When it comes to face-melting riffs, sheer heavy metal aggression and the ability to rock leather and studs like nobody’s business, metal gods Judas Priest pretty much take the cake.

With such barn-burners as Hellbent for Leather, Breakin’ The Law, Living After Midnight and Metal Gods under their spiky bullet belts, Rob Halford and co really know how to melt a face or two, which is exactly what will happen when they descend on the Enmore for a special Soundwave sideshow. While the term leg-ends definitely applies here, don’t go thinking Priest are resting on their laurels, with their 2014 long-player Redeemer of Souls marking a tremendous return to form. In fact, The Guardian said the album had “all the subtlety of an axe to the skull”.

If that isn’t enough, Priest will be bringing fellow British metallers and unri-valled fret-shredders Dragonforce to open proceedings. Dragonforce’s latest studio effort is Maximum Overload. Definitely one you won’t want to miss.

The performances from leads Ewan McGregor and Brendan Thwaites are powerful, the set pieces are engaging and there is enough tension to keep you interested, although constant twists and turns from act two on may leave you a little giddy.

Thwaites is JR, a newly arrived prisoner, locked up for a minor crime and in des-perate need of protection. Enter hard nut Brendan Lynch (McGregor) who offers JR his watchful eye. After he is released, JR is tasked with breaking Lynch out of prison with the view of executing a mam-moth gold heist. But things don’t really go according to plan.

Found-footage horror flicks are a dime a dozen these days, and most of them are plain terrible. This early foray into the genre, however, is worthwhile.

A bunch of New Yorkers are throwing a farewell bash for a mate when a gi-ant Godzilla-like monster decides to ruin their night by ruining their city. Told entirely from the group’s point of view through their video camera, Cloverfield offers an interesting point of view on many of the hackneyed monster flicks.

If ever there was a gig, aside from the millions of others, that you wish you attended, it would be this. Just check out the line-up - Gillian Welch, Jack White, Marcus Mumford, Conor Oberst, Elvis Costello, Punch Brothers, Joan Baez, the Milk Carton Kids and Dave Rawlings. Wow! This album documents a one-night-only concert at NYC’s town hall to celebrate the music of the Coen brothers.

Still riding high on the back of their first live album, A Little Saturday Night Music, Floyd Vincent and the Temple Dogs are coming back to Newcastle and Lake Macquarie for two shows this weekend.

The band will be hitting the Wickham Park Hotel on Saturday night before backing up with an afternoon show at the Burwood Colliery Sports Club on Sunday.

Vincent said the band was always keen to support the Newcastle live music scene, particularly the Burwood Colliery Bowling Club.

“Newcastle has always been such a strong town for live music,” he said.

“Unfortunately, though, the Burwood is going through some tough times at the moment and is calling out for help.

“They just had a big day with the Screaming Jets but they are on the ropes financially at the moment and need some more local support. It would be such a shame to see another venue which supports live music go under.”

Catch Floyd Vincent and the Temple Dogs at the Wickham Park Hotel on Saturday from 8.30pm and the Burwood on Sunday from 4pm.

With last year’s inaugural hit-out still fresh in everyone’s minds, the Hunter Region’s best “second-hand formal-themed festival”, PigSty in July will be tearing up the idyllic bushland venue of Dashville again this year.

After a sold-out show last year and with heavy-hitters such as Wolf & Cub, Steve Smyth, Mojo Juju and King of The North, punters can expect that the Gumball Festival’s little sister will be even bigger in 2015.

A one-day, over-18s event full of light-hearted luxurious indulgence, PigSty in July features some of the best local boutique beers and wines, scrumptious

food and, of course, some great tunes. While organisers are keeping quiet on the line-up, all will be revealed on March 11 but Magpie Johnson, one of the PigSty organisers, has promised a blinder.

“This year we’ll be bringing more food, more beer, more wine, more bands and more fun. Along with some fresh new site improvements, the sky is the limit for this little winter gem.”

Tickets are $48 and will go on sale to the general public today at pigstyinjuly.com.au. Combined event and return bus packages are available at rovercoaches.com.au.

Sure, it was impossible not to be influenced by him growing up. He has always believed that artistic success always comes from the sweat of the brow.

Just over three years ago, Adam Cohen - son of iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen - contemplated bowing out of the music business completely.

“I was just disil-lusioned,” Cohen told TE during a whistlestop Australian promotion tour.

“I had released two albums (1998’s Adam Cohen and 2004’s French-language record Mélancolista) and I guess I became disillusioned with the whole process. I took too many punches in the face.”

Thankfully Cohen’s self-imposed retire-ment turned out to be just a hiatus and he returned, reinvigorated and reinspired to deliver his beautiful Like A Man set in 2012 and his fifth album, Home, which is the focus of Cohen’s upcoming Australian tour - his first since 2012 - that will see him take to the Lizotte’s stage next month.

“You know what,” Cohen said.“I’m here in Australia right now and it’s

such a beautiful day and I’m more than excited to be coming back down to make some music. I feel so very privileged to be able to do that.”

After the success of Like A Man - the album went gold in his native Canada - Cohen started work on the follow-up, only to scrap the entire thing mid-stream.

“Yeah, it was coming across like a guy who was just too eager, trying to make an impression, you know? So I had to scrap it all,” he said.

“It’s funny because my father has always had a ‘publish or perish’ attitude so he thought I was quite crazy, but even that’s a little ironic because it can take him, like, 10 years to write a song.”

Starting again from scratch, with a limited budget and limited resources, Cohen retreated to two of his childhood homes - one in Montreal and one on the Greek Island of Hydra - with his three-piece band and three-piece string section to start again with Home.

The album expands on the tenderness of Like A Man, still using the delicate tones of the nylon string guitar but tempered with deeper more complex arrangements that make the most of the strings and piano, making for a diverse and rich album.

Lyrically, Cohen said the album centres on the relationship he has with his father and his seven-year-old son.

“I just wanted to make the most honest and faithful album I could.

“Making an album in the comfort of

Cohen hisown way

MUSIC

STEPHEN BISSET

home on makeshift equipment with this band of touring musicians who had become my family immediately offered a beacon of hope that no studio, or session players, or priceless gear ever could.”

Listening to Cohen’s work, his father’s influence looms large but the younger Cohen is definitely forging his own path while still being respectful of his father’s musical legacy.

“Sure, it was impossible not to be influ-enced by him growing up.

“He has always believed that artistic success always comes from the sweat off the brow.

“But there were many other musical touchstones that influenced me in one way or another - there are too many to mention - but I love artists that address the upper part of the body, the cerebral, like my dad, Bob Dylan and Randy Newman [whose influence is felt particu-larly on Home’s title track with its subtle tenderness and self-effacing humour] as well as artists who address the lower part of the body, the earthy, like James Brown and Prince.”

For now, though, the re-inspired and re-energised Cohen said the plan of attack was to just keep striking while the iron is hot.

“It’s really important for me to stay busy,” he said.

“For me, it’s all about getting out here and planting little flags in the hope that, when you return, they’re still flying.”

Catch Adam Cohen when he hits the stage at Lizotte’s Lambton on Thursday, March 19.

TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to see Adam Cohen. To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected], with “Cohen” in the subject line, by no later than 5pm on Tuesday, February 24.

MUSIC

As the frontman for ubiq-uitous 70s Aussie pop rockers Sherbet, and with a formidable solo canon that includes no-fooling Aussie

classics such as Horses, As The Days Go By and One Summer, it’s pretty self evident that Daryl Braithwaite has etched himself quite an important niche in the fabric of Australian musical culture.

However, rather than rest on the laurels of a music icon, Braithwaite is still in the business of making great music, as his latest mini-album, Forever The Tourist, demonstrates.

The album marks Braithwaite’s first foray into the studio since 2008’s the Lemon Tree, as well as rekindling his relationship with Sony Music, which was behind the release of his multi-platinum albums Edge and Rise.

“It was always envisaged as an inde-pendent release,” Braithwaite told TE.

“I ended up sending it off to Sony just to get some feedback and [Sony Australia boss] Denis [Handlin] heard it and then

got in touch telling me that Sony wanted to release it, which is just fantastic.”

The 64-year-old, who is heading back to Newcastle next month, still displays a passion for the live arena that artists years his junior could only dream about.

“I just really love the idea of playing live, and I guess that comes from being around at a time in Australia when live performance was the key,” he said.

“Also, I really love playing up there.”While he’s certainly an old hand at this

solo lark, Braithwaite said that stepping out from the safety net of Sherbet in 1974 was a nerve-wracking experience.

“There was a bit of trepidation in the beginning because you never really know how it’s going to go,” he said.

“But ultimately it was a really reward-ing experience and one that continues to reward.”

Braithwaite said he was planning another release in the very near future.

“Hopefully, the plan is to start on some-thing new this year, but I don’t want to rush into anything, everything has to sit right with me before I commit.”

Catch Daryl Braithwaite at The Depot on Beaumont on Friday, March 6.

THE FREETONES

THE PRINCE OF WALES

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6

Two musicians who are respected throughout Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, Emily Young (vocals/keys), and Jason Bone (guitar/vocals), who play under the banner of the Freetones Duo, possess an immense repertoire that well and truly runs the gamut from the golden oldies of yesteryear to the crowd-pleasers of today.

If the likes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Amy Winehouse, AC/DC, Tom Petty, Al Green, Florence and the Machine and the Beatles float your boat then you’ll be in heaven when the Freetones rock up to your local.

This is a duo that prides itself on customis-ing their set-list to the mood of any room.

Be it a chilled-out Sunday session or a rocking Friday night barn-burner, the Freetones definitely have you covered. They’ve even been known to throw in some sax, trumpet and extra percussion to flesh out their already rich sound.

Catch the Freetones at the Prince of Wales on Friday, February 6.

Local outfit Loko certainly aren’t afraid of their audience filling the dance floor right from the get-go.

This three-piece takes pride in a set-list that is peppered with songs that elicit such responses as “I haven’t heard anyone play that,” managing into the bargain to avoid many of the stereotypes that plague the modern covers band.

With a generation of musical experience behind them, and with nods to massive acts like the Angels, Van Morrison, Bon Jovi and Van Halen, to the more left of centre, including the Script, Sniff and the Tears, the Clash and Chumbawumba, Loko truly have something for everyone.

These guys cut their teeth in the 80s and 90s Newcastle pub and club scene and have played in respected local bands such as Nite Shift, Radio GaGa, Street Legal, Chosen Few, First Degree, Idol Motion, Your Move, Incognito, Scarecrow, Roadhouse and Alcatraz, to name just a few.

H ot on the heels of her mammoth best female artist nod at the recent Golden Guitars in Tamworth,

Amber Lawrence is certainly wasting no time basking in the glory of her big win.

“It was such a big surprise and I am so utterly thrilled to win, but I couldn’t really do much partying last Sunday because, the next night, I had to open for Kenny Rogers in Tamworth. But the feet are well and truly back on the ground now, because you’ve got to keep working, you know?”

That tireless work ethic will bring Lawrence to Lizotte’s this weekend where she’ll be wowing punters with tracks from her latest goal kicking album Superheroes.

Featuring the two chart-topping singles Superhero and the Lifesaver, album number four represents a bit of a change of direction for Lawrence - from the more country pop sphere of her previous LPs the Mile, When It All Comes Down and 3 to a much earthier and rockier sound.

“I guess I really wanted to take a differ-

ent tact with this record,” she explained.“I wanted to write a really honest album

and there are a few songs on there, like Lifesaver that probably wouldn’t have made it on other records because it’s not really written in a traditional format.”

Lawrence recorded the album in the songwriting Mecca of Nashville with acclaimed Aussie producer Matt Fell (Tim Freedman, Ian Moss, Troy Cassar-Daley, Slim Dusty) and she said his input was invaluable in thinking a bit outside the box for Superheroes.

“As I said I wanted to make the most honest record I could and I feel that Matt brought a real honesty to the production as well,” she said.

“He has such a great ear and he was really interested in treating each song as a separate entity without worrying how things would sound on the radio.”

When the dust finally settles from the Tamworth win, Lawrence said the plan was to keep plugging away on the Aussie highways and byways, preaching the Superheroes gospel.

“You’ve just got to keep working.”Catch Amber Lawrence at Lizotte’s

After coming out with one of the most ambitious debut efforts in recent memory in the form of a four-album box-set (Plumb Duff, Positive Holding Pattern, Spirit of Boom and Photo Verse Memory), Maitland-via-Sydney-via-Alstonville outfit Forever Since Breakfast are back with a new long-player - Right Time Burning.

“I guess you could call it a cheat sheet for the box-set as the songs have been culled from there, it was all very zen,” axe slinger Matthew Walker told TE.

Featuring fellow sonic adventurists Scott Blackley (Muzzy Pep, Great Divid-ing Range), Steve Reynolds (the Stiffies), Leith Tisdell (Great Dividing Range) and Errol Moyle (Muzzy Pep, Australian Beefweek Show), the modus operandi

of FSB is living the mantra of long-time Neil Young producer David Briggs: “If you think, you stink”. To that end, each album in the box-set was written and recorded in only three days and Walker said this theme definitely continues with Right Time Burning.

“There was very little thought that went into this one and most of it came from someone outside the band, we’ve outsourced thinking.”

While comparisons to the likes of Teenage Fanclub, Wilco and REM may be warranted, pigeonholing these guys would be a fool’s errand.

“It’s pretty ADHD,” Walker laughed.“It’s a sonic smorgasbord that hops,

skips and jumps all over the place, but definitely in a good way.”

Global pop sensation on the rise, Zenya (or Cassandra Bashford to the taxman), certainly has come a long way since picking up a

hottest urban artist gong at Fannys night-club back in 2006.

Since her first attempt at writing a song on guitar at the tender age of nine, the Newcastle-born and bred singer has gone on to kick more than a few goals, performing as a backup singer for some of the hottest names on the planet.

Zenya has toured the globe with Justin Timberlake on his Legends of Summer and 20/20 Experience tours and has also worked with the likes of Boyz II Men, Shaggy, Mavis Staples, Demi Lovato, Jay Z, Cyndi Lauper and Booker T and the MGs. Oh and she’s also performed for Barack Obama - at the White House no less.

Now, Zenya has taken centre stage with the release of her debut single Freedom In A Kiss - a banging dance number that she describes as “the love song meeting the

rave.”“I’m so excited to have the song out,”

Zenya told TE down the line from her Miami base.

“It’s a really positive song that deals with the idea of falling in love, but falling in love with someone that you’ve gotten to know over a period of time. It’s really special to me.”

Zenya added that while the genesis of the track was quite organic, its execution proved to be a bit of a balancing act.

“I was on tour with Justin at the time, so there was quite a bit to juggle as you can imagine,” she laughed.

“But, in the end it was kind of a Godsend because I was able to learn so much about the whole process touring with Justin.

After cutting her teeth in pretty much any local venue that would have her, and after stints in Bali and India, Zenya decided to make the trip Stateside, settling in New York. But don’t go think-ing everything fell in her lap - quite a bit of hard graft was required.

“I was working four different jobs to scrape up enough money to move to the US,” she said.

“From there, it was a lot of work and a

hell of a lot of networking to just get in people’s faces. It wasn’t easy, but it was certainly worthwhile.”

With her debut EP Artuvnoize set to drop in May, Zenya added that she was eager to pay homage to her home country and, by extension, Newcastle.

“Of course, Novocastrians can expect a

show,” she said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“I want to show Australia that I appreci-ate where I grew up, so I really want to get the EP happening there first.

Freedom In A Kiss is available now at cdbaby.com/cd/Zenya. Her debut EP Artuvnoize will be released in May.

With Chinese New Year just around the corner (Thursday, February 19) there is certainly no shortage of options

in our region to celebrate the Year of the Sheep.

Peacock Palace at Warners Bay will defi-nitely be getting into the spirit of things with a Chinese Dragon dance at 7pm on Thursday, February 19, along with their sumptuous Chinese fare while over at Stockton RSL, the Doncaster Bistro will be offering a mouth-watering Chinese banquet as well as a lion dance and enter-tainment on Friday, March 6.

The popular Heng Loong restaurant in Wallsend, Swansea Workers Club and the Rickshaw Inn restaurant at the Newcastle United Sports Club with their vast range of Asian delicacies should also be high on your to-do list.

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calendar. The new year begins on the first day of the Chinese calendar, which usually falls in February, and the festivities continue for 15 days.

During Chinese New Year celebrations,

people wear red clothes, give children ‘lucky money’ in red envelopes and set off firecrackers. Red symbolises fire, which the Chinese believe drives away bad luck.

Chinese New Year ends with the lantern festival, where people hang decorated lanterns in temples and carry lanterns to an evening parade under the light of the full moon. The highlight of the lantern festival is often the dragon dance. The dragon can stretch to over 30 metres long and is typically made of silk, paper and bamboo.

2015 is the Year of the Sheep and accord-ing to Chinese legend, there was a boy called Lěi, who had a large flock of sheep. But one day, Lěi lost a sheep because he didn’t take care of his fence. Gradually more sheep escaped until, at last, there was only one left. Only then did Lěi real-ise the seriousness of his situation, and belatedly repaired the fence. From that moment, none of his sheep were ever lost. Some famous “sheep people” include Mark Twain, Muhammad Ali, Benicio Del Toro, Nicole Kidman, Claire Danes, Bruce Willis, Barbara Walters, Matt LeBlanc and Julia Roberts.

S o, all you moovers and groovers, it’s that time of year again. The bovine behemoth that is

Groovin’ the Moo has announced yet another brilliant line-up for the 2015 incarnation.

With the likes of rockers like Wolf-mother and the Delta Riggs, mosh-friendly metal-core heroes Northlane and UK hardcore kids You Me At Six on the bill, Maitland Hospital could well experience quite a rise in whiplash cases and other pit-related injuries.

If that wasn’t enough, you’ve got your choice of all manner of indie, hip-hop, EDM, electro-punk-funk and pretty much any genre worth mentioning.

North American acts A$AP Ferg, Peaches and RL Grime will be making the trek, as will UK superstars Charli XCX and Peace.

The home front is more than repre-sented with the likes of Ball Park Music, Hermitude, Hilltop Hoods, the Preatures, San Cisco, Saskwatch, Sticky Fingers, Tkay Maidza, Meg Mac, Flight Facilities, Hot Dub Time Machine and Carmada featured on the bill. Oh, and also New Zealand’s Broods.

Once again the folks at Moo HQ are putting the call out to artists, designers, students and hobbyists to enter the 2015 GTM competition where all you have to do is come up with a spiffy GTM souvenir that captures the idyllic retreat that is Australia’s only regional touring festival. Head over to the competition section at gtm.net.au

Groovin’ the Moo 2015 will be on at Maitland Showground on Saturday, May 9. Head over to gtm.net.au for more information and tickets.

If you’re on the hunt for a new go-to pub grub haunt, you’d do well to check out the newly opened bistro at the Mayfield Hotel.

We recently visited the Maitland Road venue to sample the bistro’s wares and were delighted to find a fresh take on everyone’s favourite pub picks. To kick off proceedings, my dining partner and I opted for a classic starter - bruschetta. This take saw fresh, finely diced tomato and Spanish onion piled high on perfectly

toasted sourdough bread, drizzled with a sweet, sticky balsamic reduction and topped with creamy, crumbled feta. A perfect way to whet out appetites for our mains. While the well-curated a la carte menu has plenty of pub classics from burgers, to steaks and schnitties - they’ve even got a “mega schnitzel” special on Tuesday nights, I chose the roast pump-kin and beetroot salad. Sweet, segments of caramelized roast pumpkin, beetroot chunks and salty feta tossed through salad greens combined beautifully, but it was the addition of candied walnuts that really lifted this dish to the next level. Sweet, savoury, crunchy, creamy - this

was a really well-balanced dish and defi-nitely pleased the taste buds.

After perusing the specials board, my dining partner chose to dine on barramundi. What arrived on our table was a perfectly cooked, flaking fillet of barramundi, sat atop a generous dollop of spiced kumara mash, tender aspara-gus spears and flavoursome cherry tomatoes. All of this was enveloped in a zesty, velvet-smooth lemon sauce. Fresh flavours, simple and delicious.

The Mayfield Hotel Bistro has also got a bumper line-up of midweek burger, steak and schnitzel specials as well as the tradi-tional roast dinner on Sunday nights.

While Cupid’s arrows will be flying this Valentine’s Day, Newcastle art lovers certainly won’t be left out with a special collaborative art exhibition that is set to open on the international day of amour.

Since last winter, the newly formed Newcastle Gallery Collective (NGC), consisting of Jo Chisholm-Ray, Vicki Gerritsen, Barbara Nanshe and Ahn Wells, has been preparing for this special, three-week exhibition that will run across four different gallery spaces, called Small Medium Large.

Small Medium Large will present 12 Newcastle-based artists including Ahn Wells, Barbara Nanshe, Paul Maher, Meredith Woolnough, Jill Orr, Malcolm Cannon, Frances Fussell, Jackie Gorring, Matthew Tome, Michelle Brodie, Joanna O’Toole and Kelly Barlin.

Ahn Wells said that the goal of the NGC was to promote the wide breadth of artis-tic talent in the region.

“We are a group that is trying to encour-age artistic growth within our local art community, while also allowing individual artists to experiment and diverge outside their recognisable aesthetic,” she said.

Barbara Nashe added that the group operated differently to a traditional commercial gallery.

“Our group is not like a commercial gallery,” she said.

“We are going to ask new artists each time we do a new show and that is the overall goal of the group - to do a yearly exhibition.”

Small Medium Large will be kicking off with a gallery-crawl exhibition on Satur-day, February 14 from 2pm to 7.30pm. The event is free and people can join in the entire crawl and the details are as follows:

2pm to 3pm - Nanshe Studio Gallery, 148 Beaumont Street Hamilton

3.30pm to 4.30pm - Newcastle Art Space, 246 Parry Street, Hamilton East

5pm to 6pm - four point gallery, 681 Hunter Street Newcastle West

6.30pm to 7.30pm cstudios Art Gallery, 738 Hunter Street, Newcastle West.

With holidays over, family films are out to pasture and it’s time for adults at the cinema. The culmination of awards sea-son is the announcement of Oscars.

Some nominees for best picture are still screening including American Sniper (Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper), Birdman (Michael Keaton), The Imitation Game (Benedict Cumberbatch) and The Theory of Everything (Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones). Already seen earlier in 2014 but included in this awards season are Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Whiplash.

Golden Globe winners anticipated for Oscars include Boyhood, Best Drama; The Grand Budapest Hotel, Best Comedy or Musical; Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Best Actress; and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything), Best Actor.

Foxcatcher (M)EVENT CINEMAS, NEWCASTLE STEPHEN BISSET [4/5]

A time for the allgrown-ups to enjoyBY GARTH WEILEY*

MOVIEREVIEWS If you go into Foxcatcher thinking it will be a run-of-

the-mill wrestling bio-pic, you’re in for a big surprise, as director Barrett Miller (Moneyball, Capote) has created a dark, slow-burning character study that focuses on themes of control and manipulation.

Foxcatcher tells the bizarre, real-life tale of Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) who is invited by millionaire philanthropist John du Pont to move onto his estate to train at his state-of-the-art facility for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Wanting to step out of the shadow of his revered brother Dave’s (Mark Ruffalo) shadow, Mark jumps at the chance.

Seeing Schultz as an opportunity to gain the elusive respect of his peers and overbearing mother (Vanessa Redgrave) du Pont’s obsessiveness soon comes to the fore with disastrous results.

While he has stepped outside of straight-up comedy in the past, this is the first time Steve Carrell has played it completely straight and the results are astounding.

The Theory of Everything (M)EVENT CINEMAS, GLENDALE AMELIA PARROTT [3/5]

You should go and see this movie, even if it’s just for Eddie Redmayne’s freakishly accurate portrayal of the revered Cambridge physicist.

If Redmayne doesn’t win Best Actor for this perfor-mance the outcry will be huge.

Felicity Jones is equally as impressive as Hawking’s stoic wife, Jane.

But behind this captivating veneer there’s a famil-iar story that, in my opinion, fails to come to life on screen.
