INFANT BAPTISMS For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes. CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to make the proper ar rangements for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Back to work we go! Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It’s a venerable Catholic custom to as-sign patron saints to the trades and occupations of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devotion, and although from time to time the Vatican declares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is free-wheeling and just about uncontrollable. Still, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would often associate themselves with heav-enly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you’re stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cupertino is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you’re in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Vatican has from time to time assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Alo-ysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS patients, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow novices during a terrible plague. Any-thing that matters to us—nation, parish church, oc-cupation, illness—can have a patron, and it is an as-pect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the “communion of saints” is to know that the ties that bind us as a communion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life’s struggles, we do not stand alone. Who is your patron saint?

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

DEBES VER MÁS ALLÁ DE LAS APARIENCIAS La frase “vestido de domingo” ha perdido gran parte de su significado en la sociedad actual. Algunos se lamen-tan de que la gente ya no se ponga elegante para asistir a la iglesia los domingos; otros consideran que es un síntoma saludable que nos vistamos tan informalmente cuando nos reunimos ante el Señor como en los demás lugares. Sin importar cuál sea nuestra opinión sobre este tema, Santiago seguramente nos reprendería. En ambos casos, seguimos centrándonos en las apariencias, creyendo que suponen una especie de posición privilegiada ante Dios. Es cierto, Santi-ago critica a la comunidad que favorece a los ricos y bien vestidos mientras condena al ostracismo a los que están pobremente vestidos, pero critica aún más a quienes hacen distinciones y toman decisiones en base a criterios que na-da tienen que ver con el Reino de Dios. Puede que Santiago enfoque nuestra atención hacia el Reino de Dios que de-scribe Isaías, en el cual la gente es curada y la tierra se hace fértil para dar fruto. Jesús hoy se enfoca en este Reino de Dios cuando cura a un gentil en una región hostil a su fe judía, sin tener en cuenta el origen, la vestimenta ni la con-dición social de este hombre, ni siquiera su habilidad para retribuirle la atención. Isaías, Santiago y Jesús en el Evan-gelio según san Marcos nos llaman a ir más allá de las apariencias para averiguar dónde se debe hacer y se ha hecho la voluntad de Dios, así en la tierra como en el cielo.

PRO-LIFE CORNER ‐To cause another person to die intentionally is not an act of mercy as some insist, but an act of murder. God is the giver and taker of life, not man. We must stop abortion and euthanasia.

REFLECTION Mark chose to keep the word Ephphatha in its original Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke, rather than translate it into Greek.  “Be opened!” Jesus said to the deaf man regarding his ears. Perhaps Mark did so because he is also sugges ng that Jesus asks us to be open to those who are outside our own communi es, who speak a different language.  Perhaps Mark is also asking us to be open to listening for God’s word. A er all, the first words the formerly deaf man heard a er his ears were opened were the proclama ons of the crowd of the wonders that Jesus has done.
