Since bursting on to the hip-hop scene in the early nineties, thanks to appearances on albums by fellow rappers De La Soul and Talib Kewli, Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def, has become one of the most potent and intriguing forces in American hip-hop.

Forming his group Black Star on Rawkus Records in 1998 and releasing the successful Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star, the album went on to produce the hits Respiration and Definition which went on to become VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip-Hop.

Launching his stellar solo career with his album Black on Both Sides in 1999 secured Mos Def major respect for his socially and political aware lyrics and poetic style of storytelling, which garnered him a mass of mainstream hip-hop fans in the process.

As a respected rapper and actor, Mos Def has balanced the fine art of his craft and parlayed them into successful performance’s on Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, plus acting roles in Brown Sugar, Talladega Nights, Be Kind, Rewind and Cadillac Records to name a few, and has gone on to appear in the critically acclaimed HBO film Something the Lord Made for which he received an Emmy award and Golden Globe nomination.

Unlike her bands’ howling swagger, Karen O has gone the opposite direc-tion with fifteen intimate, charming and sometimes emotionally raw songs stripped back to their bare essentials - a scratchy acoustic guitar and O’s signature wail.

If lush, big budget production is your thing, go pick up the latest Taylor Swift record -if you’re looking for something a little more grounded, then this could be just the ticket.

While the premise of this film may seem flimsy, it is guaranteed to have you riveted from start to finish.

James Franco stars as a mountain climber who becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneer-ing alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive. Franco, who normally pops up in comedies brings a great deal of dramatic gravitas to the role and if you can stomach one gut wrenching scene, you will be glued to the screen.

Trying to outline why this whimsical film from the king of whimsy Wes Anderson (Royal Tennen-baums, The Life Aquatic) is so good would never really do it justice. Suffice to say that it’s an absolute gem.

The film recounts the adventures of Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes) a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enor-mous family fortune - all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramati-cally changing continent.

Brilliantly engaging.

Standing on the outside

When it comes to great Austral-ian songwriters, there are few, with the possible exception of

Paul Kelly and Slim Dusty, that can hold a candle to Don Walker.

As principal songwriter for Cold Chisel as well as Tex Don and Charlie, Catfish and a sporadic but no less brilliant solo output, Walker has created a kind of journeyman beat-poet vision of Australian-ness with-out ever veering into mawkish or overly sentimental territory.

Now, Walker will be heading to Newcas-tle for two intimate shows - the first at Mayfield’s Sunset Studios with long-time collaborator Roy Payne and the second at Lizotte’s with his backing band The Suave F**ks.

“The first show will be just me and Roy onstage together playing a set of half his songs and half mine - it’s a really small venue and it gives me the chance to get into a bit of a different situation and explore what both Roy and I do a little bit deeper,” Walker explained. “The second show, in late October will be a full band show but it will just be the solo stuff, maybe a couple of Tex Don and Charlie songs but I won’t be doing any Cold Chisel

because it doesn’t really suit the sensibil-ity of what we do.”

Walker is hitting the road in support of his latest album Hully Gully and while it may be only his third solo album in 19 years, listening to this collection you get the sense that this is due more to a keen sense of quality control than anything else.

“There are some songs on the album that pre-date [previous release] Cutting Back,” he said. “The whole thing was recoded in about four days over a couple of sessions once we got the songs to the point of being ready without being over-baked and then we got [US songwriter and Grammy award-winning producer] Joe Henry to mix it and he really put a high end Ameri-can sheen on everything.”

Walker, who will be kicking off 2015 with a flurry of Cold Chisel activity, said his passion for writing, recording and touring hasn’t waned one iota since hitting the road all those years ago.

“It’s interesting because after doing it for ten or so years, much to my astonishment I found that I was able to make a living out of this and now, to my further astonish-ment, it has managed to continue.”

In the last couple of years Karen has also had some success on the country scene playing in Tamworth during the festival and, in the 12 years she has been singing profes-sionally O’Shea has supported numerous artists including Randy Crawford, Wilson Pickett, James Morrison, Christine Anu, Jimmy Barnes, CBD and some of Australia’s rising country stars.

She was also awarded the coveted Frank Ifield International Spur Award for best new female per-former 2001.

With three brilliantly genre-bend-ing albums - Problems, Head of the Hawk and Company - not

to mention countless ks clocked up on Aussie roads, Australia’s foremost purvey-ors of hyperactive pop-rock are calling it a day, but not before one last lap of honour around the country for good measure.

The last hurrah comes off the back of the band’s swansong -the infectious earworm I’ll Go Crazy, lifted from their upcoming compilation album Retrospectable.

“Yeah, it’s definitely going to be bitter-sweet, but it’s also going to be a hell of a lot of fun” frontman Stav Yiannoukas told TE.

“We’ll be looking to throw some differ-ent stuff in there - I mean, it’s going to be the full tour compliment, there’ll be a pretty crazy light show, we’ll be bringing as many players as we can afford and it will be as raucous as ever, but we might throw in a few more intimate moments in there amoung the balls-to-the-wall-stuff, I think the occasion calls for it.

was for everyone to “a peek at what exists on the other side of the velvet curtain, to work on new things, and to hopefully wear their sequined leotards less often”, added that he felt fortunate that the band was able to bow out on its own terms.

It is this commitment to performance and a kind of proletarian approach , according to Yiannoukas that was the secret to the band’s success.

“In terms of live performance, I’d say we were in the top ten best live bands in the country,” he said.

“When we started, even though the songs might not have been there yet, we were all about making sure that every show was better than the last one, and I really think that commitment is what` started winning us fans. Also, it was the chemistry that existed with all of us - something that is critical to the success of any band.”

All over it like a greenmohair suit

They may’ve been primar-ily a side project for the last seven years, but you

wouldn’t know it this year with Sydney-based “garage grass” outfit, the Green Mohair Suits releasing their EP Aubergine earlier this year and backing it up with their third long player Wooden Duck.

Featuring the talents of Brian Campeau and Ritchie Cuthbert from Cuthebert and the Night-walkers, the Green Mohair Suits started life as a Gram Parsons tribute act and, after seven years together, Wooden Duck repre-sents a new collaborative phase in the band all four members have shared the songwtiting stuties, penning tracks for the album both together and separately.

Alternatively described by members of the band as “songs about love, loss of love, and f*cked up experiences - for fans of the Carter Family and Ryan Adams,” a document of their “mutual respect for each other” and a true representation of their onstage “live essence”, Wooden Duck layers the finest moments of Americana, bluegrass and

country music, embeds jewels of innumerable influences [gypsy-jazz, blues, folk, rock et al] throughout four men’s songs, and ties them all together with flawless four-part harmonies.

The stories that make up Wooden Duck come from unex-pected, far flung places and times - from a holiday fling with a Colorado girl in a purple van, to smoking endless cigarettes while propping up a Berlin bar.

Inspired by Beck, Fleet Foxes, Hank Williams, Tom Waits, Portishead and of course, Gram

Parsons and turning out their own “garage-grass” sound, it’s likely that the raucous delivery Green Mohair Suits charge their sets with was honed to a messy art onstage at Mullumbimby Festival, Peats Ridge Festival and naturally, Tamworth Country Music Festi-val, not to mention the innumer-able venues they’ve drunk-played in all over the country.

Catch the Green Mohair Suits at the Lass O’Gowrie on Friday, September 26 and the Grand Junction Hotel on Saturday, September 27.

A VERY FISHY TALE HITS MAITLAND

Rebbeca Stranger is the first to admit that despite being the lead, her character isn’t very likable.

Ms Stranger plays the title character in Maitland Reper-tory Theatre’s latest production, Miranda, a fantasy comedy which will see a mermaid, Ms Stranger’s role, grace the stage.

Brought to the English home of a doctor after his fishing holiday, Miranda is assumed to be a patient who is unable to walk, but there is something fishy about her, and she quickly turns the heads of all the male members of the household.

“It’s a very exciting production,” Ms Stranger said.“There was a while there where I didn’t really like the

character because she pushes her way around, but when I discovered that she wasn’t supposed to be liked I enjoyed playing her a little more.

“She’s actually quite fun and flirty.”Miranda opens tonight (Wednesday) and runs on Friday
