Dicovery of Cornwall :

In the south-western most tip, Cornwall is a bit like the Riviera for our English neighbors thanks to its mild climate, the beauty of its rocky coasts and its undulating hills. This region is the most southwestern county in England, and is best known for its fabulous landscapes : a panorama of deep, wooded valleys, wide sea view, combined with lush and colorful old market towns, with charming fishing villages and quaint hamlets along the river. The Cornwall Peninsula, along the rugged coastline, is charming by its isolation and wildness. Yet, Cornwall is not just its landscapes. For students in geography, Cornwall is well worth visiting because of its attractive landscape with a variety of ecosystems, its culture and traditions as well as a long industrial heritage: its mining landscape has been recognized a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There are traces of ancient architecture, such as stone circles and the remains of villages of the Iron Age and Celtic crosses throughout the country. Cornwall is certainly renowned for its peace and quietness, but when the sun goes down, another facet of Cornwall appears: there one really knows how to party! With its reputation as the best city for nightlife, Newquay is the place to go for a fantastic all-nighter. Or you can go partying in the college town of Falmouth. In sports, forget football: enjoy the spectacular scenery of Cornwall and try adventure activities. Cornwall is one of the best places to surf in Britain. Finally, if you come to Cornwall to enjoy the Cornish pasties (pies) and cream teas, you will not be disappointed. But there are many other culinary delights to Cornwall.

Temperature patterns are shaped by the wind sea (winter temperatures = 5 to 15 ° C and summer = 15 to 25 ° C). The air is humid and temperatures are mild. One characteristic of this region is the permanent presence of fog. The fog may last several days. However, it never freezes in this locality. Monday, April 22nd Discovery of Bodmin Moor :………………………………………….The 150 square miles of moorland is a great place for walking and brings you closer to the fascinating landscape, both natural and manmade. Such is the importance of the moor it has a whole swathe of designations including World Heritage Site status which recognizes the importance of the tin mining industry dating back over 4,000 years. It has also been named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and most of the moor has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest. From the top of Rough Tor and Brown Willy, the two highest peaks in Cornwall, the views are spectacular, while below you ancient buildings, standing stones and medieval farms add to the feeling of a land full of history waiting to be explored. Over the years Bodmin Moor has inspired many a story and once you have visited the area you will soon realize why. The oldest tales would have been handed down through the generations, passed from storyteller to storyteller as they journeyed around the county.Bodmin Moor is a home to Ravens, Ferns, Lichens and Mosses, Buzzards mewing overhead, beautiful yellow-flowered Gorse, stunted thorn trees, and a wonderful variety of birds, wild flowers, small mammals and livestock. The moor is a wild place and remains untamed, yet at the same time it is a sympathetically managed working landscape. On the open moorland there are marshes and mires, treacherous to the un-wary walker.www.bestofbodminmoor.co.uk/bodmin-moor/my

The value of this site for students geographers is multiple: natural site is subject to strong protection from the region (site with fragile natural tourism) part is listed protected park. In addition, we find that the man-environment interaction is present, an important concept in geography. This environment also includes many animal and plant species and a multitude of rocks.

After the visit, we will go to St-Austell. During the journey (about 45 minutes), you can admire the green landscape of Cornwall.

Why do geographers have a special interest in it?A must in CornwallA project of environmental and social interest, issues approaching our

consideration. If you want more explanations : http://www.edenproject.com/

At the scale of the region, it’s Cornwall’s program for economic regeneration but also working on projects around the world. It is a place of learning, gathering, a place of artistic expression: a little corner of paradise on an old clay mine.

Eden project: What’s it all about?

An environmental, social and charity enterprise: two large greenhouses where we will reproduce a tropical and Mediterranean climate for growing flora associated with it.

St-Ives is a coastal city in Cornwall . It is situated on the shore of St-Ives Bay. Thus, it was isolated for several centuries. This delightful village on the seafront was one of the first harbours of Cornwall. Fishing, mining activity and farming carried St-Ives economy for a long time. The city is, nowadays, a seaside resort. Four beaches surround the town : Porthmeor ( a surfing beach), Porthgwidden (sandy cove), harbour and Porthminster offering sublime sceneries. Surfers look here for rollers and tourists look for sunshine. St-Ives is also famous for its modern art. An office of the Tate Gallery has opened. Many artists settled in this village. To discover St-Ives, we suggest you a walk in its alleys…

Most visits are scheduled outdoors. Picnic will allow us to enjoy the exceptional landscape framework offered by Cornwall.

Page 13: Go to Cornwall

Summary of elements included in the tour : - Bus : 5560 € ( in reality, only 1160 € or 29 € per person)- Ferry : 84 €/pers- Meal in St-austell : £19.45 per person or 24 €- Hotel in Par : 1 210,90 euro or 30,30 € per person - Eden Project : 578 £ or 17,8 € per person- Visit of St Ives : 6 £ per person or 7,40 € per person- Hotel in St ives : 590,40 € or 14,8 € per person- Geevor : £ 6 or 7,4 €- Hotel Brighton : 577,98 € or14,5 €

Total price : 230 € per person

Transport, either bus or ferry are relatively expensive, amounting to 5560€ for the bus. This is why many efforts on the part of the University of Burgundy in Dijon and all 3rd year students of geography were made. The geography department associated with AEHGD (Association of Students of History and Geography of Dijon) subsidizes 4000€.Futhermore, with the approach of the festive season, L3 students will offer their multiple services in the streets of Dijon! Sales of cakes, chocolate and mulled wine and packaging future gifts, all in a magical atmosphere of winter and Christmas markets.Only the price of the Channel crossing (go and return) of 84€ will be asked to them for transport.

Page 14: Go to Cornwall

Why this choice of transport?....................................................

The boat trip is several possibilities because of the many connections between France and England is less restrictive than other modes of transport.………………………………………..The airport is directly eliminated because transfers in French airports (Gatwick generally) would have been necessary. Flying to Corwall is thus too complex and also very expensive. The train has also been ruled out because of the privatization of the rail network. An obligatory passage through London Paddington then change for a local Cornish train company would have made the difficult journey. The bus therefore seemed the best option to travel easily within the territory of Cornwall to avoid changing modes constantly.

The bus company Trans 2000 Dijon (10 Avenue Gaston Roupnel in Marsannay-la-Côte) will follow us during the whole trip : three days in Cornwall and the combined round trip crossings France-England and England-France with ferry "MyFerryLink", southern Britain being served by many ferry lines from the continental coasts of the English Channel. Greener than a car, more flexible than the train and often cheaper than the plane, the bus appears as an essential means of transportation. Some students request it for trips to the other end of Europe, others for cultural or professional circuits. Trans 2000 Dijon also met our needs for this trip: they transport us over any distance on one or more days. 5 to 55 seats, the lineup is very diverse in terms of capacity.
