Vol 16, No. 2 Winter 2014-15 Official Newsletter of SUNY Oneonta Athletics The men’s and women’s track & field teams combined to send five individuals to the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field championships in Winston-Salem, NC on Mar. 13-14. The Red Dragons came away with a pair of All-Americans on the men’s side while sophomore Rachael Shine earned All-American honors for the women. Overall, the men finished 17th while the women were tied for 29th. On the first day of competition the men scored all 10 of its points while earning a pair of All-American honors. The senior duo of Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) and J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) both placed in the top-8 in the weight throw to earn All-American honors for the men. Weinert, who entered the meet seeded fifth, crushed it and finished second to earn his first indoor honor. Weinert’s heave of 20.47m (67’ 2”) soared past both his Oneonta and SUNYAC record by one meter. The toss was also the fifth best all-time in Division III. Roth was seeded tenth entering the championships and came away with a seventh place finish to earn his second All-American honor in the weight throw. He recorded a final distance of 19.12m (62’ 8 ¾”). Junior Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia), who was making his third straight indoor championship appearance, stumbled on the last hurdle and finished 12th overall. His time of 8.34 did not qualify him for the finals in the event. On the women’s side, freshman Kayla Clohessy (Pearl River/Pearl River) finished 11th overall in the long jump. The rookie entered the meet seeded 11th overall in the event and was one of only three freshmen in a group of 17 qualifiers. Clohessy failed to qualify for the finals after recording a distance of 5.32m (17’ 5 ½”). Shine (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who entered the championships with the fastest time in Division III this season in the 800, ran 2:13.34 to qualify eighth for Saturday’s final. “When we head into a national championship, our primary goal is Dragon 1 Tales Track Sends Five to Nationals.................................................................. pg. 1-2 Rookie Makes Impressive Run..................................................................... pg. 1 Kids in Sports Day........................................................................................ pg. 2 Historic Career for Zach Mager Closes ..................................................... pg. 2 Women’s Swimming Takes Third at SUNYAC’s ....................................... pg. 3 Individual Honors and Awards ................................................................pg. 3-5 In This Issue... It was his 22nd pin of the season, which established a new single season record for Oneonta. In the quarterfinals, Bethel went up against the No. 3 seed Mackenzie Green of Trine University who received a forfeit win to reach the quarterfinals. After a scoreless first period, Bethel scored five points on a reversal and a near fall to put the pressure on Green. Bethel would record his 31st straight win with a 9-2 decision to move into the semifinals. Waiting for Bethel in the semifinals was the No. 2 seed Donny Longendyke of Augsburg who was 30-0. Bethel battled as best he could but fell in a tight 8-4 decision, which would drop him to the consolation side of the bracket. “Unfortunately James tweaked his shoulder pretty bad in the 1st pe- riod of the semi-finals,” Ritter said. “He went for a high-risk move early and got caught. Part of the learning process.” Bethel would pin unseeded Trevor Marsh of Alma College in 4:24 to reach the third place match where he would face the No. 5 seed, Zachery Rosenberry of Delaware Valley. Rosenberry would go on to pin Bethel in 5:14 to claim third place. Ritter concluded, “We were pretty sure he was going to have to default out of the tournament but he wanted to keep going. He made us very proud this weekend and has a great future ahead.” Bethel finished his first collegiate season with an incredible 39-6 record overall and 23 pins. His 39 wins are tied for third all-time in a single season. His tremendous first season earned him Rookie of the Year honors from the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. Bethel also earned All-Conference, All-State and All-Region honors this season. Bethel earned his automatic berth to nationals when he won the Northeast Regional title. 1,455. That’s how many points Oneonta basketball’s all-time leading scorer accumulated over his three and a half year career. Zach Mager entered a year-end showdown with Fredonia needing only two points to break John Fleming’s record of 1,418. The 26-year-old record fell when the senior spotted up from three hitting nothing but net. This is not Mager’s only place in Oneonta lore, the New City, NY native sits atop the record books in free throws made (434) and career free percentage (84.9%) second in free throws attempted (511) and third in three-pointers made (155). In the 2014-15

campaign, the Clarkstown South grad broke a 52-year-old record in free throw percentage converting 88% of his attempts from the charity stripe, including 38 in a row in the early stages of the season. The three-time All-Conference selection started 75 of his 91 career games shooting 44.5% from the field and 40.5% from long distance. He set a career high in points with 40 against Brockport in December 2012 where he nailed a career best dozen field goals. In his senior season, he posted a season-high 33 points in the Battle of the Red Dragons going 10-17 from the field, 4-8 from beyond the arc and 9-11 from the charity stripe. Mager is set to graduate in May with a degree in business.

always to achieve our best performances of the season,” said head coach Angelo Posillico. “We did that three of the six times we competed this weekend. We definitely didn’t compete at our best in some events, but it’s an opportunity to gain experience and learn how to be better during the outdoor season.” The highlight of the final day for Oneonta was the third place performance of Shine. Shine crossed the line with a time of 2:10.71, two seconds behind the winner, Cynthia Adams of Lebanon Valley, who ran 2:08.81. Shine’s time in the final also reset the school record that she had set the previous weekend to qualify for nationals. “I was happy to see Rachael compete so well,” Posillico noted. “It was her first national experience and she had the pressure of being the top seed to deal with. I thought she handled it great and I was really proud to see that as her coach.” Roth was gunning for his second All-American honor of the weekend and finished 15th in the shot put on the final day. He recorded a distance of 15.08m (49’ 5 ¾”). It’s now on to the outdoor season for Oneonta. They are scheduled to open the spring portion of its schedule the weekend of Apr. 3-4 in Princeton, NJ and Cortland, NY. Posillico concluded, “Overall, it’s nice to come home with three All-Americans and both teams in the top-30, but being at the national meet is a reminder to us that we still have a long way to go as a program. There’s a lot we want to accomplish as a team at Oneonta, and we need to keep working at it to get there. I know we can be have a much stronger impact outdoors.”

Historic Career Comes to a Close

Student athletes, representing men’s and women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, softball, field hockey and baseball, hosted 125 children ages 5-11 for “Kids in Sports Day”. The event took place on Saturday, Jan 24th in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House. SUNY Oneonta has been hosting this event for 16 years now and it continues to be one of the highlight community service events of the year for the athletics department. This event continues to grow and this year’s event was the largest group of children ever to attend. “SUNY Oneonta student athletes always look forward to this event. A kind hearted person showed them the way to a healthy, active lifestyle and I hope our efforts contribute to the well being of our community’s children. A huge thank you to our coaches for caring so much, it was a great day,” said Athletics Director Tracey Ranieri. The student athletes of SUNY Oneonta enjoy every opportunity to mentor young, aspiring athletes. The inclement weather on Saturday morning did not deter the attendance and the smile on so many children’s faces as they participated in the activities. It was joyful for the not only the kids but also for the parents, coaches and student athletes alike. The Red Dragon student athletes collectively were able to give back in the same way that someone gave of their time to help them when they were younger.

Junior baseball captain Joe Franke stated, “It was fun being able to play sports with the kids today, hopefully one day they will be a Red Dragon student athlete”. The children who participated in this free event were treated to loads of fun and skill learning as each team spent time teaching the skills of their specific sport. The day was split into two sessions and the children rotated to four different stations during each session that lasted 25 minutes each. Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury), who is a captain of the women’s tennis team said, “It was a great way to give back to the community, as opposed to doing something where we don’t necessarily see the effect it has. We can see how we are helping the kids of the community branch out.” “When I see how the children smile and interact with student athletes and how our players also feel about themselves after the event I know what we are doing is truly special,” said tennis coach Lonnie Mitchel. “As tennis is a sport for a

lifetime you just never know what will resonate with these youngsters just by picking up a tennis racquet and hitting a tennis ball. Sustained relationships, challenging work and a true connection to your neighbors is one of the keys to happiness and today we saw a lot of happy children and student athletes.”

Field Hockey coach, Kelly Kingsbury said it best and simply by adding, “The best part of the event is watching the student-athletes interact with so many children.”

Women’s Swimming and Diving has Most Successful SUNYAC Championship in History

Eight broken records sounds like a successful conference championship weekend; add a second place finish with 489 points with three swimmers claiming individual titles and you have the best finish in program history for women’s swimming and diving. That’s exactly what happened at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY February 19-21.

Seniors Carly Cahill, Hilliary Chocko and Kelly Ruf, and junior Taylor Waldrop plus a trio of relay teams all made their way to the record books. On the first day of competition, the 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Cahill, sophomore Sarah Greco, Waldrop and freshman Kylie Loforte set the first record of the weekend with a time of 1:39.30 in the preliminaries. On the same day, Cahill and Loforte later teamed with Chocko and Lauren junior Zentko finished third en route to the 400-yard medley relay record with a time of 3:58.34.

The second day of competition saw Waldrop, sophomore Nicole DiFilippo, Ruf, and Greco set the 200 yard medley relay at 1:51.37 in the preliminaries, the same team, with sub Loforte for Greco, broke the record again in the finals with a fifth place finishing time of 1:50.76.

Cahill set the first individual record on day two with her first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall at 58.81. Chocko’s first of two individual record setting performances came on day two in the preliminaries of the 100 yard breaststroke where she used a 1:07.52 finish to qualify for finals. Chocko came in a sixth place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke where she finished in 2:30.00 on day three. Ruf set her record on the last day of competition placing fourth in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:12.54. Lastly, Waldrop used a record setting 2:07.92 finish to bring home a SUNYAC Title in the 200 yard backstroke on the final day of competition.

Zentko posted a pair of individual championships, first in the 400-yard individual medley with a finals time of 4:38.93 and in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:38.61. Cahill added a bronze medal finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.97.
