A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT Sixth Sunday of Easter Weekend of May 16/17 2020

Philip understood very well Jesus’ words: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” We learn of Philip’s devotion to prayer, evangelizing and healing in the region of Samaria; made up of communities that would not be very receptive to the followers of Jesus. Philip is a model steward, living his discipleship day by day in the Lord without counting the cost. Good stewards summon the courage to proclaim the Lord no matter where they are, and to serve Him by ministering to others even under the most adverse of circumstances. As an Easter people, eager to rejoice in the Lord, let us reflect this week on how we are living out our own commitment to discipleship in Christ Jesus.

Felipe entendió muy bien las palabras de Jesús: “Si me amas, guardarás mis mandamientos”. Nos enteramos de la devoción de Felipe por la oración, la evangelización y la curación en la región de Samaria; formado por comunidades que no serían muy receptivas a los seguidores de Jesús. Felipe es un corresponsable modelo, que vive su discipulado día a día en el Señor sin contar el costo. Los buenos corresponsables reúnen el valor para proclamar al Señor sin importar dónde se encuentren, y para servirlo ministrando a otros incluso en las circunstancias más adversas. Como pueblo de Pascua, ansiosos de regocijarnos en el Señor, reflexionemos esta semana sobre cómo estamos viviendo nuestro propio compromiso de discipulado en Cristo Jesús.

Creo que uno de los comentarios más esclarecedores que el Papa Francisco ha hecho hasta ahora en su papado es que la Iglesia es un “hospital de campaña” en el mundo. Él cree que nuestra comunidad de fe está llamada a “sanar heridas” y a “calentar los corazones de los fieles”. Esto es lo que Jesús modeló tan bien en los Evangelios, y estamos llamados a participar activamente en su vida y ministerio aquí y ahora.

Como persona visual, la imagen de nuestro Santo Padre evoca imágenes para mí, como la historia del Buen Samaritano, las unidades de atención médica de las fuerzas armadas y el trabajo de la Beata Madre Teresa. También recuerda a los primeros misioneros que llevaron el cristianismo a personas de todo el mundo. La idea de un asistente de “hospital de campaña” me parece algo abrumadora. Pero siendo buenos corresponsables del Evangelio, estamos llamados a apoyar y servir a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en algunos de los momentos más difíciles de sus vidas. Recientemente, fui seleccionada para servir como jurado en un caso penal. Fue mi primera experiencia y me pareció una experiencia inquietante y emocional. Los temores y las lágrimas de los testigos y del acusado aportaron una dimensión muy humana y vulnerable a este proceso legal. Aunque el resultado del juicio se basó en la evidencia y el testimonio brindado, para mí, el rostro de Jesús estaba en todas partes en la sala del tribunal.

Después de que concluyó el juicio, me pregunté si los trabajadores del “hospital de campaña” ministraban de alguna manera a quienes participaron en el juicio en sus respectivas parroquias o comunidades de culto. ¿Alguien ha sido visitado, o han rezado, o ha recibido un oído compasivo y estimulante? Ciertamente lo espero. Había tanta oportunidad aquí.

Hasta que Jesús regrese, nuestra Iglesia siempre tendrá que ser un “hospital de campaña”. Agradezco a aquellos que tienen dones especiales de empatía, compasión, coraje y amor, y los usan para ser Jesús en el mundo. Y le pido que ore conmigo para que todos reconozcamos dónde estamos llamados a sanar heridas y corazones cálidos para que podamos compartir el amor de Cristo y ser testigos de las Buenas Nuevas.

Estamos llamados a apoyar y servir a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en algunos de los momentos

más difíciles de sus vidas.

PRAY Spend time with God each day. Read the Bible or a devotional. Meditate. Listen to prayerful music.

PAY ATTENTION God is with you! Look for God in the care of others and those you care for. See God in the beauty around you.

GROW IN GRATITUDE Make this a time to be grateful for the blessings of life, faith relationships, gifts, talent and resources.

REACH OUT Reach out to those who are fragile, alone, or in need. Call or video chat with elderly neighbors.

GIVE Give to your parish. Your faith community is sustained through your giving.

CONNECT Check in with other parishioners. Gather with others by phone or virtually to stay connected even when physically apart.

SHARE FAITH As you talk with family and friends, share the consolation and hope you have through your faith in Jesus.

KEEP SABBATH Sabbath is a time of rest and renewal in faith. Make this moment of physical distance a time for Sabbath.

I believe one of the most enlightening comments Pope Francis has made thus far in his papacy is that the Church is a “field hospital” in the world. He believes our community of faith is called to “heal wounds” and to “warm the hearts of the faithful.” This is what Jesus modeled so well in the Gospels, and we are called to actively participate in his life and ministry here and now.

As a visual person, our Holy Father’s image conjures up for me images such as the story of the Good Samaritan, armed forces medical care units and the work of Blessed Mother Teresa. It also brings to mind early missionaries who brought Christianity to people around the globe. I find the idea of a “field hospital” attendant somewhat overwhelming. But being good stewards of the Gospel, we are called to stand with and to serve our brothers and sisters during some of the most difficult times in their lives. This is a tremendous challenge and yet a sacred honor.

Recently, I was selected to serve as a juror in a criminal case. It was my first experience and I found it an unsettling and emotional experience for me. The fears and tears of witnesses as well as the defendant brought a very human and vulnerable dimension to this legal process. Though the outcome of the trial was based on the evidence and testimony provided, for me, the face of Jesus was everywhere in the courtroom.

After the trial concluded, I wondered if any of those who participated in the trial were ministered to in some way by the “field hospital” workers in their respective parishes or worshipping communities. Was anyone visited, prayed for or given a compassionate ear and encouragement? I certainly hope so. There was so much opportunity here.

Until Jesus returns, our Church will always need to be a “field hospital.” I thank those who have special gifts of empathy, compassion, courage, and love, and use them to be Jesus in the world. And, I ask you to pray with me that we will all recognize where we are called to heal wounds and warm hearts so we can share the love of Christ and be a witness to the Good News.

We are called to stand with and to serve our brothers and sisters during some of the most difficult times in their lives.

What Is Your Hope?

We have hopes for ourselves and others. We hope for good health, for fulfilling

work, for settled lives for our children. As valuable as such hope might be, that is not what Peter is referring to in today’s second reading. He is talking about religious hope. Not hope that, but hope in. Not hope that God will give us what we ask, that God will supply what we cannot accomplish, that God will reward our faithfulness. That is also valid hope, but it is still not religious hope.

Genuine religious hope is hope or trust in God. Period. Trust in God when we have no idea what the future might bring. Trust in God when all our best plans crumble before us. Trust in God when we face the terrors of illness and death. This is a trust or hope for which we do not provide God plans to follow so our needs get met as we think they should be. It is a hope that enables us to place ourselves into the hands of God. Period.

This kind of hope asks for nothing and expects everything. Why? Because we are convinced that God loves us with a passion we can’t possibly imagine and, therefore, wants what is best for us. This might seem like an impossible hope, but the reading goes on to list reasons to hope. God’s love is exemplified by Jesus Christ, who “suffered for sins…that he might lead you to God” (1 Peter 3:18). Who could ask for more?

After Mass a friend told me I belonged to “the priesthood of believers.” I’m not a priest! What did she mean?

At baptism, all of us became part of the laity. The word laity comes from the Greek word laos, which means “people.” The laity are the people

of God. As people of God, we all share in the priesthood of Christ. This is why the Church speaks of the “priesthood of all believers,” because when we were baptized we were incorporated into Christ’s priesthood. Each of us is called to exercise our common priesthood within the Church, strengthening and serving each other. The exercise of priesthood means, above all, to serve.

The Church speaks of Jesus as our High Priest, the one who offers himself as the sacrificial animal. Jesus is the priest and victim, offering himself as a sacrifice to God. The priesthood that Jesus exercises is one of self-giving. All those who are called to the priesthood of Christ are called to serve as he did, offering themselves in a spirit of service and love.

This “priesthood of all believers” shouldn’t be confused with the sacrament of Holy Orders, which ordains to the office of bishop, priest, or deacon. These men are called by God and ordained by the Church to exercise the particular ministry of preaching the good news and administering the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. During Mass, the ordained priest represents Christ and also acts on behalf of all the people of God. His sacramental priesthood represents the common priesthood of the whole Church.
