Nas performs Illmatic in its entirety. That phrase alone should be enough to have hip-hop heads salivating, let alone it actually happening.

Illmatic is arguably the most revered rap album in the genre’s history by one of the greatest MCs ever to pick up a mic. For the first time ever, Nas will perform Illmatic live in Sydney from start to finish.

When Nas released Illmatic in 1994, it was off the back of tremendous hype he’d built through his debut appearance on Main Source’s Live at the Barbeque and 1992’s Halftime, his debut solo release and Illmatic’s first single. The album was a relative commercial fizzer, debut-ing at number 12 on the Billboard 200 and its five singles failing to gain much traction on radio. But it sent critics and hip-hop lovers into an absolute frenzy. The Source magazine, hip-hop’s bible in the ‘90s, gave Illmatic a five-mic review - an extremely prestigious achievement and unheard of for a debut release.

In the years following, word steadily spread and a consensus was reached - the hip-hop world had a masterpiece on its hands.

WHAT'S ON

She and Him, that beguiling pairing of Zooey Deschanel and M Ward are back with a ridiculously catchy collection of no-fooling classics.

Having piqued this reviewers interest with their delightfully whimsical A Very She and Him Christmas a couple of years ago, I awaited this collection with a certain amount of anticipation. And I wasn’t disap-pointed. While I am less than impressed with Deschanel’s acting chops, her singing is right on the money here - especially on their rendition of the Dusty Springfield classic Stay Awhile and the Vera Lynn standard We’ll Meet Again. Other standouts include Herb Alpert’s That Girl’s In Love With You and the Frank Sinatra/DeCastro Sisters’ Teach me Tonight.

This album was recorded completely live with a 20-piece orchestra and the result is a very warm sounding record - helped in no small part by Deschanel’s breathy vocals.

This hilarious updating of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol from director Richard Donner is still one of Bill Murray’s finest hours. Frank Cross (Murray) runs a US TV station which is planning a live adaptation of Dickens’ Christmas Carol. Frank’s childhood wasn’t a particularly pleasant one, and so he doesn’t really appreciate the Christmas spirit. With the help of the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, Frank realises he must change.

Aussie Eric Bana, hamming it up with a bad New York accent, stars as a tough and sceptical cop who begins investigating a series of increasingly creepy crimes with a basis in the paranormal. Bana hooks up with a hard drinking priest (Edgar Ramirez) who is schooled in the art of exorcism and the pair set about combatting a spate of demonic possessions that are terrorising the city.

While some of the scares do work well, a reliance on cliché and forshadow-ing music or repeated imagery pre-empting a lot of the tension, left this film lacking.

If you’re looking for a decent “based-on-a-true-story” paranormal flick, check out The Conjuring, director Scott Derrick-son’s previous effort The Excorsism of Emily Rose.

From Babylon to Byron

Save for a whistle-stop metro stadium tour in 2009, it’s been quite some time, since David Gray’s Aussie fans have had the chance to see him in

the flesh. It was 2006 when Gray was last here as part of the Byron Bay Bluesfest and the UK singer-songwriter will be making a welcome return visit to the iconic festival next year.

“Yeah, we had an absolutely brilliant time when we were at Bluesfest last - definitely one that will live long in the memory” Gray said.

“It was great - everyone was well up for it and we had the unusual luxury of having an entire day off before the show so we were well chilled out also - so we definitely can’t wait to come back for another crack.”

Gray is currently globetrotting on the back of his critically acclaimed tenth record Mutineers and TE was lucky enough to grab Grey on a quick inter-tour furlough.

“Well, Mutineers was released back in June and it’s been pretty much non-stop ever since, which is a good problem to have,” he laughed.

“So basically, right now I’m home in London for a couple of weeks to kind of get my head together, then I’m heading back to the States for a charity show in Boston, then more US shows, more Euro-pean shows, some more US shows then down to Australia.”

The reason for this flurry of activity is, undoubtedly, Gray’s mesmerising new album Mutineers - a set that critics are calling his best since his breakthrough 1998 album White Flag.

While still replete with a similar stark aesthetic (piano ballads, haunting acous-tica et al), Muntineers is a much more densely layered record than previous releases, with his usual themes of lonli-ness and regret eschewed for a decidedly sunnier outlook.

Gray, who said he had been suffering from a kind of creative ennui since White Flag, added that he was keen to tear down his usual approach to writing in search of something new.

To that end, Gray enlisted the services of Andy Barlow - one half of 90s UK downbeat electronica duo Lamb to oversee produc-tion duties. While such a pairing might, at face value seem odd, given Gray’s desire to “step out of the box”, coupled with the sounds Barlow had pulled for the likes of Placebo, Damien Rice and Elbow, Barlow was the perfect choice.

“Andy really took me out of my comfort zone in that he didn’t let me make tracks in the way I wanted to or was used to,” he said.

“We took so many risks on the album and there were periods where I was deeply uncomfortable because I was so far out of that comfort zone, an I was sure that it wasn’t going to work, But we just kept at looking for something different and when it all finally came together, I realised that he was on the right track all along.

“There was a real sense of regeneration with this record and I felt really empow-ered creatively after tearing away all of those old ways of doing things and recon-

necting with the simple joy of discovery.” Gray, who was at the crest of the late 90s

singer-songwriter boom with White Flag and its singles Babylon, Please Forgive Me, This Year’s Love, Sail Away and Say Hello Wave Goodbye, said that, while he never expected his career to take such a radical upward trajectory after White Flag, the secret to staying at the top of his creative game was discipline.

“I knew White Ladder was a good record but I never expected it to take off like it did - it kind of came out under the radar and a lot of people missed the boat initially, but they caught up,” he laughed.

“I have learned that you do need to be extremely disciplined - especially now that I have a family because family and success can pull you in so many differ-ent directions, I mean, barely a day goes by where there’s nothing to do.

“For me, though, songwriting is a series of small steps and before I know it I’m running - it’s all about fits and starts for me.”

Having jammed together in hotel rooms for years, after first meeting on the Oz leg of the Vans Warped Tour, Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson and Scott Russo, frontman for So-Cal punk stal-warts Unwritten Law are teaming up for a bit of pre-Christmas lovliness at the Cambridge this weekend so dust of your crackers and put your best Santa boots on.

The pair first joined forces, earlier in the year, for a couple of shows in Sydney and Melbourne, while Unwritten Law were here for the Hits and Pits festival and those shows were so well received, they figured they’d have another crack.

Speaking to TE last week, Jamieson was tight lipped on what the shows would contain, but if you know anything about Jamieson, you should know that this is one show sure to be chock-a-block full of Yuletide surprises.

This is definitely a rare opportunity to catch these two formidable front-men alone and together, with a show that promises to be charged with raw chemistry, oodles of free flow-ing banter and some pretty decent choons as well.

Gareth Hudson has established a remarkable early career as a composer, performer and record producer. Initially, Gareth studied classical piano and composition at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music.

After completing his music degree, Gareth toured the UK and Europe with his outfit The Good, perform-ing at festivals such as the Edin-burgh Fringe, The Whitby World Music Festival, and Milan’s Dolce & Gabanna International Fashion Show.

Currently, he performs and composes for Hudson Arc, and has performed venues and festivals around Germany, The UK, France, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and well as various tours and radio appearances in Australia.

He is also a key member of the award winning Buddy Knox Blues Band. Churchill for the win

Given that much of 2014 has involved touring a lot of foreign roads, in support of his latest album Silence/Win, it’s no surprise that Merimbula-

bred songwriter Kim Churchill can’t wait to get back on the Aussie highways and by-ways.

“It’s been way to long since I’ve been back home as I’ve been kept pretty busy this year overseas so I totally can’t wait to get back,” Churchill told TE.

“The amount of support the album has been getting, especially on Triple J, has been great, so it will be awesome to come back and re-connect with the home-grown fans.”

While touring on home soil is always an enticing prospect for Churchill, his increas-ingly lengthy overseas stints have been more than worth it.

The blues/roots/folkie recently signed a worldwide publishing deal with Sony ATV as well as inking a deal in the UK with Atlantic Records and some bucket-list European festival slots, to boot.

“It’s all been going really well especially in England,” he said.

“The Atlantic deal is just awesome and I was also lucky enough to get to play

Glastonbury this year and the Beautiful Days festival. I also did a support run with Seth Lakeman, played surf competitions in France as well as three North American yours so, yeah, it has been busy, but it’s a great problem to have.”

While Silence/Win still revels in a similar rootsy stock-in trade as his previous long players With Sword and Shield, Kim Churchill and Detail of Distance, this time around, there is a much wider scope, both sonically and lyrically.

Churchill said that the new album repre-sents somewhat of a change in approach, most notably in that it is the first time he has enlisted the services of a producer - Warne Livesey (Midnight Oil) - something the songwriter said helped open up more creative channels.

“I think that, after a while, when you learn more and more about the intricacies and subtleties of songwriting, you an get harder to please,” Churchill said.

“So, this time around, I wanted to kind of forget about all of that and just write what-ever I felt like and having Warne on board took a lot of recording weight off my mind so I could concentrate my energies more to the songwriting instead of the minutia of recording and that really helped free me up to focus on the songs.”

Marcia’s still amazing

Though younger audiences may be more familiar with Marcia Hines from her appearance as a judge on Australian Idol, the talented performer has a long

and impressive history in the music industry pre-Idol including several top 10 albums, hit singles and roles in stage productions includ-ing Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair.

Now, 20 years after her last originals album, Hines has released Amazing, a collection of tracks written by Hines and her writing partners Tom Diesel and Ron E Jones.

“The plan between us was we wanted to write an album in which every song could stand up on its own,” Hineds said of the new album.

“Each song was really strong and I do believe that we succeeded to do that.”

Included onthe album is a track called Remedy which features guest vocals by none other than Aussie actor Russell Crowe.

The two have been friends for some time and have worked together on a previous musical project.

“Well, some years ago Russell invited me to sing on one of his tracks on one of his albums when he was working with the band The

Ordinary Fear of God. I went into the studio one night and sang with him on a track called Testify and we really enjoyed working together,” she said.

“When I wrote Remedy I thought ‘oh gee we really need someone different to sing on this’ and I called Russell up and I said ‘listen, I’ve got this song and I was wondering if you’d be interested?’ In true Russell form he said ‘oh look send it to me, if I like it I’ll let you know’,” she laughed.

“It was just really cool, no pressure. So I sent it to him and he said he liked it. Russell then came into the recording studio in Sydney and he was just across it, he just knew exactly what he was doing.

“It was fantastic.”With a resume like Marcia’s it’s easy to

wonder if there’s anything left to do?“What’s not left to do?” Marcia laughed.“There’s so much and it’s funny because a

friend of mine is here from America, they’re the most extraordinary singer.

“We just went on a walk and all we did - as you can imagine - was talk about music.

“I said to him ‘isn’t it the most amazing thing we open our mouths and this incred-ible sound comes out?’

“I am still fascinated by music and I’m still fascinated by the instrument that I am and other people are.”
