What can mustard seeds and leaven teach us about the kingdom of God? The tiny mustard seed literally grew to be a tree which attracted numerous birds because they loved the little black mustard seed it produced. God's kingdom works in a similar fashion. It starts from the smallest beginnings in the hearts of men and women who are receptive to God's word. And it works unseen and causes a transformation from within.
The Holy Spirit transforms us The kingdom of God produces a transformation in those who receive the new life which Jesus Christ offers. When we yield to Jesus Christ, our lives are trans-formed by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Paul the Apostle says, "we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us" (2 Corinthians 4:7). Do you believe in the transforming power of the Holy Spirit? Good and evil are sown in our hearts like tiny seeds which germinate, and in due time yield a harvest of good or bad fruit. Charles Read said: "Sow an act and you reap a habit. Sow a habit and you reap a character. Sow a character and you reap a destiny." In the day of judgment each will reap what he or she has sown in this life. Those who sow good will shine in the kingdom of their Father. They will radiate with the beauty, joy, and fullness of God's love. Do you allow the love of Christ to rule in your heart and in your ac-tions?
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Mission Statement
To proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ: to educate, to evangelize,
To seek and reach out, and to provide charity and service to all.

Thought for Today
“‘But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moth and rustr do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.’”—Matthew 6:20
Dear Parishioners,
Summer is a time of "recreation" and refreshment! If you take that
word "recreation" and separate the "re" from the "creation" part, you
have the basic meaning of the word! To create or re-create! The re-
freshment of the soul and spirit, being recreated!
We all need to recreate! That recreation takes on a multitude of forms
for us. The blessing that follows is a summer blessing.
May you walk with God this summer
In whatever you do wherever you go.
Walking with God means...
Walking with honesty and with courage.
Walking with love and respect
And concern for the feelings of others.
May you talk to God this summer
On every day and in every situation.
Talking with God means...
praying words of praise for the beauty of creation.
Saying prayers of thanks for friends and good times.
Asking God's help in all your decisions.
Expressing sorrow when you have failed.
May you talk with God every day. Amen.
I wanted to let you know that I will be away beginning July 24 until
August 7. I will also be away from August 18 - 26. All our Masses are
covered and Father Jude will be covering for me I am away.
My first full weekend at Our Lady of Perpetual Help will be the first
weekend in September. Father Jude will be offering Mass at Our Lady
of Sorrows that weekend.
I look forward to meeting the community at Our Lady of Perpetual
Help and beginning our joint venture of being paired with Our Lady
of Sorrows.
God Bless us All,
Father Tim

What is happening on the parish leadership front?
The question I am asked most frequently these days is
“Will we have a priest for the Masses this week?” It makes me happy to
respond, “Of course, we will have a priest!” Throughout the summer our
schedule remains as it has been. You will find the schedule of Masses
and the name of the presider on page 2 of the bulletin. Beginning in
September you will find the schedule for OLPH and OLOS in both of our
bulletins!
Fr. Tim has met with each of the staff members to get to know us and to
understand our role in the parish. As you can imagine, every parish has
its own way of doing things and much of that depends on the gifts and
talents of the members of the staff, including the pastor. The involve-
ment of the parish community in the life of the parish also adds to its
flavor! Our small staff could NEVER accomplish what WE can accomplish
together.
If you haven’t met Fr. Jude you will have the opportunity to do so this
weekend. He has been serving the South County Catholic community for
many years, mostly at Our Lady of Sorrows, but also at Holy Family. Dur-
ing the summer he will be at OLPH for the weekday Masses and most of
the weekend Masses. Please introduce yourself to him and help him to
feel “at home”.
Everyone will have an opportunity to meet Fr. Tim when he celebrates
the weekend Masses on September 2/3.

Bring Home the Sunday Gospel—The parables today offer us a dimension of
God’s reign—his kingdom will exist in its fullness at the end of this world—
and He alone will bring it about. His reign also exists on earth, although not
yet completely fulfilled. We are God’s instruments on earth, with Jesus whose
Spirit enables us to do the work 0f God. Jesus taught us the Lord’s Prayer and
in it we pray…”your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven.” (Mt 6:10). As Jesus speaks to us in parables—mustard seed and
how that tiny seed grows into a huge shrub and the small amount of yeast
that makes much bread, we know the reign of God comes into being and
gains strength and prominence.
Jesus explains that the weeds grow with the harvest and, at harvest time,
are separated. The world is the field—the good seed are those who want to
be part of the kingdom—the weeds are those who follow evil ways. God’s
reign is at the end of the world when the people will enter into it OR through
sin, received just punishment. Have I/we taken opportunities to be yeast in a
mass of dough? How do you image the coming of the reign of God?
