The directory of ALA-accredited master’s programs in library and information scienceindicates that almost half enable students to complete the degree either wholly orsubstantially online, and a similar (not necessarily overlapping) number offer coursesin locations remote from the main campus. The IMLS-funded Web-based InformationScience Education (WISE) consortium is gaining interest and new members. Thequestion is no longer “should we do distance education?”, but “how are we doing, andcan we do it better?” What do the data tell us about successes and failures? How havewe undertaken to evaluate our distance education activities? Do we have comparativeresults? A group of panelists from institutions which have pioneered distanceeducation in library and information science will address these issues.
