Review the progress toward earning the Star Council Award with each council in your district. Are you encouraging each council in your district to attend your district mid-year meeting? If not, why? O n Wednesday, March 25, the Order will observe the Knights of Columbus Day of Prayer for the Unborn Child. Councils are encouraged to sponsor special Masses, rosaries or prayer services for Knights, their families and parishioners to pray or fast in an effort to restore respect and protection for unborn children. Councils should distribute the Prayer for Life (#4665) prayer card, available in English, French and Spanish, from knightsgear.com. For more information on the Day of Prayer for the Unborn Child, visit kofc.org. ANNUAL SURVEY OF FRATERNAL ACTIVITY (#1728) SERVICE AND MEMBERSHIP IN MARCH District Deputy H unger afflicts more people in your community than you may think. As part of the Order’s Food for Families program, councils are encouraged to conduct a 40 Cans for Lent program. The program asks each member of the council, along with each parishioner, to donate one can of food for each day of Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18. If the council collects and distributes a minimum of 1,000 pounds of food and contributes 100 man-hours of service to the program, it will satisfy all four requirements for the Family Activities category for the Columbian Award. T he Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity (#1728) measures each council’s success throughout the calendar year. The combined result of each council’s good works is a powerful testament of the charity that the Order, as a whole, provides to our parishes and communities. Please be sure that each council in your district is keeping track of the great work done in their parish and community and then reports that work to the Supreme Council Headquarters by December 31. Also, ensure that councils are keeping accurate figures for the number of hours donated to charity. For example, many councils report that they visited a nursing home for 1.5 hours on the survey. However, if 10 Knights participated in that activity, the hours that should be reported is 15 hours. Total hours for an activity are the hours multiplied by the number of people participating in the activity. C ouncils in your district should be preparing for a busy March both in terms of membership growth and charitable outreach. The weekend of March 14-15, 2015 features the Orderwide Church Drive. Councils should be consulting with their pastor and securing permission to have pulpit announcements after all Masses on this weekend. To conduct a successful Church Drive, please consult the Fraternal Training Portal. The Orderwide First Degree Week is scheduled for March 16-22, 2015. Prospective members gathered from the Orderwide Church Drive should be welcomed into councils during this week. Councils can take advantage of utilizing the First Degree Video Production, available in Officers Online, if they do not have a certified First Degree Team available. The week of March 23-29, 2015 is highlighted by the Orderwide Outreach Week in honor of Father McGivney. Councils are encouraged to conduct charitable service projects during this week to honor our founder. Founders’ Day Weekend caps off a busy month on March 28-29, 2015. Councils are encouraged to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Order with a Mass, a charitable service project or by conducting a special First Degree Ceremonial. 40 CANS FOR LENT
