This year's Annual Banquet was one of the Chamber’s biggest and best. The sold out event recognized the outstanding contributions that business men and women have made to our community. Elaine Stucy, of Stucy Realty Company walked away with the top honor of the prestigious , Businessperson of the Year. Police Commander/Auctioneer; John Anderson, entertained and fired up the crowd as he rallied for the highest bidder for Live Auction items. The Sky Ridge Flight of a Lifetime helicopter experience was a hot item and thanks to Linda Watson, we were able to award our top three bidders with a once in a lifetime trip. The Avs Experience from Kroenke Sports was also a crowd pleaser, in which, Debi Medved held her ground and out bid them all for her chance to sit on the bench with the team next year while donning a Gabriel Landeskog Jersey. Dear Castle Rock Chamber Members,
Someone asked me at the Chamber banquet earlier this month how it felt to “turn over the keys” to a new chairper-son. Of course I responded that it has been an honor to serve and that Mike Tafoya will do an awesome job as the new chair. But I’d like to expand on that answer in this letter—not because it says so much about me, but about the Chamber—the staff and the members.
First, I’m proud of the progress we made on so many fronts in the past year across the three primary elements of our mission: support and promote member businesses, be a business voice in government settings, and foster a livable community with positive growth.
The support and training programs for our members have grown in scope and effectiveness, thanks in large part to the Castle Rock Economic Gardening Committee (CREG). The monthly train-ing programs, Third Tech Tuesdays ses-sions, and the SCORE Counseling pro-gram are making a big difference. New businesses are starting, small busi-nesses are getting bigger, and big busi-nesses have better-trained employees.
As the Town grows so does the Cham-ber’s political advocacy clout in the re-gion and in the state. This is all coordi-nated within our Government Issues Committee and Douglas County Business Alliance with Pam Ridler doing much of the heavy lifting throughout the year from the Town Council chambers to the State Capitol.
The Castle Rock Chamber also has taken on a larger role in marketing the Castle Rock community, in partnership with the EDC and other groups. A new tourism-focused website will be rolled out very soon, and will serve as a one-stop resource for activities, entertain-ment, and businesses in our Town.
I don’t take personal credit for any of this—Pam and the rest of the Chamber staff make it happen. And they couldn’t do it without the volunteers who step up time and time again. Not only does everything get done, which is amazing in and of itself, it all gets done very, very well.
Second, I feel grateful for the continued coordination of all the groups in Castle Rock that support the Town’s business community and promote business/economic growth in this area. Each has its area of expertise and focus but all are pulling in the same direction.
Last, the Chamber has already benefit-ted from Mike Tafoya’s leadership skills within the Board of Directors and Ex-ecutive Committee settings. I’ve never seen anyone with such organizational vision and the skills to lead an organiza-tion to realize those visions. So, not only do I feel confident in “turning over the keys” to Mike, but I’m excited to see where he takes us, and I’m ready to help him in any way I can.
Thank you for giving me the opportu-nity to chair the Castle Rock Chamber over the past year; it’s been a highlight in my career. I’m looking forward to continuing to support the Chamber and I thank all of you who are taking that same approach.
At your service,
Michael Likens, President

Elaine Stucy, Ernie Fazekas, Aaron Barrick, Mark Stevens, and Betty Graf, were awarded for their excep-tional community efforts April 25th at the Castle Rock Chamber of Com-merce annual banquet, held at the Marriott Denver South.
Elaine Stucy, Stucy Realty Company, was named business person of the year; citizen of the year Ernie Fazekas and volunteer of the year award win-ner, Aaron Barrick; both of Folkestad, Fazekas, Barrick & Patoile P.C. were also honored. New this year, the Chamber recognized a government employee or elected official and Mark Stevens, Town Manager; was the in-augural winner. Betty Graf was named the Chamber Ambassador of the Year.
At the banquet, Stucy reflected on the past 13 years of building her real estate business with her husband, Rick; which originally started out of their home after relocating from Kan-sas City in the late 1990's. With all the dreams of true entrepreneurship they were able to grow their business and eventually purchase their current location in 2007 which employees 25 people. Stucy considers her business, not a job; it's her vocation and her avocation.
Volunteer of the year Aaron Barrick accepted the Citizen of the year award on behalf of Ernie Fazekas who was unable to attend. Barrick spoke of the great example of leader-ship and civic duty that Fazekas em-powers his employees to achieve. And what a great honor it was to be recognized for his efforts which most recently include serving on the board
of the town's newest development, Philip S. Miller Park.
Betty Graf, Reliv International, am-bassador of the year, whom is well known throughout the community for her infectious smile and laughter; almost immediately joined the cham-ber after relocating to Colorado with her husband Harlan over six years ago. As ambassador of the year, Graf has served at chamber ceremonies, various business networking events, new member receptions, Chamber Leads Groups and numerous other committees.
The awards ceremony included the annual ‘passing of the gavel’ tradition in which Michael Likens, gopixel De-sign Studios turned over his leader-ship role to incoming Chair, Mike Ta-foya of Estrada Strategies, DTC. Other new officers included: Chair-Elect, Elyse McNulty of Kaiser Perma-nente; Treasure, John Cona of ACME Brick; and Treasurer-Elect, Aaron Fort of Eakins Fort Company P.C. New directors include: Robert Berry, Keystone Advisors; Heather Brown-ing, Colonial Benefit Group; Nino Di-Matteo, Firstbank of Douglas County; Brooke Fox, C.A.L.F.; Todd Folken-berg, Castle Rock Adventist Hospital; Jill Garber, Arapahoe Community
College; Golden Goodwin, gosocial Douglas County; Bernie Greenberg, Kokish & Goldmanis, P.C.; Nadine Kirk, RE/MAX Alliance; John Manka, 1 Stop Tire & Auto; Gina Masterson, Folkestad, Fazekas, Barrick, & Patoile P.C.; Linda Watson, Sky Ridge Medi-cal Center; and Tom Waymire, Castle Rock Bank. Brett Turner is a Colorado native, and has lived in Castle Rock for over 18 yrs with his wife and business partner Sue. They joined the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce in 2008 and are both active ambassadors.
The Turners have been in the brand-ing and marketing business for several years and they recently launched a new brand, “180° Branding,” to in-clude an eCommerce web site (www.180branding.com). This new venture adds eCommerce solutions for their clients as well.
As for the new 180° Branding website, visitors can now purchase products and merchandise online for just about anything under the sun (well that’s a bit of an exaggeration but if you pay a visit to their website and do a search, you’ll get the idea). To keep visitors coming back, they will be introducing product specials with savings that could save on your next trade show or marketing program. There will also be specials on single item offers like an awesome name brand jacket or maybe a cool new electronic gadget. The intention is NOT to compete with the local malls and shops, but bring a quality, unique surprise to the website at a price that is hard to pass up. The specials will change frequently and won’t last very long so be sure to visit often so you don’t miss out.
The new eCommerce solutions (Online Stores) are for businesses who want to benefit from the following:
• Manage costs within their organization for print and promo-tional items, office supplies, business cards and stationary, brochures, uniforms, etc.
• Brand recognition
• Advertising
• Online videos customized for their business to build identity, rapport
• Promote the company’s image and control how their clients recognize and come to know them.
• Promote a company’s own products with the ability to sell online
• Added stream of income
Some companies simply provide products, but 180° Branding provides integrated solutions that work.
With several years of hands on experi-ence in the print and promotional industry and helping large and small businesses build brand recognition, the Turners can effectively guide you to avoid costly mistakes and help turn your business around 180° towards profitability.
Visit www.180branding.com or call 303-688-4961 to set up a free consultation.
Thank you Brett, for all you do to support and promote the
Castle Rock Chamber.
We greatly appreciate and applaud your outstanding
efforts!

PITCHES PAY OFF AT YEA! INVESTOR PANEL EVENT - Local Young Entrepreneurs Obtain Funding to Launch Enterprises – Students from high schools in Douglas County pitched their business ideas, on April 1, before a panel of three real-life investors from several of the area’s largest companies. The students were competing for funding at the 2nd An-nual Castle Rock Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) Investor Panel Presentation and Pitch Event. Through hard work, and with great tenacity rarely seen at such a young age, these teens qualified for this opportunity to gain funding for their original ideas—that could just be the next big thing! The audience in the theatre at Castle View High School was attended by family, friends and members of the busi-ness community. This year’s YEA! class is comprised of high school students from both Highlands Ranch and Cas-tle Rock. The Investor Panel Event is one of the program’s three “big events” that take place over the duration of the nine-month program. The Investor Panel donated mone-tary contributions and in-kind donations, as well as their support and encouragement in their belief that everyone can make a job—not just take a job—at any age!
Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!)
About the Young Entrepreneurs Academy:
The direct mission of YEA! is to help students embrace their passion, energy, creativity and talents, launch a venture, and view entrepreneur-ship as synonymous with success and freedom. In 2008, YEA! “spun-off” from the University of Rochester, where it was formed in 2004 with support from the Kauffman Foundation, to create its own not-for-profit corporation, YEA! Inc., which is currently launching sites in colleges, universities and high schools across the country to provide comprehen-sive, exciting entrepreneurship education, leadership development and innovation training to youth, providing them with skills they need to
succeed in the 21st Century.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! The investor panel consisted of the following prominent business professionals: • Todd Folkenberg, CEO of Castle Rock Adventist
Health Campus • Woody Pastorius, Founder and CEO of mywed-
ding.com • Mike Tafoya, Chair-Elect of the Castle Rock Chamber
of Commerce and CEO of Estrada Strategies-DTC The funds were divided and allocated to the businesses that the investors felt had a well thought-out plan, and an idea that had a good chance at success. The investments were as follows: • The Manasi Project, a non-profit social enterprise to
provide educational materials to the village of Hop-kins, Belize, received $1650 and in-kind services from each of the three investors. Nic Brownrigg of Castle View High School is the CEO of this social movement.
• Marnick Enterprises, a patent-pending, product-based company that offers a personal hygiene device, re-ceived $1650. The owner is Marissa Gould, a freshman at Castle View High School. Marissa is also the overall winner of the event and will move on to the Saunders Semi-Finals in Frisco, Texas, at the beginning of May.
• N-Velocity, a digital video advertising agency received $600. The owner of this business is Paul McNamara, a freshman at Highlands High School.
• Ari’s Closet, an online apparel store/blog owner Ari Castro, a freshman at Castle View High School, re-ceived an internship at mywedding.com.
Students will now begin the launch phase of the program where they will be marketing and selling their products and services, and preparing for the YEA! Trade Show, to showcase their goods to the general public.
The Trade Show will be held on Saturday, May 17, from

Developing Leaders-Leadership Douglas County
April’s Class Topic: Law Enforcement On Wednesday, April 2, the Leadership Douglas County class met at the Douglas County Sheriff’s of-fice in Castle Rock to learn more about public safety. The day began with a panel and a discussion with Douglas County Sheriff David Weaver, Castle Rock Chief Jack Cauley, Parker Police Chief King and Lone Tree Police Chief Jeff Streeter. These leaders recog-nized the positive collaborations among law enforce-ment agencies and the efficiencies to their teams with shared manpower, equipment and cost benefits to all of the towns and cities involved during a time of in-creasing regional growth.
The morning segment included tours of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and jail, and a presentation by Coroner Lora Thomas with a tour of the morgue. The SORT Team demonstrated a well-executed cell ex-traction much to the awe of class members. Exciting demonstrations were given by the K-9 Team and a sniper/officer rescue by the SWAT Team. A hands-on simulation activity anticipating the actions of potential criminal behavior was experienced by each participant on a full-scale interactive video. The class also had the opportunity to receive firearms training at the shoot-ing range located at the Law Enforcement Training Facility Training Facility in Highlands Ranch.
“The law enforcement day exceeded my expecta-tions. During our time at the Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement, the Training Center was very interac-tive and hands-on. It opened my mind and thought process to what it would be like to service the public in that capacity. “ Nicole Sanders, LDC Participant
The next Leadership Class is “Fire and Emergency Ser-vices Day on Wednesday, May 7, with activities in Lone Tree and Castle Rock. If you would like to attend a class day, prior to applying to the program, please let us know!
