Curriculum mapping
Subject: Urdu
Intent of the curriculum – what are the aims of the curriculum and what is the curriculums overall goals?
The aim of the Urdu curriculum is to enable students of all abilities to develop their Urdu language skills to their full potential, equipping them with the knowledge to communicate in a variety of contexts with confidence. We are passionate about the benefits that learning a language can bring. We strongly believe in languages as a skill for life and something students should enjoy and find rewarding.
The overall goal is for the students to be able to:
Listen to standard speech, identify the key points of the speech and understand the spoken passages well.
Speak Urdu by participating in a conversation and responding to questions.
Read different types of written text.
Write an Urdu text and answering to questions bearing in mind vocabulary, grammar and tenses.
Curriculum maps are designed to ensure that all four skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening) are covered in every unit and opportunities to revisit key skills, in different ways, are built in to students’ learning journeys. Grammar is the foundation for building language skills. Learning grammar enables students to speak and write more accurately, confidently and fluently. Consequently, grammar skills are taught explicitly through every unit of work, and regularly revisited; emphasis is on equipping students with the linguistic skills to unpick and decode unfamiliar language.
How will the Implementation of the curriculum take place in the classroom?
For KS3 the curriculum will be implemented by following the schemes of work which has been made for KS3 in order for students to build upon the foundation of Urdu, developing gradually in the Urdu language, make progression for the future and finally make it easy for students to understand the Urdu curriculum in KS4.
For KS4 the curriculum is implemented by following the Urdu AQA 8648 specification and by focusing on a lot of past papers so that students are prepared for the exams and improve on the foundation of their Urdu skills.
Impact – what will the pupils learn by the end of the year and how does this link to future learning. How will pupils be assessed?
By the end of KS3, pupils will have learnt: the alphabet, Urdu words, numbers, personal identification, days & months, seasons, animals, parts of the body, hobbies, daily routine, grammar, occupations, media, nationality, citizenship, health, local area, and free time. The topics students will have studied will be beneficial and helpful for their preparations of Urdu GCSE exams as well as if they want to pursue further Urdu studies. Pupils will be assessed by term assessments, books being marked, completion of homework and providing extra support whether it maybe from the teacher, parents or other students.
Pupils in KS4 will be preparing for GCSE Urdu exam. The GCSE Urdu specification covers three distinct themes. These themes apply to all four question papers. Students are expected to understand and provide information and opinions about these themes relating to their own experiences and those of other people, including people in countries/ communities where Urdu is spoken.
The four exam papers are:
