STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 14 / REFLEXIÓN DE LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD PARA LA SEMANA DEL 14 DE FEBREROLiterally speaking, “Deuteronomy,” as in the Book of Deuteronomy, means “Second Law.” This Old Testament Book from which our First Reading is drawn actually consists of three sermons delivered to the Is-raelites by Moses. Interestingly, in German, this book is called just Mose, drawing the name from the opening line of the Book which states, quite simply, “These are the words of Moses.”In today’s reading Moses speaks not just to the Israelites, but to us as well, as is always the case with Holy Scripture. Moses makes reference to giving of one’s first fruits. Specifically he says, “Therefore, I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given me, and having set them before the Lord, your God, you shall bow down in his presence.”Giving of first fruits is a way to acknowledge and honor God because it provides the Lord with His portion first, before any is used for one’s self. That, of course, is an important aspect of stewardship, as challenging as that may be. Moses points out that it is more than giving first fruits, how-ever. He recognizes that all comes from God, and we are called to return this first portion in thanksgiving for God’s grace and love and blessings.Moses would also remind us that giving must come from the heart, with a true attitude of gratitude. It is part of the way we worship the Lord by being stewards of His gifts. For a longer reflection, please visit http://www.thecatholicsteward.com.

THE 1ST SUNDAY OF LENT / 1º DOMINGO DE CUARESMA 3

In the first reading today from Deuteronomy, Moses is instructing the priests and people on how to be grateful and give thanks to God. He lists several amazing events in the life of the Israelite people and recognizes that their salvation has come from God. This is why they now bring their first fruits to the altar as a way to thank God for all He has done for them.I suggest that each one of us make a list of the great things God has done in our lives. I was born… and go from there. Narrow it down to three or four that most changed your life for the good and remember those when things get tough. Give thanks to God for working in your life and being there when you needed Him most. Thursday Night Confessions: February 25, March 3 & 10 (in the church)God bless you all!Fr. Padre Jim

Fr. Jim’s Lenten Book ClubFEBRUARY 17 & 24 AND MARCH 2, 9 & 16, 6:30PMFor Lent we will be using “The Selfless Way of Christ” by Fr. Henri Nouwen. The book explores the three temptations of Jesus and how we might relate to them. The meetings will last about one hour. You will need to purchase your own copy of the book. It’s available at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and other online retailers in paper-back, hardcover and e-book.

Join Fr. Jim on a Day of Mercy PilgrimageMARCH 4, 9;30AMOn March 4, Pope Francis has called us to a 24 Hour Day of Mercy. We are planning a pilgrimage in honor of this day. We will start at OLF at 9:30am and drive to Holy Family Cathedral in Orange. We will walk through the Holy Door of Mercy and spend some time in prayer. Then we will continue to Christ Cathedral and walk the Sta-tions of the Cross for Migrants in the Cultural Center. Priests will also be present all day to listen to our confessions, so we will complete the second part of the Holy Door of Mercy Plenary Indulgence. The third and final part is to receive the Eucharist within a few days, which will be available over the weekend at OLF. After our visit we will go to the food courts at the Block for lunch. Then return home. Carpooling is encouraged. The only cost is your lunch.

In today’s first reading as the Israelites are ending their wander-ing in the desert, Moses recalls for them their deliverance from slavery. “We cried to the LORD, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our cry and saw our affliction, our toil and our oppression.” (Dt 26:7) This foreshadows of course, Jesus’ own desert experience. Filled with spirit, Jesus entered the desert and it was the spirit that led him out. Luke’s gospel more than any of the others, shows us Jesus’ compassion for the vulner-able, marginalized, oppressed and afflicted. If God hears the cries of the afflicted and oppressed, how can we not?

THE 1ST SUNDAY OF LENT / 1º DOMINGO DE CUARESMA 5

Operation Rice Bowl / Operacion Plato de ArrozMARIA’S STORY / LA HISTORIA DE MARÍAFighting between armed forces made life in Cumbitara, Colombia, dangerous for Maria and her fami-

ly. So dangerous that eight years ago they were forced to relocate. They left their home one morning with nothing but a suitcase of clothes. It wasn’t easy making a new life in Nariño, a region of Colombia known for its coffee. People made fun of Maria and her family because they were outsiders. It was also hard to find work, and Maria’s father left home for months at a time to do dangerous work in a mine. All that changed when the family bought a little piece of land through the CRS Borderlands project. On it they grow gourmet coffee that is sold in the United States. And Maria, now 18 years old, is passionate about coffee too. She was chosen for a special program and is earning a degree in farming. The program, run by the local university and CRS’ Border-lands project staff, trains young people to become leaders in the coffee industry. During her first semester, she learned from staff as they traveled to farms, teaching growers new ways to plant and harvest. Coffee, which Maria knew nothing about before starting the program, is now her favorite subject. She’s even traveled to Seattle, Washington, to attend a conference on specialty coffee. “It is in my blood,” she says. “Coffee is so much a part of everyday life - not just for me and my family, but globally. It’s not just a plant or something you drink, it brings people together.” Now she has a new career goal: to help neigh-boring coffee farmers make a living growing the best coffee possible.
