Brazilian death/thrash metal icons, Sepultura are making their long-awaited return to Australia this October. The hugely influential outfit hailing from Belo Horizonte, Brazil have not toured Down Under for eleven years so this news is like manna from heaven to Aussie metal fans.

Since forming in 1983, Sepultura have released thirteen aggressively rich and furiously power-ful studio albums. Their live set today hosts songs from their extensive career, including some of their finest moments from albums such as Roots, Chaos A.D., Kairos, Beneath The Remains, and their brutal new album, The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be The Heart.

Sepultura, which translates to ‘grave’ in Portuguese, formed with humble beginnings but their trajectory took them to the top of the worldwide metal music scene.

WHAT'S ON It may’ve been a while, four years in

fact, since we’ve heard anything from New Zealand rockers Shihad, but after just one listen to their latest and ninth studio effort it’s pretty clear that these guys are as potent as ever.

Produced by Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman, Fvey is an album, unlike their previous couple of albums, with both of its feet planted firmly in rock and roll territory - nay stepping outside those confines - which is by no means a bad thing. It may be a far cry from earlier efforts but it’s still unmistakably Shihad.

From the album opener You Think You’re So Free, Jon Toogood and co grab you by the lapels and never let you go. With brilliant production from Coleman, and a much more considered approach than ever before, this is one Shihad album worth buying.

Written by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing), this gripping study into the social media behemoth, Facebook, is a must-watch.

In 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication.

Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man (Robert Redford) wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But, with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwin-dling, the ever-resourceful and tenacious sailor soon finds himself staring his own mortality in the face.

Riveting.

The Diceman cometh

When it comes to contro-versial American comedians, aside from the late, great Lenny Bruce, there are few

who can hold a candle to Andrew Dice Clay. Since he first stepped onstage at a Brooklyn comedy club in the late 1970s, he has courted controversy pretty much everywhere - most notably being banned for life on MTV after a ribald appearance at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that The Diceman is a heavyweight of comedy - holding the honour of selling out two nights at Madison Square Garden which places him in the company of such greats as George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Dane Cook, Chris Rock and Kevin Hart.

Now, Clay will be heading our way for the first time ever to give Australian audi-ences a taste of his explicit, boundary pushing humour.

“I’m over here in Vegas right now - I’m performing at the Hard Rock and I just can’t wait to get down to Australia - it’s going to be un-f***in-believable.”

“I play in Vegas a lot and I’ve had a lot of you Aussies come up to me and tell me that I should get my ass down there, so I figured it was about time.

“And, you know what? I’m gonna give you guys exactly what you want. I’m a big believer in giving the people what they’re paying for so I’ll just say that these shows are going to be as hardcore as I’ve ever been.”

Arguably the world’s first rock and roll comedian, Andrew Dice Clay’s star rose at a meteoric pace in the 1980s.

After gaining name for himself at various comedy clubs in New York and LA, and focusing on creating the “Dice” character (that first appeared in the 1984 flick Making the Grade), his big break came in 1988 when he did a seven-minute set at Rodney Dangerfield’s comedy club.

From there, he snagged his own special on HBO, the starring role in one of the most underrated comedies of all time - The Adventures of Ford Fairlane - and such massive gigs as Madison Square Garden and performing in front of the largest audience ever for a comedian, alongside Guns and Roses at the 1992 Rose Bowl.

Clay said that while he always knew he would “make it” in comedy he was never really interested or influenced by any of his predecessors - preferring instead to look at larger-than-life characters for his inspiration.

“I always knew what I was going to do and it wasn’t really a shock to me when it all started taking off. I wanted to be the Elvis Presley of comedy - a true rock star comic - and that had never really been done before.

“I wasn’t really influenced by any comics because I initially saw comedy as a way to get into acting so I was looking at people like Presley, Muhammed Ali, Sylvester Stallone, rock stars and just bigger-than-life guys for my inspiration.”

While comedy has always been his main

STEPHEN BISSET

COMEDY

creative outlet, Clay has courted both the silver and small screen since he first stepped on stage.

With small roles in such TV shows as Diff’rent Strokes and MASH, and films such as Making the Grade and Pretty In Pink, Clay’s big acting break came in the form of the starring role in The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.

Starring alongside Lauren Holly, Ed O’Neill, Priscilla Presley and Wayne Newton, Clay played the slightly misogy-nistic and wise-cracking Ford Fairlane - a detective who solved rock and roll related cases.

After Ford Fairlane, Clay experienced a bit of a career slump, with such projects as a US remake of the 70s British sitcom Bless This House not living up to the original hype. While Clay continued to perform and release comedy albums during this period, his star had fallen quite a bit from the Madison Square Garden days.

However, in what could be one of the greatest comebacks since Lazarus, after a bravura turn on the final season of the HBO comedy-drama Entourage, his phone started ringing again. A lot.

One of those people calling was none other than iconic director Woody Allen

who cast Clay in his latest film Blue Jasmine with Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin. He didn’t disappoint, either, with a performance that critics said was Oscar-worthy.

“It was such an honour working with such a great cast - and Woody, my God,” he said.

“I mean, people like Cate and Alec are Hollywood f**king royalty so I really wanted to bring my A-game to the role.

“I really wanted to be great for them so they could give their best performances - which is very different to stand-up because that’s all about being great for me.

Cate, though, she was just so freaking nice - she’s such a star and she also does the best Dice impression you’ve ever seen.”

With the comeback well and truly on track, after the Aussie tour, Clay will be releasing his autobiography, The Filthy Truth before starting work on another film project with a director by the name of Martin Scorsese.

“What can I say? The comeback contin-ues. Un-f***ing-believable.”

Catch Andrew Dice Clay at the Civic Theatre on Monday October 27. Tickets are available now via ticketek.com.au.

I’m gonna give you guys exactly what you want. These shows are going to be as hardcore as I’ve ever been.

STEVE EDMONDS BAND GUNYAH HOTEL SUNDAY, AUGUST 31

Australian blues legend and guitarist to the stars Steve Edmonds returns to the Hunter this weekend with a double treat for fans.

The Steve Edmonds Band create a great party vibe incorporating some damn fine playing and a hit list of classic ‘70s blues-drenched guitar anthems, putting the great Austral-ian pub rock tradition back at the top of its game with an “all killer, no filler” attitude.

Looking at his list of touring and recording credits, that includes the likes of Richard Clapton, Shannon Noll, Delta Goodrem, Renee Geyer, Phil Emmanuel, Chain, Matt Finish and Jimmy Barnes, it’s pretty obvi-ous that in the world of Aussie rock and roll, this guy certainly isn’t a slouch.

Being no stranger to Newcastle, the Steve Edmonds Band promises to deliver another incredible night of classic blues, boogie and rock and roll so be sure to catch the band in full flight.

Catch the Steve Edmonds Band at the Gunyah Hotel on Sunday, August 31.

BEN TRAVIS GEORGE TAVERN THURSDAY, AUGUST 28

At the age of 12, when a guitar was placed in his hands, it wasn’t hard to tell that Ben Travis was destined to be a performer.

After years of playing in bands, duos and trios fine tuning his perfor-mance skills it was time to take the leap and play the way he has always loved. Stripped back and acoustic. “I live for the moments my guitar is in my hand, for the moments that I am singing into a microphone. I forget all my troubles, all my problems and everything, for at least those few minutes, feels perfect,” he said.

By the age of 20 Ben had performed with The Screaming Jets, Anastasia, Chris Isaak, James Reyne and Grinspoon, performed at venues such as The Newcastle and Sydney Entertainment Centres, recorded an EP and toured Malaysia.

The ability to play just about any request you can shout out in a fun style will leave you wanting more. He is also known for his quirky abili-ties in between songs, “seal like” balancing tricks and card tricks. Catch Ben Travis at the George Tavern on Thursday, August 28.

A career inoverdrive

After 38 years in the business you’d think that James Reyne would be taking it easy. However, 2014 is prov-ing to be a busy year for the

iconic songwriter - he is just about to wrap up a run of his James Reyne Plays Aussie Crawl show before starting his Anthology run in celebration of the release of his two-disc “best of” solo album , before jumping back on the Aussie Crawl run.

“Yeah, it’s definitely a good problem to have,” Reyne told TE. “We’re just about to jump on this acoustic Anthology tour and then we’re lucky enough be playing a few extra Aussie Crawl theatre shows in regional areas. So, it’s all happening.”

While Reyne will be forever remem-bered as this frontman for surf-rockers Australian Crawl, his solo output, total-ling thirteen albums, has eclipsed that of Aussie Crawl and with hits such as Hammerhead, Fall of Rome, Heaven on a Stick, and Motor’s Too Fast under his belt, he has proved that he is one of this country’s most incisive songwriters. With

STEPHEN BISSET

MUSIC

multi-platinum sales and three top-ten ARIA albums, there’s no denying that his Anthology collection is way overdue. “I have to admit, I can’t take credit for that because it was Universal’s idea and they put the songs together but I have to take my hat off to them in that they gave me a lot of choice, particularly on the second disc, in terms of the newer stuff that I wanted on there.”

Reyne stepped out from behind the safety net of Australian Crawl in 1987 and hit the ground running with his self-titled debut - an album that spawned six hit singles. He said going solo was like having a weight lifted off his back. “It was abso-lutely liberating,” he said. “I had wanted to do it for a while before the band split up and I guess we’d reached a point where we’d grown out of the band so, for me, going solo was the next logical step.”

Given the success Reyne has seen, you’d think he might have an insight into what makes a song a hit. Well you’d be wrong. “There’s a saying, that has been around since Aussie Crawl that if James thinks a song is going to be a hit, it will definitely tank. You just never know,” he said. Catch James Reyne at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, September 6.

SANDI THOMDEPOT ON BEAUMONT WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24

Sandi is a punk

Perhaps best known in this country for her sweetly meandering folk-pop hit I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair), Scottish chanteuse and

multi-instrumentalist Sandi Thom will be making her way to Newcastle next month. Thom got her big break by being pretty much the first artist to ‘go viral’ on the internet by staging a live-streamed tour from her London flat in 2006. She’s since had multi-platinum sales with a major label and topped the singles charts both here and in the UK with Punk Rocker. Now a defiantly independent artist, Thom has established world-wide distribution for her own label and released three albums, including 2012’s Flesh and Blood, produced by Black Crowes co-founder Rich Robinson. Since she last visited in 2013, Thom has toured the US, UK and Scandinavia and filmed a DVD live from a hometown show in Scotland. Catch Sandi Thom at the Depot on Beaumont on Wednesday, September 24.

are packing up the chuckle wagon and heading our way, with some of the best from the fest, for a night of unabashed hilarity.

Highlights from the showcase include International headliner Al Del Bene (USA), Australia’s funniest twins The Stevenson Experience, the hilariously understated John Cruckshank, Luke Heggie’s dry, deadpan wit, the rocket-fuelled energy ball Nikki Britton, and one of comedy’s bright young sparks Marty Bright.

Guiding you through this killer line-up will be host Daniel Townes (pictured), a hilarious comic who is guaranteed to keep the jokes firing throughout the night.

Al Del Bene started doing comedy in Boston at the age of 18. Upon moving to NYC, he quickly became a staple of the under-ground comedy scene there.

After bleeding New York dry of every last joke about how miserable living there made him, Al moved to sunny L.A., where he was a regular at The

World Famous Laugh Factory on Sunset. His TV appearances include Comics Unleashed, Tour-gasm, NESN Comedy All Stars and Jon Lovitz Presents.

Al has travelled to Kuwait and Iraq, with the United Service Organization to perform for the troops, and has also performed comedy and music for more than one hundred sold-out stadiums and arenas as a featured act on Dane Cook’s Isolated Incident Tour. Al was recently named

Comedian of the Year by the L.A. Comedy Awards.

The Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase will be on at the Civic Theatre on Friday, September 5.

TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to the show. To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected] with “Sydney Comedy” in the subject line by no later than 5pm on Tuesday, September 2. Winners will be notified by phone.
