ROUND SLINGSTO AS 4497

Nobles Nobl-O-tech Round Slings are produced by spinning astrong, high quality polyester filament into a continuous parallelloop that is encased in a heavy-duty cover of smoothly wovenpolyester fabric. The parallel layering of the load bearing fibrescombined with the carefully designed outer casing size and weavestructure ensures safer, more secure lifting by allowing the coreand casing to expand together. This helps to distribute the load

evenly over a larger, flatter contact area.

Every Nobl-O-tech Round Sling is fully proof loaded atmanufacture and comes with its own test certificate.

The Australian Standard AS 4497is divided into two parts.

AS 4497 Part 1. Product Specification: includes requirements formaterial, design, manufacture, and mechanical properties, testingand marking.

AS 4497 Part 2. Care & Use:Includes information on goodslinging practice such asprecautions for connectingonto a load, storage, inspectioninformation and discard criteria.

Both of these standards arerecognised in OccupationalHealth and Safety regulations.

‘Endless’ means even wear andno special fittings.

As Nobl-O-tech Round Slings are ‘endless’ loads can be lifted atany point along the sling surface. Wear can be distributed evenlyalong the entire length of the sling ensuring a longer useful life.If specified the heavy-duty woven polyester casing (impregnated

Inspection Before Use Care In Use

Product Guide

The following signs of damage should be looked for during

inspections of round slings.1. External wear on the cover – caused by dragging over

rough surfaces that will open out the cover fibres and enablecontaminants to penetrate inside the sling.

2. Holes in the cover – Indicate that the sling has come intocontact with a sharp edge or protrusion. Slings with a hole inthe cover should be discarded, as there is no way of knowingwhat damage has been done to the internal fibres.

3. Local abrasion – any substantial local abrasion must be

viewed critically. Local abrasion will be caused by movementover sharp edges while the sling is under tension, which willresult in a loss of strength.

4.  Internal wear – will be caused by repeated flexing, particularly when particles of grit or dirt have penetrated intothe cover or into the internal fibres.

5. Damage to protective coating or sleeve – Any damage toa protective coating or sleeve can allow abrasive grit aneasier access to the sling.

6. Damage from high temperatures – High temperaturescan result from a hot environment, radiation or friction.High enough temperatures will cause fusing or shrinkage of synthetic webbing. Fusion is able to occur at temperaturesapproximately equal to the melting point of the polymerfrom which the fibres have been made. The melting pointof polypropylene is 165ºC. The melting points of nylon orpolyester are in the range 260ºC to 265ºC. Aramidpolyamide does not melt.

7. Sunlight degradation – Prolonged exposure to ultravioletradiation (including sunlight) of any textile will weaken thefibres. Degradation may be indicated by a hairy appearanceof fibres.

8. Chemical attack – Chemical attack is usually indicatedby the local weakening or softening of the cover material, allowing the surface fibres to be plucked or rubbed off.In some cases it may cause some stiffening of the sling. In extreme cases surface fibres are reduced to powder.

Every time a sling is to be usedthe sling does not show any sigsafe use. Particular attention shlocations and atmospheres thatdamage.

Inspection Before Use

The following signs of damage should be looked for duringinspections of flat webbing slings.

1. External wear – caused by dragging over rough surfacesthat causes an opening out of surface fibres (with a furryappearance). This is the most noticeable cause of weakness, particularly when a sling is being compared with a new sling. The outer faces of the webbing may become so worn thatyarns in the weave are severed. The label may becomedamaged.

GRADE 70 TRANSPORT CHAIN & COMPONENTS

TO AS 4344

Nobles Grade 70 Transport Chain is gold passivated for corrosionprotection and cleanliness. Grade 70 transport chain andcomponents are covered by AS 4344, which specifies a lashingcapacity of minimum breaking force divided by 2. All chain isproof tested and subjected to batch testing to confirm compliancewith specification. Test certificates can be provided as evidence of compliance.

Lashing Capacity

The Lashing Capacity is a nominal capacity calculated toincorporate relevant loading, dynamic and other factors, whichallows transport operators to simply establish the number of loadchains required to restrain a load.

Inspection Before Use1. Transport lashing chain should be regularly inspected to

ensure the chain does not show any signs of deformation, elongation, nicks, cracks, gouges or excessive wear orcorrosion.

2. If necessary clean the lashing chain and components beforeinspection.

LOAD BINDERS cont.

Load binders are used as a means of tensioning Grade 70 lashingchains. Load binders are not covered by AS 4344 but Noblesrange of load binders are designed to be compatible with thestrength of Grade 70 lashing chain and components.

Nobles load binders have the lashing capacities forged into thehandle. The claw hook load binder has a higher lashing capacitythan the grab hook load binder as the claw hook better supportsthe lashing chain link and induces less bending forces than thegrab hook when under tension.

Inspection Before Use1. Clean load binders if necessary prior to inspection.

2. Routinely check load binders for deformation, bending, cracks, nicks or gouges and excessive wear or corrosion.

Care In Use

1. Do not use load binders that show any signs of deformation, bending, cracks, nicks or gouges and excessive wear orcorrosion.

2. Do not operate load binder while standing on the load.

3. When the load binder is under tension release the handlewith caution as there is a great deal of energy in thetensioned chain. The handle may whip so be sure to keepclear of the moving handle.

4. If you release the handle by hand, use an open hand underthe handle and push upward. Do not close your hand aroundthe handle.

5. While under tension the load binder must not bear againstany object, as this will cause side loading.

6. Nobles recommends against the use of a handle extender

WARNING

• Load Binders should always be used in line with good lashing andload binding practice.

• Failure to use Grade 70 chain, components and load binderscorrectly could result in property damage, serious injuryor death.

NOBLES RECOV ERY-MATE SNATCH STRAPS

Nobles Recovery-Mate Snatch Straps are manufactured inAustralia to the highest quality standards. A snatch strap is anessential accessory for any 4WD that ventures off road.

Snatch straps are manufactured from 100% Nylon webbing. Nylonhas very high stretch (up to 20% at breaking load) and as such isan excellent material for the snatching recovery of a vehicle.

Inspection Before Use

Snatch Straps should always be inspected before use.The following signs of damage should be looked for duringinspections.

1. External wear – caused by dragging over rough surfaces. This causes an opening out of surface fibres and is a causeof weakness. The outer faces of the webbing may becomeso worn that yarns in the weave are severed.

2. Local abrasion – any substantial local abrasion must beviewed critically. Local abrasion is caused by movement oversharp edges while the strap is under tension.

3. Cuts and contusions – may be indicated by local rupturing orloosening of the yarns.

4. Internal wear – particles of grit and dirt can penetrate thesnatch strap and cause internal wear with repeated flexingof the strap during use.

5. Sunlight degradation – Prolonged exposure to ultravioletradiation will weaken the fibres. Never leave your snatch strapexposed to sunlight for long periods of time. Sunlightdegradation can be indicated by the fibres having a furryappearance.

6. Label damage – The label should always be legible. Recovery-Mate snatch straps have an overload indicator built into thelabel. Do not use the strap if the indicator is exposed.

7. Deterioration of stitching – Popped or broken stitches shouldalso be viewed critically and the strap should be discarded if the damage is enough to compromise the integrity of the strap.

8. Damage to eyes – The eyes of a snatch strap are an areawhere damage can occur and they should be carefullyinspected before use. Recovery-Mate snatch straps havereinforced eyes to ensure as long a working life as possible.

NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (WIRE ROPE)

This method of inspection of wire ropes has become part of the mining industries standard requirements foelectromagnetic instrument is used to non-destructively examine the rope. It incorporates a sensor head tfield in a section of rope that is located within the instrument. Changes in the metallic field enable a chart in metallic cross-sectional area and any wire breaks or other anomalies. Life of costly wire ropes may be emethod.
