Modernisation of an Abattoir in the Pays de Soule, FranceSummaryIn a region where animal breeding is essential for the local economy, the modernisation of the slaughterhouse in Mauleon meant that new services could be provided to local breeders and new job opportunities were created in the region. BackgroundThe economy of Soule, the smallest province of the Pays Basque, which counts some 14,000 inhabitants distributed around 35 municipalities, is principally based on animal breeding. The modernisation of the abattoir in Mauleon represents an important boost for the local economy. The abattoir was first improved in 2003 with the construction of a new meat-cutting room. But by 2009 it was clear that the facility no longer met the users needs, both in terms of capacity and services offered. ObjectiveThe main objective of the project was to modernise the slaughterhouse and diversify the services offered in order to better meet its clients expectations, particularly with regards to their desire to move into the direct sales business. Other important objectives were to: i) save energy and water; ii) reduce waste and odour; and iii) create new jobs opportunities for locals. Main activitiesThe main modernisation activities involved: i) the enlargement of the meat-cutting room and the packaging room; ii) the refurbishment of the building and reorganisation of the production lines; iii) the installation of new equipment, such as a vacuum-wrap machine and an automatic labelling machine; and iv) the installation of new equipment to reduce the environmental impact, such as an oil-petrol separator to purify water and a lighting system using motion detectors. Results & BenefitsThe abattoir was enlarged, the cutting and packaging rooms were increased to 600 m2 which means that 2,600 tonnes of meat can be processes per year. The new cutting room also offers some new services to users. Meat is cut according the users requirements - whether for their consumption and/or for direct sale then vacuum-wrapped and stocked in a cold room ready for collection. The waiting time for slaughtering has been reduced from 6-to-3 months and 4 jobs have been created. Increasing competitiveness through Integrated Supply-Chain: the fig of CosenzaSummaryThe production of figs in Cosenza has been falling. The project contributed to reversing this through the creation of an organised -supply chain, by introducing new production methods, and strengthening cooperation between stakeholders. BackgroundLow profitability, small family holdings, and difficulties with generational renewal are all factors that have contributed to the falling production of figs, the typical product of Cosenza, since the 1990s. A range of public and private sector stakeholders (including producers groups, single farmers, food processors, the regional agency, and the LAG) took the decision to work together in order to reverse this tendency of abandoning the region and the cultivation of this traditional product. ObjectiveThe broader aims of this integrated project were to: i) promote production diversification and quality; ii) strengthen local entrepreneurship. With the specific objectives being to: set up an organised supply chain; create the Protected Denomination of Origin (PDO) label Fichi di Cosenza; introduce modern and innovative cultivation methods and increase the profitability of fig production; redistribute in a more balanced and equitable fashion the financial margins across the supply chain. Main activitiesThe main activities of this integrated project were: the defining and implementation of the PDO production regulations; the introduction of new production systems, sterilization techniques, and innovative packaging; the restructuring of the drying greenhouses; the creation of advisory services for the fig farmers; the dissemination of the new ideas developed in this project; participants in the project benefited from funding coming from several RDP measures, specifically 111, 114, 123, and 124 Results & BenefitsThe actions of this project resulted in several positives for the fig production sector. Firstly the creation of an organised supply chain and the recognition of the PDO fostered a newfound cooperation between the different parties involved in the sector. This led to a greater transfer of knowledge and experiences and also the creation of new market opportunities. The project also resulted in increasing fig production and consequently the improved economic viability of many farms. Lessons learntThis project provided numerous insights. Firstly cooperation between different partners assists the dispersal of new ideas across the supply chain. Also strong leadership maintains the overall vision of the supply-chain while advisory services can aid in the identification of necessities and ensure communication between researchers and entrepreneurs. Negatives were that the administrative procedures and lack of support from banks led to difficulties and so delayed the execution of the project. Processing Plant for Adding Value to Citrus by-productsSummaryThe installation of a processing plant for treating by products of the citrus agri-food industry has contributed to generate value added of such waste products and their alternative use as input for animal feed, essential oils and treated water. BackgroundCitrotecno is a company that was born as an initiative of a group of entrepreneurs from Valencia, traditionally engaged in the agriculture and livestock sectors. Their commitment to these sectors and constant search for innovative solutions has led to the identification and development of modern technologies and research processes that help address the specific needs and issues in a more efficient and effective manner. ObjectiveThe overall objective of this project was the integrated processing of residuals generated from the citrus processing in the agri-food industry. Through this investment citrus residuals are collected and processed such as pulp and peel. As a result by-products are extracted that are utilised as raw material for animal feed, second-generation bioethanol, D-limonene, essential oils and purified water that is suitable for drinking and irrigation. Main activitiesThe projects involves the construction, installation and running of a processing plant for the extraction of citrus by-products. Citrotecno will contact manufacturers of juices and horticulture producers who are interested in using this technology for obtaining high value citrus by-products. The processing plant was designed with a capacity of around 15 to 25 tons per hour, which is believed to be the most cost effective and able to have an adequate return on investment. Results & BenefitsThis new and modern technology processing plant was received with an encouraging response from operators in the sector. It helped companies obtain environmental certification for treating waste/by-products. As a result, there is a high demand to procure this equipment. It is estimated that the plant will reach a capacity of about 40 tons/hour with 6,800/7,500 hours of work every per year. Lessons learntDespite financial and technical difficulties, the creativity and commitment of the entrepreneurs has led to a successful project implementation. In addition, they have opened up new lines of research exploring the feasibility for processing residuals from other horticultural products (e.g. melon, pineapple) as well as other agricultural residuals (e.g. lettuce, rice straw) that constitute a serious environmental problem for the Valencian region. Increased Capacity and Efficiency of a Potato Production PlantSummaryThe project deals with restructuring the production facilities to improve accessibility, energy, water treatment, health & safety that will lead to enhance the efficiency and capacity of the company with an environmental conscience. BackgroundThe project is part of the Processing and Marketing Grant (PMG) scheme of the Welsh RDP which provides financial assistance for capital investments that add value to agricultural and forestry products. These investments enable primary producers in Wales to add value to their outputs. ObjectiveThe key objectives of this investment include the enhancement of the production factors resulting in improved performance and competitiveness of the business. Any investment is undertaken in respect of the environment. This type of support allows for a better targeted production in line with consumer demand as well as facilitates the possibility of exploiting other niche markets. Main activitiesThe main project activities included: (a) a new road improving vehicle access to the loading bays and allowing for a better road management system to operate around the site (b) an upgraded power supply to the existing potato packing line (c) the construction of a new water treatment facility (d) the relocation of a weighbridge to improve access and health & safety standards, and (e) the refurbishment of the packaging shed. Results & BenefitsThe award winning potato firm Puffin Produce is able to implement a number of key measures at its Haverfordwest base which will increase the firms capacity and efficiency thus sustaining the on-farm employment. There will also be environmental benefits through the water treatment plant as well as health & safety improvements from the investments implemented.
