteers on 1 September 2014. The library will be run on a day to day basis by a group of trained enthusiastic volunteers who are committed to providing the same service as previously provided by DMBC and it is thanks to these that Cantley can retain its library.

Doncaster Council will continue to meet some of the running costs and provide a part-time member of staff to oversee the training of volunteers and to support professional services. All other aspects of managing the library will be the responsibility of the three Directors and wider management committee. More volunteers are still needed in order to extend the number of hours the library can open and anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is asked to complete a simple application form at the library.

Grateful thanks are extended to James Motor Company and Cantley Post Office for their generous donations and to Auckley Spar for providing items of refreshments. Cantley Post Office has also agreed to provide a range of newspapers so that users can continue to enjoy these free of charge.

It is hoped that all current users will continue to support the library and that patience and understanding will be shown during this transitional period.

Community News Great North Run

We did it! David Chorlton and I completed the Great North Run for Charity. We raised nearly £450 for Cancer research and £300 for Sheffield Hospitals.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

New Parish Councillor Auckley Parish Council welcomes new Member, Mrs. Dawn Fiddler, who was co-opted onto the Council at the September meeting, following the resignation of Mr. Jason Fletcher. Commemorative Plaque Council has funded a brass plaque to commemorate 100 years since World War I began on 4 August 1914. The plaque has been installed on the rear wall of the pinfold which is situated on Main Street opposite the entrance to Bell Butts Lane. Hayfield Residents' Consultation Residents of the Hayfield Estate were recently asked what recreational facilities they would like to see provided on the land at Hayfield Lane, previously used as the RAF football field. The majority of people who responded to the questionnaire favoured the provision of play equipment to cater for a range of age groups from toddlers to teenagers, and these responses are now being considered. New 'Auckley' Village Sign One of the developers currently building houses near the airport link road has kindly offered to fund and construct a second village sign. This will be situated on the highway verge at Hurst Lane, Auckley Request for Pedestrian Crossing Council has campaigned over several years to have a suitable pedestrian crossing provided on Main Street near to Lidgett Crossroads in order for pedestrians to cross safely - particularly children on their way to and from the Hayfield School. This is still being pursued. Flower Tubs Council would like to thank the people who kindly plant and water the flowers in the concrete planters at Eastfield Lane, the village green and the pinfold. The flowers have provided a colourful display and enhanced the appearance of the village throughout the Summer. Many thanks. Fir Tree Avenue Part of the road at Fir Tree Avenue has been fenced off for reasons of Health and Safety whilst an apartment block is being constructed. As a result of the closure, residents from the Hayfield Village Estate, walking their children to school, now have to walk on the grass verge where the road is fenced off and this is difficult when pushing buggies on wet grass. We have spoken to the contractor and he is looking into the provision of a temporary footpath until the road is re-opened. Auckley Show This year's Show again proved to be very successful with a record attendance and a wide variety of activities provided. The Parish Council wishes to thank all the members of the Show Committee for their hard work in providing this very important village event.

The new school year has got off to a great start here at Auckley with pupils returning to school looking smart in their uniforms and ready to learn. We are pleased to welcome new teacher Miss Gemma Sutherby, new TA Mr Eastwood onto the team as well as our new Caretaker, Mark Forster. Here is a taste of how some of our topics have being launched….

As part of year 5’s exciting new topic ‘Beast Creator’, they had a visit from Helen (from Sam’s Safari), who brought some of her wriggly friends with her! Just a few of these visitors included Millie the Giant Millipede and Prickles the Giant Prickly Stick Insect. The children were very brave and held a lot of the minibeasts, sketched them and asked Helen lots of questions – their enthusiasm was infectious! They are now using their new knowledge to write reports about their favourite minibeast and will soon be writing stories about them! Creepy-crawly-tastic! Year 3 visited to Tesco to learn where our food comes from. During the trip we tried lots of different foods including pomegranate seeds and blue cheese. We also got to hold a very slimy squid. The purpose of our trip was so we could learn about food "From Farm to Fork." We had a very interesting day and learnt lots……Every little helps!


Y1 went for a walk in the woods at school, for their topic splendid skies, based around the weather, looking for clues about the seasons.

As part of our topic about ‘Lotions and Potions,’ Year 4 had an exciting afternoon with some visi-tors from Lush. They told us all about the history of the company and we were impressed by their ethical values. After a demonstration and explana-tion about how bath bombs are made, we all had the chance to make our own ‘blue robots’. We all felt incredibly relaxed after testing our bath bombs at home and our classroom smelt lovely for days!

Our school dinners have had a revamp, with the introduction of a salad bar and jacket potato and sandwich option. This is providing a wider choice for those pupils in Key Stage 1 who now receive free meals under the new government initiative.

News from St Oswald’s School, Finningley.

It was surprises and excitement all round for the students and staff at the end of the schools summer term.

Key stage 1 and 2 were all entertained with a visit from a Clown with magical powers and then the fun of dancing the day away during school hours. It was to celebrate and reward a hard working and exceptional year for the children and their teachers.

Estate Agents Portfield,Gerrard and Wright set a competition for pupils to create a house of the future. The winners were Martha Bartle, Cerys Hallam and Jonah Bartle.

And the sun kept on shining for the schools sports day, with children participating in everything from the egg and spoon race to the skipping and sack race. 4 teams battled it out for the shield and it was finally awarded to the blue team who won by a very narrow margin.

The Summer Fair was also a great success for the “Friends of St Oswalds” who organised tombolas, name the bear, hook a duck and the ever popular raffle. The fair was opened by our fabulous Lollipop Lady Mrs Anderson who cut the ribbon to start the fun.


St Oswald.

Oswald was an Anglo Saxon the Angles actually became known over time as the English, English from Angles, British from the local indigenous tribe of Britons. Oswald lived in Northumbria a region in the 7th century which then stretched from the Tweed to the Humber. He lived from 605 to 642 so a long time age. His name means Divine Ruler and he was supposed to be the 12th generation descended from them pagan god Woden,

Oswald grew up as a pagan a worshipper of the old gods, well at least until he was 12 he did. His father Aethelfrith ruled by might and the sword in a battle between rival tribes he was killed by Raedwald when Oswald was 12. These Anglo Saxon and early British names are great. So with Aethelfrith dead Oswald his mum and siblings fled to the north into what is now Argyll but was then the kingdom of Dal Raita. Northumbria was now ruled over by Edwin. Oswald was brought up at the court of Dal Raita at Dunadd but he also spent a great deal of time on the island of Iona with the monks of St Columba. It is on Iona that he converted to Christianity.

Oswald spent 17 years in exile. Then Edwin was killed by the Mercian king Cadwallon, Eanfrith Oswald’s step brother tried to recover Northumbria but failed so Oswald stepped up to the mark. Oswald with a small band of warriors advanced towards Cadwallon and he set up camp at a place called Heavenfield. The actual battle took place nearby at Deniseburn. That night, a cold December night in the Cheviots while Oswald slept he was visited by a vision of St Columba who told him the following; ‘This coming night go out from your camp into battle, for the Lord has granted me that this time your foes shall be put to flight and Cadwallon your enemy shall be delivered into your hands and you shall return victorious after battle and reign happily.’

Before he engaged in battle Oswald had two small trees felled and these were made into a cross which he had placed in the ground. Oswald then called to his army; ‘Let us all kneel together and pray the almighty, the ever living and true God to defend us in His mercy from the proud and fierce enemy; for he knows that we are fighting in a just cause for the preservation of our whole race’. Oswald went into battle and was victorious he became the new king of Northumbria.

Within months of his victory at Heavenfield Oswald requested from Iona a bishop to minister to himself and his people. The bishop they sent was Aidan. Oswald gave Aidan land on Lindisfarne also known as Holy Island and Aidan established a monastery there. Oswald would accompany Aidan on his missionary work among the people to translate for him, as Aidan was an Irish monk. As well as helping Aidan with his mission Oswald would spend a great deal of time in prayer. He was known to pray with his hands open on his lap so that he was ready to receive the word of God. It was because of this method of praying and his charity to others that he was known as Oswald the open handed.

One example of his charity is the following; Oswald and Aidan were celebrating Easter at Bamburgh with a great feast. They has just sat down to eat when an officer, whose job it was to relieve the needy, interrupted them, telling them there was a multitude of poor people from every district at the castle walls. These people were asking for alms. Oswald at once ordered that all the food before him be given to the needy and the silver dish it was on was to be broken up and the pieces given to the needy as well. Aidan grasped Oswald’s right hand and said ‘May this hand never decay’ This distribution of silver is thought by some to be the beginning of the Maundy Money service. Oswald had a short reign he was killed in 642 in a battle between his Northumbrians and the people of Mercia led by Penda. This was in a battle for land by rival kingships. It is a tradition that he died with a prayer on his lips he prayed for the souls of his army with the words; ‘May God have mercy on their souls’

Oswald died at Oswestry- his head was cut off as were his arms and these were arranged on wooden spikes. When his brother Oswin came to reclaim the body, legend has it that a raven flew down picked up one of the arms and deposited it in a tree so Oswin would know which body he should take. Hence the town being called Oswestry – Oswald’s tree. His head is in the coffin with St Cuthbert in Durham Cathedral. His right arm was in the local parish church in Bamburgh where it remained uncorrupted.

After his death there were miracles attributed to him which took place in various places; at the site of his death, at the site of the cross at Heavenfield, where people would take of pieces of the wood soak then in water and then use the water for healing purposes. He is said to have healed a variety of injuries form broken arms to fevers to illnesses in animals. In fact at one time Oswald had quite a following and his fame spread throughout Europe, to Germany, Holland, Belgium where there churches dedicated to him as ours is. He had such a following that he may have become patron saint of England but with the rule of Willian1st (the Conqueror) and the harrying of the North all things Northern and Anglo Saxon fell from favour. In fact JRR Tolkien who wrote Lord of the Rings actually based Aragorn son of Arathorn on our St Oswald so he must have been worthy of recognition.

So that is why our church is called St Oswald’s after Oswald the open handed- the king of Northumbria one of a select band of royal saints, the first royal Christian martyr. Oswald who converted to Christianity and brought that faith to his people. Oswald who was very charitable and brought help to others. Oswald who fought for his God.

I feel it is a privilege to worship in a church dedicated to such a person.

Let Your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’

I changed my car the other week. I do enjoy having a new (used) car, but not the pantomime you go through to buy one, which I find quite intimidating. I went to a local dealership to ‘look’, but soon the salesperson appeared and began asking questions and pointing at expensive new models. It would seem that simply being left to look isn’t an option! However, there was a suitable vehicle, we asked about it, and then the fun started!

What figure do you have in mind for yours as part exchange? I had already paid for an accurate valuation so I had an idea, and sure enough and they initially offered way below the ‘poor’ value. So we said they needed to do better. The salesperson headed for the managers office to negotiate and returned with a better offer.

Next up. ‘Is it taxed?’, ‘Erm, no.’ was the reply, ‘Can you tax it?’ we ask. ‘I’ll find out’, and so back to the managers office. ‘We can’t tax it, but we will give you a full tank of petrol.’ Okay, we were happy with that.

Then, ‘Today is a special offer day, so the screen price isn’t what you will pay.’ Of course we wondered what that meant and asked for an accurate price that included our part-ex. The figure was much higher than we thought. Having looked carefully we noticed an additional amount of several hundred pounds. We asked what this was for. ‘Oh, that’s for the long term warranty that protects everything….except tyres, exhaust, brakes…’ We didn’t want that and were a little perturbed it had been added without us being asked.

And so after three falls and a submission we eventually came to an agreement and signed for the car. The next week we went to collect, but before getting the keys we were once again asked if we required another three kinds of insurance - we didn’t.

This isn’t a criticism of the dealership or car sales, and I know some people enjoy this kind of bartering process, but I wish it was more transparent and simpler. That’s the price, that’s what you pay, that’s what you get. Clear and straightforward.

The above could almost be from a political speech, however, it’s actually from Matthew 5, verse 37, and I think the straightforward honesty embedded in those words would perhaps do wonders in the world today. To speak clearly what we mean, without using fancy talk in an attempt to blur the edges of the issues the world has today.

Branton St Wilfrid’s CE Primary School

We welcomed our children back from their summer break at the start of September and they have all settled very well into their new classes. The children who joined the school in Foundation have made an excellent start to the year.

On Wednesday 17th September, years 5 &6 visited Cadbury World in Birmingham to support our learning as part of our "Chocolate" topic. We had the most amazing day and learnt so much. We found out about how the Cadbury family had developed their business, staying true to their Christian beliefs, and built the village of Bournville. They were the first business to give their employees free health care, schools and holidays. We also learned how chocolate is made, and watched how chocolate is tempered before it is moulded ready to be sold in the shops. We took part in an Aztec workshop, and learned about how cocoa beans made their way to Europe via Spain. Without the Spanish sailor, Cortez, finding the Aztecs in Mexico we would never have known about cocoa beans and worked out how to make the chocolate that we know and love today!
