DJ, producer, cartoonist and occasional tea drinker, Andy Carthy aka Mr Scruff will be winging his way to Sydney next month.

His recorded work for legendary UK record label Ninja Tune has made him one of the longest-signed artists and a firm favourite with fans of soul and electron-ica. From his breakthrough 1999 debut LP Keep It Unreal to his latest Friendly Bacteria, Mr Scruff has been able to straddle hip hop beats, swing house, cheeky sub wobblers and mid tempo nodders like no other. Priding himself on playing marathon sets that delve deep into his musical cauldron - flitting between soul, funk, hip-hop, jazz, reggae, latin, ska, disco, house, funk, breaks, soundtracks and more, it’s key to note that Carthy knows music, having a desire to play exactly what he wants. Accompanied by his brilliantly cute animations on the big screen, Mr. Scruff is sure to deliver a playful audio and visual spectacle.

With the exception of the usual suspects - The Harder They Come, The Wall, Satur-day Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Empire Records et al, this reviewer rarely sees the point in movie soundtracks. Could you not just play the film and not watch it?

It was this question that kept returning to my mind while listening to this over-blown, boisterous and, at times, preten-tious score from the equally overblown, boisterous and pretentious Peter Jackson film. Composed by the Academy Award winning Howard Shore, you could almost imagine listening to this while taking a stroll around Middle Earth but while putting a load of washing on? Somehow it just doesn’t fit.

I suppose it would be perfect, though, if you and a group of friends wanted to go on a really, really, really long walk.

Many have tried, and failed, to produce a funny flick about zombies, but Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright hit the nail on the head with this one. Shaun (Pegg) decides to turn his life around by getting his ex to take him back, but times it for the middle of what may be a zombie apocalypse. It’s an opportunity to show everyone how useful he is by saving them.

The first instalment of this adaptation of Frank Miller’s pulp noir classic dropped many jaws for its use of visceral violence and unique cinematography and it’s more of the same here. Weaving together two stories from Miller’s graphic novel series, A Dame to Kill For revisits many of the denizens of Sin City including Mickey Rourke’s man mountain Marv, and Bruce Willis’ hard-bitten cop Hartigan.

If you are a regular reader of these pages, you would be well aware of the meteoric rise of Newcastle country sensation Morgan Evans.

While his musical chops have been piquing the interest of country tastemakers both here and abroad, and with more plaudits that he can poke a stick at, Evans looks to be making quite a splash in the medium of television.

Evans, who recently picked up a

presenting gig at the Country Music Channel (CMC) has been nominated for a best new talent gong at this year’s TV Week Logies.

With more and more forces vying for Evans’ time, one only hopes he has the time to continue producing such great music.

Head over to tvweeklogieawards.com.au/vote to give Evans the thumbs up.

Good luck, Morgan.

Alternative Sydney rockers, With Confidence, are hitting the road next month in support of their recently released EP ‘Distance’.

With the EP only dropping a couple of weeks ago, the response by the fans has been overwhelming with the EP rocketing to number two on the iTunes alternative charts and number 10 on the overall iTunes albums chart.

“Honestly, fans always surprise us with their support and we didn’t expect to push that high in the charts,” lead vocalist and bassist Jayden Seeley said.

“We’re forever grateful for everyone that lends us their ears and supports our music”.

The four-piece’s popularity is a prod-uct of solid touring and hard work over the past twelve months supporting the likes of You Me At Six, Tonight Alive, Kids In Glass Houses, Neck Deep and more recently, Marianas Trench. The constant touring has also heavily influ-enced the band’s maturity in their song writing which is evident on Distance.

Catch With Confidence at Hombre Records on Sunday, February 8. (All Ages)

added that he was adamant that she find her own voice.

“I remember asking him if I could take singing lessons and he asked “why?” and I said “because I like singing” and he said ‘no, because I don’t want you to sound like everyone else in the choir.”

However, when you can call on the likes of Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr and Frank Sinatra for advice, you’re on a pretty good track.

“I learned so much from those guys,” she said.

“I learned my phrasing from Uncle Frank, everything I know about tone from Peggy Lee and just coming home from school and seeing people like Bobby Darin or Ella Fitzgerald in your living room or the great Sammy Cahn playing the piano - you can’t help but pick up a few things.

While tales of the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop) and their hedonistic partying are ubiquitous in the fabric of popular music mythology, Martin said that her home life painted a different picture.

“Sure, there were ups and downs, but I can honestly say that Dean Martin really was the coolest dad ever,” she said.

“He was very down to earth and except for when he was playing Vegas, he was home every night for dinner.

“It really was a wonderful life, growing up. I remember, when I was four years old , I put on a play for Judy Garland at her house and after the performance she came up to me and said ‘Deana, you were the best tree I have ever seen’. My first critic was Judy Garland.”

Martin has, for years, worked to ensure the longevity of her father’s legacy and in 2001 was successful in lobbying the Ohio governor (Dean’s hometown was Steubenville, Ohio) to make June 7 Dean Martin Day.

Aside from the upcoming show, her latest project is a film adaptation of her bestselling memoir Memories Are Made of This: Dean Martin Through His Daughter’s Eyes.

“It’s just so exciting,” Martin said.“I was just talking to the executive

producer last week and it’s all systems go - Jennifer Love Hewitt has signed on to play me and we’re talking to Joe Mantegna [who played Martin in the 1998 film The Rat Pack] about directing. The trick, at this stage is finding the right person to play Dean - we have to be very careful about that.”

“Seeingpeople like Bobby Darin or Ella Fitzgerald in your living room or the great Sammy Cahn playing the piano - you can’t help but pick up a few things”

Daughter of the legendary crooner and Rat Packer Dean Martin, Deana, is certainly no stranger to the spotlight. An accomplished

singer and actor in her own right, Deana has also dedicated her life to keeping her father’s legacy alive - as Novocastrians are sure to find out when she hits town next month.

“You know, the more I get the chance to talk about him the longer the flag keeps flying so, I never tire of talking about Dean Martin,” she told TE.

While there will be a fair slab of Dean’s formidable catalogue included in the show - think the likes of Mambo Italiano, Volare and Ain’t That a Kick in the Head - Martin said the show was also a celebration of the Great American Songbook.

“People can expect beautiful tight gowns and lots of glamour,” she laughed.

“Aside from that, they will also hear a lot of Dean’s favourite tunes as well as some

of the greatest songs ever recorded from the Great American Songbook.”

One of the highlights, and surely one of the most poignant segments of the show will be when Deana sings a duet with her father on the song True Love, that she recorded for her latest album Destination Moon.

“It’s a wonderful song that was written by Cole Porter and we had the original Nelson Riddle arrangement that Dean used so hopefully I won’t be breaking down when it comes time to sing that one,” she said.

Martin added that the recording the song was also an experience that she won’t soon forget.

“It was an unbelievable experience but I almost couldn’t get through it,” she said.

“I was using the same mic that Dean used, the same charts and I was in the same vocal booth. Just hearing our voices together was phenomenal.”

Martin said that when she first told her father about her dreams to become a singer, he was instantly supportive but she

A fter the Hoodoo Gurus bravura turn at last year’s Gumball Festi-val - a set that proved, beyond a

shadow of a doubt, what a potent musical force the Gurus still are - frontman Dave Faulkner and guitarist Brad Shepherd are heading back our way for a bit of a duo show at Lizotte’s next month.

“Yeah the Gumball show was one a little out of the box,” Faulkner told TE.

“We didn’t really know what to expect because I’d never heard of it before, but we had an absolute blast and we basically took a year off after that show so it’s good to be getting going again.”

The upcoming show will see Faulkner and Shepherd in duo mode and while he said there are some basic set-list ideas sketched out before each show, those best laid plans often deviate into a swarm of audience requests.

“There is kind of a set-list but often things will pop into my head on the spot or the crowd will call out a few curve balls - I guess there shouldn’t be any expecta-tions - anything can happen.

“The main thing for Brad and I is figur-ing out which songs to play acoustic and which songs to play electric, but, playing the songs in this way definitely opens them up to new interpretations. You really can go down that whole set-list rabbit hole, but I’m normally pretty good at remembering my lyrics - I’m terrible at other people’s songs but I usually do okay with mine.”

Faulkner said that 2015 was shaping up to be the year of new beginnings for the Hoodoo Gurus with the announcement, last week, that drummer Mark Kingsmill will be hanging up the sticks. Don’t go thinking that the Gurus are calling it a day however.

“Yeah, Mark is calling it a day and if there is anyone who deserves to put his feet up, its Mark Kingsmill - he’s such a physical drummer and while he can still match that physicality, the recovery periods are just getting longer. We did think about breaking up, but there are definitely things that I still want to do with the Gurus, so watch this space.”

The last time Jon Stevens took the stage at the Depot on Beaumont, he certainly must’ve made an impression, because he’s coming back to do it all again.

“It’s just a great gig to play - last time I was there things got pretty wild, but that’s Newcastle for you, it’s a wild rock and roll town.

“But those that caught the show last time would know that it’s a three piece acoustic show which is really off the cuff - we don’t really know what’s going to happen and that’s just how we like it. It’s more about the audience and the room, and it’s certainly a great room,” he said.

While his latest outfit, The Dead Daisies having a massive 2014 with a string of mammoth tours in the US with the likes of Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kiss and Def Leppard, it’s refreshing to see that Jon Stevens still has his feet firmly planted on the ground.

“Those big shows are great, but the size of the show is irrelevant to me - I get just as much enjoyment playing an acoustic guitar to a small audience as I do with the big rock and roll show,” Stevens told TE.

“I just love playing anyway - it doesn’t matter if it’s to two people or 20,000.”

While Stevens said the Daisies were taking a bit of a well earned break, he wasn’t about to start sitting around on his laurels.

“It’s good to take some time off but you can’t just sit around for months on end, otherwise you’d atrophy,” he said.

“I’m always writing, be it for solo stuff, the Daisies or Noiseworks - it’s really important to keep your hand in, y’know?

“Actually, we’d been working on a new Noiseworks album for a couple of years now but we’re really going to finish it this year - there’s some really great songs going on in there and there still seems to be a hell of a lot of love out there for the band, so it should be pretty exciting.”

A fter making quite a name for himself on the Newcastle covers scene with his in-demand outfit

Tres Hombres, guitarist Jesse Fildes is dipping his toe into the previously unchartered original music waters with an EP, due out in late February. Having played in all manner of covers bands, duos and trios both here and on the Central Coast, Fildes told TE that while the prospect was a daunting one, he said it was one challenge he felt he was up for. “I guess it is a little bit daunting because I don’t really know how it’s all going to pan out - also, showing people a side of myself that I’ve never shown before is a little bit nerve wracking but I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds - it’s really exciting.”

Titled From the Top, the five track-EP is a welcome harkening back to soaring 80s-esque licks, and funky-as-hell riffs.

“I really wanted to pay homage to the musicians who have influenced me so, when I started playing, I was listening to a lot of blues guys, then stuff like Hendrix and Clapton, then the rockier world of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple and 80s metal like Poison and Dokken so I wanted the EP to be reflective of that.” Fildes said the tracks were writ-ten over a period of five months and recorded at home with Fildes playing all instruments except the drums.

“It was kind of slow going, writing the songs, especially the first couple as I’d never really done it before,” he said.

“But I think, playing in a covers band, you get a pretty good sense of what makes a good song and what people want to hear.”

W hile he is perhaps best known as the “fully sick” Habib from the Paul Fenech universe - Fat

Pizza, Swift and Shift Couriers and Housos - Tahir Bilgic is also quite a dab hand at stand-up.

“People don’t realise that I’m a stand-up comedian,” the funnyman told TE.

“Because most people know me as Habib, they come and see me do stand-up and are surprised, but I was doing stand-up for years before Fat Pizza.”

Tahir will be making his way to Newcas-tle next month for a night of lols at the Squire’s Maiden with fellow funnymen Joel Ozborn and Steve Phillip.

“This show is going to be great - I just love working with my friends and these guys are great blokes,” he said.

‘We’ve done plenty of shows together and we’re really looking forward to this one.

“It’s kind of like a road trip for us.“My show will be very interactive - I

don’t pick on anyone but I’ll let people throw topics at me so there’s a fair bit of freestyling going on.

“Anyone that’s seen me before will know that I talk about racism a fair bit in my show, but every race definitely cops it - no one is safe.

“Not in a nasty way or anything - it’s more about breaking down cultural stereotypes in a side-splittingly funny way.”

Tahir - whose gift of the gab has seen him perform right around the globe - said that he had no idea that Habib and his neverending quest to find good looking chicks would become a part of the Austral-ian cultural zeitgeist.

“For sure I had no idea,” he said. When you think about it he’s been on TV,

in one form or another - from Fat Pizza, Swift and Shift Couriers and Housos for the past 15 years and, in terms of Australian television, that’s a pretty big accomplish-ment.

“I think the secret is that over that period, we’ve all become great friends.

It’s funny because people often ask if we all grew up together - as if Housos is a documentary or a reality TV show,” he laughed.

“But I guess that’s a really great compli-ment.”

Catch Tahir at The Squire’s Maiden, alongside Joel Ozborn and Steve Phillip on Friday, February 5 from 7pm.

Mike Oldfield’s classic prog rock masterpiece, Tubular Bells - argu-ably the greatest instrumental work ever produced, and the album that launched Richard Branson’s Virgin empire, will be the subject of a one-off show at Fort Scratchley this weekend.

A sell-out hit at several international festivals, including the 2012 and 2013 Edinburgh Fringe, Tubular Bells For Two is a truly unique experience.

When two childhood friends from the Blue Mountains got together to try and recreate the classic Celtic-folk-rock opus by ear for acoustic guitars, they had no idea where it would lead them. In an impassioned quest, they started adding more and more layers, eventually fashioning their first set of tubular bells from old fenceposts.

The original album required no less than 30 musicians but Daniel Hold-

sworth and Aidan Roberts manage, somehow to recreate it in real time with four feet and four hands. These prodigiously talented musos leap between instruments strewn across the stage in a musical tour-de-force interpretation. The stage is packed with more than twenty instruments including organs, pianos, guitars, mandolins, tuned percussion, glock-enspiel, loop pedals and, of course, those tubular bells.

Tubular Bells for Two will be on at the Fort Scratchley Parade Ground from 8pm on Saturday, January 31. Visit civictheatrenewcastle for more information and tickets.

TE is giving you a chance to win a double pass to the show. To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected] with “Bells” in the subject line, by no later than 5pm on Thursday, January 29.

The bells, the bells

Hot on the heels of their blistering new EP, Stepping Stones, Northern Rivers roots-rockers The Swamp Stompers are heading down our way for what promises to be a tubthumping good time.

Frontman and guitar slinger extraordi-naire Corey Legge told TE that the tour was the culmination of quite a bit of hard work.

“Yeah it’s been a little while in the making - pretty much all of the songs were written over the space of around two years which included writing and performing to get them up to scratch,” he said.

“Then we basically took a break for two weeks and headed into the studio to get it all down as live as possible.”

Given that these guys are fast becoming known for bringing the goods and then some in the live arena, Legge said that it

was always the intention to try and reflect that live energy in the studio. Further, when you’ve got multi-award winning bluesman Lloyd Spiegel saying “this band has the right mix of potions to take Australian blues and roots to the next level”, it’s a pretty tacit acknowledgement that you’re on the right track.

First coming together in 2012 at Southern Cross Uni, where the trio are all study-ing music, the Swamp Stompers have managed to pack a fair bit in to a relatively short career, with plum slots on the busk-ing stage at Bluesfest and the Sydney Blues and Roots Festival under their belts. For now, though, Legge said it will be a case of plugging away and preaching the Swamp Stompers gospel far and wide.

“We’d love to do an album, but for now we’re just focussing on promoting this new EP.”

Catch the Swamp Stompers at the Stag and Hunter on Saturday, February 7.

This reviewer has never been a fan of the work of Reese Witherspoon (save for her brilliant turn in the 90s indie comedy SFW), so I approached her latest effort with a sense of trepidation.

However, my concerns were allayed about five minutes as Witherspoon gives a fantastic performance - especially considering that she has to carry the entire film. It centres around Cheryl Strayed (Witherspoon) who, after the death of her mother and the breakdown of her marriage, decides with barely any experience to hike more than 1000 miles of the Californian Pacific Crest trail.

It’s a journey of self-discovery story made more powerful by the fact that it is true (Nick Hornby’s script was based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir). Hornby’s script allows for moments of humour while Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, who plays Cheryl’s mother, thor-oughly deserve their Oscar nominations.

MOVIEREVIEWS

While Clint Eastwood has long loomed large in this reviewer’s top directors list, he may well have slipped down a couple of rungs after this ‘hoo-rah’ war bio-pic.

The film, based on the book written by Chris Kyle, the US Special Forces sniper who was credited by the Department of Defence with 160 kills over four tours of Iraq although according to Kyle, that figure was closer to 250.

He is unapologetic about his desire to protect America from the Iraqi “savages” (Kyle’s words) and while Bradley Cooper gives a stoic perfor-mance as Kyle, you have to wonder if this guy deserves to be memorialised in film.

While Eastwood certainly doesn’t drape him-self in the stars and stripes as some, like Seth Rogen have suggested, the way Kyle is portrayed as essentially an 80s action movie star did not sit well here. There are definitely anti-war senti-ments expressed in American Sniper, mostly from Kyle’s brother, they are overshadowed by a palpable sense of “America is here to save the

day.” Also, the fact that one of the main conflicts in the film comes in the form of a “competition” between Kyle and the number one Iraqi sniper -an Olympian from Syria, who, incidentally is not humanised in any way - in fact, I don’t recall him having any dialogue like the rest of the Iraqi soldiers - seemed a tad silly. While it is supposed to be a story of one man’s internal struggle with the horrors of war and the impact that has on his family, Kyle seemed so unfazed by his actions, that this seemed a little redundant.

At a structural level, there were some prob-lems, too. The first act, which skimmed too quickly over Kyle’s early life and entry into the armed forces, was rushed in favour of all of that wonderful sniping. Also, the fact that Kyle was murdered by a fellow soldier at a firing range in 2013, was glossed over to the point of being rele-gated to a couple of lines of text at the end of the film. There were things to like, though - Bradley Cooper who rarely gives a bad performance and Sienna Miller, outstanding as Kyle’s wife.

Unbroken (M) EVENT CINEMAS, GLENDALE // STEPHEN BISSET [3/5]

While Angelina Jolie has proved, on more than one occasion, that she is more than just a pretty face (Salt, Changeling, The Good Shep-herd) with this fascinating biopic, it looks as though she might be just as adept in the direc-tor’s chair.

This remarkable true story follows the life of US Olympic distance runner, Louis Zamperini.

Zamperini joined the armed forces in World War II only to be captured by the Japanese navy after his plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean.

Trapped in a Japanese POW camp, Zamperini must survive the war while being singled out by the sadistic commander Watanabe.

While there is a fair amount of narrative pre-dictability here, the source material is fascinat-ing enough on its own. In the hands of a more seasoned director, this could have been a truly great film.

As it stands, it’s a perfectly passable bio-pic that, while it misses a few emotional beats here and there, still manages to engage.
