House-style Of Q Magazine

The Masthead

As you can see from these examples of Q magazines front covers, the mast head is always placed in the top left corner. This is so, as soon as the reader has a look at their (Q) magazine, the first thing they'll see is the mast head, as well as the image of the artist, and they'll automatically be aware that it's a Q magazine. They use the same masthead in all of the magazines they produce, with the same font, layout and colours. This is because they want to keep the consistency throughout the magazine. Sometimes, in some magazines, the masthead may be overlapped by the image of the artist, and other times it is in front of the image of the artist, as you can see in the examples of the front covers. This masthead can also be seen as a logo, this is because it is only one letter and the effect of this is that it will be memorised by the target audience and it is straight to the point.

Images

Q magazine use a variety of different shot types of the artists on their front covers. In the examples of the front covers provided, the type shots used are, close up, medium and long shot. The type of shot used of the artist on the front cover is all for the purpose of how they would like their magazine to come across.

All the images used on the front cover of their magazines are model suggests, which means that they are doing the kind of pose that they are instructed to do by the photographer.

The artists are always dressed purposefully for the magazines they produce, this is to make the magazine come across as unique and to make the meaning of they are trying to advertise come across clear to the target audience. This has been done in all the magazines that the produce, which again keeps the consistency of their magazines.

In the Lana Del Rey magazine, the artist has been placed in front of the mast head. This suggests that the artist is more important than the logo in this magazine. This has also been done, so the audience are focused on the artist and not distracted by the masthead. Q magazine have done this with most of their magazines.

Layout

The layout Is quite similar in all Q magazines. The splash and titles create a frame around the artist, making the artist as the centre of attention for the audience. This would also make the target audience want to buy the magazine, because they're favourite music artist is on the front cover.

The text doesn't go on the image of the artist, unless it is the name of that artist, making it clear to the audience of who the artist in their front cover is, this is a good technique, because not everyone will know who the artist in their front cover is, so with the use of text on the artist or next to the artist will make it clear to those people who the name of the artist.

The artists image is most of the time placed right in the middle. This makes it clear that the image of the artist is the most important on the magazine. Also, by having the image in the middle makes it eye catching for the target audience.

Having the same layout on all their magazines makes it very easy for their target audience to recognise and find their magazine when it is placed on the shelf along side other magazines.
