It is time to celebrate summer in the city! Have you noticed? Everything looks different lately, as the city and surrounding c o m m u n i t i e s radiate with life and vitality. People are out and about, festivals are happening and time outside is less about getting from here to there and more about savoring ordinary moments. Something happens when windows are opened and temperatures rise. People take time to talk with one another, and community takes on a whole different feel.

Think about the difference between a blustery day in January and the last few weeks. The dormancy of nature has burst forth with new life and invitations to take it all in. At this time of year, there is a tendency to stretch ourselves into new ways of being,

The Recipe of LifeBy Kadeem CalhounPhotos courtesy of Trinity Work Kennard Johnston

Summer has just begun, and living has been exhilarating! So far, lost in Baltimore turned into being chosen as an extra in a movie. Volunteering at the Dauphin County Music Festival created access to New Orleans’ own Big Sam & The Funky Nation. The door of opportunity opened, and there I was on stage playing with Big Sam. The lesson was to be prepared.

What are you doing with your summer? I’ve heard the recipe for life can be as simple as four essential ingredients:

1. Do the things you love. Fall in love with life.2. Give the best that is within you. Give your all and never give

up. Fear is to life like clouds are to flowers – in the moment, it may seem gloomy, but beyond the clouds, the sun shines bright. So stay motivated and keep pushing forward. Like the flower, you will flourish.

3. Seize every opportunity, and live in the moment.4. Be the change you want to see. The recipe is quite simple.Life has so much to offer, so be willing to live in those moments.

Have an adventure, and remember that you don’t have to be a great cook to know how to follow a recipe. UC

connecting with friends and family while cultivating healthful habits and lifestyles. There are opportunities all around us to enjoy the arts, recreation, exercise and the simplicity of eating a meal outside while breathing in fresh air. How wonderful it would be if we could remember these moments and live them throughout the entire year. Maybe we can because we reap what we sow.

In each moment, we are given a choice how we will respond to all that life offers. It may not always seem apparent, but regardless of what is happening around us, there is space for us to pause, refresh and reconnect to a place within ourselves that always delivers a deeper experience. Think about breathing in a summer day – fresh flowers, the scent of pines or soil in a garden. Remember the sounds of music playing at an outdoor concert, children splashing in water or fans cheering at a baseball game. Recall a moment of connection while sharing a meal, glass of ice tea or chilled lemonade with a colleague. Notice how a simple thought can take us into memory and sensation. Our experience is enhanced with each new experience we allow in our lives.

This summer, take time to slow down and breathe in the space between the words – the space between breaths. Step out of ordinary routines, and allow the present to be extraordinary. Take in the sights, sounds, tastes, smells and energy of new experiences and people, savoring the gifts of the city. Know that you are investing in yourself and will receive the fruits of your labor throughout the year.

Fashion SpotBy Adrian Stephens

Summertime is officially here – backyard barbecues, weddings and vacations. If you’re wondering what you’ll wear to the next date on your calendar, follow these tips for looking good and feeling great.

ColorOver the last few summers, neon

colors have been demanding all the attention. This summer, command the spotlight with a whisper in pastels.

Wide-Leg PantsOn a mild summer day, try wide-leg pants. If you pair these flared

bottoms with a crop top, you’re sure to be current with the trends. Not comfortable bearing your midriff? Wear a shirt that’s short in length and is light in fabric to match the relaxing style of the pants.

HatsSummer can get pretty hot, and you will want to stay cool.

Accessories can provide the perfect alternative to jazzing up your outfit and fighting the heat. Protect your hair against frizz and humidity by shading your face with a hat. Caps are in full effect with an array of designs. If you want a more sophisticated look, top your ensemble off with a fedora.
