The Baptism of the Lord

“Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his actions,

and his entire person reveals the mercy of

God.” (Misericordiae Vultus #1, Pope Francis)

The Year of Mercy calls us to embrace and embody God’s mercy, receiving and bestowing mercy. We are asked to make acts of mercy a priority in our lives, similar to how we determine our New Year’s resolutions. The “revolution of tenderness” demands our attention be placed on acts of forgiveness and reconciliation, kindness and compassion.

Annual Souper Bowl Sunday

We will pair our Annual Souper Bowl Sunday with

Rice Bowl this year. As we share our abundance

with others by donating cans of soup for the Ilse

Mark’s Food Pantry, we will complement our local

efforts with Catholic Relief Services’ global Rice

Bowl project. Throughout Lent, we will offer

prayers, alms and fasting for the poorest of the

poor.

“Mercy will always be greater that any sin, and no

one can place limits on the love of God who is ever

ready to forgive”

(Misericordiae Vultus, #3, Pope Francis)

Get to Know

Deacon Frank Trembley

Deacon Frank lives in Stoughton with his wife Ginni. They have 3 grown sons, 2 living in NY and in Singapore. He was ordained in 2002

and served for six years at St. Timothy's Parish in Norwood, while working as Administrator of the Sacred Hearts Retreat Center in Wareham. Cardinal O'Malley then "loaned" him to the Archdiocese of Nassau where Deacon Frank and Ginni served as missionaries as the only resident clergy on the remote Bahamian island of Andros serving four parishes. After seven years Deacon Frank and Ginni have returned and are looking forward to their new ministry at OLOS. A blog documenting their 7 years of service on Andros is located at www.deaconfrank.blogspot.com.

Make sure to greet and welcome Deacon Frank to Our Lady of Sorrows at the masses this week!!

Upcoming Special Collection

January 17th will be a Special Collection

for Catholic Elementary Schools This campaign is building the future of Catholic education with a new sustainable model for Catholic education in Greater Boston. Our schools provide children with rigorous academics, mission-driven teachers, modern classrooms, and most important– the opportunity to succeed. Providing families with real school choice, we are raising critical funding to rebuild effective Catholic schools in neighborhoods where need and demand is greatest.

Collection – January 3rd, 2016

The average cost to run the parish is $9,500 per week and our expectation is that 70% ($6,700 will come from the weekly offertory. On January 3rd, the parishioners contributed $7,652.

Annual Collection

The Annual Collection is under way. The Annual Collection is an important source of funding for the parish's many expenses, including salaries for our talented staff as well as property utilities and maintenance costs. We ask for your prayerful consideration to assist us in meeting our goal of raising $73,000.

To date, $46,705 has been contributed to the Annual Collection from 143 parishioners. Thank you for your generosity.

From Senior Deacon Mike:

On this celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, we conclude the Christmas season. And, on Monday, January 11th we begin the Ordinary time in the church calendar that precedes the Lenten season. Ash Wednesday is on February 10th this year

opening up the forty days of Lent. Thus, we have celebrated the Advent season, the birth of Christ, the Feast of the Holy Family, the Feast of the Epiphany, and the Baptism of Jesus at the Jordan. Now, our weekly celebrations recall the early ministry of Jesus as narrated by St. Luke.

Christmas Collection

$7,555 has been contributed to the Clergy Benefit Trust Christmas Collection for our retired priests. This figure does not include donations through ParishPay which will be added next week. If you did not give to this special collection, it is not too late. A check will be sent to the Archdiocese next week for the Christmas Collection. Youth Ministry Announcements:

Did you know that approximately 22,000 students attend 79 Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Boston?

The Archdiocese of Boston is holding a special second collection during the weekend of January 16-17. The purpose of this collection is to help Catholic elementary schools in our Archdiocese assist more families with demonstrated financial need and to help grow enrollment. If your parish is associated with a school, your school will receive 50% of the funds collected at your parish. The remaining funds will be distributed to other schools in the Archdiocese of Boston.

In our Archdiocese:

96% of Catholic school students matriculate to college

Catholic elementary school students score well above average on national assessments

Studies show that Catholic school students are:

Academically more confident with greater proficiency in writing and public speaking

Attending Mass more frequently

More tolerant of diverse views

More engaged in their communities and more likely to volunteer
