February 2020 Newsletter
Dear Parents and Carers,
Our school vision to celebrate our capacity to learn something new each day
continues throughout our adult lives. Learning doesn’t cease because we are no
longer in formal education. At Chadwell, we embrace our responsibility in
ensuring that the building blocks for learning are established upon a secure
foundation.
We believe that learning is wider than just academic achievement; developing
self-awareness, resilience when faced with challenges, fostering positive social
interactions with their peers and promoting British Values are all key to
ensuring that our pupils are equipped with the necessary skills for successful
future learning. It is important that each and every one of us, including the
contribution of parents & carers, plays a part in each child's learning journey
throughout their time at Chadwell.
This academic year, due to the success of the ‘Open Classroom’ initiative in
Early Years and Year 1, we have taken the decision to extend the initiative
across the school. Parents and Carers of pupils in Nursery and Reception will be
familiar with the ‘Open Classroom’ model, which provides opportunity for
parents and carers to work alongside their child during a session that is
delivered by class teachers. As a school, it is an opportunity to share with
parents and carers ‘best practice’ in approaching concepts of learning. Some
sessions have already taken place this term and initial feedback has been
positive. If you have been unable to attend a session this term, I would
encourage you to attend a session in the summer term. Dates for upcoming
sessions will be published in due course.
In September, the school embarked upon its journey of fostering a culture of
Visible Learning (definition: when the educators become evaluators of their own
teaching so that students learn how to become their own teachers and grow
into lifelong learners). Our starting point with parents and carers in the autumn
term, was to offer workshops that introduced the concept of ‘Self-Regulation’ –
the ability to monitor and manage our behaviour, thoughts and feelings in
context. There are many benefits to pupils who are able to self-regulate: 1. Help
identify the type of learner they are; 2. Help with productivity; 3. Help with
communications – communication of needs; 4. Help in knowing when to seek
help. At school, pupils are continually provided with the opportunity to develop
the ability to self-regulate in a variety of contexts. There has also been a big
focus on pupils taking greater responsibility for moving around the building
with greater independence. Introducing the ‘soft start’ has demonstrated that
pupils are able to take responsibility for taking themselves straight to class,
where they are greeted by a staff member. This has led to a calmer, more
productive start to the school day. Pupils in Key Stage 2 have been set the task
of walking to and from assembly independently and in doing so, demonstrate
the ability to take greater responsibility for how they move around the building
collectively. Their progress continues to be encouraging.
Finally, I would like to remind parents and carers of the importance of ensuring
that their child arrives at school on time. Thank you to all of those parents and
carers who ensure that their child arrives at school on time. I am usually on duty
before school each day and there are some days where there is a steady flow of
pupils arriving after the official start time of 9.10am and often it is the same
families. As adults, it is important to ensure that we instil the importance of
‘being on time’ for things as this will place them in good stead for life beyond
school, especially in the world of work.

School Council Update!
During this term School Council have had a meeting every week.
Sometimes this is in class where they have been getting ideas and
feedback on how to improve school life from their peers. They
have been meeting together to pass on the information to the
other School Councillors and discuss what should be done.
School Council have compiled a list of things that they want to ask
Mr Walker about to see whether a few things can be improved or
changed. A meeting is arranged for this half term when two of our
School Council members will discuss these issues with Mr Walker
and then feedback to the rest of School Council and their peers.
Looking forward, they are planning something for Mental Health
Week and also an event to raise money for a charity.

SEND COFFEE MORNING
On Friday 14th
February 2020 we held a SEND Coffee
Morning for parents and carers which focussed on the
emotional well-being of children. The event was very
well attended and lots of useful information was
shared.
The children joined the group at the end and delivered a
short series of presentations for the parents and carers
to enjoy and then they stayed for a drink of juice
and a biscuit.
Thank you very much to all who attended.
We look forward to welcoming more parents at our next SEND Coffee Morning event that will take place
on Friday 3rd April.
SEND COFFEE MORNING
We were delighted to welcome so many parents, friends and
relatives to Franklin and Hawking’s Cornet Performance on
Tuesday 11th February.
These classes have only been learning the cornet once a week
since September and have all made amazing progress - so much
so that they were able to perform three different pieces:
‘Trumpet Blues’, ‘Trumpet Jam’ and ‘We Will Rock You’.
Some children were especially brave and were able to perform a
solo improvisation, taking inspiration for the musical
accompaniment.
As teachers, we are extremely proud of them and hope that some
of them will choose to take advantage of the offer of additional
brass tuition that will be offered by Redbridge Music Service.
Thanks to Mr Davison and Mr Martin for their continued
support.
Turing will be learning cornet after February half term.

Late Arrivals
For those children who arrive late to school due to an
unavoidable appointment, they must arrive by
11am at the latest.
Children arriving later than 11am will be refused entry and will be
asked to return at the start of afternoon
registration (1pm).
School Start Times School starts at 9.10am each day.
The gates open at 9am and children can go straight to class.
Gates close at 9.10am.
In order for our children to gain the greatest benefit from their
education, it is vital that they attend school regularly and should also
be at school on time every day unless the reason for the absence is un-
avoidable.
Children arriving late for school will be
recorded in the late book. Consistent
lateness will be followed up and may result in the

Hockey Competition
An incredible experience for our young year 6 children who took part in the
Redbridge Hockey Competition this academic year. We attended the Redbridge
Sports Centre on Wednesday 26th
February with some very talented hockey
players representing our school.
What felt like the coldest day of the year, the children were keen to get going!
We arrived at 10:30 with our first game starting at 10:45. Mr Haywood gave the
team a team talk and gave each child a position on the pitch. The first two
games were goalless ending in 0-0’s so it was important for us to score in our
final group game of the day! With spirits very high with not conceding a goal,
we had enough confidence to score two throughout the final game ending in a
3-0 win. When the game finished the children had to wait 15 minutes for the
results to see whether we qualified to go through to the quarter finals. Good
news! We won the group, giving us the opportunity to enter the quarter finals
of the competition.
Quarter and Semi Finals!
Chadwell got into their positions to start the quarter finals and was ready to go
one step further! The children were slightly nervous but Mr Haywood gave
them a team talk to calm their nerves, this helps the children and made them
feel comfortable and confident. The whistle blew to begin and we gave it our
best shot, and our best shot paid off and came out winners, 2-0. Chadwell are
through to the Semi-finals! Spirts flying high, a good positive environment at
this moment in time. Again, we got ourselves ready, didn’t let anything get in
our way off hopefully reaching the finals. The game started and Snaresbrook
was on the front foot but Chadwell didn’t give up. We pushed, pushed and
pushed all the way and got our break! We scored to make it 1-0, exciting times.
We eventually went on to score another goal making it 2-0 and that was the
final result.
Hockey Competition
Finals
This is the first time Chadwell Primary School has ever reached a final of a hockey
competition so it was an exciting time but we had to stay focused and concen-
trate on our game! This was a very difficult game because the other school was
very experienced and was very good. We worked so hard and worked together as
a team throughout the final and never gave up and gave it our all! Unfortunately
we couldn’t get the result we wanted and lost 3-0, but what an incredible journey
this was for all the children, especially the first set of year 6s to ever reach a hock-
ey competition final.
The boys and girls who got Chadwell to our first ever final were:

Danielle Nabia
Harrison Marcel Owais Faris
